best advice is, r kid , have a bash/word of mouth, if you can put up with loads of hours ( to make a decent wage). the crack is, the turn over of waggoners is massive. they spend "plenty" to get the ticket, 12 month later, f/that. some get a good crack, alas, not many. good luck.
Hayley you’re doing great, the reversing will come , as others have said here take your time don’t let others rush you. Every days a school day and it will all be second nature in no time. I have been driving these for over 34 years and I still cock it up now and then. Take care and stay safe.
Brilliant video Hayley you did really well. When I passed my test the guy at the agency I was signed up to said I've got just the job for you I was shunting trailers at the Cowley Rover parts delivery centre I spent more time going backwards than forwards but it was great experience. All credit to your company for giving you the time in the factory as a shunter lots of others would have just told you to get on with it. I'm sure you and them will reap the rewards of this time spent gaining confidence.
@James Ross .... And I hauled 360's and Dump Trucks in and out of the Cowley plant when they demolished it James !!! 1993 if I remember correctly ....I was bringing a punctured Volvo A30 back to London and at 11 pm on the A40 I got pulled over .... The cops thought the Dump truck was about to fall off the bed !!! Looking at the lowloader from behind and in the dark also , you would think 'twas about to go .....They were good times ... Let's try and be encouraging towards Hayley ... There seems to be something very genuine about the lady
You did well, using the space and setting it up is the trick. When you parked the flat you were more fluent. My dad taught me, he used to say, stop using the steering wheel! So he meant go from your good side, if you get it wrong stop, and pull forward and give it another bite. You will crack it very quickly. Thanks for posting
Shunting is great for practicing manoeuvres. The condition you received that truck is disgraceful. Ive never had that in my years of trucking. Now on freight trains, those locomotive cabs are just used by everybody. You’ll get the hang of manipulating the auto box with the throttle after a while. Biggest tips I got when starting about reversing that helped me: 1. Use small inputs, don’t start turning the wheel left right like mad, that’ll come with experience as you will know exactly what it does before the trailer does it: 2. Don’t concentrate on where the back of the trailer is going, but draw an imaginary line that the centre axle of the trailer needs to follow and try stick to that. 3. The shorter the trailer, the smaller your steering movement wants to be. 4. NEVER LET ANYBODY HURRY YOU, if you need to take an extra shunt or 5, do it. If you want to get out and take a look, do it. Any idiot laughing at you for doing that has either forgotten how he started or will inevitably hit something soon enough. Best of luck! It’ll seem become second nature soon.
@Jim Bob I’ve only tried ETS once recently. I did a reverse on it. It’s not completely the same, but yes, I would say I does help to get used to reversing. I think it mostly helps to think about which way to turn the steering wheel. When I first started I imaged I had two ropes attached to each corner of my trailer to the steering wheel. You pull to imaginary rope in the direction you want the back to go. So if for example you want to trailer to go right, you pull with the imaginary rope attached to your wheel, so you’ll be turning your wheel to the left. Hope that makes sense. See what works for you :)
Excellent demo, every learner should be watching this and listening to your experiences and good advice. You must have been a great teacher. Well done.
The best drivers' have fast hands, and slow feet! I'm in stitches 🤣🤣🤣 a DAF... fast!? Haha, SCANIA all the way! 😎 Congratulations on your new work, I will keep an eye out for your plate hanging on for dear life🙃
@@preddy2940 I've not had the experience of MAN or Renolvo's, but other drivers' don't speak very highly of them. A Volvo's comfort on a SCANIA chassis/engine/gearbox would be a hell of a machine!
Once again, thanks for a non sugar coated honest review of the difficulties of artic reversing. I think you will be an excellent class 1 driver. Good luck 👍
Hayley that reverse into that door was superb,i know guys in my workplace who would struggle with that and they have been driving class 1 for years!! Well done👌🚚
I think everyone can remember there first day as a class1 driver, it's a day you won't forget. 😉 Mine was with M&S in Hemel Hempstead, yogurt became milk, and milk became everywhere. 😋
My first day involved blind reversing into a side road as I couldn’t get out the other end of a road as it narrowed to less than 8 feet with no warning signs! Took me about 15 mins to turn and I upset a lot of “rat run” rush hour traffic! Cars parked both sides all very tight had to get out 10 times to check everything but still saved doing accident forms!
Day 9 of Class 1 was there. Bay 12 with Chilled. Loads of room but I still fuffed it thanks to my alleged "Buddy" baulking at me. Got there in the end.
Hahah your damn right ... deffo sticks with you ... being chucked a folder of paper work with some keys and a trailer number written on it and told to crack on ... had the gaffer behind me in his wagon all the way up the m6 to Warrington... talk about a sweat on
Well done Haley. My tip if it helps. A farmer once showed me (On an really old truck without power steering) to think of the steering wheel as a 50p, move it slowly one section at a time which I have since gone on to find tends to stop me from over steering and then having to wind it madly back again to correct it on modern stuff. Drive safe and enjoy your new drives.
