Finally someone comments on Sierra and her breathing, I thought I was crazy! If you watch other performances of hers, you’ll notice that she mostly breathes through her nose like you said, especially in songs that require her to use a lot of head voice. ANOTHER FUN FACT: Ramin isn’t a “trained singer”! He’s self taught! He read books about singing and copied artists that he liked, and that’s how he learned to sing! He’s stated multiple times that he can’t read sheet music, notes, and that he in theory doesn’t know what belting even is! Pretty impressive if you ask me!

Same! The way Sierra breathes is so distracting and not good form of any singer. I'm a singer (a soprano) and I had to train myself to not suck in air (it's only natural to want to), either through my nose or mouth. It's a very amateur thing to do. I was quite surprised when I heard it the first time but then I heard it again and again and wondered how she hasn't had this bad habit called out to her. All that said, she does have a beautiful voice but I think better breathing techniques would make her voice even better.

I bet he can read music..he is teaching his son piano he reads it like I do, the notes on the space spell "face". And every good boy deserves food, he understands enough to get by but like me he is no expert on it, unlike me he is talented and amazing. My phantom my dangerous doctor...you know when you find your angel of music.

You don't necesarilly need to be able to read music if you are a singer, as long as you have someone who studies the roles with you. Reading the pitch of a sheet needs a lot of training anyway. Rhythm however is crucial and that is really were being able to read music is vital when studying a role, if you do it on your own.

I’ve watched this performance like 200 times, and it took me a while to figure out why Christine gets randomly freaked out - it’s because when she pressed her face up against The Phantom’s, she felt his mask. Such an amazing little detail there, props to these two for such great acting ❤️

Yeah, this ends up being a really quick moment for Sierra's Christine that can be really easy to miss. I've seen some other Christines who stretch out and broadcast this moment better for a theater setting. One - I can't remember whom - actually stopped singing "consume us" as she pulled away, put her hand against the side of his hooded face to double check, and then screamed "No!" as she started to run. It was just enough to make you realize what was happening.

Remember: the plot of this play in this scene has the phantom trying to impersonate Piangi, therefore Ramin’s tone, volume, pitch, vibrato, rolled R’s etc. all mimic Piangi’s delivery in an effort to trick her & the audience.

Two things I love about this performance in particular- 1. You mentioned Ramin rolling his Rs, and I’ve noticed he leans into the vibrato a little more here than in some of his other songs in the show. I love that little touch just subtly showing he’s trying to not outright give away to the “audience” that he’s taken Piangis place. 2. I love Sierras reaction right before she breaks away to start her verse. I was a little confused the first time I watched it why she wasn’t acting more hesitant being on stage with the Phantom, but then I realized that was the moment her Christine actually realized it was him. Such a great acting choice!

Aye, what isn't illustrated very well on stage is how Christine knows that the Phantom is someone who is always cold to the touch. It's not really elaborated on during the stage performances, but it's important enough in the books that THIS is when she realizes it's not Piangi she's singing with.

Sierra had to bring like that because she was down with a cold during this performance. Another thing of why they're being aggressive was because when she leaned onto the right side of his face it was hard, so she realised he was the phantom. So she was trying to leave but the phantom pulled her back.

They were chosen by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the 25th Anniversary special/run. For Ramin specifically, Andrew liked how he has kind of the rock n' roll edge in his performance which Andrew loves for this role. The original, original Phantom was an 80s rock/new wave type video. I too have seen Phantom many times, including with Michael Crawford. I love how each performer brings their own interpretation. I really, really love Ramin and Sierra. I got to perform this show for my seniors a few months back. There were only two of us, so I played Erik and Raoul (and Meg, but I don't like to talk about that!). I came across this version while doing research. I absolutely fell in love with Sierra Boggess. She seems, to me, head and shoulders above everyone else I've seen in the role. Her super expressive face probably helps. As for Ramin Karimloo, he's fantastic as well, but I don't fan-boy out quite as much because I have several favorite Phantoms. He's one, along with Norm Lewis, Colm Wilkinson and John Owen-Jones. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that Ramin Karimloo really had no formal training coming into musical theater, which if true, makes him so much more impressive. I think this was my favorite video you've done! Having that history with the musical really sets up being able to break down these singers and I feel like it was more in depth because of this. It was more analysis than reaction, which I enjoyed. I feel like I learned quite a bit. Now, I do like the more reactive videos, in particular the first/cold reactions, like the one to Hadestown. But this was more educational, imo. And I liked hearing about the place that Phantom holds in your heart. PotO is such a classic, for good reason. I periodically tire myself out on re-listening, take a break, and then deep dive all over again, lol. The OBC was actually the first CD I ever owned. :) (Yeah, I'm old, this was in the 90s!)

