I heard Randy Rhoads for the first time in Crazy Train, and I was blown into utter shock and disbelief at his talents. This time I needed a live recording to see him in action. Elizabeth you may know, or not, but Randy was a classical trained guitarist. There are recordings of him playing. Ozzy always had great guitar players even after Randy passed.

The Charismatic Voice, the best version of Mr Crowley is on the Randy Rhoads tribute album, released in 1987. The second solo on that version of the track, is simply other worldly. It's absolutely magic

There's a reason why Randy is so respected even 39 years after his passing... if I remember correctly, he was only 24 when he died. Nobody can imagine how his career would have evolved had he lived on, because he was so ahead of his time.

This isn't live in concert but I'll take anything from this period. There are actual live videos of Randy but few and far in between. My buddy and I had tickets to see Ozzy with Randy in 81 at a small one level venue (3500 capacity maybe) and Ozzy cancelled the show. Didn't realize there would never be another chance. Saw Ozzy when they resumed after Randy's tragic accident with Brad Gillis. It was still really good. Also love Rudy Sarzo. Saw him again in '83 with Jake E Lee.

I'm with Spanish Peaches. So jealous. I wasn't quit old enough to go to concerts yet. But my very first concert was Ozzy (Bark at the Moon tour) with Metallica opening. It was just a few months before Cliff Burton died. I was able to see him perform Whiplash. RIP to both. Some of the greatest in their craft.

You should've seen her reaction to Dimebag's guitar solo in Cemetary Gates (Pantera). She LOVED it! But then, who wouldn't? I can't imagine anyone with any sense or taste who couldn't appreciate the extreme amount of talent Dime and Randy had. It makes me sick how soon they were taken from us. The world was robbed of their greatness and of even greater things to come from them both.😢

Well said. As a guitar player I think it's neat that a vocal coach would pay attention to the guitar. What I've noticed is that she listens at a different level. She picks up on things and then some.

It just tears at my heart to see Randy playing. He was a brilliant guitarist, blending classical guitar and rock guitar, forming these melodic solos that move through the octaves forwarding the song. He was taken from us song young. What would have done if he had lived.

Considering how much Randy DID do, and is STILL managing to do in 2022...yeah it'd be absolutely nutty to think how things would be if he had a living influence over that.

Randy was a devout classical guitarist and never stopped taking lessons, even while on tour with Ozzy. Usually he ended up teaching the teacher but it was always a learning experience for him as well. His mastery of mode and meter is unmatched to this day. He was, and always will be, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. RIP Randy Rhoads.

What I love about this is when it basically changes from a vocal analysis to an appreciation of Randy's solos. That look of total awe, the tear to the eye basically sums up the feeling that any guitarist or indeed musician would feel when hearing this legend . He is quoted as being an influence by so many and One can only imagine what he would have achieved had he not been taken so young. R.I.P. Randy Rhoads.

I still can't really listen to it without tearing up. Some of the most beautiful guitar playing of all time underscored by the horrible tragedy that would take place not long after it was recorded. Hearing it brings the magnitude of the loss even more sharply into focus. RIP Randy.

We were lucky to have so much KILLER music to listen to as "legendary" albums were released weekly and often times more than 1 at once....the 70's were the golden age of ROCK and the 60's were second Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll 4ever

@@midnittkr as someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s I have to agree. The 60s and 70s were a magical period for rock n roll that I don’t think can ever be replicated. Sabbath, Hendrix, Janis, the early days of punk rock… so much good stuff. It honestly makes me sad that it seems like rock n roll and guitar driven music is… I don’t want to say “dead” but on life support maybe?

This footage taped in obscurity prior to a random Canadian show was seemingly lost for decades before surfacing as practically the only live video of Randy performing that exists. That no one could know of the importance at the time. At first seeming plodding on the metronome, the two solos ..... the cameraman must have not known what was coming because he zeroed in on Randy a little slow the first time, but not the second ...... benefit from that tempo's space. Somehow Randy could pull off live versions of studio parts that were multitracked without sounding like anything was missing and even adding those squeals that are even better than hers!

