Arirang is a song of Korea. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. It embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill. Arirang Alone is a modern song written in the hope of reunification of Korea. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite? Dokdo is in the central location from Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.
@@iamperplexed4695 millions of families were separated during the Korean War. It's been 6 decades since the country was split into two. There's nothing political about families and people of one nation wanting to be reunited.
I Am Perplexed Lmfao no. You must have been fed some propaganda yourself tho if you think that hoping for south and North Korea to reunify is propaganda.
In an interview, she actually said the she turned down huge major deals for international stardom but she declined all of them because she doesn't really want fame and she only wants to sing for and to the Lord.
Admirable to make such decision for her beliefs, good for her. I do think she would become very famous if her music was marketed in the US, but the industry just ruins and commercializes everything most of the time. They focus too much in selling "sexy" instead of the music in talent.
She has a version of "Oh Holy Night". She absolutely kills it bro, you should check it out. By the way she is a Christian Korean artist. Sings only for free and to bless people. She's a cancer survivor too... She has an amazing story yo tell...
@@nicrafaela1185 What is singing ? Is it not vocalization of emotions or expressions in a manner that is pleasing to a wide variety of audience ? If so, then everyone who likes to hear her sing would like to disagree with you on the definition of pleasant and singing.
TJ Aiken wow! I have several Asian friends and I tell them that they never age. They tell me BS. Compared to Caucasians they don’t. My parents didn’t look their age and sadly they died at 62 and 63. I did not been for them getting cancer the same year, & cancer took my 62-year-old dad looking like a 50-year-old man to a 75-year-old man and dead in six months, he would have continued running 6 miles a day. He was an awesome shape but pancreatic cancer is a monster. This woman is beautiful and her voice is angelic.
Many korean and international producers tried to make her sign for commercial stuff but she is not interested in making money with her singing since she is christian and believe that she have to sing for the Lord. In fact she only sung in churches but once she was invited in a show and she could see a woman crying during her performance so she decided to perform more often in shows to share her talent with people to inspire them but not for commercial stuff or making money.
"Mona lisa" of Sohyang, a rock song, I recommend it for you ! And thank you very much for your reaction of my Queen Sohyang !! P.S : She's a gospel singer in South Korea ! 😉
That would be indeed so amazing. It's a shame some of both singers' fandoms are fake vocal experts who attack each other though. They should know that the both are amazing talents and have legit techniques.
John Roh yeah. People need to realize that their techniques are so advanced that best singers in the world would struggle to sing some of their most difficult songs. The hardest dimash song I have covered was his rendition of “All By Myself” by Celine Dion and I had no problem learning that within a couple of weeks. But if you asked me to sing diva dance, then thank u next.
She won the Immortal Song 2 competition with this song, with Michael Bolton in attendance. Apparently, she was given some award for this song in Canada (I vaguely remember someone writing about this). After the competition, Michael Bolton was so impressed by her that he invited her to join him in his Korean concert tour. I know they sang The Prayer together.
Try "Everyone" next. It's in Korean. It's her vocal masterpiece. Even she said that it is her hardest to sing so far. There's a version with English subtitles in Vimeo.
OMG! I was satisfied with you doing Bridge Over Troubled Water, but you added Arirang Alone to the video too? Awesome! I forgive you for being nitpicky about forward singing( I love it!) , lol. As long as you give her props, it may not be your preferred way, but it works!

Many thanks for the reaction boss. Sohyang is a 40yo gospel/CCM singer from Korea. She has been doing this for more than 20 years, and is also an incredible person with a heartfelt personal story and motivation to sing. Here are two more for you from the same show, I think you are going to love them:. "Lean on me" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GvsgCllcNPE.html Michael Bolton was a guest on this episode, and the singers invited did covers of some of his songs/performances. Sohyang chose a fresh take on a song that Michael had extensively covered in the past. And it was epic. "Raise me up" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-te_L9ofhUt8.html Shane from Westlife was a guest on this episode. Beautiful re-arrangement (the theme of the show is to invite notable Korean artists, make them re-arrange with their teams well known songs and then sing them live on stage) and execution. Keep the goodness coming, cheers..C:
Thanks for this. Its introduced me to another amazing singer that sent shivers up my spine. I laughed at the first amazing note she reached as I was thinking about how it's the angelic inhuman quality of voices like this that make it so powerful....then you just casually, sat in a chair, throw out the same notes. Amazing.
A lot of "Stanish" people have Asian DNA, which would explain why Dimash looks like a BTS member. The pronunciation of Korean words may explain why her oral formation of certain verbs are altered. She's a cervical cancer survivor & devoted Christian, which may lend to her "church" sound. My Korean family have been devoted Catholics since the 1500's. Go figure.
