Steven Slate demonstrates the fat analog sound and powerful workflow of Slate Digital plugins by turning some average rock drums into pro sounding monsters! And because he can tweak ENTIRE CHANNEL STRIPS all at once in the Virtual Mix Rack, he accomplishes this in LESS THAN TEN MINUTES in one seamless take!

Actually insane. If you click at 1:34 where he starts and listen and compare it to 9:07 you can really hear it. This sold me on getting the everything bundle this Wednesday

I know people have criticised the need to load all the Slate stuff in VMR but it's just like using an analogue console only totally custom! it's got that workflow of a console and really that's a selling point no-one mentions. Oh and it can be a different console every time lol. I will never go back! also thankyou for not doing a "Waves" by making your bundles completely unreachable for the newer working professional. your pricing is fantastic and you products are always excellent!

Definately I love it for that especially saving chains, for example when using Superior Drummer I now have presets that are the chains for that set of kits which I can tweak to the song rather then 5 plugins I need to tweak for example a pre73, ssl eq, fg-116 blue and neve eq. VMR just needs a transient designer and a gate and Ill be set.

Mr. Slate, I am a convert. Starting tomorrow night, it's bye bye Waves, hello Slate Digital. Been a Waves user for the last 10 years but your tutorials taught me everything I know. Thank you.

Steven, DOOD! Seriously, the personal touch/communication is such a good thing, and is always appreciated. Great to see you incorporating our Cubase format! Ya know, these DAW's all do great stuff, and this drum "tutorial" is truly amazing. You played back the raw drums, the mind/ear say pretty darn nice. THEN, POW, CLA type results. You must have a really souped up 'puter to handle that many instances of your stuff. I'd challenge you to do that with , say 8-10 instances of FG-X! haha. BTW, I don't have individual faders for as many of the drum outs as you. Call it lazy, and those Blackbird samples are SO sweet, really loving them. For those here, I HAVE to say that I heard Steven's complete song "Watcha Doin' To Me" and, as a songwriter myself, can say I'd-a been proud to have it in MY catalog. Add to that, the production is so tight....loosely tight, Chili Peppers-like, and the vocal is solid-good. Steven, if you're not careful you'll be juggling 2 careers...or is it 3?

I'm surprised the 116 wasn't touched at all in this tutorial. Works pretty well on snare drums for me - and room mics :-)

Really intersting hering certain elements of the kit in solo, particularly the snare close mic. alot of the snare sound is coming from the room and overheads. I started getting worried after a few minutes thinking, wtf happened this is sounding very wierd. until 7 minutes in and it all started to really take shape and make sense. End result? Aswomeness!!

Hello, know if all of Slate's drum sounds on this program will be on the Pearl Mimic Pro module? Please tell me, if possible, what you about what is on and not on the module. I was sort of hoping the Bonham's drum sounds would be on it. Super thanks and very nice presentation.

Steven, can we see you doing that in the context of a song, on Addictive Drums 2? Having real drum tracks recorded on 200 000 dollar equipment is good, but the real feat, in my opinion, is to mix crappy vst drums for it to pass the radio audition. Can you do that? If you did that, I’d like to listen to the result, can you provide a link? Thanks.

Awesome! One question, you dont apply any high pass filters, is this because it's only drums, without bass and other instruments? I always applied high passes for everything except kick and bass. Any comment on this would be highly appreciated! Great video!

Steven is a master, no doubt! Of course the goal here was to get a modern and processed drum sound, but how about a more natural and mellow tone? Everything he does he's seeking THIS modern and processed sound, but I would love to see how he would approach a different vibe. In my humble opinion as a drummer and audio engineer, it was way too processed. Of course, I'm talking without seeing the context here, just from what I'm hearing.

Is there a number to call for technical help? I bought the slate vmr used it for a year with great results. I moved a year ago and started setting everything back up finally and my vmr plugins are not accessible now no matter what I do? They are highlighted in red in my daw, studio one and even the ones I used on old recorded and mixed songs are not being applied to my songs anymore. I of course have my ilock plugged in.
@miloskomazec845

So lets just say your mixing volume for a snare is at -6db... you then add a compressor and all these things to it. Doing all this.. it will then increase the volume of the snare. Now your snare is almost or even over 0db. Do you turn it down once youre done all the compression etc..?
@alexadams1820
@alexadams1820 7 лет назад
Yes it's called gain staging. Once you get the amount of reduction you want, you need to pull the output of the compressor down to match the volume of the snare without the compressor. It's easy to get fooled that things sound better when they are loud.
@izvarzone
@izvarzone 4 года назад
i usually try in and out the same volume… especially important if there many plugins in chain, so you can on/off any or reorder them and there would be less volume change. You can't make it 100% ideally because dynamics is different now.
@ivanponomaryov6454
@ivanponomaryov6454 6 лет назад
How are you routed your drums, namely room and overhead from stereo to mono tracks?
@rolandherenow3134
@rolandherenow3134 6 лет назад
In the "Before" comparison, it sounds as though the room mic has been pushed forward and all the other tracks turned down. You can even see the overhead faders jumping to a lower volume position in the "Before" section of the video, which then creates that hollow, gutless, annoying "all room" sound, which is unpleasant in any brand of drum software. This setting has nothing to do with the plugins or drum samples. It's a choice to take the intimacy out of the drum mix to create max contrast. Point is, if you purposely start with a low quality mix or hollow sound, then it makes anything afterward sound better. Slate has great products-I own them, too-but watching videos such as these often makes me feel that we're being duped by volume tricks.
