I've seen them live and it was amazing, the fans are great. Saw then them last year with Breaking Benjamin, Nothing More and Bad Wolves.... it was the best line up I've been to. Everybody was amazing can't wait to see FFDP after the new album is released.

If you haven't done much metal check out Pantera Cemetery Gates and Walk. And some Slipknot. Maybe Snuff and then Psychosocial.

The video sends a better message concerning the subject matter, and was the reason I listened to it more than I might have otherwise; well, that and the intro.

Ive listened to so many bad comments about these guys so hearing your good comments on them has made me cry with joy

One note on being sensible at gigs - I go to a lot of shows, and the best thing is to get a good pair of earplugs. Not the crappy foam ones they sell for 2 bucks at the venue, but good quality reusable ones (you can get a very good pair online for $15 or so). Not only will they preserve your hearing (which you really don't want to lose), but they'll cancel out the noise of the crowd, which has a side effect of making you scream less, because people have a tendency to shout to be heard over the people around them so they can hear themselves. So when you can hear yourself, you tend not to shout/scream. Ever since I started with good quality earplugs several years back, I find I'm not only able to hear these sorts of loud concerts much better, but I go home without any ringing or fuzziness in my ears, and my voice doesn't hurt. Also, agree with some others here that this was a particularly poor example of FFDP live - I've seen them a few times and they are generally better than this. But even so, I thought it was a very fair, even generous reaction.

The other reason people can do themselves a mischief is that when it's really loud and you can't hear yourself, it's hard to tell how much you're pushing your voice - or you want to give that bit extra so that you *can* hear yourself. I know this more from the pub than from gigs!

Yeah, this is not the type of song you listen to if you're analyzing vocal performances. But there are songs by FFDP that would have been a better choice for that sort of reaction.

Seeing it live draws an emotional that's hard to describe

U should really listen to their song "I Apologize ". You can hear the range of Ivan's voice. He really is amazing!

"Pride" from them is also a very good showcase of his voice.

The actual video gives his singing voice more redemption than this live video. If you do 5FDP again, react to “Jekyll and Hyde”.

Been a ffdp fanatic from day one.. love what they stand for.. love who they employ.. I feel every song they put out.. to me this is what music should command. I can't get into iron maiden and it's opera style.. Pantera, lamb of god, Godsmack, Metallica, sepeltura, slipknot.. it's music like that that drives me everyday

He uses a very chest based scream/ growl that he resonates in his mouth. It means you need to lean on the mic pretty hard but it saves your vocal chords. Better in practice than in writting so correct me if i wrote that wrong, but that's how i get those deep growls

I really love FFDP but I’ve always had the belief that vocally, they’re a studio band. Yes, I’ve seen them live and various live videos of their performances. This video solidifies my thought process.

From what I can tell, Ivan Moody (the Vocalist of FFDP) doesn't do a typical "scream" or "growl" technique. He basically does a more extreme version of what many old-school Rock and Metal vocalists were doing in the 70s and 80s to add that tinge of grit to thier voices, where it's essentially a shout. Rather than fixing thier throat and mouth in a shape that creates distorted vibrations naturally (the way most modern heavy vocalists do dirty vocals), the distortion comes more so from the volume and force drawn direct from the chest/abdomen forcing up air. The only other artist I know for sure also uses this technique is Joe Duplantier from Gojira. Perhaps you'll also analyze them, and Joe's vocals? I wish I could recal what this technique is called so you could research it and learn from sombody who knows more than I do lol. Regardless, you should look into it. I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Ticked that like box. It would be interesting to see your take on the FFDP song Lift Me Up because it has Rob Halford from Judas Priest on guest vocals and he comes in like a thunderstorm after Ivan's part. The contrast between styles is staggering when you put them next to each other in the same song, especially in how they both handle the chorus differently.

I'm no vocal coach yet I do know that screaming puts tons of stress on your vocal cords. You can end up losing your voice and/or vocal nodes.

Sream and growling is a aggressive metal, a nu metal staple, i can do it, but it is very tough. Its also evan more tough to do it daily, and u do have to know ur limits and b careful, like u said. 👍👊

Looks like this was the end of their set. I have seen them live and his voice is an absolute standout.

watch the official video for this song, you'll understand the context very fast. someone said the screaming technique was taught to them by an opera singer. the band has sort of become a meme here in the states because of their many gigs for the military. I still like most of their stuff and I've seen smaller audiences make better participation lol

Hello Beth! If you want to try something different, I would suggest the music "We Own The Night" from Dance Gavin Dance (the live perfomance from Vans Warped). The band has two vocalists with very different styles, I think you might like it.

Beth, you must listen to them outside of their live performances from large concerts such as this. They are road worn and exhausted at this point. So the vocals aren't going to be 100%. Please check out something more reclusive they have done like a live session acoustic set or something in a more private setting or just an "official" video, if you will. As always.....you are AMAZING!

Heilung, Van Canto or The Hu. Heilung is Norse/Germanic viking era singing Van Canto is semi acapela rock And The Hu is Mongolian throat singing metal. Please like so she sees this. All three have very interesting vocal techniques.

I've seen them live a few times. This sounds like maybe the end of a few long weeks on tour maybe a few dates too close together. I see that others are recommending Killswitch Engage, End of Heart ache. I really think you would enjoy it.

Mongolian throat singing is one of the best warm ups for fry screaming or growling. I use these techniques myself it helps you to steady your breathing and to strengthen them vocals.

From what I have been told that screaming technic can be damaging if done wrong. But if the person knows how to do it properly then it's not a big deal.

Halestorm, DevilSkin, Pretty Maids (Danish metal/rock band), Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, Magtens Korridorer and The Misfits are just a few I hope you'll get around to checkout.

I've learned the technique of screams. Its kinds a weird way to make the noise. Counter intuitive method of getting a good metal scream.

They look like Celtic warriors except, perhaps, for their clothes. I've some of their other vids, such as their cover of "House of the Rising Sun", which is in actuality an old blues standard done as a cover way back in the early '60s by Eric Burton and The Animals. If you should listen to it, I love the keyboard solo. As for this present review, I respect your courage in tackling music of this sort which greatly legitamize it. Thanks, Beth.

Ivan does have a great voice. I really liked his performance in the musical Devil's Carnival.

After seeing your video on Iron Maiden, I think "Wash it all away" would be a much better choice, especially if you like to hear resonance in a voice. I also suggest the regular video instead of a live video.

If you want a good comparison to this. Listen to Five Finger Death Punch The Bleeding acoustic. It's live. And not to mention. Ivan Moody has had trouble in the past but drinking. So probably at this. Concert he was drunk. So bad. That's why the band has had. Difficulties continuing on and he had a rough life. And sorry for all the periods. I have numb hands, so I have to use speech to text. But it's awesome that you do all genres of music. Cheers

You should really do The Wrong Side of Heaven. That song and video is absolutely GOOD! And they are American. This really wasn't a good video of them to watch. They are a really great live band though.