I would be very curious to know what you think of Song Sohee, the most naturally gifted singer from Korea imo. She is singing in a traditional "Gugak" style, very unusual but yet unbelievable.
Appreciate your comments on promoting those lesser known singers who can bring joy to many more people around the world in this global village. Agree also with your observation that music from all corners of the world is coming together. Music is a language for which words are optional. The melody and rhythm have their own stories to tell without the language barrier. World class talents can be appreciated no matter what language they speak. Thanks for spending some time with Sohyang.
Arirang is a traditional Korean folk song that all of us Koreans know. It is believed that "Arirang" originated in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province. According to a legend, the name is derived from the story of a bachelor and a maiden who fell in love while picking camellia blossoms near the wharf at Auraji (아우라지). There are two versions of this story. In the first one, the bachelor cannot cross the Auraji to meet the maiden because the water is too high so they sing a song to express their sorrow. In the second version, the bachelor attempts to cross the Auraji and drowns, singing the sorrowful song as he dies. During the Japanese occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945, "Arirang" became a resistance anthem against Imperial Japanese rule. Korean protesters sang "Arirang" during the March 1 Movement, a Korean demonstration against Japan in 1919. Many of the variations of "Arirang" that were written during the occupation contain themes of injustice, the plight of laborers, and guerrilla warfare. In modern times, it's a song about uniting with our brothers and sisters up north and is an emotionally packed song that many Koreans hold dear. This was probably the best version of Arirang I have ever heard sung and when this aired, I know it moved many Koreans to tears. I can't underline the sheer emotional strength this song has on us in South Korea.
In Korean culture they are perfectionist when it comes to their professional lives. They are very competitive. Also I'm finding out many Korean artists can speak more than one language.
So Hyang is one of the best female singers alive and I'm really happy that you reacted to her video and I would recommend her arirang alone performance she just slayed it.just killer... KILLER
When someone asked So Hyang how she learned to sing such high notes--and so smoothly--she said she listened to a Disney movie when she was a kid hundreds of times and just imitated it. She didn't know that she "wasn't supposed to be able to do that" so she just did it anyway and thought little of it. (That's how she learned English, too!) Oh man! What a God given genius talent she is! No one touches me with her singing more than So Hyang, and I'm a 61 year old guy that is far more into the blues and blues-driven rock and roll! She also teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and refuses to sign any recording contracts with the international corporations. She is convinced it will destroy her spiritually, since she is a Christian, and quotes Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." The excesses of the entertainment industry are repulsive to her, and after seeing the kind of people big "stars" turn into, I can't mount any kind of rational argument against her! She just wants to sing to raise money for charities, churches and missionary work. She took a lesson from Seth Riggs one time and says she learned virtually everything else on her own. Where do such people come from? Moreover, she also has persistent problems from hepatitis B (from a blood transfusion when she had cancer surgery when she was 20) and is very prone to pneumonia. You can imagine how she feels with this coronavirus pneumonia pandemic all over the world and in South Korea! She has asked for her fans to pray for her protection from any more bouts of pneumonia, thus it is a very serious concern for her. She sang her "You Raise Me Up" performance for Shane Filan while still suffering from pneumonia. What can anyone say? She is a literal Wonder Woman! Here is an English language interview she did for a Seoul FM radio station that explains a lot of what she is about. I KNOW you will enjoy it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N2u_pmoWxj8.html

I can't really say that I've ever heard anyone who can sing like that and not fade out as she goes up. Sohyang says that it even makes her own head hurt when she does that because it will resonate so much. She is just flat out absolutely amazing. Period. 🤔😲💘😏

Her best skill is Whistle Voice as good as Mariah. 3. Arirang is traditional korean song and there are various version. Nat king cole liked Arirang also he sang a song. 5. She performed "Lean on Me" in front of Michael Bolton and she was invited his world tour. 6. She is first Korean singer who perform in NBA. Chris Paul said "it was the best National Anthem ever." 7. I think that is exactly what So Hyang and Dimash are doing, combining the best techniques from opera and pop styles into one magnific music. Gotta love them for that. Thanks
She is one devout Christian.... Sometimes she closes her eyes right before performing.... She actually prays to the Holy Spirit for a perfect performance... She has a great story to tell...
