For almost 2 weeks, I've been having a myriad of issues with my 2022 Interceptor 650. Is it time to call it a lemon?

Invaluable comments from the other chaps 👍. I’ve had no problem with mine & it’s a year old but will definitely order a Hitchcock relay now after the comments. I’ve just fitted the same bar end mirrors your going to do next. The bike looks superb with them ( annoying modification though but hey worth it ) Hope you get it sorted fella…

Gidday Ian, I’ve also fitted bar end mirrors to mine, sourced from Hitchcock’s, look the part, improved visibility AND they seem to have helped to eliminate the higher speed head shake, along with fitting Metzlers to replace the OEs. Kia Ora from EnZed. Bill

With all due respect to Royal Enfield but this issue has been know for a few years now and they are still putting the wrong type of grease on these inferior relays - why have they not addressed this issue ? This is 2022 and there is no excuse - Royal Enfield failure to respond.

Intermittent faults are the worst for fault finding and it usually ends up with a process of elimination ie. replacing parts which may be causing the problem.The relays in this case look the big favourites.

Yes buy bike & order Hitchcocks Relays or Bosch but proper Bosch straight away. With Hitchcocks you get good one's & twice the Amps.Alot of bike brands have cheap relays. Grip Puppies are also a good mod as R.E grips thin & also a cheap mod.If your hands are small you'll be alright.

I have a INT 650 I bought earlier this year. The first long ride I took, the bike stalled as you described, wouldn't start and finally started running again so I could get home. In the days and weeks following, off and on it would stall, but not as badly. I learned that other INT owners were having this problem so I cleaned ALL the white grease (lithium?) from every part of the relays and their sockets with a strong contact cleaner spray and that made a big difference. I experienced another episode of cutting out on a long ride, so I turned off then on again the emergency kill switch. doing it several times and that seemed to clear up the problem. With these electronic engine control units, it is really hard to tell what problem actually is, but my guess is the fuel pump was cutting out, probably due to its relay not making good internal contact. Right now my bike is working very well indeed, but a change of relays is a distinct possibility. I am eagerly awaiting the results of you putting in the improved relays and reporting the results.

@oldgeezerproductions
@oldgeezerproductions 2 года назад
@@ruahinesrider Yes, that is my plan if I encounter any more problems. I don't know if it is simply luck or if the original relays are "wearing in" but I haven't had any real issues for a long time now. I will certainly keep the idea of replacing the relays in mind, but there are so many things in these electronically controlled engines that can cause similar intermittent problems, I want to wait and see if I can get a "hard failure" before replacing anything. Right now I'm working on the hypothesis that it's the in-tank fuel pump and how to test it.
@ruahinesrider
@ruahinesrider 2 года назад
@@oldgeezerproductions The relays have R.E printed on them & R.E probably makes them.I cleaned grease off relays but when bike running for 20mins it happened again so I got Hitchcocks Relays which are have twice the Amps & hasn't happened again & have done a couple thousand km since.I also saw a video where guy cut one in half after 1300km & contacts had started to corrode.I would get Hitchcocks Relays & at £8 each is a cheap & necessary upgrade & start stronger & idle better & improves bike.
@oldgeezerproductions
@oldgeezerproductions 2 года назад
@@ruahinesrider Thanks for the update and suggestion. Right now, my INT has not missed a beat in weeks, so perhaps the electromechanical things are "loosening up and wearing in" or maybe I'm just lucky. If my luck changes, I will certainly take your advice. By the way, I was an aerospace engineer and all our parts had to be "mil-spec" which means that they had to be tested and retested before being certified. I have noticed that the Chinese (and I assume India is even worse) build parts to a good design with good materials and with decent workmanship and then expect everything to work while bypassing extensive inspection and testing of the individual components. You get parts very inexpensively, but you have to expect some failures too.

Have you tried substituting a set of ignition coils? If they don't remove the cut-outs, just put the old ones back in. Your mechanic should be able to find a couple good coils to try. Also check the ignition wires for loose connectors.

Gidday mate from Otago, NZ. Mine is a 2021, Euro 4, the OE relay for the fuel pump crapped out after 600 kays. My RE dealer replaced the lot with aftermarket ones, and replaced the electrical grease with their own having cleaned out all the factory grease. Sorted. Have added a fuel booster from Hitchcock’s. Noticed improved fuelling under acceleration. Carry spare relays. Cheers.

