This song condemns white supremacy and police brutality in the US. The lyrics were "Some of those who work (police) forces are the same who burn crosses" and "Those who died are justified by wearing a badge (police) they're the chosen whites". You should watch their live 1993 performance of this song. They absolutely KILL it in their live 1993 performance of this song. EPIC Other Rage songs that you MUST hear: - "Know Your Enemy" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one) - "The Ghost of Tom Joad" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one) - The official music video for "Bulls on Parade" (probably their most famous song)
Ironic the second it was a liberal in office it became "submit to the machine and take your vaccine and boosters and stop asking questions". They're f*cking tools to the max and massive hypocrites.
30 years old, still timeless. Seeing people jump up and down wherever and whenever this is being played. Love how they promised BBC radio not to do the F bit at the end, did it anyway and got pulled off air.
This song is their most straightforward song- it had their trademark energy but doesn’t really capture Tom Morello’s singular genius on the guitar or Zack’s full lyrical brilliance. My recommendation is Fistful of Steel Live at Pinkpop ‘93. That really shows the band at their best.
I'll check that out. Not sure I've seen that performance. Big Rage fan here. Fistful of steel is so masterful and often overlooked. Probably Zack's best flow on wax, too.
Rebecca, you mentioned mid-way through about how RATM are an example of how sometimes merely speaking isn't enough to convey your point. And that is a great insight, and something that lots of casual listeners to Rage miss, especially with this song. Their music isn't about getting angry or rebelling just for the hell of it. They want that energy focused in a very particular direction. Also, I saw them in concert for the first time ever just a couple weeks ago. Great show.
I finally saw them for the first time on July 9th. It was AMAZING but way too short. I'm their age and I get it but I wanted to hear every single song, unrealistically so. I bought two shirts and some pins because life is short. \m/
I agree. Well said. Quite a few bands if punk, ska....Black Flag, HED P.e., many more .....it for those who justify a badge as they the good guy but will burn crosses. Hed P.E has a song "Sophia" which speaks of how technology, SM, brought the world chaos.
@@mothiskobeni it’s not about trump. plenty of people (like myself, who has never voted republican in my life) find ratm to be a joke these days given their support of bigpharma. the band that once said, “f u i wont do what u tell me” now supports “vaccine” mandates and martial law to attend their concerts. watching rage support companies like pfizer is a fukin joke. they became the machine.
@@mothiskobeni the problem is most democrats and republicans cant even imagine that there are MILLIONS of people who think both sides are disgusting. ergo, if someone critiques ratm for their support of bigpharma, they “must be a trumper”. your dogmatic view tells me that u never really understood their lyrics in the first place.
They were way ahead of their time. Zach's passion and conviction are infectious coupled with the drive of the music. If this doesn't make you feel something, something's wrong.
yes, they gained a christmas number 1 in the UK following an online campaign to stop Simon Cowell and his (then) latest X Factor winner from attaining the No 1 slot that they usually did at that time in the world. A great moment for music imo. So many great RATM songs i couldnt even start to suggest them to you, but they have reformed for a tour which is ongoing at the moment. Zack actually suffered a leg injury and instead of cancelling the tour/gigs he still performs, just from a seated position instead of his usual animated presentation. Also, so many people have heard RATM without knowing it, they provided the closing song during the credits for The Matrix (Wake up) and The Matrix: Reloaded (Calm like a bomb) and also a cover of one of their songs (wake up again i believe) by Brass against on the newest film
It's also a way to prove a point. That the underbelly of society at any moment could rise up and drive a spear through the heart of capitalism. The oppressed are truly massive and if we all just stand up for our principles, they dont stand a chance. The opressors fear that the most.
Thankyou Rebecca for reacting to this song by ratm I've listened to this since it was released way back when I was a sergeant in usaf , it still fires me up as oppression never ends, it's hot here in upstate new york and fans weren't cutting it so I bought a big ac for me and my kitty Sox, other songs you might like by ratm , bulls on parade, renegades of funk , Maggie's farm , I don't think they have love ballads in their catalog , I listen to other reactors but you're the best because you practice what you preach
I love that you’re actually paying attention to the lyrics, not just the performance. Another great reaction. Saw RATM in mid 90’s in high school. Just amazing
I just saw them in concert last week. He hurt his leg earlier in the tour and had to perform seated, but he still brings an amazing amount of intensity with every syllable.
Fun fact considering the fact that it is a protest song, "Killing in the Name" was released as the lead single from Rage Against the Machine in November 1992. It reached number 25 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2009, following a public campaign protesting the British talent show The X Factor, "Killing in the Name" became the UK Christmas number one.
