⚡ 💕 / ☀ This was from June 2018, so the backup dancers situation was complicated. Original member Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) had last been on stage with the group in October 2017. She officially left the group in October of 2018, for undisclosed health reasons. To fill for her in the meantime, BABYMETAL tried a few different combinations of backup dancers. In 2019 they introduced the "avengers", three young woman who rotated as dancers in Yui's old spot. One of the avengers, Momoko Okazaki, became a BABYMETAL member in 2023, was given a head-set mic, and officially named "Momometal". Original members Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) are still with the group.

Can you believe singing "can't stop the power" and then suddenly the power it just stop? 😮 Well that's exactly what happened last month when BM returned to Download Festival after 6 years and unfortunately they couldn't stop the power and force of nature.😢 You gotta see SuMetal's death stare when that happened, oh my Fox God she was really pissed. They resume the setlist after a moment when there was no danger for them to play but unfortunately the setlist was cut to only 5 songs being RATATATA the last song, of course the girls were really sad and they even apologized in the social media. Great reaction. You already have all the explanations about Yui not touring in 2018 and eventually leaving a couple of months after this because of her ongoing poor health. Just to confirm the two dancers (affectionately nicknamed Muscle Metal by the fans) did not have mics and were not singing, so yes it is highly likely that Moa's backing vocals were, at the very least, supported by the backing track which also had the growly scream vocals (those were anonymous at this time, later for the album version those were provided by guest vocalist Alyssa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy). Su-metal plays the part in all their songs - her serious face is appropriate for this song, it is not a happy, fun song ... there is absolutely no disconnect with the audience. Connecting with the audience is a huge part of what BABYMETAL are all about. A couple of songs that really show off different aspects of Su-metal's vocals and her versatility that you can really analyse would be 'From Dusk Till Dawn' live at Budokan 2021 and 'Monochrome' live at PIA Arena April 2023.

The backing scream was a tape track where they had metal vocalist Alissa White-Gluz on the studio version of the song (she is credited as a featured artist on Distortion, but I don't think has ever performed live with Babymetal). I think this was Download 2018 and Su-Metal said at times she was focusing on a ferris wheel to the side of the crowd because she wasn't totally comfortable with how they were performing for reasons others have already mentioned.

As a vocal coach, "From Dusk Till Dawn" is worth explaining! I have been working on this song for a few years now, and I am very excited about it. It is very difficult to sing in falsetto for half of the song, and some of it is very high pitched. SU-METAL is great at singing live on any stage. If you respect the song and lyrics as a musician, if you pause the song, please rewind it a bit before playing.

2018 was a tough moment for them with Yui being unable to perform due to a health issue. So, they tried this in-line duo formation with two backup dancers on the sides. They tried several other formations and nothing worked until they went on tour in December 2018 with Saya Hirai covering Yui's old position and restoring the classic triangle formation. Then, in 2019 they implemented the Avengers system to cover that same position. And it was like this until one of the avengers, Momoko Okazaki became an official member in April 2023. As you mentioned, some of the backing vocals are on tracks and I don't think anyone is going to fight you because of that. Also some of the main vocals are tracked or doubled in order to let Su-metal harmonize with herself. We have discussed this for years and I believe it's not a problem to mention it. And yes, Su's piercing voice is well known for its powerful nature. Its like a sonic "laser". 😁 🤘🦊

Traditionally, Asian singers were trained to have a bright, nasal, metallic forward-placed voice (sorry if some of those terms are repetitive, my wife is the vocal expert, not me) that was meant to cut through the traditional instruments.

To put on such a show is a testament to their dedication. 2018 was a bit of an 'annus horibles' for Babymetal. Yui wasn't with them for health reasons and the Kami Band guitarist, Mikio, had died in January after a fall from a viewing platform whilst star gazing. The two dancers to the side (named Muscle Metal by fans) were a temporary addition. It settled down in 2019 when one of three dancers filled the third spot and even more in 2023 when the last remaining of those dancers was given a mic' and officially named Momometal.

I allways enjoy your very thorough, thoughtful breakedowns. You mentioned Su's demeanor at the outset. I can't know what was in her head at the time but I will say that 2018 may have been the darkest year ever for Babymetal. Yui their beloved third member had left the group-undisclosed medical reasons. And Mikio Fujioka one of the OG Kami band guitarists had recently passed away in a tragic falling accident. For me personally I've always thought that I see some of that pain in Su's face during this performance.

Nice, welcome back to Babymetal! Su’s expressions are always a bit more serious on this song. The harsh vocals are tracked, and from Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy. This was 2018, Yui stopped performing due to health, and later left in Oct 2018. In the mean time, Babymetal had 2, then 5 additional backup dancers with Su & Moa. Great suggestion for you: *Light and Darkness* - Be sure to do the “Pia Arena MM” live version (Not Offivial MV, as it’s live video + studio audio). It’s a very vocally focused song, and I believe Su said this song was more on the challenging side for her. 🤘🦊

Su's crowd control is legendary, but here she wasn't using her full power... she actually had to tell the crowd she wanted a big circle.... Fast forward a few years to the Metal Galaxy concert, all she did was twirl her finger, and pits were opening up all over the arena....😁😁😁😁🤘🦊🤘

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 BABYMETAL's "Dark Side" era in 2018 may be regarded as chrysalis. The battle-suit like costume was one of the symbols of the era. And the rite of passage, which enabled Su / Moa to transform from cute girls to grownup ladies, accompanied by brave squires (dark Kami Band and muscle sisters) gave a significant depth to BABYMETAL's epic story. When the era ended in 2019, they came back in a form of beautiful butterflies that are not cute little girls any longer but grown-up ladies after going through tough experiences. Su-Metal showed up as a queen with dignity and inviting elegance. Moametal as an archangel with captivating force.

