Vocal Coach Reaction To Styx - Blue Collar Man - Ken Tamplin
Leaving it all on the field.
Consummate musicians, Styx embraces this philosophy with every single song. Every. Single. Song. In this performance the band takes no prisoners in an all-out, John Rambo-esque, assault of blistering musicianship coupled with sublime vocals and unparalleled songwriting in a pure, balls to the wall, performance. Guys, this is "Rockstar Great". This is perfectly executed professionalism; the type that I hope inspires each of us to "leave it all on the field" in every aspect of life.
Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) is the first single that Styx released from the Pieces of Eight album in 1978. Lore has it that the song was composed by Tommy Shaw after hearing the sound of his boat engine failing to start. He said it sounded like a good riff to a song. The song reached No. 21 in the United States.
Music is life.

Hey Ken, love your enthusiasm with Styx. I'm from Chicago and they are local hometown guy's. Dennis is the ultimate showman who really enjoys his fans. Im glad you feel they are a killer band too. They have been performing together and apart for like 40 years?!'Crazy amount of time. Yes, they have and still had issues with each other but the music remains timeless and the performance s are a 10.

Thanks!!! I missed the video. One of my favorite bands since 12yrs old (I’m a young 50yr old now lol) “paradise theater” (styx) and “Escape” (journey) “On the radio” (Fonna Summer) and “Hi Infidelity” (REO) my very first 4 Lps. GREAT BANDS!! My dad and Step-Dad both were and still very established musicians and when I was 12-14 my step-dad told me ya can’t look down at your guitar and you MUST sing (at least backup) or you’ll get passed up or another guitar player that can. Great advice... I’ve always stayed true to that and even later became a lead song as well even acoustic solo acts (more money). Sorry for the long story. Thanks again!! Ya Rock Ken!!👍🏼

They were an incredible band hands down!!! I remember my Styx’s 4x4 poster that was on my bedroom wall. Shaw/Blades was another moment when really great musicians just made some amazing songs that still stand up today!!! I feel so blessed to have been alive when all of these bands were playing on the radio and rocking all the arenas. My son is 16 and I almost feel sorry for him because he would be hard pressed to find bands today that have all the elements of groups I grew up listening too. True musicians, singers, song writers, that can bring it night after night and with energy that melts you!! Riffs that still to this day are recognized and so iconic. John Bonham “when the levee breaks”, Ted Nugent “Strangle Hold” Motley Crue “Kickstart my Heart”. Just stuff that will never get old and will never happen again. Love your taste in tunes. Keep going please!! Loving it!!!

Tommy Shaw is currently 66 years young.. that’s 4 years ahead of me, and my goal (with KTVA’s help) is to demonstrate that kind of stage presence. Can we do it?? You bet we can! Rock On! :-) Thanks, once again, for a top-notch reaction video.

Tommy Shaw is a southern songbird. I've seen Styx at least 20 times. I use to say that he was my future husband, he just didn't know it yet lol. And JY is the nicest guy to fans. Somehow I always managed to get front row. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 oh adding an edit..... I'd love to see you critique their song "Crystal Ball". That song meant alot to me. I helped me through a really hard time in my life, and I still think it's their best song. Oh and I have this concert on dvd. It's one of my favorites.
@Deborahtunes
@Deborahtunes 5 лет назад
20 times, I'm so jealous...😏 JY gets a bad rap from certain people. But I've heard so many stories about how good he is to his fans. JY once said that because his sister became a paraplegic as a teenager, he learned to appreciate everything he has, and can do. Because she is unable to... JY really is more humble than many believe...

To this day the best concert I've ever been to in my life. For me, Styx is Dennis DeYoung and Dennis DeYoung is Styx. So I wouldn't go see the current band. When I saw them in 1997 it was the Grand Illusion tour the one with the theatrev and the guy sweeping and it was just absolutely amazing. I've seen The Who Van Halen and tons and tons of other rock group Steve Miller Lynyrd Skynyrd Etc and styx still the best.

First rock concert I saw. 1977 Grand Illusion tour. 2 1/2 hours with TWO encores; and the encores were like 3 songs each. It was like the best concert I ever went to. I’ve seen them at least 12 times since. Each and every time they throw down. Good to see that you truly get their goodness. Man in the Wilderness is my favorite Tommy song. They started adding it to their show in the last 5 years or so. The fans appreciated it too.

