Dr Dan from Voice Essentials conducts a thorough vocal analysis of Lea Michele's live performance of the song "People" from the musical Funny Girl, originally performed by Barbara Streisand. In the video, he comments on the balance Lea maintains between a light, pure tone and clear diction, hallmarks of classic music theatre that deliver the narrative effectively.
Dr Dan also notes Leah's precise breath control, which she uses to demarcate phrases and thoughts, an intelligent approach that greatly contributes to the overall performance. He also appreciates the occasional pitch imperfections, which, according to him, add a touch of human connection to her delivery. Through the video, he dissects different parts of Lea's performance, pointing out her meticulous vowel shaping, the intentional voice modulations, and the narrative construction, commending her for a beautifully crafted and performed rendition.

⚠️ As a singing voice specialist, I fully acknowledge that each live performance is a snapshot in time and does not encapsulate the entire spectrum of an artist's work, nor can it predict their future evolution. I understand that a myriad of factors, both positive and negative, can influence the delivery of a live performance. I strive to appreciate and critique each live rendition for its own merits, independent of the artist's past or potential future performances. Recognising the ebb and flow of live music, I value its spontaneity, novelty, and individuality and strive to give it the thoughtful consideration it deserves.

She sounded even better live in Funny Girl. Her acting was terrific too, and the NY accent was on point.

Lea Michele was amazing. She made me laugh and cry at the same time. Thank you for every dance step, lights, chords of the orchestra, makeup and above all costumes. Thanks for the amazing stage. Funny Girl in AUGUST WILSON THEATRE forever!

I have news you’re going to love if you want to relive it over and over go on RU-vid go into the search box and type in funny girl full show and you’ll find a bootleg of her doing the entire show. Now when you see it, the title will be girl who falls in love and becomes an actress but once you click on it, it’s her she’s playing Fanny Bryce through the entire thing.

I saw her on funny girl a few months ago and it’s mind blowing how amazing she is, goosebumps the entire time! Loved the analysis. I don’t understand much about the technicality of singing and all but I’ve been learning a lot with your videos😁

You should really give a listen to her Tony's performance of Don't Rain on my Parade. I know the song gets rushed little bit due to time constraints, but it really does showcase a lot of her vocal range & her technique. I was watching some of the behind the scenes recordings of her at the Tony's (from the audience members), and her voice easily reached to the back of the theaters mezzanine area. I've heard so many people praise that she's one of the few performers on bradway who sound exactly like their cast recording night after night, even when she's under the weather. Fingers crossed, I'll be seeing her on September 1 & 2 for her last few Funny Girl shows so i can experience that amazing voice live.

Thank you for reviewing this performance; I enjoyed your commentary. She is amazing! Seeing her in Funny Girl in February, is the best theatre experience I have ever had.

Gleek too. I found the accompliment way too loud. It took so much away from all the singers voices. I kept suspecting they had to work twice as hard as they otherwise would have had just to be heard.

Although I agree that she may have been searching for the note at the 11:58 mark, that “vocal cry” is her (for lack of a better word) trademark. I saw here live in Funny Girl, and she is spectacular.

You asked about whether the spontaneous appluase at 11:43 was pulling at nostalgic hearts strings. Having seen Lea perform live on multiple occasions, she sounds even better live than on recording. It is typical for multiple belts in every song to get loud., spontaneous reaction. Many in her diverse audience who don't know Streisand are cheering also.

I swear she sang better during her theater performances! When I hear her doing tv performances I feel like the is more stressed or rushed so it’s not as good even if it’s still very close to absolute perfection 🤩

She might be slightly under pitched, but it’s so new that you don’t even notice you really don’t and honestly I’d much rather be slightly under pitched than completely off and that’s one thing Leah Michelle is is never completely off pitch. She’s never completely off pitch and also I think some of the choices that she’s making are because think about it when she did this recording she was doing over motion for a funny girl because she was doing eight times a week seven times a week so she had to be very careful, because she had to be very precious with her instrument and I promise you I’m not saying these things to be disrespectful to you sir because I know you’re the professional I’m just telling you what I hear but I’m glad that you do agree that her performance of this is just wonderful I was just wondering could you react to her doing the songs from W. Side St. now they are glee performances, so they will be tuned, but please don’t blame that on her. I’m sure she doesn’t make choices like that but if you could react to them they are tonight, one hand, one heart, and a boy like that/I have a love and no I can’t put links up because I’m really bad at that. I’m truly sorry.

Michelle is the only singer who can fill Streisand's shoes. (Naya if she had lived was also capable of doing so. Would have been neat if Rivera had opened the revival of Funny Girl as Fanny, followed by Lea.)

As much as I love Naya, she would be such a miscast. Fanny Brice should be played by someone Jewish:)

I found her voice overbearing and screechy. Julie Benko was much better IMHO.
