Unlike Western music, an octave has 22 'shrutis (micro-tones)' in Indian music. So they sing or play instruments touching all those shrutis between the notes in an octave. This is melodic music with Western harmony. Indian music uses a lot of micro-tonal embellishments.

Indian music is way evolved than what west gives it credit for, and has been for hundreds - if not thousands of years. Voice tononality is very individual however ability to undulate voice or as you call it freedom is the very basis of classical Indian music which all students of Indian music learn. Traditionally ( based on the best of my understanding )there were only 2 generes our music used to be in 1) carnatic 2) Shastriya and now 2 more have been added fusion and modern. Our music framework gives the ability to the singer and percussionist have the ability and flexibility to apply notes so that the string of melody is not disturbed nor will the ability to sing those notes be dettered if they have mastered the Indian style of singing. All music forms in the Indian subcontinent follow Indian music framework and methodology, contrary to what people may try to say. The instruments used in Indian music are not exactly new and date back thousands of years with Sarodh, Verna, sitar, dhol , tabla, flute and many many more superseding guitar, drums, violin etc by hundreds if not more years. Just giving you a bit of background to our music.

@TheMetalheadextreme 5 лет назад
@@weightloss_healthifi that's true but that particular song Arijit has sung in the most expressive way he has ever done and it's also one of the most difficult ones he has ever done. One of these western guys reacted to the original song and he started crying just by hearing his voice the very first second. I'm not sure if Arijit can ever get a chance to create a song like that again with current mediocrity in Bollywood. That song is a gem in these times of mediocre lyrics and music of Bollywood.

Basically, almost each region in India has a different instrument which is native to that very region with only a handful being staple in almost every region, and that is why in my songs many may not recognize many instruments. Btw, that very first instrument which was being used and was making a unique sound is known as "pepaa" (not sure how to write it in English but it's somewhat correct)
