You completely skipped the E natural above high C he hits close to the end. As a singer myself, I have trouble as a woman hitting those notes. This is also an encore and he’s already been singing for two hours, so a wavering of the notes occasionally can be forgiven. Not to mention the fact that only a trained war will be able to distinguish those tiny moments. Tate is amazing and so is the band. The entire band offer great vocal support. It’s difficult for lots of people who don’t get into metal/rock bands, to understand the music. You may need to react/listen to more before assuming anything. Not offended, just want people to understand how metal and progressive metal vocalists and musicians operate.
love your coment, you are absolutly right, and while he was listening in his face there was only contempt, his final conment was: yeh hi's fine..... its ok to have diferent opinion but this was diferent XD
I couldn't have said it better myself. That is, hmm. I'll rephrase: I agree with you emphatically. I love how this guy took the time to listen, but he seemed a bit early-dismissive for some reason. Those E5s that Geoff can (could) hit were UNBELIEVABLE and are so underrated. Ken feigned interest in this, but I guess I should be happy that he even entertained metal music at all. I dunno. Anyway, Rebecca, I agree with you.
@Fill J. no, no he doesn't.. In the sense that there is no need to compare the two voices as in competition... They are equally amazing in certain performance perspectives. IMO
I love the astonishment from the vocal coaches when Geoff lets loose. I actually feel sorry for you, that because of your parents you missed seeing and knowing about incredible bands like Queensryche, who were simply superb, on every level.
Every other reaction video, the hosts hear that E-5, and their jaws are dropped and eyeballs popped. How anyone can not be impressed with that is beyond me.
Thank you for saying what I was thinking. Dude should stick to reacting to Frank Sinatra or whatever genre he likes. Me, I appreciate God given musical instruments in human throats. It doesn't matter if it's Bobby Hatfield singing "Unchained Melody", or Tarja Turunen singing "Wishmaster". I can't carry a tune in a bucket, so maybe that is why I envy the special few with the gift. I like classical, country, pop, and most forms of hard rock and metal. Lucky for me,,,
With the comment of "singing the easiest vowel spread AAAAAA", I have yet to hear a vocal coach match the power and ability of Geoff Tate, from this era. Even the new singer Todd can't match. Sure he can hit high notes but nobody will be mistaken for being Tate.
@@gneric85 Check out Dimash Kudaibergen; he's not a vocal coach, but he's an outstanding vocalist. He does more of a classical/pop blend in most of his songs, but he's phenomenal and has amazing vocal control and uses vibrato (among a vast array of other techniques) a lot. He could definitely sing metal if he wanted to.
@FatalPies When I saw Crimson Glory back in the late 80's in Boston, Midnight had a compressor on his voice. He had a crazy high range. Red Sharks comes to mind. Awesome band RIP Midnight
Todd comes across (to me) as a Falsetto singer/screamer and one of those generic metal "great voices" e.g. some of Candlemass' singers, the guy who replaced Jorn Lande in Beyond Twilight, the Seven Witches vocalist to name a few. Originally designated as a budget Geoff Tate to capitalise on the metalryche fans and people chomping at the bit for nothing but the early stuff. The stuff I've listened to with Todd comes off more as generic metal. It's obvious that (for me at least) Geoff Tate and Chris DeGarmo are who gave Queensryche their identity. Even now, you can hear Geoff's voice and instantly know it's him even if he ain't constantly belting out the fifth octave anymore.
Unfortunately I agree with most of what has already been said. What an underwhelming reaction to an overwhelming performance!! Arguably (and I will argue with you) the best live vocal performance is "Take Hold Of The Flame" circa. 1984. Just look at the number of reaction videos, many by well-known vocal coaches/teachers. The detail varies from "OMG, that was cool" to " Here he was in the range of D above high C". If you want to understand exactly what Mr. Tate is doing with his voice; check out Mike Goodrich - Inner Singer. For me, he's done the best job of analyzing Geoff's voice because his initial reactions are emotional - then he explains what he just heard.
Geoff had a 4 octave range and was classically trained and had been tutored by "Maestro" David Kyle. Heard the other members also had training by David as well. Other Seattle area singers, Ann Wilson, Layne Staley and Chris Cornell also had training with the "Maestro"!
@FatalPies it always has to be a competition. Geoff was more graceful with his high notes, Midnight was more raw with his. They are both amazing singers, they both can hit the same notes in this era.. so I think it’s unfair to say two of the greatest upper register singers of all time are better than the other.
Wow... I have to question how good of a vocal coach you are after this reaction. This is seriously one of the best live metal/rock performances of all time. Geoff Tate is an unbelievable vocalist that I doubt you could hold a candle to. Not that I'll be back to find out since there are so many better vocal coach reactions out there that actually break down these amazing performances without having to make themselves sit through it
Tate in his 60s can sing better than his critics. Tate isn't my personal favorite metal singer of all time but he is in Top 10. Saw them in the 80s, he was flawless through the whole 1 1/2 hour set!