Kim So-hyang (born April 5, 1978), credited as Sohyang, is a South Korean singer. She made debut in 1996 with the song "MR", which was released on Naver Music. Despite having a long career in South Korea, she was only able to make her international breakthrough in 2014, when she became the first Korean artist to sing the American national anthem at a NBA game. Sohyang also achieved fame when she sang with Michael Bolton & Kirk Franklin. Her has participated many times on television music competition programs Immortal Songs 2 and I Am a Singer, and the last King of Masked Singer (2017) winning twice on Immortal Songs 2 with songs "Lean on Me" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and You raise me Up 2018. Disney's making contract with her in movie Moana, Sohyang voiced the protagonist in the Korean-dubbed version, for the singing parts (How far I'll go). Sohyang's voice type is a Lyric Soprano, specifically a Full Lyric Soprano. Her vocal range spans from D3 to A6, a total of 3 octaves, 3 notes, and a semitone. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals with characteristics being a homogeneous, rounded, and bright instrument of remarkable beauty and meticulous control. This skill has been very much well showcased all throughout her career.
Thank You Vey Much For Reacting Queen Sohyang, One of The best Vocalist in this planet. I Suggest You Sir To React to Another Sohyang perf. You Raise Me Up, Lean On Me and I have Nothing, Ill promise you sir ITS epic!
I understand what you're saying but numerous people have tried to sign & promote her but she doesn't sing to be famous, she just wants her music to help people in hardship feel better. If you know about her background you may understand
Hi, Ken Tamplin, I'm so glad you reacted to So Hyang ! What the beautiful and amazing performances that were born with her unique voice and incredible singing ability !!! Thanks for your truly nice reaction ! From the U.S.
You're here again lol. Man you really are an example of confirmation bias. If Ken thinks Dimash's techniques are great and he confirms Sohyang's great, you should take that objectively, not selectively. Being a fan boy is okay but just don't put a great singer down. I love both of them and they are both great technicians. Why can't you just accept that?
Sohyang is spectacular singer but she never promote her self to be a famous. She doesnt have a social media to promote her self like another singer. She just want sing to comfort people. Amazing from sohyang. Sohyang fans from Indonesia
She doesn't wanna be a Rock Star. She just wanna sing to make people happy and surely she is using her talent in that way. That mindset of her is all shown by her attitudes and that's what makes 소향 so great and exceptional...^^
It's great to see you appreciate songs with an international flavor, Ken. A great singer is a great singer in any culture or language, and it's pretty heartwarming to see a true voice expert like you recognizes it.
🧛♀️❤️🎸🎬💙💙💙💙💙 💙💙💙💙💙 💙💙💙💙💙Just rewatched this reaction and noticed a comment by you that slipped past me previously ... Its true So Hyang doesn't need these competitions like this ... I am a singer or Immortal songs but keep in mind first it is not amateurs she competes with it is other establ shed singers in Koreas music industry many with insanely large fan bases as their agencies spend enormous amounts promoting them ... So Hyang being who she is even though she began 20 years ago has chosen not to sign with and agency or management company she is just a humble gospel singer .... and yet she manages to wipe out the competition nearly every time ... If it were not for these shows most of us international fans and many Korean fans would never have known who she is or have heard her amazing gift. Her popularity internationally is amazing mostly due in part to reaction videos like your own ... Just search RU-vid alone and you will find hundreds even thousands of reaction videos worldwide ... most have 20k and above views of unsuspecting people being left in shock and awe of the worlds best vocalist and becoming instant fans. So though she does not need these competitions I am forever greatful she does not avoid them ... To put it into a metaphor ... because she lost the ability to have children with her cancer the people of the world have become her children whom she comforts each time she sings us her lullaby's..♥🧛♀️❤️🎸🎬💙💙💙💙💙 💙💙💙💙💙 💙💙💙💙💙
Wow, one of the most beautiful pieces written about Sohyang and it is so true. Just to add a note: She was scouted numerous times by big agencies from States (I heard Michael Jackson being mentioned in one interview) and Korea and she rejected them all. She is a devout Christian and she prays to God for guidance. She said that signing with an agency gets her all the recognition and fame, and who won't want that. She is human and she was tempted of course. After praying to God, she decides that it is easy for her to leave the path that God has set for her if she steps into the entertainment world. So, she rejected them all. Till today, she does not have any social media link to her. No Facebook, no personal website, no Instagram and not even an email address that we can contact her with. She is just that low key. An amazing person sent from God above.
@@kentamplin yes they are! Both of them give me motivation to continue practicing singing even if I'll never get to that level. It's just something I love. People often marvel at her vocal range - but I think her greatest skill is her amazing legato which displays in many songs, especially 'Home'. yes, she began and still is a gospel singer in church, visiting the US sometimes. She had a concert in LA early this year I think. She does get around to other countries, but outside the main West pop culture. I think her most emotionally gripping performance was her epic 'everyone'. Its 7 minutes, but every second worth it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H5e7MPre7iY.html
I love your reactions because you can actually sing well and you have unique insight into the techniques, and you are super respectful. Thanks man! EDIT: I agree with appreciating music from all over, actually most of my favorite songs now are in languages I don't speak, just hearing the song you can feel the emotion behind it and that's all you really need, its fantastic.