Randy Rhodes is my favorite guitarist. My favorite story about him was that when he auditioned for Ozzy-and this was told by Ozzy, himself-he came in with his guitar and practice amp, played some stuff and Ozzy immediately said, “Whoa, whoa, whoa! Stop right there! You got the job!” And Randy said, “But I haven’t played anything yet, I was just warming up”

Is there anyone out here who thinks that Elizabeth reactions to music are anything less than endearing and utterly heartwarming? The woman is almost brought to Tears by guitar solos for Christ sakes. Watching Elizabeth’s face melt upon hearing RR just takes me back to being a teenager and dropping the needle on “Blizzard of Ozz” for the first time. I’d figured out some guitar stuff by then, and we had Van Halen 1 to chew on, but Randy was simply otherworldly. Still stings that we lost him so shortly thereafter.

And also, I think she feels the pain that we’ve lived with for 40 years. We’ve been cheated out of a wealth of music, with Randy being taken too soon from us. Saying that, he was leaving Ozzy to become a classical guitarist…

Theres a story about randy being in Europe. While he was there he said im looking fo a guitar teacher. One of the people who works for the band said to randy, you're so good why do you need more guitar lessons. Randy replied, because i can learn something new everyday. Thats why randy is the best and will always be the best. His approach to voicing the strings is what made him something special. Nobody has even come close.

I remember taking guitar lessons and my teacher said, I can't charge you, you teach me just as much as I teach you. You need a more advanced teacher, you're as good as me. I told him no, that's you're time, I have to pay you for that. And, you may not see it, but I learn something new every week. Plus, even if I didn't, I enjoy jamming. So I know where Randy was coming from.

Dear Elizabeth. I'm a 63 yr-old guitarist from Scotland. In 1980 I heard this song in Glasgow at a pub. I was completely gobsmacked with Randy Rhoads. I'd been in an Black Sabbath cover band in the mid seventies throughout the U.K., so I was already an avid fan of Ozzy's. But Randy, He greatly impacted mine spirit and me guitar playing. 100% Agreed, and also the ending solo on Tonight. For me you can feel the emotion he's putting into both. Personally Diary is the better of the 2 albums. Randy didn't like it because he felt rushed, and it wasn't as polished as he wanted, but for me because of that looseness it has more feeling to it.

Back in the day, we'd play "Tonight" and as it was fading out, we'd slowly keep turning the volume up. I'm sure everybody has done that, at one time or another. It's one of the most mind-blowing solos ever recorded. I really can't think of any other guitarist who played that way. Randy was like the rock star from another galaxy. Truly unique.

Fun fact, Randy Rhoads mom owned a classical music school. He quickly became a teacher there after basically learning everything there was to learn at the age or 17 or whatever it was. Makes sense that his compositions would grab Elizabeth more than others. He was truly one of the greats. Gone far too soon.

There are two university scholarships for music students awarded in his name at UCLA and California State University, Northridge. I believe his mom used to award them up to her death a few years ago.

Since his new doctors took him off the dozens of medications he was on, but weren't needed, after his 4 wheeler accident, he is much easier to understand. A lot of his trademark way of speaking was to being over medicated by bad doctors.

I saw Ozzy with Randy at Music Hall in Cleveland in the Blizzard of Oz tour - I was about 10 rows back from Randy and I will never forget it. I had tickets to Ozzy's Diary of a Madman tour (also in Cleveland) in January of 1982, but a snowstorm coupled with a broken down car forced me to miss it (I still have my untorn ticket stubs). A few months later Randy was dead and I was pretty devastated. Just imagine what great music the world was deprived of when that happened! Randy will always be in my top 5 rock guitar players list.

I am so happy to see people still today discovering the musical genius of Randy Rhoads. He was the #1 influence on me to pick up a guitar in 1983 and I still play his guitar parts to this day. It was such a loss to the music world the day he died. Imagine what he would be doing today if he had not taken that plane ride. Great review as usual. Also, Randy was a virtuoso in his own right. I read somewhere, that when they would go on tour, he would seek out guitar teachers on the hopes of just learning something else to put in his tool box. However, he usually ended up teaching these guitar teachers something they didn't know instead. Remarkable musician