Ha ha! Geoff Tate may be the greatest rock vocalist of all time, I love it when someone has no clue and hears this master for the 1st time. I suggest you discover this man’s talents further. Roads to Madness is my fave song
So Queensryche was absolutely lethal in their prime, technically gifted as a whole (Besides Geoff's vocals, Chris was arguably one of the best guitarist of his time) Operation Mindcrime is one of the most important and incredible albums ever conceived. They were so good that at a point, bands didn't want them opening on tour for them because they'd take over their shows.
Back in those days Geoff was at the absolute top of the game . The very best of the best . Nobody else came anywhere near close to being on Queensryches level .
You already said you were sheltered as a teen, so makes sense you couldn't really appreciate that performance. You should dive into more uncharted music that was forbidden to your house. Break free from your parents hold your a grown man now. What you just witnessed was greatness.
Geoff Tate is one of the all time greats... that dude could sing his ass off. He was coming here to Pensacola and I was going to see him, but the Rona has now put it off until December...
well, judging by the beating youve taken in the comments, im just gonna bow out and say that your disrespect for one of the greatest voices in music is unacceptable.
No auto tune...live. Excellent. I’ve seen them live many years ago and the guy was amazing. One of those groups that sounds great Live. I’ve been to concerts as you know I’m sure, it was obvious the studio made them sound good because the live performance they just weren’t that good. These guys? They were extremely legit
I absof*****glutely love this band! Geoff Tate back in the day was untouchable and there has never been a metal band as incredibly unique or talented as Queensryche before or since. Warning is hands down my most favorite album ever and this performance is ON POINT x10!
This is neither both . This is mixed voice with obviously chest support and resonance with a larynx technique for the upper stuff . There s no break between his both chest / upper stuff . The sound is connected and full in both aeras That can't be pure headvoice Falsetto is a disconnected voice with no chords folds vibrating Falsetto sounds like a ghost voice There s a misconception . You can pull that off with that power and prescence in falsetto .
@@Nissardpertugiu your right I should not had said falsetto, because it's really just head voice/M2 production, mixed is not what you think, mix is only a few notes on the passaggio, what Tate is doing is bridging into head voice below his vocal break/passaggio, like a countertenor, the resonance comes from hitting air to the back of the mouth with a rised soft palate and a relaxed larynx, again like a countertenor/ how females to their head voice in Opera, he is a very well trained voice, you can hear it in his openness and roundness, also his use of vowels.
This Coach Has Zero Idea At what what He Doesnt Know ... What a GOON , Geoffe Tate Is THE BEST METAL Vocalist in MANY MANY MANY peoples respect and opinion TATE is to VOCALS what Steve Vai is to Guitar😎👍
Ken, I think your distaste for this type of music comes oozing through your reaction (unfortunately). Geoff Tate is regarded by MANY as top 3 GOAT in metal.
Not by me. Dio, Halford, Bruce...These guys are a league above Geoff. Queensryche is a good band, but only in america people seem to think they are legendary, when in the rest of the metal community they are a second tier band. Personaly I dont like Geoff's singing, whenever he bridges up into the mix he just doesnt bridge back down. he just pushes his head voice down and sounds really weird on the mid range notes. Michael Kiske also uses this technique, but does it much better in my opinion. I just dont understand why american metal fans seem to think so highly of this band. I even hear some say they are in the "big 3 of progmetal". In reality 80% of what they do cant even be called prog. Imagine thinking that this band is comparable to Dream Theater! What a joke!
@Paul Belodeau Michael Kiske is much more influential in the metal community at large than Geoff Tate. Michael Kiske is largely responsible for making powermetal the most popular form of melodic metal in the 90's. Objectively speaking Geoff Tate hasnt been nearly as big an influence in the metal genre as any of the vocalists I mentioned. I can respect someone liking and being nostalgic about something. But from your comment I gather that you are more a Queensryche fan than a musician or even an actual metal listener.
@@13christbane Geoff was amazing through the first 3-4 albums...and then I blame the writing and not his vocals as much...he was still good but the albums sucked.
Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, Sebastian Bach and many other metal singers are classically trained. The "leap" as some call it isn't that far. Classical music and most metal are the same. Look at some of the best guitarists from this era and they are also classically trained.
the danger in identifying the tools that a singer is singing is that it reduces the art of singing to seemingly simple tradecraft. it is not simple. give an ordinary joe a set of carpentry tools and ask him to build you a house. same thing applies to singing.
Plysomack - obviously. my point being is that the reviewer made it sound as if the singer was just utilizing tricks and shrugs it off as if it’s easy ... it is not.
These response videos are supposed to be technical breakdowns. Ken Tamplin demonstrates the techniques as he responds, and makes it clear that to be good, to be great, you have to start with the basics and practice. This clown doesn't.