Much respect to Miss So Hyang! 👏 Her vocal prowess, technic and control allows for that mix to go in to the stratosphere, it's possibly the highest I've ever heard (aside from Dimash). Her head voice is heavenly and she emotes beautifully, her technic is class A! Her belts remind me of Celine Dion, who in my opinion is the belting queen, the power behind them is immense. 🤯 For me vocal discernment plays a big part, she knows her voice and what and where she can go with it. This is why vocal lessons are so important in my opinion, some things are God given and some things can be taught. Quite frankly if I'm being honest, I hear vocal careers imploding worldwide mine included! 🤦♀️ By the way you're a vocal coach, critiquing is part of the job because that's the only way any one can learn and some of us are hear to learn from your opinions, as long as the respect is there and it is, critique away my friend!
I really appreciate your reaction towards this. Like its genuinely constructive critism, even if she did a very good job but a little critism can bring her so much forward and much higher so critism isn't always that bad. i also agree that vocalist like this or TNT and dimash should get the appreciation they deserved, they should be known worldwide :D
As breathtaking a performance as this was, and as deserving of international acclaim So Hyang has shown herself to be, it's ALSO worth acknowledging how greatly Ken has informed and heightened my appreciation for her talent. His generosity of spirit seems to shield him (AND us) from that all-too-human failing shadowing all critics - using expertise to elevate themselves by demeaning a celebrated talent. Bravo, Ken.
Few DIMASH songs you must react with insane vocal techniques... 1. Adagio 2. Mademoiselle Hyde 3. Love of tired swans 4. Daybreak at batsau concert 5. All by myself
I feel like to really appreciate this song you have to understand why Arirang is such an important song in Korean culture. I would highly suggest listening to Song So Hee sing Arirang from various regions in the traditional fashion.
Her vocal coach was Michael Jackson's vocal coach and she sings Christian Contemporary music she has a duet with Kirk Franklin here in the US and with Michael Bolton... She doesn't sing regular music only in shows and OSTs for dramas, she does mostly Christian music... You want emotion check her rendition of Breath and home in masked singer, she is amazing... She teaches music at a university in Korea.
Not exactly true. She only had 5 vocal lessons with Seth Riggs. As for university, she occasionally gives "lectures" to the university there. I don't think she is related to any university though.
@@ignatiuschua5268 She said it on Masked singer, you always follow me every where or you follow her and feel like fighting with me?? so saying she had five lessons with him and saying he was her vocal coach are not the same thing??? where is the lie now???
Female opera singers sing in Head Voice, and they rarely belt, while SoHyang sings that Bb5 in mixed voice, added with twang. That explains her very bright and forward placement rather than opera singer’s backward and upward placement or pharyngeal placement. A pop singer who uses that placement is Lara Fabian, please react to her next!
@@kentamplin lara fabian lowers her larynx and has voce ingolata. easy to pick it up, the fake dark sound.. hoofy, hollow sound! swallowed tongue.. lack of clarity on her notes and all that distortion. With Sohyang, most people gets chills and goosebumps when she sings a cover song that is rearranged to suit her vocal range. Yes, 90% of the time you will be shook. You don't see female vocalists doing what she does because it is not just a note but half or three quarter of the song full of power belting and high notes. Easy for us to sing just a note to match, but extremely difficult to perform on stage in front of live audience powering through flawlessly.
Awesome reactions Ken! I hope you could also react to her masked performances beginning with Dear Love as these are on a different level. Looking forward!
My all time favourite Dear Love. About a woman whose husband abandoned her for a younger neighbour, and how she pines for her despite his cheating on her. The song was written for a drama. The song is sung with lots of pain and wailing, one waves after another with increasing intensity. It is so beautiful yet painful. I teared every single time I listen to Sohyang sings this song.
She's at the top of her game and is already world famous. NOT just in Korea. She lectures music at universities and has trained in the art for 20+ years so she's no amateur. She also suffered from cervical cancer in her early 20s which left her infertile. But her Christian faith helped her power through and beat the cancer. Just thought it best if you a little about her background.
You should react to So Hyang sing " I have nothing" she totally tore up Whitney's song and then some. She is THE BOSS, pitch, note length, range, dynamic's, breathe controll, emotions this lady can do it all.
