I lived in London for three years. One evening while walking to the store, talking with a friend, a drunk Frenchmen overhead me and asked, "Are you American?" I said yes and he replied, "Fuck you, I'm French!" we both laughed, he seemed nice.

Why hipsters bother me: they use false nostalgia for things they never experienced to lecture me about their true meaning and how I should feel about them.

Otis van Kemenade The video is defensive about horrible behaviors and lashes out at those who point it out. The video itself missed the point about why people hate hipsters, and instead decided to deflect to tangential topics. My comment is to redirect again to the topic at hand: why hipsters are horrible human beings and a plague on our culture.
@rolandvankemenade5051
@rolandvankemenade5051 8 лет назад
+meatrace the point of the video is that people aren't stereotypes, every human is their own unique being, some people you'd call hipsters are often horrible, and yet some are really nice people. Some have nostalgia for decades they weren't born in, and some don't. It doesn't help anybody to judge so many individuals on your perception of a stereotype of a group. because people aren't stereotypes.

It seems to me that many hipsters do "different" things just for the sake of being "different," and not because there is something meaningful they are trying to say. They are superficially "unique." Maybe my definition of "hipster" is wrong?

I must confess I, not being American, have no idea what a "hipster" is. As in, I've *really* tried to figure it out. But it just seems to be (from my extensive research via Google and RU-vid of course) a person other people hate for some unspecified reason. I find it weird. The Stephen Fry quote comes to mind, "There is nothing so pretentious as seeing pretension in others".
@grass5810

+Danielle Thomas You see, there is a group of people who enjoy a lifestyle for what is it, they wear a piece of clothing because they like the look of it on them, they buy a piece of old furniture becasue they like it's artistic expression and the fact it wont break in a year. This group of people get called hipsters, some of them are rude becasue they believe their more leftist way of life is superior, there are the others too... such as myself, who are more modest, and stick to themselves and don't label themselves as "hipster" because that in itself is un-hipster, NOW if there is somebody who "wants to be a hipster" and decides to do so they aren't "hipster" they don't wholesomly enjoy the lifestyle, fasion, music, furniture, whatever... These people who identify themselves as hipster do so because they want to feel better than everybody else. This gives anybody who ACTUALLY likes the stuff a hard time. People such as myself are now embaressed to like and collect these sorts of things and live a that sort of rustic lifestyle, this is a good thing though because, this will thin out the fakes, or the self described "hipster" the ones who ARE rude and aren't WHOLSOME Does that enlighten you? I admit to an almost instinctual dislike of people who view themselves as better than others purely for embracing difference. But I have to admit, the current generation of hipsters (yes all generations had hipsters of some sort), at least enjoys or (pretends to enjoy) things with a positive attitude. In the 90s there tended to be a lot of anger, rejection and negativity. It feels good to rage against the society for a while, but I'd rather embrace things like delicious beer, local foods and celebrating 8-bit video games as a method of rebellion, in a way that's more a statement about the relative luxury of life for a certain class of people around the world.

All art is about showing off one's tastes. Only rarely does a consumer of anything silence his posturing enough to see the moment... This is usually a surreal experience with a "holy shit why is there something rather than nothing." Such gazing into the real strangeness of reality is dangerous. It breaks the weak. Judging that it's wrong to look down on another person is itself looking down on someone. "I judge that it's wrong to judge." How Christian of you. Anyway... This guy lacks testosterone.

Those angry folk you are talking about weren't hipsters. You wouldn't label members of the BLM movement hipsters, would you? In the 90s, hipsters were slackers. Hipsters are hobbits. They focus on the luxuries of comfort. When they become (or are made aware) of the world outside the shire and DO something they're no longer a hipster.

Thank you. In the 90's I was considered a "hipster" because I hung out with others who celebrated diversity & refused conformity. We were not part of the Wealthy Elite Capitalists who gentrified our homes. Many of us (myself included) had to move away from our home cities. We are some of the victims of that gentrification, not the Right-wing oppressors who destroyed our lives for a little profit. We were the group where you could find most Socialists.

