MARCO SURGERY "At the end of the 1990s, Marco Hietala was operated from the throat with polyp. The surgery had nasty consequences. Marco Hietala, a bassist singer from the Nightwish and Tarot bands, for example, was losing his voice as a result of unsuccessful surgery. In his Stainless Life biography, published today, Hietala explains how, in the late 1990s, he drew attention to the special distortion in his voice. The doctor found the left side of the vocal cords polyp and recommended that the surgery. Hietala agreed - and regretted his decision. "The doctor said he had to use force (somehow I doubt he was a Jedi, though xD) to go to the polyp, but it shouldn't be a problem," Hietala says in his book. The voice should return to normal in a couple of weeks. This was not the case. At first, the situation was so bad that Hietala couldn't sing at all. In an interview with Savon Sanomat, Hietala recalls that the situation was very distressing, even desperate. - I lost the channel and ability, through which I had largely built my personality and my whole life. This could be compared to a sprinter who has to sit in a wheelchair with broken legs. I thought, what I should do with my life?, Hietala says. The loss of sound has not been raised earlier by Hietala because "It was late 90s, and my visibility to the people was not high". The story has a happy end as Hietala's voice has been in a good shape for a long time. However, it has required a lot of work over the years. Hietala points out that the voice never returned to pre-operative levels. - My clear upper falsetto was totally killed by that operation, Hietala says in his book: - Much later from the left side of my vocal cords, was found a permanent nerve damage, that was caused from that operation. That is, the left and right sides of the vocal cords do not sync with each other properly. Well, in the name of honesty: I have managed with them." More Marco: High Hopes, a Nightwish tribute to Pink Floyd! I grew up with Pink Floyd in the 70's and early 80's. They are very difficult to cover, but in this case I actually prefer the Nightwish version.

Agreed, you definitely need to check out their "High Hopes" cover!!! ALSO Marko's actual solo project. Start with "The voice of my father" (or for even deeper feeling, the original Finnish version 'Isäni ääni', imo his vocals are even more powerful in this when it comes to emotion etc).

Nightwish - High Hopes!

Some may have mentioned it already but there is the band Marco sang in before Nightwish, Tarot, and a while ago he released a solo album Pyre of the Black Heart (or Mustan sydämen rovio). The album was recorded in both Finnish and English and it's pure gold.

Seems kind of unfair to other bands out there, that Nightwish not only they got Floor, they also have Marco. Troy (the flute guy) is also a pretty good singer.

You're correct that he emphasizes the vocal fry and other little things a lot more than in the actual recorded version of this song. What's interesting though is that no two live performances of The Islander actually sound the same. If you look up other recordings from different concerts, they all sound completely distinct, especially the end where he cuts loose. I genuinely believe that Marco just wings it every time.

Marco.....Solo... The band covers " High Hopes " by Pink Floyd, Marco kills it. Nightwish song highlighting Marco, I like " While Your Lips Are Still Red.

The guitar is a custom made Warwick/Framus Infinity/Panthera double neck bass and guitar (about 8 kilos, I think). This is a great performance. I always shed some tears when the bandmates joined with him. The total killer is the Nightwish's cover to Pink Floyd's "High hopes". Greetings from Finland!

Strong recommendation: 'Tides' by Tarot! Another a bit 'softer' Marco song but wow is it great.

I love Floor's smile in this. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but she always seems so pleased when other members of the band get center stage, so to speak. The whole band does, but her smile here was such a good example. Whenever one of them has a solo, you can see the others stepping back, smiling at them or helping shine the spotlight on in some way. You can see them lifting each other up.

Great reaction to a great performance! High Hopes 2005 is a great Pink Floyd cover, and the safest choise. Marko shines on vocals, but all the other guys shine too. All in all, a very good performance, they create an eerie atmosphere. "Isänä ääni" or "Kiviä" official music videos from Marko's solo album 2019 are very good too. These are in Finnish. English language versions are not as good, says not only me but many non Finns too. Some say they would listen to Marko if he was singing a dictionary. And you can always find an english translation of the lyrics. "Isäni ääni" ("My Father's Voice"), "Kiviä" ("Stones"). I'm OK with it though if you were to choose an English language version of one of these songs. Great lyrics - on "Isäni ääni" especially. Hi from Helsinki Finland!

A lot of reaction videos come up on my feed, especially Nightwish ones, most I may watch for a minute or two. I have to say, you are the first reaction video coaches that I love watching. Your knowledge and joy, mirrors the audiences , and you say so many intelligent comments Bravo Ken.

Agree with many have already said...'High Hopes' is a good one to listen to. It's every bit as good as the Pink Floyd original, if not better.

Marco did write the lyrics and composed the music himself. With the background of the other bandmembers, it really shows that they appreciate the input of every bandmember and not only rely on composition and lyrics from Tuomas Holopainen.

His playing alone is amazing . That riff after the first chorus is legitimately one of the best Ive ever heard

Can we just spare a moment to chuckle at Marko's face (visible on the screen behind him) the second before rest of the band joins him? And honestly, this video just won't get boring no matter how many people I see react to it - it's a beautiful song, and a fantastic performance. Told you there were weasels in the Nightwish rabbit hole!!!.... I asked where the subtitles went too but then I worked it out. (refer Flavio Vergottini's comment.)... Another vote for "High Hopes" from End of Era (same show as Phantom with Tarja).. Emppu slays the solo too - in tribute to Dave Gilmour. "The Beast" (double guitar & bass) really weighs on Marko - hence the name!

Great review of a wonderful song. Do look up the lyrics. Two other things to comment on. Number one is how much Floor appreciates Marko. The smile on her face when he walks back could light the Stadium lights! The second is from my perspective as a drummer. What Kai did on this song is subtle and complicated, when you realize he essentially was using one hand because he had a shaker in the other. He was using ghost notes on the snare, and he had a few snare-tom-cymbal progressions one handed that requires skill, which he has in abundance. :)

Nightwish has so many good songs!! And such varied themes and feel on all their albums got to see them in the US live front in center was incredible

Another great performance from Marco is from the live version of Planet Hell which was uploaded in 2014, he shows some great aggresive vocals there and it's one of the earliest performances with Floor in the band, having joined as a then touring member just a couple of weeks prior

One amazing thing with Nightwish is that besides Emppu, the lead guitarist, they have TWO members (Marko and Troy) that could easily be hired as lead guitarists by many bands, but are more known for other instruments (and singing) in Nightwish.

I respect Marco as a singer a lot because he has evolved and developed, and just learned his singing performance through the years. With every new Nightwish album, I always find Marco reaching new level as a singer. Comparing this performance of The Islander to the good old Once Upon the Trubadour (for example)- it's like lightyears away.

They made a music video for this that imho is worth watching. It was not the bands intention to make a music video for the song at first, but it ended up happening. It is also with their second singer. Also there is a rumor that Marco has a bumper sticker that says "Floor Jansen is my backup singer." A further rumor is she gave it to him.