@@WittyCaMoNinja He's probably envious he never could or will hit those registers. I think he was totally disrespectful and envious. I've seen people who would never listen to metal crying when they did a reaction to this
He also did the high notes with I in the word light going up to E5 with vibrato, O with hold and of course A but you forgot the first one which was a soft ah sound but still hit those notes. He lived on E5 throughout this song and you never mentioned the notes?
try Queensryche: Silent Lucidity, or Queensryche: Jet City Woman, or Queensryche: Empire...which is still VERY relevent today, or Queensryche: Another Rainy Night...all of Empire album and Operation Mind Crime album were killer
that last line Ken.. to give more than 100%.. THIS is one of the rare and true examples of that universal rarity.. That was captured live.. This is one of those for sure.
To bad about your parents might like metal a little more I'm a 53 year old black male metal head this band is special and Geoff Tate is top 5 metal singers no question . By the way jinjer just dropped a new video today . peace ✌️ from Alaska
My dads best friend used to mange queensryche and the stories he’s told me are amazing. It’s such a privilege to grow up in Washington and hear so many great stories of him and his friend being back stage at so many shows. My dad has a Polaroid of him on rob halfords motorcycle and has hung out with Chris Cornell, lane Staley and you name it. I wish I could have lived his life because I grew up idolizing these guys and he saw most of the grunge scene at basement shows and got to hangout with them!
Wait, wait, wait…you knew Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson but did not know Queensryche and Geoff Tate? That bums me out! LOL! Tate, in 1984, was untouchable. Truly superb. Enjoy!
I don’t understand why you wouldn’t pull up the lyrics. Everything is available online these days. Now I’ve seen a lot of vocal coach responses to Geoff Tates ability, But what I haven’t seen is a vocal coach show their skills...
They're from Seattle (so am I}went to queensryche as rising stars in 83 and they are one of my favorite band ..If I could get you to listen to "when the rain comes " and "someone else"( just him and piano) you will really hear his opera training he took ,I love them because they have so many different sounds
I’ve watched all the vocal coach channel reviews of this Tate performance and you’re the only one who doesn’t seem to think it’s amazing. You might want to consider watching the Beth Roars review, she does a great job of explaining why this performance is so impressive.
*Those concert shirts were called jerseys. Sleeves that stopped just at the forearm. Yeah, I had several of those like Triumph and UFO, Boston, Iron Maiden & etc. Ah, the 80's. The big hair Heavy Metal years. The era when music was REALLY music. No corners cut. When bands gave it their all for their fans.*
Geoff Tate is amazing. Luckily I've seen him a few times life, back when he was in Queensryche. Ray evolved so much since the recording of the song LOL you got to give them a bigger chance. Very very talented
I had the chance to have an after show in Paris with Queensryche on the Empire Tour. Geoff sang a part of Silent Lucidity a capella .... It was beautiful, strong and smooth half an hour or so after the show ended. The band were all very nice guys...
The band was incredible! I am glad I got to see them live. Rock musicians are some of the most skilled at their instruments. Just take the band RUSH for example.
The title should be Vocal Coach MONOLOGUES over Queensryche - Take hold of the flame... Also, GREAT JOB completely ignoring the highest note he sings in this live performance, at the end of the song. GREAT JOB buddy.
Ken......hello friend. If you TRULY want to hear this singer listen to their song "Roads to Madness".............stunning vocalist. Thx bud, God Bless you
Like I said in other earlier comments, he used to sing opera there’s no money in singing opera so he decided to form a rock band. They won on the MTV 120 minutes and whoever won got the most calls. They got a record deal and of course I called in for Queensrÿche. You gotta listen to the songs. I mentioned this guy is a genius. Terrrance
You should have shown us all how easy it is to hit the E5 with the open AAAAA so we could hear what you're trying to explain to us. It's a lot easier to believe when a vocal coach proves his point live in the moment. (Jerseys were only for the cool kids...)
This guy isn't a vocal coach....his reaction is practically no reaction to one of the 4 horsemen of the 80's that being Dio, Halford, Dickerson, and Tate...It's always hilarious watching a reaction video from a so called vocal coach but doesn't make any actual meaningful comments about the vocals he's hearing.....Like another person commented this is an encore song after already singing for two hours. I seen Queensryche live in a tiny club in NYC back in 1986 and believe me Tate is utterly phenomenal!!
Here ya go Ken: We see the light of those who find A world has passed them by To late to save a dream that's growing cold We realize that fate must hide its face From those who try To see the distant signs of unforetold Oh oh, take hold From a haze came a rage of thunder Distant signs of darkness on the way Fading cries scream of pain and hunger But in the night the light will guide your way So take hold of the flame Don't you see life's a game So take hold of the flame You've got nothing to lose, but everything to gain Ride, to a place beyond our time Reach, for the edges of your mind, and you are there See, that the light will find its way Back to a place where it will stay, make it stay Throw down the chains of oppression that bind you With the air of freedom the flame grows bright We are the strong, the youth united We are one, we are children of the light So take hold of the flame Don't you see life's a game So take hold of the flame You've got nothing to lose, but everything to gain 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hell, I was born in 1964! I love his voice. Going tomorrow night to see him at The Blue Note, in Harrison, Ohio! Can’t wait! I know as you get older your voice changes. If you want I’ll send a video from tomorrow night. It’s his 30 year concert. Empire being one. Love your post.