I usually like your videos, but this one I just don't understand; what does your anecdote about France have to do with hipsters? Did I miss what your counter-argument is? Hipster irony is huge self-defence mechanism to protect oneself from criticism; if everything I say and wear and like is under the guise of sarcasm and done ironically, then I've preemptively joined you in the mocking of it. Being sincere is risky because you open yourself up to being criticised. People lose the confidence to express genuine feelings, and love things un-ironically.

@starry_lis

We, as humans, need to categorise, because not one of us is capable to have throughoutly thought-out opinion on everything and everyone. This is why we divide knowledge and skills into disciplines and deal with people via stereotypes. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as one remembers that individual experience based opinions are to override stereotypes and not be defined by them.
@forformgamer
@forformgamer 7 лет назад
Well some stereotypes I've found are at least quite often statistically correct. Poor people, more often than rich people, score lower on IQ tests and can be called less intelligent. That does not mean that poor equals stupid. It's just that a poor person is less likely to be able to pay for education or has to work to stay alive instead of spending his time on studying. This way a stereotype is born without a meant negative implication. It helps to create a baseline on which you can base your experiences with the person. I've found it usually makes me feel like someone exceeds my expectations :) So please know that there is a non-lazy way to look at things you might not personally agree on :)

I think the problem with critiquing hipsters is that there's no concrete definition of a hipster. although there definitely is a common look (the ones that look very ridiculous), where do you draw the line with smaller degrees (having a flannel shirt, mustache, odd haircut, etc)? Furthermore, hipsters are defined by pretentiousness and disdain for mainstream culture; you can't really derive a person's ideologies JUST based on their look.
@BrickfallOfficial

I don't know if it's because i'm English, but optimism really grates on me. It's like nails down a chalk board. Anyways back to hipsters, most of them used to be emo's/scene kids back in the 90's/early 00's and the paradox of uniform individuality seems to be common thread through most social fads. They're just a manifestation of postmodernism (more a surrealist fan myself) really, which isn't in and of itself a bad thing-but what is-is following trends out of fear of social rejection or ridicule even if that trend is ridiculed by others outside of it, older or who don't understand it. A lot of people spend an awful lot of time and energy pretending to be someone else and hipsters are no different, it's a silent tragedy.

+coconut7joemanji I'm sorry but you're basing your claims that "Most of them used to be emo's/scene kids back in the early 90's/early 00's" from what? Your own prejudice? You can't just claim things like that and I seriously doubt there is any form of credible research to back up your claim.
@BrickfallOfficial

From my personal experience most of them were. And being an Emo/Scene kid isn't a bad thing you know? I think someone might be projecting. (I used to be one) Try not to assume the worst in people it'll make you a happier person. Here's a great tip, when someone talks about something in an informal way this usually implies they're expressing an opinion based often on personal experience. Therefore asking said person to back that up with research and then saying that the research wouldn't be credible even if it did exist, Is the intellectual equivalent of going to a comedy show and thinking the comedian personally believes everything they are saying and then accusing them of lying. P.S. "You can't just claim" that someone is prejudiced whenever it suites you. Why not try doing some research but "I seriously doubt there is any form of credible research to back up your claim."

To me, being a hipster has an air of pretentious sentimentality. The idea that somehow your worth increases by embracing a kind of post modern ideology/fashion. That somehow your self-awareness makes you the more intelligent, the more sophisticated, and the wiser than any others who disagree. And this is coming from someone who once identified as hipster. Hipster-ism, to me, is the trajectory towards deeper philosophy but is still sophomoric in presentation. Like a teenager who has just started asking the deeper questions of life sooner than their peers, incorporated larger words into their vocabulary, and then declared they're at the same level as wise-men many years their superior. Many people get annoyed with this because it is all conceptual in expression (they like the idea of something), rather than grounded in experience (they've actually been through something). To me, true wisdom cannot be forged entirely in your mind. It has to be lived through.

you don't have to fall off a bridge to know your your legs will get shattered; yes having experience may likely lead to wisdom, but intellectual stimulation can lead very often to the same place IMO

Self-awareness does make a person more intelligent than they would be if they lack self-awareness. I understand that most people are afraid to admit to their own imperfection, but that is clearly a massive weakness of character, not something to aspire to. No one is perfect, not even you. Introspection is only second to compassion as the greatest quality a human can have.

