PLEASE do NOT apologize for the length of this video. I am a third year teacher, but it's my first year in first grade. I have been LOVING your videos. It helps me with so many strategies to use with my students. Another bonus is we also use Wonders so what we're doing lines up with what you're doing. Please do not make shorter videos! lol

I teach first grade in Northern Kentucky and my first graders (especially this year) are still working at a kindergarten level and your videos help me come up with ideas for them in small groups to really meet the standards that they are lacking from last year! You are just the cutest! And this Vlog is basically like a mini PD so you keep it up girl. You are so skilled at your craft. I’m actually wondering if there’s anything you are not good at? Teaching, working out, drawing, baking… You do it all! And regarding our current struggle in education. I feel like we should all be voicing the current struggles we are in and are aware of. As educators in the classroom we are the only ones who know what is really happening. Change is only going to happen with advocacy and raising public awareness. If your job is threatened by your use of this right you should turn to your union for protection. ✊

I’ve been obsessed with watching ALL your youtube videos recently!! I found you at the beginning of this school year and you don’t know how much you’ve helped me as a first year K/1 combo teacher!!! It has been rough trying to navigate teaching a combo class/reaching independence for small groups (without a consistent aide). I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind (I know you are such a busy bee doing everything and anything but I’d appreciate the help!) 1. You have “Switch it list” as part of your centers. What is that? 2. Do you do small groups rotations for math too? Or just whole group grade-level lessons? 3. For your literacy small groups, it looks like you have 4 rotations. Do you split it (2 K groups and 2 1st grade groups)? 4. You mention a resource that helps your Ks learn the directionality of writing letters. Do you mind sharing that resource? Thank you Mayleen! 💛

And for watching :) Switch It is part of the Reading Simplified Academy - I give you a peek into what it involves in this video, but you'd have to join the academy for the full breakdown/knowledge/resources! :) It's like $30 a month so it would best be done when you have time to go through her courses. It's set up as a professional development. You could ask your school to pay for it! 2. I don't do rotations for math yet! In previous years I have but this year I don't have the time right now. 3. No I don't split them! They are mixed! Please watch my VLOG #4 from this year to hear me explain centers! 4. The resource I use for letters is the Peterson Handwriting Print Rhythm! Try google image searching it!

When I taught first we sang the because song to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb. 🎵B-E-C-A-U-S-E…U-S-E…U-S-E… B-E-C-A-U-S-E…because, because, because.🎵 It really encouraged longer sentences and it was adorable to hear them singing it quietly to themselves during writing.
