Usually enjoy your analysis, But its really telling when a vocal coach analyses an Artist's voice out of lack of content over a span of six years. Grace Vander Wal's vocal capabilities are outstanding, She uses the vocal fry to suit her story telling and emotional content. And yet can sing with complete clarity upon demand., that puts artists you revere to shame! And let's remember her melodic and compositional skills that are already considered to be in the upper tier in the music industry today. Her compositional skills have been well used under the table so to speak with Artists in country music and the movie industry ( Disney productions ) This video is all hers from lyrics, melodic phrasing, video theme and even production. Thumbs up as always. But ignorance is no excuse. 👍
Thanks KariSma Performing Arts, good reaction. Grace is a different artist who has been carrying out gradual evolutionary work since 2016 with compositions of her own and some covers that I dare say, in my opinion, that the version presented by her is often better than the original. The last songs are great, it's worth remembering that she has been changing the direction of her work but always with a lot of creativity and attitude, her work is beautiful! "Success always"!!!
Thank you for that reaction. I have followed Grace since she was 14. And I always appreciate a thoughtful reaction to her performances. I would suggest that you take a listen to one of the covers that she sings like "Cry Me A River" or "One" or "Vienna". Her vocals can be quite different when she covers someone else's song.
Have you heard of Karen Carpenter? I suppose if you have you'd say she doesn't count because she is dead. Have you heard of Annie Lennox? She is not dead. Cher? Ain't dead. Tony Braxton? Also not dead.
@@ThelSuperlKing It's the story telling and how she changes the emotion of a cover song as if it's her own , when others with good voices cover her originals , they miss the emotional connection.
Breathy and low is a little overdone nowadays, but there are some good examples out there. If you intend to squeeze in another Grace Vanderwaal song eventually, I strongly recommend "Waste My Time" (official video) for a kind of happy antidote to this one. Similarly low register on the verses, but she sings a more melodic chorus that repeats. Also similarly well produced. Her early stuff is good, but it's history and irrelevant as far as assessing vocals for a current singer. I enjoyed this review. Fans will recommend that old stuff, but I wouldn't bother.
quick question How can we tell if a singer is using an autotune system vs raw singing? seems like so many singers today all seem to have the same style of singing & sound. is this just the modern day style ,vs say the singing style of the 70's ? I don't know anyone today sings in the style of Karen Carpenter or something like her. with regards to the singer profiled here she does have a nice sound...
As for Grace, you can always be sure it's her natural voice. She refuses to use autotune. A new producer once autotuned her in a session, and she made him remove it.
It's hard to always hear it for sure... software has become so sophisticated. I usually listen for slight pitch imperfections, the kind that doesn't bother the listener's ears, but normally feels very emotional 😊
@@JohanBesterYourVocalCoach we followed her enough to know she doesn't use autotune. She warned us once that she was working on a song with a new producer for the first time and he didn't know her enough to stay off the autotune button. She tossed that recording and recorded it again. That didn't matter though, since she won't use autotune or produce dance music Columbia stopped releasing her albums 4 years ago. People who aren't familiar with layered vocals often think it's autotune.
I wasn't impressed with your critique. This was more about you in a covert way. And the little you shared of your voice was so off from Grace's vibe. I feel you missed the point.
Critics could make or break an artist’s carrier’s. I’m one of those who criticized her not releasing anything or not going on tour or tours, and was called by her so called cheesy fans anything but Mr nice guy. Years went by, without releasing anything by her, and if I’m correct, almost all fans who were there from the beginning are just left her side. You talking about the point. Please show me or in fact to everyone the point because she can not even choose what profession she want to do in the entertainment industry. As I pointed out many times, “ a handyman is the person who don’t know just one profession, completely, and most the time called as a gadjetering nobody!” As hard it is sound, her talent as a songwriter is kindly call as putting words ( and as many she could ) in a few sentences. Other young songwriters writing meaningful lyrics, and going to perform on stage, and what was she doing in the last seven yrs? Covering old songs, ( some perfectly some with her vibe ) which can be say, that the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, she never really had a vibe, not even when she started her singing carrier. Sorry about the downgrading comment, but she is not smart enough to be in the limelight. Her future is screwed in my eyes when I seen a video about her moving in in with her lesbian friend. Unfortunately her lifestyle fucked her Vibe!
Grace VanderWaal is an artist that constantly evolves. If you compared this song with two songs she releasee a year earlier - Don't Assume What You Don't Know and Repeat, ane compare these songs with her most recent performances of unreleased music, she ha three performances in Brooklyn (clubs) where she tried out unreleased songs, which have a more rock edge to them. If you're interest, her performande and Elsewhere is quite good .... the last four songs of the set are pretty awesome:
The recent club performances were fantastic. Unfortunately, the available videos seem to be from phones, and the sound quality is likely too poor for a good analysis.
I don't think grace is a very happy person. Success is bringing her down. Those songs are about her not being able to mentally handle her rise. I wish her the best.
On the contrary, I'd say she's a very happy person more often than not. She even said as much to her supporters before she released this song because she was worried that they would be worried about her.