Years ago at a bar with live music, this guy played guitar with random singers. He was a sick guitarist. This old lady started walking up with her oxygen tank. She took her oxygen off and sang this song. Every single part. The screaming part was particularly great since she had that raspy voice from cancer or whatever she had from smoking. She screamed loud as hell. Probably the best thing I’ve ever seen. I had it recorded on my flip phone and wish I still had it.
This is what I once sung to my ex when she told me not to have another scoop of ice cream. It was (mostly) a joke. It wasn't taken as a joke. Thanks for the reaction Rebecca, great to see you reacting to this banger of a classic. P.s. I didn't break up with her because of ice cream, although it was close.
I've seen them twice and the first time was at a small venue and the exact same stage diving thing happened like in the video. Some dude tried to get on stage to dive, security grabbed him and started swinging and Zack stepped in and told security to let the guy be....really cool. And Tom Morello is borderline God...
I thought you had quit making videos! Welcome back! Top 4 best reactors on RU-vid. It's you, the charismatic voice, d music life, and the trash talkers. More tool reactions please! I'll carry your babies!
Very happy to see you reacting to this one! It's a great song, one that I grew up listening to. I jammed out to this as a kid and it went wild with it! hahaha, I remember going wild as a boy! So damn fun! Even now, years later I still get amped up hearing this! It's just an everlasting fuel of a song! It's a banger that's worth listening to. Rage Against the Machine is an amazing band. :)
Know Your Enemy, and Renegades of Funk are two of my favorite songs by them, along with this one. It's sad that their music is even more relevant and necessary today than it was back then, because we didn't REALLY listen to it and let things get so, so, SO much worse :/
Oh wow. I can't wait to see you hear this!!!! I love Tom and the group. And their messages. So hyped! 10 minutes later... That was great! Everything about it. Love what it brought out in your personality. Not to mention those two accents I heard you use. Heh heh
@@rva you're always adorable. ☺👍 Oh! And you may be the only RU-vidr with a large channel that actually speaks to people. And yours is huge. So, much respect for that!
Wow. Also wow. And an additional Wow. I stumbled across your reaction to the KISS song, I STILL LOVE YOU. (Lead vocals Paul Stanley, not Gene Simmons) and I loved your analysis. Next I saw KILLING IN THE NAME OF. LOVE your thought things and your humour. Best RU-vid discovery ever?? Possibly. Thank you from Australia.
I love that Scott Naismith on the Piano there, it seems you have great taste not only in music but in visual arts as well. Oh, and i respectfully think that you are a very beautiful woman... although i think you already knew that, either way, it is nice to be reminded
I saw them back when this album came out at universal studios in studio city ampetheater. It was like a 9.5 earthquake hit the theater. The energy was out for f this world.
Hello my dear!! Sorry I'm late for our tea!! You should see 4th Impact's new original recently released on their RU-vid channel!!! I'm sorry I can't leave the link but the title is Tapat Sa'yo Visualizer It is a real heartbreaker and absolutely one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I had tears in my eyes before I even noticed the lyrics!!! Love you!!!!
When I was a sous chef in a restaurant in San Francisco, my chef walked in at 1:30 in the morning, this song was playing. She said “well, you listen to different music when closing than I do!”
there is always a band of each generation that will define the age where make the music, for me RATM is that beeing a child of the gen 76 , there will be bands of all ages trying to educate/rage 8) against the "normal" , and wake up said generation cause we are here , do what you/your heart feel like
Another great reaction!! Your take on this song has solidified you as one best people I’ve never met!! Your passion for music, regardless of the genre is incredibly refreshing!!! RATM is definitely one of my favorites and you nailed exactly where they are coming from!!👏👏
Great reaction. There's a deep dive into Rage that will give you plenty of thrills. Try "Bulls On Parade," "Down Rodeo," "Renegades Of Funk," or "Sleep Now In The Fire." Still as relevant today as 30 years ago.