Test procedures for this is on youtube I had my first Interceptor for 3 years and now have a new Interceptor for only 1000 kilometres. I never have had issues but replaced relays on new bike anyway. The subject of the relays cropped up when my dealer delivered my bike. Their experience, as you reported from yours, was only a few bikes had been through them (and, against all the other Japanese bikes they sell, they are churning REs out!). He said they remain unconvinced it is the grease issue on relay as such, and although that may not be helping, more of an electrical one causing problems - perhaps through those relays. Their suspicion is that it is also tied to fuelling compounded by the relays. I've also read that the Hitchcock relays are current rated much higher - 50%-100% more and it seems highly possible that the oems are underrated for their use, spikes and surges, etc. Although I haven't explored why, perhaps experiencing external contact issues or too high a resistance (the grease), overheating coils as you suggest, or burning and pitting of internal contacts - or a combination of factors. Even within first few hundred miles of running in I have stalled the bike 'a few times' - or, in all fairness, I am not inexperienced and this does appear to be the bike (since I've never had this since a newbie years ago). It did occur to me that clutch and throttle collaboration was not helping, and shutting the throttle to early was stifling the fuelling. However, that doesn't really explain your experience with the overtake at 60ish, which is a rather concerning situation. It DOEs however, suggest fuelling may be at the root of all. Keep up the Vlogging. Very professional.

@@moto_cal Do you have any further information on what the reflash did? I'm looking for another bike at the moment. The interceptor/continental are on the radar. But ironically I'm more likely to buy a Guzzi, based on reliability and build quality, particularly the electrics. Never thought I'd say that about an Italian bike 🤣 Having said that my Himalayan has been completely reliable.

wow thats interesting. I was all about Guzzi, the V7 specifically and after so many articles and videos I feared too many potential issues with my limited skills to fix stuff myself. I think Im okay with basic maintenance but dont want to worry about too much being a weekend rider. I saw so many comparisons with the interceptor and so many great reviews Ive now switched to wanting that bike. Seems like a solid build and great for the price bike. My first love was the CB500x as I want an adv bike for minimal dirt and Honda is just rock solid in reliability factor. Good luck and and man, the Guzzis are just gorgeous and unique. Im still undecided, may actually ride a few of these first before deciding. In this age, I tend to review for so long I get my mind set before even trying something out.

Had same issues as you in regards to complete cut out. Replaced relays with upgraded ones along with cleaning the grease off. Kept stalling. Noticed it kept happening after gasing up. I've been filling just over half way and have not had an issue since. Frustrating

@BobfmBali
@BobfmBali Год назад
I think you have hit the nail on the head. If you have read the owners book before collection you see how critical not over filling the bike is. The bike has an EVAP collection in place, there to collect vapours from the fuel in the fuel tank, if you over fill neat fuel runs down to the charcoal canister designed to collect fumes and now swimming in fuel.There is an EM system that normally sucks this vapour out and dumps it back to the intake manifold to be burnt off.Either stop over filling or isolate the EVAP process.Hope this helps.

Also Hitchcocks Relays have twice the amps as others & you only use 3 relays as 4th is auxiliary relay.Also Check the battery cable connectors & clean grease also this is above the relays & hangs above air filter. I live a hour away & had my bike delivered 80km so I didn't have to stop every 15km on way home during run in for first 150km.R.E should be using a lithium spray on relays not grease they probably make too & use better relays.Not many people actually have a faulty relay but grease issues but after seeing one cut in half R.E should just use better one's.Don't get disheartened over relays bro it is a great bike.

G'day mate from Australia, l have a 2021 Interceptor and had a similar situation and went through my local dealer and it ran for them but not for me, so l went over the bike and checked everywhere under the seat, tank and any connection l could find, also changed the sparkplugs to Iridium ones and use Dielectric grease on all connectors, problem solved for my bike, have 8000 KMs up and 7000 without a problem, hope this helps, cheers, Neil 🤠.

I've Done the same back when I removed the grease from the relays at about 500 ish miles. This time round, changing the relays has solved the problem entirely. Check out Vlog 4 on my channel! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment too. Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing from here, but so valuable to have input from around the globe!

I had my INT 650 just a couple of hours when it cut out several times on my first ride out. As I pulled away from a 'T' junction I leant the bike over to make the turn and the engine cut out, dropping me to the floor (the bike was in gear and stopped instantly). The dealer who sold it to me said 'don't blip the throttle' (thanks!). I took it to another dealer who gave it a test run, booked it in where they checked the valves, downloaded the latest software and re-mapped the ECU. It took three days (?) but seems ok for now

That sucks dude. I've heard this story before from someone else who watched another of my videos and commented about his buddy. I wonder if you could be that buddy?? Sucks that you dropped the bike man. That's my fear of riding it at the moment. Couple of scary moments when that power cuts and you're leaned in!

I've only just found you on RU-vid but I have posted in a couple of Forums. It appears to be a common problem and the relays don't get good reviews either. This put to one side, my only criticism of the INT 650 is the position of the footpegs. I am only 5'6" tall and the pegs get in the way whenever I put my feet on the floor - comfortable position for riding, though

Interesting, my bike is a 21 model, date of manufacture Feb. I've had no issues as yet and have done over 7,000 km here in N Queensland, where it gets very hot and sometimes very humid as well. Does R E make their bikes tuned differently for other countries or are they all the same? I think I read that in march the 21 models had some further tuning to meet the EU standard on emissions.
@moto_cal
@moto_cal 2 года назад
To the best of my knowledge they are the same globally! Yes we are now on Euro 5 restrictions. I shouldn't think that the ambient temp would affect electrical too badly, perhaps more of an issue riding in traffic and start stop conditions with it being air cooled, but they get hot humid summers in India and it copes just fine!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Here in Germany, my dealer told me that he redoes a lot of work before handing the machine over to a customer. Where did you buy your machine from? Who did the PDI? When did these issues begin? Given the number RE have sold, you seem to have a lemon. But the incident rate of failure seems very low.
@moto_cal
@moto_cal 2 года назад
I bought it from a very reputable RE dealer who I'm confident does a thorough PDI and knows his stuff. He has been great, but he's too far away to get the bike back to him easily. The local dealer are too busy to help in a reasonable time frame. If the relays don't fix it, it will go back to my dealer somehow and I trust he will take care of it.