I’ve always loved this song and when I heard the solos I was similarly awestruck… I didn’t know who Randy was back then, but I knew whoever played that was a god. Those solos, especially the second one, are a crowning masterpiece of his career. I’ve gotten back into Ozzy recently and have fallen in love with learning his guitar again. The complexity of what Rhoads is doing is jaw dropping. Its almost like hes playing the piano on the fret board...literally punching in the notes...never seen ANY player play like this. I just come across your channel this evening and it captured me. This particular song just stands out of the whole Ozzy catalogue. It is unique in many ways. I never can get enough listening to it. Never. I showed it to my baby daughter when she was six now she's twelve and her musical preferences changed a great deal while she grew. But she still loves this song. I started listening to Ozzy when I was 11. I started playing guitar when I was 14,... (1984), all because of a kid I met at a group home I lived in in 1981,... Who LOVED Randy Rhoads,... Now at 52, I STILL play and STILL well up with tears from Randy's solos. Even watching THIS video and your AWESOME reactions,... I recently started getting back to my roots, (playing Ozzy/Randy Rhoads) and I notice that NO ONE, NOT ONE GUITARIST I've heard on RU-vid, seems to be able to mimic Randy's playing. (Yes, I'm well aware that he triple tracked his Solos with one left, one right and the main center. It's nearly impossible to play exactly like the recordings,... But dammit, I won't stop playing these songs until I have them down perfectly, or until my fingers fall off!

His technical skill is genius. But...there are many guitarists over the years displaying that level of virtuosity. However, Randy was literally in a class by himself in his phrasing and composition which is staggeringly complex. That ultimately bought him the ticket into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame under the title "Musical Excellence." That aspect of his playing has never been duplicated and likely never will. He was just masterful in every regard. Miss him immensely.

Agreed - many many guitar players out there, especially in present day, that are at that level and even beyond. However. Nobody plays like Randy, and nobody ever will. His playing is timeless, and will always be considered top-end in every regard. If you watch him play his solos live, like crazy train in the after hours show, he just THROWS himself into it. This is probably one of my favorite reactions you've done seen the amount of pleasure you derive from the musicianship add structure of Ozzy and especially Randy inside note Randy Rhoads used to take guitar lessons in every city he visited

If you really want to appreciate Randy's classical background PLEASE listen to Diary of a Madman. It's beyond next level, just a masterpiece IMO.

“Diary of a Madman” and/or “ You can’t kill rock-n-roll” and/or “Tonight” are more examples of less is more in the solos. Randy’s ability to make his solos an actual song within the song is outstanding. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! And thank you for sharing!! Love it!!

That solo is one of my favorites of all time. A great light went out when Randy passed away.

I read in a magazine where Randy Rhoads said that he was not impressed with his solos. He said to him he didn't think it was real music, but said this is what kids want to hear and this is what I was hired to play. So I play it. He then goes on talking about classical music in which he was highly interested in and thought highly of. His statement blew my mind.

its probably a similar scenario to alot of singers hating their own voice. music is a weird relationship. to the artist it may seem like not good enough, but to the audience its heaven on earth.

I would imagine that talented artists have a lot better ears than we do for what something SHOULD sound like and they have a clear idea in their head of what something should sound like, so if it doesn't meet that higher standard they hate it

I know he had told Ozzy he would be leaving after the tour to pursue studying or teaching classical guitar, so that statement wouldn't surprise me, but I do question why he would pursue a career, in the first place, in the metal world. He started Quiet Riot with Kevin Dubrow and seemed to genuinely love the genre

Kinda reminds me of Allan Holdsworth (RIP), who had this really unique beautiful guitar voice/sound/tone but had a draconian self critique, and often mentioned he wished he could play another instrument like the trumpet or saxophone as he tried to sound like that in his playing.

i think the fact that Rhoads' classical instrumental piece, "Dee", is placed right next to "Suicide solution" on the album Blizzard of Ozz, is arguably a perfect summary of rhoads style and range. you come off this beautiful piece that you would expect from a baroque composer and dismount right into that driving distorted riff opening suicide solution. like "Yes, i can fill philharmonic concert halls. i can also BURN THEM DOWN WITH A GLANCE." man knew guitars like a samurai knew his sword. born to a classical music teacher and an electrician, it's like the gods themselves decreed his advent as the guitar messiah.

You have to remember this was recorded live. No tricks, no after production. Just them jamming. This was like a practice session. A jam session, if you will.