I don't get how your comments about Charlie McDonnell's channel are relevant to the Hipster article. Is Charlie a self professed hipster? Is hipsterdom equivalent to the RU-vid community? If the criticism of HIPSTERS is that they are using irony to mask their vulnerability and excusing anything that might be in bad taste by saying "that's supposed to be bad," then how is that in any way related to French stereotypes or a popular guy on RU-vid? If your friends actually like fixed gear bicycles then the article isn't even talking about them, is it? The article isn't about YOU and your friends.

1. the article makes the assumption that anyone who engages in what is decreed "hipster culture" is doing it ironically, which is obviously not the case, and is what he is arguing against. 2. the article acts as if "hipsterism" is the dominant force in our culture, and is the reason why our generation's legacy will be "stupid videos". he is simply pointing out one example of a recent video that has been incredibly popular, that has nothing to do with either of those observations

+Sailor Barsoom Read what this guy wrote: Hipsters are not about irony. They are about hypocrisy. Brag about vinyl record collection... doesn't own a vinyl record player, keeps all music on MacBook. Yammer about how antique stuff is superior to modern contrivances... have nervous breakdown if the keep the same iPhone for three months straight. Eat kale, ride bikes, talk non-stop about how gluten is bad for you... spend the weekend snorting cocaine in bathrooms. Blog about WalMart is driving away all the local, hard-working business owners... while slurping on coffee from Starbucks. Buy antique, retro-looking t-shirts with pre-faded logos from a bygone, pre-internet era... from an online catalog. Hipsters are the distilled essence of all the phoniness of every counter-culture that has preceded them. The have inverted emptiness and made it into their homes. They are offensive to the degree in which one values honesty.

+Ebah I've always had the impression 'hipsters' are for the greater part the adult forms of the late 90's and early 00's punks and emo's. They maintain a taste for underground/non-mainstream culture (especially music), prefer work in cultural or creative fields (including culinary arts) and base their fashion on various bygone decades. They ascribe to some values of the political side of the 80's DIY/Punk movement (environmentalism, vegetarianism/veganism, DIY ethics and aesthetics) but are at the same time, oddly materialistic in their pursuit of analog technology, second hand clothing, antique furniture AND the newest digital gadgets. Nevertheless, I feel that at the base of the elder Hipster (late twenties, early thirties) is not a desire to belong, nor be distinguished, but to have a compound lifestyle that combines their hobbies, tastes, vocations and morals/ethics and reflects their personality. The "hipster uniform", or any sub-culture fashion for that matter, is just a simple visual signal to identify like-minded individuals.

Always knew I didn't like hipsters, but didn't realize why until someone pointed it out: it's that "Don't care about anyone, too cool for everything" most all of them intentionally give off. Yeah, I know everyone thinks not giving a fuck is cool, but to me, but as the video says, it's just a transparent defense mechanism people use because the internet's made everyone too scared to handle normal social interaction. Plus, I don't see why you'd want to advertise apathy and selfishness, anyway. I like people who are genuinely passionate about things and care about people, not "ironically" bored and detached all the time.
@danielb7204
@danielb7204 8 лет назад
+C.S. Jones The apathetic and "bored" behavior is not an exclusively hipster thing. You see it in many of the more mainstream and self-accepting crowd, in efforts to be cool; rock stars and rappers are known for their nonchalant way of acting. It's generally just a way for people who feel trodden down to find control and acceptance, because it seems to them that the ones who are accepted and in control "don't care". In our minds we can always tell ourselves, "yeah, I don't like apathetic or selfish people, I'd much rather be with those who are passionate and care about me." But in the words of Thom Yorke, "No one likes a smart-ass, but we all like Stars." And frankly, the celebrities or "Stars" don't seem to give a damn.