And outside of these issues, I absolutely love the bike. The title of the video is deliberately a little misleading and provocative. They are brilliant bikes, no bike can be guaranteed 'trouble free'. Very frustrating though! Thank you for watching and commenting my friend! Safe travels

As others have mentioned there is a lot of misinformation about relays and dielectric grease. Dielectric grease doesn’t conduct electricity so can’t short out other relays. The grease can’t be too thick to break an electrical connection. If it really was the cause of a problem then all bikes would be afflicted. Sometimes the relays aren’t seated properly so probably changing them just means they get seated properly. Euro5 bikes have a Continental ECU which seems to be tuned to be too lean at idle which explains why the dealer ECU flash solves so many problems. Euro4 bikes have a Bosch ECU and doesn’t have this issue.
@moto_cal
@moto_cal Год назад
I hear what you're saying mate, but a few points: cleaning them solved my problems early on, replacing them solved them this time, and from what I understand, (apparently) the dealers are trained by RE to clean them out during PDI because they are aware of the grease causing issues. 🤷

Your motorcycle needs a new ecu and a new updated map from RE. New relays is just to take the relay issues off the table. Fully synthetic oil, which is expensive so doubt the dealers do them at pos. I have a euro 5 interceptor cuts out at blips 1200 rpm to 1300 rpm. This always happens after 15 min into the ride(engine hot at normal operating conditions(lean)). First 15 min AFR mixture, air is choked, so a rich fuel supply and no issue when you blip at 1200 to 1300 rpm. Mine is well and truely fixed and am enjoying the ride. If the dealer really updated/remapped/new map your ecu you shouldn't have these problems.

@moto_cal
@moto_cal 2 года назад
Glad it hasn't put you off. For everyone who has troubles, there are dozens who have none!! A 'reflash' is in essence, a software update for the ECU. You can reflash an ECU to resolve any number of issues that the manufacturer has linked back to the ECU (i.e. Gremlins!) My understanding is that the primary reason RE released this update is pretty much a remap and changes the fuelling a little to stop the bike stalling when the throttle is blipped. I'm assuming that all new bikes rolling off the line already have this version from new, so it's only required for Euro 5 bikes up to whenever they started using this version.

I have to disagree. A lot of owners on the Facebook groups complaining of very similar issues to the ones I'm having. Not a day goes by that somebody doesn't ask about the stalling/cutting out issue... Especially within 200 miles of purchase. That being said, the engine seems to be bulletproof, just electrical issues that continue to let it down. Not enough for me to consider it 'unreliable'... And there are plenty of bikes twice the price that have similar issues.

This has actually put me off buying an interceptor 😀 My Triumph was a pos electrics wise. I wanted to buy a brand new bike and enjoy trouble free biking. When you break down on the bike you are screwed. Breakdown took 4 to 5 hours every time I called them. Can't go through that again. This or the scram looked ideal. But seems many are having this issue and I'm thinking a 3 or 4 year old Japanese bike like a Honda 500 or Suzuki Sv650 might be the way to go for me. Shame because I love the look and price of the interceptor.

I think RE's are fine as long as you buy with your eyes open , accepting they are a budget bike built to a price and NOT the bargain of the century as some owners have you believe . To me a true bargain is a low miles 2nd hand Guzzi V7 , a comparable price to the Interceptor for a quality Italian made classic with shaft drive and Brembo brakes etc . Lets be honest Its on a completely different level to the Interceptor and frankly I cannot understand why anyone would not choose it in preference, .... To be honest the same can be said for a used Bonny .
@moto_cal

I like how you positioned that. I think if it has exactly what you are looking for, it does present as the bargain of the century, but there is a slight trade off for sure. I think the ability and peace of mind owning a brand new bike means a lot for many owners. In the new market, its a bargain. In the overall market, sure, you'll get better bikes for the money, no question.

I disagree that spending more money guarantees reliability. I have a friend who had to hand back an Africa Twin after a year due to ongoing issues with the ECU and various other electrical gremlins. What I tried to convey in this video is that I've had some minor, but frustrating issues, which with the support of dealers and a little patience, have been resolved so far without much time off the road. The warranty and roadside assistance have both held up toox I even had a free hire car to keep me on the road while the bike was away getting a puncture repaired. All in all, I'm still happy, but it's important to be honest about my experience and perhaps help others.
