Finally! Someone who truly realizes Mariah's ARTISTIC use of her whistle register. It's definitely what separates her in a whole different level from the bunch that can do the said technique. She never shows off this method but rather infuse it musically in her songs which makes it more appealing and just simply satisfying to listen. With that said, her basically singing in different methods, as what you have mentioned as well, is all about musical approach.
@@ciarrajohnson3849 there's a clip of her in a black dress on stage (can't recall the year) where she jokingly does operatic singing. She sang "I can't hear you" because her monitor wasn't working and she was waiting for the sound people to fix it...so she was playing around on stage.
@@krissy9128 Which has what to do with the period to which I referred (before 12)❓ Nothing! All ANYONE WILL EVER SEE is post-signing, not before. The dress you referred to is probably the “all I had” she mentioned a few times (and might still have). All I’m saying (always said) is she was robbed of footage. I have a camcorder in my house and can’t sing, yet Patricia’s goofy ass never considered one and she’s such a “premier diva”. Many singers can go back in video, but she can’t and that fux me up because she’s a natural artist. Not many of those out here💔💔💔💔💔I love how he puts words to her in his videos and turns her into a musical instrument dissected, though💖💖
@@ciarrajohnson3849 damn smh why so aggressive? Relax! Ik she was robbed of childhood footage but I was just saying we got a little snippet of her from around 2013 doing a lil opera moment in the video "Mariah Carey gets her Diva on, and does some improvised singing in Australia " ....
The best performance in mainstream music. Impossible to replicate, there is no cover with the original arrangement, not even remotely close. Flawless technique
She wrote this song with Carole King. Mariah uses her whistles smartly, they arenot there just to be sung. She uses them as an exaltation like in this song and Visión of Love. She can mimic instruments like a guitar solo in Bringing on the heartache, a Piccolo in Music Box and also uses it as a background, just to give the song a better ambiance like her songs The Wind and her live performance ft John Legend of I'm born again, anger in Don't forget about us. She can also manipulate the texture of her whistles: Piercing: Theres got to be a way, breathy: Never too far, metallic: Bringin on the heartache and You need me, Crystalline: Underneath the stars, melodic: Loverboy etc. Everything she does has a musical or an interpreting purpose on her songs, they are not there to wow, they are they to enrich the production value of her work.
This is a perfect description of how she utilizes her whistle register. Other singers (not shading anyone specific) imo tend to just whistle for the sake of proving they can hit it, whereas Mariah's whistles have so many different textures and it fits perfectly with the song. As Rihanna once said her voice is like an orchestra.
I love Mariah and I agree with you for the most part but Mariah definitely uses a lot of her voice for the sake of using a lot of her voice aka Emotions, All In My Mind, Vanishing
She was performing in front of music legends Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Aretha, Patti MJ prince I’m not exactly sure who’s all there but lots of legends and she showed them she was already a legend 2 years into her career
She's been doing breathy sounds since day 1. Fun fact: She said her demos are full of breathy sound. It was recorded in a 25 dollars machine. And when she was re recording it for the album in sony, the weird thing the machine (cost thousands) unable to produce it. Mariah started singing at 4. One time she even corrected her mother (an opera singer) a right note when doing a rehearsal. That's how keen is her ears. Their house was full of music from classical, to rnb, hiphop, pop, country, rock.. dance tracks.. almost all genre. And all of these influenced her. She also thought that all singers she heard in the radio are all also their works/writings. That triggered to mariah to make/write songs on her own. Fun fact: One of her songs from the demo that included in debut album "Alone In Love" was written in her teens (14yo) Her demos are full of RNB and the management told her she won't do that. Cause RNB that time is not strong compare to genres of whitney/aretha/celine which are more on ballads/gospel/full of belts. She started to talk and became more crazy about hiphop after this 1992 era.
Correct Fun Fact: She sang when she talked, which couldn’t have been 4. She was in PreSchool then and could already DRAW❤️❤️❤️She’s the monster Patti created and tried to destroy (I wonder at what age Mariah was when she realized that)💔💔
Right..whatever she used to record her demo picked up all the breathy vocals and harmonics in her voice. Sony's high tech stuff removed the "Character " to it with the over production.
Mariah is known for her hand movements but, if you pay enough attention to how her hands move as she singing, you can see that they sort of display what her voice is doing. She also uses them to sort of direct herself in a certain way vocal. It's like some sort of language she developed with her own body and if you spend enough time watching her, her hands most of the time hehe certain movements they correlate to certain vocal techniques that she uses.
A lot of singers move their body in a certain way especially their arms and their hands because the voice follows the body. Singing with arm movement can help move the voice easier than if you were just static.
omg i've been waiting for this one. this is literally her greatest vocal performance in her prime. everything about it screams perfection. the looks, the singing, the vibe. it was all classy, elegant and just perfect.