I don't mind it, but it is definitely a bandwagoned movement; it looks cool, defying, and appeals to everyone in their late teens- 20 somethings. Hipsters (where I live) adorn the following ten stereotypes: - A nice Macbook... w/ f'n stickers and decals slapped on the side of it (strong sign) - Fixed Gear Bicycles ( definitely a strong sign) - Big ass glasses - A hat, any hat, doesn't matter, grab a beanie and join the club. Fedoras are more of a mascot. - SKINNY TAPERED JEANS...worn by guys. Just...how can you breathe down there? (Instant hipster) - Smokes cigarettes and drinks Starbucks coffee (bad combination, strong sign) - Politically correct for the most part, will associate themselves as libertarians or anarchists - Have student loan debt & majored in something they didn't even work hard in - Has a strong reference to everything 90s, nostalgia gaggers for the most part - Strong sense of narcissism I associate myself with the big ass glasses and a beanie, not even gonna lie lol

The problem with hipsters is not so much what they listen to, or what they wear... It's more about how they act about it. Hipsters are people who show off about what band they listen to, because they think it makes them seem cultured. Same goes with clothes, movies, etc. It's basically snobbery- they're just trying to seem cool, to seem clever.

The problem I have with SOME hipsters is that they appropriate different elements of cultures and then become cultural critics of the culture they have appropriated. Because this hypothetical hipster "found' some esoteric style before you, or he has more knowledge about it than you, he suddenly has the right to 1) say you're not cool (whatever that means) or 2) you shouldn't appropriate that because you don't really know about it, 'understand it' or adopted it to late. Ultimately, they are social engineers who inflate their own status, in our informal social hierarchy, through cultural elitism. It's annoying as fuck and pretty much a more nuanced form of "High School'. Final words, iconoclasm is not authentic when the goal is to be iconoclastic.
@CrashRHCP
@CrashRHCP 6 лет назад
I think the problem is that now "hipster" basically means someone who wants to be different for the sake of being different. I can't count how many times I've been called a "hipster" whenever I'm passionate about something that is lesser known. May it be an artist that I feel like deserves more attention, or a work of art which I feel is doing something new or interesting. There's something that attracts me about things that don't aim to be famous, that are there just trying to do their own thing, they're honest. Noise music, for example, is something that could never work in the mainstream, and I admire people who set out to do that, and while not every noise artist is good, there's always Pharmakon, Purient, Ramleh, Yellow Swans... But it's something that's not for everyone, so people may check it out and don't like it, so therefor I'm a "hipster". And I wouldn't mind being called one, and sometimes my friends call me as a joke and I laugh, but when it's done just to shoot down the things I like, it feels very unfair.

Real hipsters are simply real people. They believe in certain sets of ideas and trying to live by them...just like everyone else. Qualities or characteristics such as pretentiousness, self-grandiosity, etc., that people hate about hipsterism are only displayed by the FAKE hipsters. Fake hipsters are just wannabes that want only the perks (e.g., look cool since they saw that hipsterism was becoming mainstream) and none of the work that comes with being hipsters. *Remember: if you see a dude with a handlebar mustache wearing skinny jeans and a wayfarer sunglasses walking into an Urban Outfitters*, _that's_ a FAKE hipster.

I thought the definition was to be 'wannabes' as you say, hipsters are trend followers by definition. The problem i guess is that people also use it as a label for anything different so its a stifling label as well and means to shut down creativity. Its also burring of creativity in the sense that hipsters tend to adopt specious aesthetic trends out of artists and even revolutionaries, generally having an upper hand at being social curators rather than being able to imaginatively create, and generally being comfortably high up the income ladder to actually afford to pretend to be 'bohemian' whilst the actual bohemians can no longer afford to do so. I guess i just think of the word less in fashion as 'bohemian' to say what you mean be 'real hipster' its a matter of definitions though. And the 'fake hipster' I guess what was known in Paris as 'bohemian bourgousie' or 'boho chic', its nothing new, existed since about the beginning of the 70s, which is what i think is generally what 'hipster' actually means. It used to mean jazz enthusiasts who were actually 'hip' though so whatever!.

so what is a real hipster?
@Alex-hn3cy
@Alex-hn3cy 8 лет назад
The way we dress, our actions, thoughts and style we associate ourselves to are shaped by our environment. The hipster doesn't choose to become a hipster simply because of the influences that were present during the shaping or this person's archetypal stages. A person that only acts, thinks and communicates his or hers stylistic persona can be an indication that this individual is struggling to establish an original identity. If someone observes another individual of a different identity of style and begins to hate and judge this person for being different is in a process of attempting to fracture the social masses in levels of superiority (this is part of human nature and is a process to attempt to avoid social homogeneity). Whether the basis of fracture is wealth, race, style, sexual orientation etc. We humans are bound to dissociate (through hate usually) ourselves in different groups which results in the enhancing of creative and intellectual activity.