Fantastic to see you in an artic, first day at school again Hayley. All the best for the future, and to K Transport for being a great company. Shout out to Colin Best regards from the Black Country. John.
First day went well. When I was learning to reverse I was always told to baby steer, ie smallest movement on the steering wheel to acheive the direction you want. When you was going in middle door, the jackknife was correct but when you was told to take it off, just enough steer to bring your unit in line with trailer. you are not trying to change the trailers direction at this point. If you want stop, handbrake on and assess. You can now see where the vehicle is heading from both sides. Now you can see what small adjustments need to be made. once continuing you should be able to reverse on the mirrors, if too much of the rear of the trailer is in the left mirror a small(baby) steer into that mirror ie left hand down a bit to left mirror and vice versa keeping the back of the trailer in both mirrors. Good luck
Well done Haley 👏 your dad will be looking down at you and proud of you as I am practicing makes perfect and remember when you are reversing always get out and look if you are unsure x
Congrats on your 1st day everything will come with practice. From the little I can gather as I'm new here, but will serve you well in this industry is your calm, easy going and level headed attitude.
Wow Haley, mighty impressive for a newbie. If I could do half as well on my first day when I start class 1 soon, I will be very happy. Thanks for the tips, some great comment feedback, tips etc too. Keep on trucking!
Good on you Hayley, seems you getting on with it, remember starting out on class 1 back in early eighties, made a few mistakes, but learning is all part of it. Big respects to you, drive well, and stay safe!
@Zinc Partriot ...."any man ( or Woman ! ) that never made a mistake never made anything " .... I'd say that if someone started a conversation with stories about clusterf.cks , silly situations and downright stupidity , it would merit becoming a theatre comedy !! Shout out to Jake from Jake's Autos Nottingham , thanks for the help in getting me into my locked truck back in '95 .... Engine running , doors locked and John locked outside in his boxers and boots at 8 pm ish , first week of January and raining ..... One expensive pee .. The mighty Foden with the early fly by wire ' , now you'd be halfway across a roundabout before that yoke would decide to pull .... New drivers had little problems coz they weren't set in their ways .... You needed to allow the truck to feel the load and respond ..if you hit the accelerator you'd confuse the ECU .....oooh
Well done , reversing is an art and takes some learning and I'm impressed for your first few days. I was always taught regarding reversing, that what ever lock you put on the steering wheel take it off twice as quick. That was you will straighten up quicker. And also when you have to correct a mistake you don't need to go as far forward you just need good mirror checks and quicker steering to get results. 👍
You are doing OK love I remeber many years ago before HGV TESTS being told to take an AEC artic down to the docks to pick up a Load only ever drove a Bedford TK rigid then in the deep end springs to mind !
congratulations hayley great vlog hats off to you you handled those reverses bang on nothing perfect the first time after passing keep trying and you will be perfect and spot on with the bays and door ways keep up the good work xx
Nice video. Remember to take your time. Don’t be afraid to shunt, no matter how many times it takes you. Your always learning and you will still make mistakes years later.
Really informative, thanks Hayley!! Congrats on doing it,looking good reversing, can’t wait to try. just a newbie… wanna be a trucker ! 😄 🤞 you’ve such a positive and honest attitude 👍
So proud of you Hayley you just get on with it and a smile as well xx What you have to remember is with the drag system the tractor unit is nearly twice the length of yours so the steering pivot point is that much further back so as you said you could correct it more easily . So in reality you need to just accept you have you have passed your test in the drag outfit and now move forward with a shorter tractor unit and the longer trailer and the steering pivot in reality is just behind the cab . As another driver had said quick hand and slow foot xx With the doorway just make a mental note of the width difference between trailer and the marker posts and get half each side xx You will make this no problem xx
I have just come across your vids, so first off: 🥳congratulations on passing your test and those maneuvers were absolutely fine. I've been on class 1 for about 3 years now and still make a pigs ear of reversing from time to time. Even some older drivers have said it will always happen every now and again. Just watched 26 too, the camera debate. Very good points. Trucks, bikes and guitars. And I applied to K's once. It would have been a pleasure to have met you. Happy trucking.