Thank you Rebecca, you tapped into the energy and message effortlessly. Honestly RATM are my favourite band ever. Cant think of another band that played music like this where you can actually FEEL the anger of injustice exploding through the speakers. Please review a live version as the crowd just add to the whole experience ❤
Hi Rebecca. Just watched your review of this Rage Against The Machine song and as you and others have said it is definitely one of those you have to move to. As you know we have a radio station over here called BBC 5 Live which some would say is quite conservative, yet around 5 10yrs ago they had rage Against The Machine on live. Before their performance the host Nicky Campbell asked them not to sing the "sweary" bit at the end and surprise surprise they didn't do what they told them 😂 what was more surprising was that the BBC let them finish the whole song 😅
Excellent band/song choice Rebecca! And an awesome reaction from you as usual! RATM is definitely one-of-a-kind and has the grooves to make you move :) Speaking of moves... you've got some pretty wicked ones going on there yourself ;)
The Christmas No1 wasn't only not a pop song. It was also at the time a quite old song. The whole thing was a protest against overcommercialized music. I believe this was the song btw? I remember them being told to censor the last line when they got to play it live... which they obviously didn't
Design your Universe (live Retrospect) / Unleashed (live Retrospect ), Cry for the Moon(live Retrospect) - Epica Nightwish - 7 Days to the wolves (live) / Weak Fantasy (live) Soulbound - Unleash the Archers Take this Life - In Flames Burning Time (live) / Dracula - Iced Earth Reincarnate / Eternally Yours - Motionless In White Ategnatos / King - Eluveitie Rebel in the F.G.D. or The great Missconceptions of Me - W.A.S.P
The contrast between your reaction and this song is priceless ! You noticed Zak's articulation, yet you were very articulate in your analysis of this composition. Really love it! ❤️ (for reasons unexplained) I think they have a very deep understanding of dynamics. Yeah. The rhythm is SO tight! Yet funky. Yeah!👊👊👍 They also have all these rhythmic transitions, really beautiful stuff 😍. "Never stop singing " 😊 I love these guys. RATM, YEAH! I apologize, it's Zack, not Zak, my bad. You Brits are so undeniably hip and stiff at the same time. Really love it.
OOhh yes, their number 1 song was a massive move by fans, wanting to have something on the billboard that is not from Simon Cowell's production. So everyone started buying the song on itunes eventually getting them there. As a thank you, the band did an amazing free show!
You are so right, as soon as the music starts (I go cold) you cannot help but move. It was a privilege to see them in Glastonbury. My chest has never been thumped so hard by music before or after.
Hahahaha you're awesome. I listened to that record on repeat most of my freshman and sophomore year in high school EVERY DAMN DAY, and STILL can listen to it front to back now. Over and over and over and over and over... I hope when we're all gone the aliens find it, and about 7 other staples. Did the same to me then at 14 as it does to me now at 47. AMAZING.
They are touring in the U.S. this summer for the first time in 11 years.... at the first show Zach de la Rocha sprained his ankle and had to do the whole show sitting down..
The guitarist Tom Morello (also of Audioslave) was the most creative instrumentally, imho. There's a variety of sound between songs, while Zack is the same across all songs. Zack rages well, but without variety. But yeah, RATM has some amazing hits.
Morello is a guitar genius, musical genius, and genius person if we wanna dive into everything about him. Musical minds like his don’t come along very often
Hello Rrrrrrrrrrrrebecca nice to see another reaction from you. You look great, good to see you getting back to reactions. Hope to see more Dimash &So Hyang reactions from you
Rebecca, you were really getting into this song. If people saw me doing what you were doing while the song is being played, first I would hurt myself, and second they would put me away!
looking beautiful as per rrrrrrrrebecca, have a nose at their video "freedom",the end to it is a jawdropper and you'll see the whole meaning of zack's lyric "anger is a gift".it builds and on the fourth "freedom" you hear his voice falter with emotion, then you see an explosion of anger that epic it honestly chokes me.also for another amazing song "born of a broken man" as he lost his father through mental illness who went ultra religious and locked himself away, starving himself.pay attention to the lyrics as they're something else.have a nice day rrrrrrrebecca
The deal about them getting the #1 Christmas Song had to do getting back at Simon Cowell. Simon recorded a song with the winner of Britain's Got Talent and was sure he would have the #1 Christmas Song, but a couple started a grass roots deal on Facebook to get RATM the #1 Song even though this song came out around 1994. People across Britain started downloading this song and got RATM the #1 song and RATM went and played a free concert at a big park there in London. It was epic and Simon Cowell was not happy.
If this song doesn’t hit you like a great big foot in the face I don’t know! 💥BOOM💥 The crunchy chugging riffs! The lyrics and attitude! I’m 50 years old and I still want to jump up and down! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
ahhh rebecca, i love that you pretend you've never heard this track before....but given it was so huge when it went to christmas number one in the uk and was literally all over the national news for months....I call your bluff :p
React to flo summertime! Their a new girl group from the UK and their so talented vocals are insane ! They also have a couple live performances too showing of their vocals
