Did you look kitsune up? 😂 Thanks Sam for the vocal analysis of Max's voice. He has been a professional singer since 2003 so I assume any vocals techniques that could be harmful are only temporary for this song. He normally signs backing tracks for his solo songs and is part of SM entertainment which are known for demanding a high level of vocal quality from their artists. Thanks again, I enjoyed it. 😊

Hi, thank you for your analysis of Max's voice. 😊 Like you said, he's like one-man boy band and he's pretty aware if it. Here's his latest interview with VOGUE about his different voices within this song. VOGUE: "This album is full of different voices of Max Changmin. Not even between tracks, but even within one song, your vocals change." MAX CHANGMIN: "I get more bored now when I hear a 3-4 minute song with just one vocal color. Like there's a beginning-middle-end flow to a song, i think vocals should be dynamic, building from quite to strong. I don't know if this is the perfect metaphor, but people like the calm, quiet sea, but they find the story of the unpredictable sea more interesting. They also prefer emotionally charged works rather than a mellow work with just innocent and beauty"

As you heard Changmin/Max is known for his powerful high notes (even more powerful than Onew or Jonghyun from SHINee or Chen and Baekhyun from EXO -- all SM Entertainment powerhouse vocalists), he literally has one of the widest note ranges of almost any Kpop artist. (Hence, the fact that he is harmonizing with himself in this song.) In a high note battle he always wins. It wouldn't be a TVXQ/Changmin song if we didn't get to hear at least one unbelievable high note from him. (He's been training for more than 18 years as a singer, so he knows what he is doing when it comes to using his voice. Any "harmful" vocal techniques he is using, I am sure he is fully aware of what he is doing.) TVXQ truly are all-time legends in the music industry. For anyone who knows SM, it is no surprise that the members of TVXQ are outstanding vocalists. Being some of the best dancers and singers in the industry is what SM Entertainment is known for. All of SM's artists were first chosen for their visuals, vocals and/or dance skills. Even the company's rappers get intense vocal training, so the entire company is full of amazing singers. SM Entertainment is the company that started the Kpop industry with the very first Kpop idol group H.O.T. (Highfive Of Teenager) back in 1996, and they are now one of the largest and most influential entertainment companies in Korea and around the world. So they are experts at finding and developing the best singers. That's why the company is considered the vocal powerhouse of the industry, which happens to also have some of the best dancers as well. And all of SM's artists train to build endurance and stamina by doing cardio exercises while singing, so they are able to sing live in concert while performing really intense choreography for more than 3 hours straight and still maintain stable and flawless vocals the entire time. Here is some background to help you understand the dynamics of TVXQ better. TVXQ (English and Chinese)/DBSK (Korean)/ Tohoshinki (Japanese), which each are the abbreviations/acronyms of the words in each language that translates to mean "Rising Gods of the East," debuted in 2003 as a 5 member group. But, in 2010 three of their members left SM Entertainment and the group and formed a new group called JYJ -- the initials of the members: Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong. (Up until recently, JYJ was still a group and they still produced music, but because they left SM Entertainment -- one of the most powerful and influential companies in the industry -- on less than ideal terms, it has made it more difficult for them to promote themselves and their music. So the members of JYJ are more known as actors and producers than they are as singers now.) However, Max/Changmin and U-Know/Yunho continued as TVXQ as a duo. The day after Christmas was TVXQ/DBSK/Tohoshinki's 18th anniversary, and even now as a duo they are so talented that they have the vocal range to cover all the parts of a song between the two of them, including rap. TVXQ's fandom is Cassiopeia and their fan color is red, so when you watch a TVXQ concert you will see an ocean of red. (Which I think is one reason why we see all the red in this MV.) Welcome to the Cassiopeia fandom. If you like TVXQ then you are a Cassi. Changmin (the youngest member) was 15 and U-Know was 17 years old when they debuted, so even though they are one of the senior Kpop groups, Changmin is only 34 and U-know is 36. TVXQ is SM's most senior group, but U-Know and Changmin are still younger than, or the same age as, many of the members of the legendary groups who came after them within their generation. They are best friends with Super Junior and they pretty much all grew up together. Changmin is also best friends with Minho from SHINee. And Xiumin from EXO says Changmin was one of the reason why he auditioned for SM because he wanted to meet Changmin and become like him. (Fun fact: Changmin got married in 2020.) Tohoshinki (TVXQ) are one of the most famous singers in Japan as well, even among Japanese artists. And like SHINee and BoA, they are so popular in Japan that they are considered part of the mainstream music scene. TVXQ has one of the biggest worldwide fan bases and they sell out some of the largest concert venues in the world. They are SM Entertainment's top selling group, easily selling out concert tours around the world. Fun fact: SM used "Devil" to draw Changmin/TVXQ into its SM Culture Universe with the reference to Kwanyga in the lyrics and the pink planet you see in the MV, etc. I guess as Rising Gods of the East, it makes sense that TVXQ could be otherworldly-beings just like the rest of SM's groups and artists, in order to connect their storyline to the rest of SM's Universe story. Changmin has been nicknamed Bambi by his fans and he has taken it on as a sort of spirit animal that represents him, so I think the deer in the MV is supposed to symbolize him. If you read the lyrics, the song is about having self doubts and bad thoughts and harboring those feelings within your heart. So in the end the deer (himself) becomes like the Devil because he has now embraced those feelings. During U-Know's and his reaction video to the MV, Changmin said the forest you see him in is a real forest and they had to take a boat to get there. They used drones with lights on them to light the area to give it that spooky effect. If you want to see how this MV was filmed, check out his behind the scenes filming video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KWESz1Q7pd0.html. And although "Devil" is a remake of a song by Alex Runo, Changmin wrote his own lyrics for the song and gave it a different storyline than the original version. "Devil" is the title track off his second solo mini album Devil which came out about a month ago. If you haven't yet, check out his pre-release "Fever" stage video that was part of SM's New Year's Eve SMTown SMCU Express online concert and "Maniac" promotional video which are also songs on this album

@@monique2939 They're all SM artists, so no one is better than the other. However, Changmin has had high note battles with all of them and they have all conceded that he can outdo them. This is coming from their own mouths not just my opinion.

I really enjoyed your analysis! Max Changmin has such a unique voice. I've been listening to him since he was like late teens and he's always just had a powerful voice. Even more so now that he's been a singer for almost 20 years. He just opens his mouth and power voice comes out haha seeing live was incredible! I recommend checking out his songs Maniac and Fever!

Btw, react to TVXQ's "Love in the Ice" or "Bolero". It's Changmin's group, debuted with 5 members and now it's a duo. They were supposed to be an acapella group and the things the voices of the five members did together are magical. There is no other kpop group as talented , all-rounders, with vocals like theirs, really. There is a reason why they are famous for their live performances...

Thank u for the reaction! You should check out his album, you'll be stunned by the things his voice can do. Or at least the other 2 music videos for this comeback, "Maniac" and "Fever". These songs are an experience, nobody can perform Fever like him (the song was made specially for him), Changmin's voice is already a music style on its own.

I hope you would have look again at SB19 especially their song MAPA. You may start with their lyric video because it has english cc (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DDyr3DbTPtk.html) but their KBS Round Festival or the Wish Award live performances are beautiful. The harmonies are beautiful.