Mariah said before when making songs. Melody comes first and since she's an rnb singer. All the instruments just came end. That's why you cannot easily sing a mariah carey's song if you can't do all of her signature melismas..
Not just the melismas too. She does so many little intricate things that are all super difficult. She's insanely precise and specific with her technique/artistic choices.
Mariah Carey is the Queen of all Singers!!! Songbird Supreme,Queen of Christmas,Queen of whistle note,Queen of Riff and runs/Melisma, Queen of Agility,Queen of low notes and falsetto and etc....
The lambily is converting this gentleman and it seems to go smoothly. I wholeheartedly support this operation. Jk aside. Thank you for another great video! Love the bit about the vocal fry on the higher notes.
She came ready in this performance! Mariah isn’t always confident about her voice but when she is… she easily blows everyone away! And that’s what I like about her, its a rollercoaster ride. She is unpredictable!
Please do these next: - Underneath the start - Tokyo dome - Butterfly - SNL live - If only you knew/Somewhere over the rainbow - Patti Labelle tribute - With you I'm born again - with John Legend
@@ismaelm.mbaangue9147 calm down crusty the clown, she said in her memoir she took that as her chance to perform personally for Aretha. Which Aretha told her it earned her respect.
@@ismaelm.mbaangue9147 I have it to, maybe in the section where she speaks about Aretha or the Grammys?? She also spoke about it on the Spotify interview for QuestLove I think. Chill lol Aretha is Mariah godmother and idol you really think her seeing Aretha at the front row for the first time in isn’t at all going to be a special moment for Her?
Your reaction to the whistle😭🥺. The perfomance is truly stellar, and throughout her discography journey you will get to see how she uses her whistle as an actual instrument rather than something to show off to compliment her music!!(although she has whistled just for fun or laughs ofcourse)!
I’ve listened to this song for years and have often revered it as one of her best vocal performances live & studio. I’m just now realizing she’s saying “NOOWWWW!” in her whistle register!! She has to be 😭 I looked closely at her lip placement and when you mentioned the vowel she used, it would make sense why that note is bright 😭❤️ She’s amazing.
Lawd... Mariah can flat out SANG. Even the greats like Aretha, Patti, and Whitney couldn't deny that. Although she didn't pour her soul into what she sang, her voice is so amazing it didn't matter.
Mariah has got God-given talent and she knows how to use it. She has the voice and she writes the songs and that is why she is the best female vocalist of all time. Thank God for Mariah!
Another fun fact.... for this song: She was supposed to do a cover with her idol carole king. And both ended up putting a master piece song called "if it's over" 🤭🤣

What do you think of her hand movements? Because personally I think that it is a visual guide to whatever she's doing with her voice. Throughout the years it also became her trademark.
Honestly, she is just a masterclass. I don't care what people say about her now. But she has proven to us she is an artist, and I'm really glad she has shown her presence in the music world. Because her influence has really made a huge impact in the music industry as a whole.
that growl at the end is completely insane. Even knowing that I can't do half of what she does here I still try and that growl seems to be "impossible" in my case😂
I love how you explain all these musical voice professional educated notes on how someone sings! I took 4 years of voice and 2 years of piano as electives in college... and I learned all that stuff... but my major was spanish... now years later I don't remember most of what you're saying... even though I know I heard this same stuff from my professor... and there is a familiarity... I still have forgotten most of this!
I don’t understand all the terminologies that you are referring to (because I’m not a musician/singer), but damn your videos are soooo interesting to watch 👏🏼👏🏼
That's what I call the best reaction EVER! and THAT'S A VOCALIST! best of the best! thank you for this video it was so wonderful to watch and hear and learn all these things, I have already always been amazed by her voice and what she can do with it but god damn, your insight just shine a brighter light into her amazing talent! check out her performance in SNL of this same song, it's even better than this one but without the whistle unfortunately but with a lot more raw power, Id love to watch and hear your reaction to it.
Man you would lose your mind watching "The Empress of Whistle Register" Someone talks about how she utilizes all her whistles, which is in tune to what you just noticed.
I would love to see you react to Dionne Warwick's All In Love Is Fair 1975. It may be on the best technical performances I have seen and she is often overlooked when it comes to technique - she was one of the greatest.
I've seen so many vocal coaches on youtube, I have friends that are vocal coaches, but the detail on things that matter that you talk about... Gosh, you're the kind of vocal coach i need! The best!
I truly appreciate your reactions to the song bird supremes songs.I absolutely love her. Her stylistic choices and her buttery tone. I like how you approach your reactions with classical training background.
Your vocal analysis reactiona are just simply amazing. Understanding the artist and their skill. Awesome stuff man. With that being said could you maybe do a reaction of her recent vocals. Would like to see what your take is on her vocals now. Please react to her singing hero/joy to the world at rise up new york. Thank you!