I would be very interested to have to do a reaction to the Styx Since 1999 when Canadian Keyboardist and Singer Lawrence Gowan took over for Dennis DeYoung. I personally like both Dennis and Lawrence as singers , Songwriters and keyboard players. Lawrence Gowan made a huge name for himself in Canada with his solo career before his entrance into STYX
@jenniferwright9606
@jenniferwright9606 3 года назад
Have seen Lawrence Gowan w Styx about 3 times - unfortunately I find him beyond annoying. Way too overdone, he sort of reminds me of watching a High School air guitar contest. But I put up w him bc Tommy & JY are still so awesome. I was lucky enough to see Styx with all the original members. THIS is how it should be. Wish they would put their differences aside and do one more tour together.

Can't believe I found a Styx fan my age! PLEASE, PLEASE do QUEEN OF SPADES on the PIECES OF EIGHT ALBUM. It's basically the last really rockin tune that DDY did. They are now doing it in thier live shows, and Gowan does a respectful job on the lead vocal. Oh, and don't forget, FOUR TRIPLE PLATINUM ALBUMS IN A ROW, never done before, and never done again! And if you want to hear some more of thier badass riffs, check out, SUITE MADAM BLUE, MAN IN THE WILDERNESS, AND SNOWBLIND. Most are on the concert video your watching now, the RETURN TO PARADISE ALBUM.

When I was in fifth or sixth grade, my dad showed me “Mr. Roboto.” I fell in love with the song and listened to it all the time (I actually choreographed a dance to it and performed it a concerning amount of times). Last September I got to see Styx live... my very first concert! At that time, Styx wasn’t a favorite band of mine. I only knew “Mr. Roboto,” “Renegade,” and other popular hits from my dad and the Greatest Hits CD I had purchased a couple weeks prior. After the concert, I was BEYOND amazed. I started listening to more of their content after and they became a close second to Journey. They are an incredible band, and I am so glad that I can appreciate that now. I think about that concert almost every day. I am pretty sure I cried. Surreal. The way I felt when the band walked on stage was something I had never felt in my entire life. I hope the upcoming Journey concert makes me feel the same way!

Styx have got to be one of my all-time favorite bands ever! The line-up DeYoung, Shaw, Young, and the Panozzo brothers was the best! Their albums running from Equinox through to Kilroy Was Here have stood the test of time as some of the best music from the late 70s and early 80s. I can plop on their music and drop into fantastic mood. And, personally, I think that Come Sail Away is one of their greatest songs ever. I'm 50 and have been a guitar player, bassist, and subpar singer since I was a kid. Lately I've found myself looking back at all great bands who were organic and played their asses off like this. I've also found myself gravitating to home recording "artists" and finding that organic vibe again. The cream will rise. I think another great era of real music is brewing as we speak.

One of the classic rock era's most amazing singers; a vocal powerhouse. He still sounds the same, in his late 60s. Not sure how singers manage that, but he's done it.

I have a fondness for Styx going way back. Most of the music they are best known for is excellent, but I tend to like their harder stuff over the ballads. I also have a great Styx related story involving one of my early years band mates (Steve Schuffert) who would go on to have a remarkable career (playing guitar, singing, recording, touring, publishing deal...). In the late 80's he was part of a regional "supergroup" out of NE Ohio/NW PA called The Urge, which in it's earliest incarnation included one Trent NIN Reznor. All 4 in the band were staggeringly talented, fun, good looking, and full of swagger. The front line guitarists (2 guitar, bass) could all sing strong lead and harmony, and the two guitarists were excellent lead guitarists as well. Any three of the guitarists could also play keyboards. With zero flaws, their sound was sizzling, a cross between Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Georgia Satellites, and Brian Adams. They were crushing all the local clubs and bars while working up music of their own with plans to land a record deal. Then came James Young from Styx who wanted to form his own band while Styx was on hiatus. The Urge guitarist (not Steve) often did guitar tech work for Styx whenever they were touring the midwest region, so they all knew each other. Well, James offered that Urge guitarist a spot in his new band, and he went for it, breaking up The Urge for good. Steve can still get worked up about Styx to this day.

@@kentamplin I grew up near Chicago in the 70’s & early 80’s and have always loved them. Saw the original members together in the 80’s. They were beyond phenomenal . . . and I had an adrenaline rush going for about 3 days after the concert. =) I hate that I have to go see DDY and Tommy / JY separately now. Really wish they would put their differences aside and get together for another tour.