It’s great there’s more women drivers coming in to the industry…..my only advice after driving class 1s for 27 is take your time and never ever drive tired if your late your late better to have a hour sleeping then drive tired
Well done Hayley 👍 nothing improves your general driving and reversing than experience. It’ll all click after a few months and you’ll be slotting that trailer in to ridiculous places with ease. Once it starts taking longer to get the paperwork and reference numbers than to reverse in somewhere you’ll know you’re a real trucker 😝 longer trailers without rear steering axles require more steering to manoeuvre than shorter trailers and even less if they have got rear steer. Gentle movements needed in that case. I have to reverse petrol tankers with no overhang so they go all over the place really easy. Keep up the good work we are all heroes keeping the economy going. 👍
Hayley congratulations on gaining your C+E licence. watching you on the video your doing absolutely fine you have the right personality and mindset to become a great class 1 driver if your ever unsure when reversing in difficult situations don’t just rely on on others Don’t be afraid to stop hand brake on and get out and have a look for yourself at least you had some experience coming from driving a ridgid when I passed my class 1 HGV I went straight from a car to an artic within 10months I was driving out around Europe and to Saudi mind that was back in the 70’s 30 + years later I’m just about to hang up me gloves ..
Its all about practicing, reversing into tight bays and using the space you have. And I've watched American truck drivers making a mess of reversing and they have longer trailers than we Brits use. So keep going at it and in no time at all you'll find your itch. Cheers Hailey.
Just found your video. Very inspirational and a great source of information for new drivers. Your doing great. Very impressed by your abilities. It helps having decent people who help you learn . Seems like the guys you work with are good mentors. 👍
You’re doing well Hayley, get those glasses cleaned as they are minging!!!! You know that I’m only winding you up. Take care, and keep her lit. Good luck with getting your seat replaced.
We all started on day one looking like numpty when reversing. It's nothing but seat time and practice. When reversing a tri axle use the middle one as your guide that's your pivot point. So sort of stear that axle where you want to go .
Cool vid, like everything practice makes perfect, dealing with different trailers, different heights, different lengths, different axles maybe too. Well done
Hello Hayley been looking forward to seeing your first class 1 video!! I have also just finished my first week in the Artic have been driving to Daventry and Nottinghamshire trunking! I have really been enjoying the whole experience! we just have a very tight depo which is challenging but good experience! wish you all the best! :)
Doing well. Not bad at all. I’m told practise, practise, practise. Take it slow and if unsure, get out and have a look. Looking forward to seeing you on the road. 👏🏴👍
Take your time and look and plan your manouver. If unsure get out and look. I find myself the tight and tricky place are easier to reverse into then reversing on a supermarket bay🤣🤣🤣🤣 my first run out in an artic was with a 50ft double decker rear steer. Safe travels 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Don't worry too much. Best advice i was ever given was when reversing always try & point your trailer in the direction you wanna go thats half the battle. Make small adjustments with the wheel & most importantly take your time. If in doubt get out was my motto
17:00 - I was saying "pull it out a bit more!" (been playing way to much Truck Sim lol. Well done! and the best of luck to you. I'd love to start HGV driving, but I haven't even got my regular license yet, as i lived abroad for half my life :D
Jim Bob Hey, I drove buses for 5years and then I had my back fused and been bored now for 10yrs with arthritis 🙄 (btw I don't miss the buses either 😂😂)
Reversing them must be ridiculously hard. Especially when you can properly see. And you got to make sure you not hitting your cab when maneuvering the trailer. Give yourself a great big pat on the back. You doing amazing xxx
Well done halye the reversing will get easier the more times you do it as always practice makes perfect and shunting trailers is a great way to get the experience of manouvering in tight spaces going backwards just rememeber to know your enviroment and whats around you and give yourself as much space as you can find infact the more space the better and never be afraid to put the handbrake on and get out to have a look to see where your at which is what i used to do when i first started out.. My first artic job was driving to switzerland and id never been outside the uk up to that point so you can imagine how much i was bricking it when i got to dover to ship out to calais and was told by the steveodre i had to reverse up the ramp and into the wings at the rear of the vessel…yeah i was sweating bullets but done it in one and perfect parked between the chain restraints holes on the floor😊 Every time you get better its a personal victory for you and eventually you will do it wothout even thinking so just keep at it girl your doing just great and to be honest from watching this you have already nailed it when you reveresed inside the building coz its a nightmare going from daylight into a dark factory loading area well done you..👍😎
Well done Haley never be afraid to ask or has been said stop get out and have a look after 33 yrs class 1 I’ve just retired and everyday is a learning day have fun in your career enjoy everyday and stay safe 👍
I thought u did very well .remember when I first passed 16 years ago I had this rear steer trailer it took 14 goes to get in topps tiles got a round of applause though. Now on brick and block building sites that's improved my reversing a hell of a lot. Well done keep on trucking x
That is one of the trickiest reverses I know, your going from brightly lit area to a dark are, through a tiny doorway, and you did fine from what I could see.
@@chrishoggett1375 I’ve had drivers who prefer coming later in the day, when the sun is behind the canopy, and it’s a little darker because it’s easier for them to see.
