Vocal Coach/Musician Reacts: DIMASH KUDAIBERGEN Passione New Wave! 

I struggled for several months to form an opinion about this strange piece. Mission accomplished! I've got one now. The 'passion' in this song isn't about romantic love at all. What they've done is to wrench the passion of Christ on the cross - torture and ecstacy - and slam it right into our souls. It's *our* passion he's telling us about. The performance is drenched in Christian symbols, but it's not a religious song after all. It's a celebration of life; we will endure pain and lies, but it's worth it. Igor Krutoy is Jewish. Dimash is Muslim. The song's source material is Christian. But the idea being conveyed transcends sects. It even transcends religion, though the song's insights are obtained from a religious source. This is as cosmopolitan a product as any I've ever seen. The orchestration, the choir, Dimash's performance, are sublime. Dimash's crazy staccato upward run in his second section blew my mind; it's yet another shock to my ears from Dimash. The closing notes sans vibrato are the perfect way to close all of the crazy things we've just heard. This performance is a work of mad genius. Krutoy puts *us* on the cross. And makes us like it. 'Passione' is now at the top of my list of favorites from Dimash and Igor. It's fantastic.

The way I had this song explained to me by an Italian was that it’s about the duality of passion. Basically passion can have a good aspect and a bad one. The passion for our loved ones, the passion for life and other good things is good. The passion that leads to anger, murder, and other bad things is bad. It’s the agony and ecstasy of passion. There’s a lot of representations of duality in this. There’s goodness and innocence represented by the little girl in white. There’s temptation, represented by the choir. Dimash seems to represent man, being in mostly white but some black. The scene behind him seems to start in hell and end in heaven after he’s freed from temptation by the personification of goodness and innocence.

Genius Dimash...

He is something isn't he? There is no other performer in the world like him. He's got the whole package, incredible voice and drop dead gorgeous.

EPIC! OK - you want to know what my impression was -- you asked for it. The choir, organ music, and bells at the beginning give me the impression of a religious experience. The background of what appears to be naked tortured souls struggling to escape flames, is Dante-esque. The lyrics evoke the concurrent struggle of man against good and evil. This is in fact, representative of the crucible of the human experience - the dichotomy of good vs evil in each human life. The child represents the peace that overcomes the chaos. After she sings, you will hear what sounds like tortured souls screeching as they are banished. Then we have that amazing operatic ascension in the vocals as well as the backdrop where you see chaos ascending and angels descending to conquer evil, with the optical illusion that Dimash is being taken up into the heavens, while angels fly down in the clouds, which is appropriate considering his angelic voice. All demons are concurred as he kneels in supplication with angelic beings behind him. There ya go. I have watched this performance many, many times. This is what I have taken away from it. Hope you enjoy my interpretation of the stunning composition and performance.

I don't think 'passion' specifically means love for another person here, so much as life purpose -- what you really care about and how committed you are to it. The lyrics seem to say that caring deeply results in suffering and exaltation, and is the justification for living.

I recommend that you react to his other operatic-style interpretations such as ti amo cossi, Ulisse, question of honor, Tu vas me détruire.

Everything about this performance was so unexpected! Damn, that was very fun to watch! And I love how you give very very useful insights on certain details. Your channel really is a gem!

There were a couple of Italians who reacted to this and said his pronunciation was better than most Italians would pronounce it because they probably take it for granted whereas Dimash focuses on it.

What amazes me about this performance, which I have yet to hear any reviewer mention, is the atonal quality and how he repeatedly grabs the melody out of thin air.

Could you do a reaction to Daybreak from the singer competition from Gloria Wu's channel and the version from Bastau. The singer one gives the story behind the song and also what happened to Dimash the day he was supposed to perform, which is really crazy and then the Bastau where he is in full health.

I hear the creaking as the sound of a swing, like the child is on a swing.. still its scary but the child is oblivious to that, touching Dimash and the singers playfully on her way past. Another thing that is genius I think is how the singers turn their heads to look at her as if they also are surprised. This whole production is so epic and really groundbreaking, never seen or heard before, dramatic and profound and yes life-changing!

The stage, behind to Dimash represents (the Inferno of Dante) the painting by Bartolomeo di Fruosino (1366 or 1369) was an Italian painter and illuminator of the Florentine School and Renaissance art. Bartolomeo was born, and lived and worked his whole life in Florence. (The little girl represents the angel).

Um, like Fellini, it is the treachery of women and the passion that is, falling in love. (La città delle donne - City of women) At least for me, that is what came across. My favorite Dimash performance.

Wonderful analysis. I've watched this video many times and I must say, it is startling. I'm not a big fan of the discordant parts with the breathing and such but if it was the purpose of Krutoy to introduce a touch of chaos into the mix, perhaps it fits. Maybe it is the Russian influence: both Krutoy and the lyricist (Lilia Vinogradova, who also wrote "Ogni Pietra") come from that cultural background and maybe this form is consistent with artistic expression 'round those parts. In any case, it is a song that does make you think; it is rich in images of good versus evil, love and desire, etc. Krutoy and Vinogradova seem to be creating for Dimash a spiritual journey of sorts. The backdrop for much of the performance is an illumination by Bartolomeo Di Fruosino done for Book 1 (The Inferno) of Dante's Divine Comedy. You'll notice at the end that an angelic presence replaces this.
