I never noticed how unique Filipino song instrumentations really were until I got at ease with a lot of Western songs and finally made comparison with teleserye OSTs. Before that it all felt like I couldn't point it out but I knew there was something different lol
That kind of instrumentation is literally almost every Filipino ballad. And yes, it does sound weird even to me, a Filipino HAHAHHA. Nevertheless, Filipino ballad is beautiful.

that sound you're not used to literally embodies almost all filipino love songs.... Once you start hearing that particular type of instrumentation, with the violins and the smooth beats....you already know that filipino love song is going to be intense and the vocals normally need to be just as intense, if not more. That's why I LOVE filipino love songs....it strikes you a bit harder in your soul than the love songs in the US.
It’s not just modifying the the vowel to [æ]. It’s also controlling the tongue tension. Noticeably different between what she does (tongue is behind the front teeth but low) and what you demonstrate (tongue is on the bottom teeth starting to push forward, which is better IMO, but the tongue is arched). The vowel modification also has some pretty particular formant tuning as well where you lift the soft palate and create space between the back teeth, like if you were to bite into an apple

The transition is not perfect though. I know that whistle and the modal register are disconnected. But there is a pretty huge gap when she did that transition.
OPM (Original Pilipino Music) ballads are made to sound more fairytale-y, grand, dramatic in order to fit what they were originally made for which is dramatic tv shows. It gives this kind of pixie dust effect to make it seem otherworldly (or to kind of transport you to this alternate reality) because the goal is to make you FEEL like you're in the same boat as the character being sung about (which is often an illegitimate child or a wife left for a mistress or a mistreated woman because telenovelas are obsessed with monetizing female struggles). As a Filipino, I hear OPM on TV all the time but there are very few singers I know in mainstream Filipino media that can compete with the international big leagues. One of them would be Morissette (along with the likes of Lea Salonga [broadway icon] and Regine Velasquez-Alcasid [Asia's Songbird]). I wish I could see more of her. A lot of Filipino singers are incredible (I am not one of them) but Morissette is one of those singers you can't get enough of after hearing one song from her.
Gurl we have fiestas and singing contest local and big ones so yea that is the reason, because we as filipino's have very high standard for singers here in the Philippines.
I was surprised he didn't pick up on that insane section where she doesn't seem to take a visible breath between minute 5:09 to 5:24.. I'm still trying to figure out how she pulled that off and I've probably watched this performance million times since Wish uploaded it 😂

It's because her voice is compressed to achieve that belt tone - very little to no air is passing across her vocal cords (Altho she's pushing from the abdom at great velocity). It's called glottal compression and ye it's literally like holding your breath while you sing :)

Oh, and also on Wish bus, Rhett Lawrence has an interview about him taking on producing songs for Morissette with Capital Records, so she will be coming to the states big time. For those who are not familiar with his name, he was the writer/producer who started Mariah Carey and Kelly Clarkson's carriers, among many others.

MrsG87 Filipino songs didn’t grow out of the 90s. Filipino pop songs, rnb and ballads still has those elements until now. I don’t know, maybe Filipino songwriters had a concensus about that background music or something coz that’s always the case.

hoota ragis I don’t under what’s the problem. As a filipino you and I would know that Philippines does have much claim to fame. Yes there’s acouple things here and there, but we are very proud of the talent that we can give. To show that we do have something. Other countries are proud of the things they have, we can be too.
Good reaction video. I love this song. Im only finding about it now years after this was released. She has those power belts and notes that can bring emotional results especially in the bridge section. I never noticed that instrumental distraction you were mention but it must be because im used to hearing Filipino ballads as they use that technique more.
This live performance of her song is way better than the studio recording of the same song she did 4 years ago.A sign of her big improvement for the past couple of years
I think, you need to react in her very own rendition of "Resignation by Lee Young Hyun" (Korean song) which was performed in Asia Song Festival last Oct 2018 in Busan, Korea.

I kind of picked up on the same observation as you coach that Morissette's a bit nervous as well. She may have done it successfully many times over but I think that whenever tasked with a LIVE performance that requires whistle notes (especially on radio broadcast), she can't help but still be a little bit more anxious as compared to tackling a song which doesn't require any. This is so because there's no room for error (nor second takes). She has humbly admitted before that she's no stranger to whistle note fails. That's why I commend her for being one of the few (if not the only one) who's gutsy enough to consistently deliver on whistle note attempts live in public performances. There probably are a good number of vocalists capable of executing whistle notes but few dare do it in situations where the public's perception of their efficiency is on the line.