You are right, the backing vocals are usually supported by a backing track. I think it varies, though, sometimes there‘s only the live sound, but sometimes it seems like they are 100% backing track. I‘m not 100% certain, though. This performance was in 2018, just after one of the original three members (Yui) had left. They experimented with different formations for a while, like 4 or 7, then continued as a duo, until they finally returned to the trio formation with one of three backup dancers taking the third spot for each show, one of which has now become a permanent third member. At last.

This is one of their songs where Su has her game face on, you'll see it during this song at other concerts as well. When Su puts on that look it's almost frighting, check out "Headbanger Live at Makuhari 2023" and watch her make the whole crowd get on their knees and bow to her with out saying a word, just the stare. Of course Babymetal and especially Su are very theatrical so when song calls for that more serious look she delivers.

Soooo right around this time they lost one of their "scream (aka cheer) and dance" members due to health issues. This tour was weird because management didn't address her absence and people assumed she like had the flu or something and would be back. But eventually it was announced that she (Yui) would not be returning which resulted in some chaos in the fanbase. This stage arrangement was one of the attempts to adapt, with the remaining "scream and dance" member (Moa) being behind the singer (Su) with two nameless dancers on either side. This didn't get much positive feedback and eventually they dropped it and went to a group of three unnamed dancers ("The Avengers") to alternate filling in where Yui used to be for the choreo but without mics. This era is likely when they went to playback for the backup vocals, with only Moa "mic'd" it was likely too hard to keep up that super high energy choreo and keep the backup vocals perfect. In the previous era with both Moa and Yui in their concert footage you can definitely tell they were using live vocals because you could hear their mistakes, like one getting lost in the callouts they do or hear them speaking to the crowd. I'm sure they've kept with using track (of them, just prerecorded) because they value precision in the dance aspect over live vocals but it's still kind of a bummer to not get them live vocals but I'm hoping with the addition of Momo (a former Avenger) that they consider transitioning back to live vocals for Moa and Momo.

This concert is from a weird time during Babymetal's career. Yui, the third member, had withdrawn from performing due to an undisclosed health issue, but had not yet quit the band, which she would do later in the fall of 2018. So the summer of 2018 Babymetal experimented with different configurations of backup dancers, they would not get back to 3 on stage until Yui did indeed quit, as they didn't want to send the message they were replacing her while she battled a health issue. So there is Su-metal, Moametal, and two additional dancers. Only Moa was mic'ed up as backup, so yes tracks for a fuller sound. And to be honest, sometimes Moa is tracked and sometimes not, I have seen Babymetal perform on consecutive nights and one Moa had live vocals, and one she didn't. The screaming is a backtrack, performed by Alyssa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy, who is a brilliant singer in her own right, both screams and clean. But in general, Su is live, Moa and now Momo may or not be. Which is okay; how can you have breath to sing and dance as hard as they do?

Not one of my fav. performances of this but they were in a pretty awkeward situation at the time - and it doens' t really feel representative of them to me - although I really admire their tenacity in carrying on as a pair, and it for me at least let Moa shine with some solo Black BM performances. Good reaction - I like distortion but tend to avoid this one as it makes me feel a little sad 😂😂

While I have no issues with this particular period in Babymetal's career, I think it's fairly safe to say that it's not very representative. And similarly, there is nothing wrong with the song Distortion, but I don't think it's in the 20 top for many Babymetal fans. Maybe not even the top 50 🙂. To get a sense of what they are like as a group, I think you should try to go even further back. Never think -- ever -- that these performers are disconnected from their audience. Audience connection is job one for these artists (as clearly on display later in the song). Sumetal does have a "game face" she displays often and that she refers to a kind of alter-ego to her off-stage persona. But that is never used to disconnect from her audience.

👍👍 This was 2018 (difficult year) Yui left due to health issues and as an transitional experiment 2 dancers were added to complete their world tour. No one like having 2 extra backup dancers (Moa was the only one equipped eith a headset mic as the other 2 just did choreo) Eventually it was decided to go back to the balanced 3 formation with a rotation of 3 different backups (without mics) to join Suzuka and Moa. Also in 2018 lead guitarist of the Kami Band died of injuries suffered after falling from an observation platfotm while stargazing). On April 1, 2023 Momoko Okasaki (who had been the most used of ghe 3 rotating backups was named an official 3rd member and given a headset mic like Moa) BABYMETAL is THE best LIVE band on the planet HQ Pro Shot videos of LIVE performances are the way to go because you get the awesome intros, actual LIVE audio instead of studio over LIVE footage, actual Kami Band instrumentals and actual crowd noise and participation.