Besides having so much chemistry on stage they are practically sucking the souls outta one another, I think Ramin and Serria were so good in this production because they really put the teeth back in these characters. Ramin with his Byronic mania of Phantom, there are not enough scary/angry/aggressive Phantoms IMO, he’s supposed to be the villain! And Serria’s Christine with all her passion and desire, she is far from the naive little mouse we’ve come to expect at times. Every time I watch this performance I absolutely believe these two are infatuated with each other with the hot burn of a first love compounded by years trauma and it’s like you’re not so much watching a gothic love story but a coming of age story for both of them.

It seems Sierra does breathe thru her nose when she's on some of the lower notes. Could be stylistic, not sure. However on a lot of the higher notes, she clearly breathes thru her mouth as you recommended.

I absolutely adore this musical ^^ it got me out of some dark times about a decade ago. The one I was introduced to and fell in love with was the 2004 version with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the vocals in that version, especially Butler's cuz I heard he had to be taught to sing while they were filming. Supposedly his Scottish accent made things difficult, but in my opinion he really pulled it off ^^ Maybe "Music of The Night"? I still get goosebumps when he gets to that part of the song that goes: 'close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar'

just to comment about sierra's breathing! I know for the entirety of this performance of Phantom at Albert Hall, her louder breathing could be due to the fact that she was sick at the time of performing! It does affect her sound and I don't think she would normally perform that way but due to her being ill maybe she had to breathe alternately in order to hit the notes.

I’m posting this comment before actually watching the full video so I may be wrong, but I feel like something that a lot of people don’t really mention about Ramin in this role is his absolute flawless voice acting. Not just singing or his body movements, but depending on context (especially clear in Phantom) he has two very distinct voice types. One is more aggressive and demonic (one could even say ghost like) while the other is more charming and angelic. The two songs in phantom that make this exceptionally clear are Point of No Return and Wandering Child. In this one, it’s after Christine exposes him (both times) or in wandering child when Raul wins Christine over

When I was in marching band they taught to breath in through the mouth mostly too. But can also be both nose and mouth. I like using both. I played Melophone Marching Horn and French Horn back then. But I can play so many instruments. But most best is French Horn and Drum set. I like Christine in Movie version more than this one. They said that in novel Christine were only in her teenage too (around 14-16). While phantom was in his early thrity and Raoul was in his early twenty.

Fun fact Ramin has said that he’s never had any training. He doesn’t know notes. He said he looks at his music like a map. If notes go up he knows to go higher. If notes go down he knows to go lower. I thought that was pretty insane. His voice is amazing, and has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Laura Benanti ❤️❤️.

I don´t know if someone has already commented on this, but I think that Sierra´s breathing might have been a queue for the musicians because is only in certain parts of the number, and although I´ve heard her done that other times, at least in this one I think that is the reason.

Lovely video. At 6:45ish That dress is heavy and has a built in corset which limits the breathing for the actresses playing Christine. Same goes for the dress that Carlotta is wearing when you first see her after the Overture.
@SongsFromASuitcase
@SongsFromASuitcase 3 года назад
Most likely it’s a costume corset for singing. They made them different for opera singers even back in the day compared to regular day wear corsets so I would be shocked if they didn’t still do the same now a days. .

Ramin is singing live. Gerard was doing a film and if it wasn't right, it could be done over, plus there was a sound studio to make all the adjustments needed to get it to sound good. Still, Gerard did do a decent job of it.
@Mulbert

I read on IMDB that Gerard was the only one of the three leads who had no prior singing experience except for singing in the shower, he had lessons before the film obviously but he said the hardest thing was having to hold the last note of Music Of The Night for so long. I actually thought his singing in the film was better than Patrick Wilson's (who I love so much as an actor!), I was surprised to learn he'd been in musicals before