I feel like a lot of the issue isn't hipsters at all, but more people stealing from other cultural references or other cultures entirely because they can't form any sort of original thought or even elaborate on the state of things that they exist. In other words, scene kids. Posers. But even hipsters identify with something typically. But like a lot of groups they are criticized unfairly for things they don't actually do.

as I non-American, living in US, what I have experienced when people say they don't like Americans, is that, they are projecting personal experiences, maybe even trauma, and self defense. Christy Wampole's article makes sense. She seems to be addressing people who identify as hipsters and whose identities can be limited to a handful of labels. If you identify as a hipster (or any other group), enough to be offended by a generalization, then you are not secure in your identity as an individual. Nerdwriter's insecurity and snark toward Wampole in this video is a good example of that.

I always thought hipsters were a backlash against trend appropriation by capitalism. Normal people develop a bit of unique culture, middle aged white dudes in suits come along, study it, put a label on it, and sell it as a shitty knockoff. The once tight knit community is flooded by people who fundamentally don't understand and only appreciate on the same superficial level as the guys in suits. Perverting what perhaps once had potential for genuine expression into a weird uncanny valley mock-up of human expression. Hipsters take that fake re-appropriation and re-re-appropriate it in a genuine way as a hyperbolic gesture expressing their contempt for it. While simultaneously pursuing immunity from being labeled, packaged, and mass produced.

Everybody hates hipsters, but seriously, what's the alternative? The 21st century until now has been a total trainwreck in terms of popular culture, economy and politics. Thank God there are people, albeit a small minority, that care about local manufacturing, fair trade, good style and good quality. Then of course the trend gets completely undermined by the fascist brands like H&M and Starbucks that try to sell you the idea of "alternative lifestyle" to rob you of some more money. Everyone has some hipster tendencies. I think(for me at least) a deciding factor in whether someone's hipster tendencies are obnoxious or not is how genuine or natural those tendencies seem. If the habits a "hipster" exhibits seem forced or unnatural, it' kind of irritating, but if they seem genuine, I'm not bothered. I ride a fixed gear bicycle (a hipster tendency), but I also wear shirts from Old Navy and Target, and I buy food at Sam's Club. Moral of the story-we've all got some hipster blood inside of us. Complaining about hipsters is possibly the least productive and most thought devoid thing anyone can do, right up there with the old person yelling at youths to get off their lawn and turn the rock and roll down.

Love your insight & reviews on your art. Yet: Your stand against propaganda colors you strongly as a probable hipster, although Hipster is a label without much real attributes except for Social & Self claim. In it self not a terrible thing, but your defense of which is the embodiment of what is wrong with it. Coupled by weak evidence & singular examples, you merely propagate the New York times article, Ironic. So go to france, be glad, be happy, have your moments, but do not affix those moments of joy to being a hipster or even worst the greater societal good ( as malleable as it might be) In short, your need to defend such articles is a disappointment. I think the word 'Hipster' is for the most part a pop culture method of shunning people who are different and explaining them away. It's almost a way to encourage uniformity. I mean I'm sure that Hipsters exist. I know there are people who obsess about irony and who commodify culturally appropriated foods and rituals; but I'm pretty sure that a lot of the people who are called hipsters are just politically charged vegans, or people who like foreign movies. There are a lot of things to hate about the archetypal Hipster, but I don't think many people actually fit that archetype and more often then not It's used as an insult towards people with divergent interests and political opinions.

I really appreciate the eloquence of each point being made, and I agree fully. Should you take a little time to care about others and be on the giving end of compassion, you come to learn a label cannot extend to the reaches of people with complex lives, ways of thinking, and problems. Though, to me, judging is a necessity which allows you to make good choices. By observing people and situations, you determine what is best for you. But there is a difference between that sort of judging and applying labels or saying negative statements relying fully on opinion.
