@@ChuckBeefOG you dont necessarily need to have tried heroin, i think its common knowledge that people do it once and keep doing it. Once you pop you cant stop lol
Actually Sober is about his addiction to alcohol and how it destroyed who he was and everyone around him. One reason why Maynard's music is soo good is because it comes from a real place. A place he relives every time he sings the song. You can see him shaking from alcohol poisoning as he sings this song. Thats what the vocal coach is missing. Its not just an act to him. Its part of his history. Every tool song has a meaning, some of them are just very personal to Maynard. H is another one...
I'm glad she liked it. Maynard has always been about emotion. He sings what matters to him, and IMO that peaked with aenemia. Undertow being a close second. Opiate was pretty obvious what it was about. Then Tool traveled into personal matters and immediately launched into the history books. The feeling in songs like Sober and H are so intense, and get even more intense when you know the background. But watching this, its obvious why tool toured a lot more with lateralus than the previous albums. That was much less personal. You can see maynard reliving his addiction on stage as he sung this. Powerful...
Better late than never, my friend. Not all the live shows were as great as the video critiqued here; Maynard James Keenan typically would play with his back to the audience, completely disengaged. Still unique as they would always have a live jam session, but still. Do not be sad you weren't around to catch them live (they don't tour anymore, and haven't for awhile). I can only be happy those 4 musicians found each other in this world and created their music. Enjoy my friend. Better late than never!!
@@youwish4555 not true. TOOL just finished a US tour in May and a European tour earlier this month. TOOL is also headlining Aftershock in October and they'll definitely be touring after the album releases.

@@davidsaunders3682this helps me with my recovery. I used to listen to it to help my anxiety. I hear the heartbeat in the song as well as hearing his vocals and lyrics. We all do it differently though. I wish you well in your journey.
Actuality, he's already possess by demons and is able to perform to our deprived and wrecked generation adequately by this demon enhancement. To give Maynard benefit of doubt, he may not even know this truth. Reality is, these are powerful principalities and evil realms; one that even satanism is aware of. Everyone with their "spectacular" ways. Rebecca is awesome with her Vocal Profession.
I don't believe this lady is a vocal coach. He voice makes me angry and irritated. She can't see he is forcing his way through stage fright. Social anxiety, it's a power testimat to his willpower and passion
Its basically his kind of stance for performances. If you think that's weird, watch him dance like that. In fact, there was a guy who went on stage once in the middle of a song, Maynard tackled him to the ground and held him there while singing. He went back and forth on him lol. Yeah he can be scary.
Yeah but all their songs seem to blur into one somehow, like, everything sounds the same :) which is good and bad at the same time, cause it almost sounds like they invented a genre and then let it slowly die :))))
My 'sis would literally drive her Honda civic from audurn AL to New Orleans just for tool when she was 19 (I think mostly just for Maynard though, LOL)
I’ve seen A Perfect Circle live and they were really good. I just didn’t like how Maynard is in the dark and at the back of the stage when I saw them. I would’ve liked to see him upfront like in this video.
He also has performance issues with big crowds...just look at his costumes at some shows. Look at how he crouches on stage like he is cornered. How he focuses on the music and conquers that fear every time. Legendary.
No, he doesn't have performance issues lol. He is portraying what he is trying to portray in his music. He is being a shadow of who he once was, a shell of a person. That is what this whole thing of sober is conceived off of, being sober and the addict, being beaten down by life. That's why he looks the way he does. Not only is he the best showman in the world, but he is trying to correlate the music.
@@hardtymz2517 why do you think he used to come out on stage in a dress, or dressed as a member of the blue man band.you listen to them for 5 minutes and you're an expert...
For the longest time, he wouldn't even look at the audience...he would be facing the side stage...how long you been listening? How many shows you go to?
I often wonder what it's like to be an artist of this caliber. To create something that is technically not alive that has the ability to stir up emotions and change people's lives forever.
I can confirm that Maynard has crippling stage fright, but there's also a big element of him wanting the performance to be about the music and not him. I saw them play live last year and you couldn't see him on the stage throughout 90% of the show. It didn't matter. The music, his voice, and the imagery they create for each song is more than enough to create an incredible experience that I won't ever forget. If you have the opportunity to see them live you absolutely have to do it.
He doesn't have stage fright. Early concerts he was in the front. The reason for him staying in the back is about sound. When he is back by danny, there is less bleed into the mic. Also its a polygon where all the band members can see each other while playing. He states while being in the front he feels like a clown.
That woudl explain a LOT. I have just seen him play a few weeks ago. He was on two stages flanking Danny Carey and rarely lit up, mostly silhouetted against the back images. His vocals were part of the total music. Absolutely stellar performance.
This song is so sad! My little brother died 3 years ago from snorting fentanyl.... So the song resonates very deeply for me! Please if you're addicted to opiates or any drugs seek help before it's too late. There's people that love you and care about you!!!
HOLY HELL!! TOOL!?!? You HAVE TO listen to Wings for Marie and 10000 Days! Its a 2 part song. About his mother! Incredible in every single way. Tool is an ENTIRE 'NOTHER LEVEL!
I discovered tool a couple of minutes ago by this particular video and I felt shivers down my spine. I'm speechless.. How can I miss this for so many years.. I see he is also in Puscifer and a perfect circle, which I both love, but his performance... Tool is something else
@@allikitos anything Maynard does is amazing. And hey least you found Tool now instead of later. There's a video on RU-vid that has every single tool song n album. Bout 6 hours plus worth of music. Very much worth the listen and familiarizing yourself with Tool's music ;)
Lol, it’s because he doesn’t see himself as a part of Tool so to speak, it’s about the music and not him. He’s completely front and centre in Puscifer and APC.
No no no. He does not have stage fright. Maynard has a condition where certain lights can cause him to pass out. He positions himself at the back because lights aren't as big a problem there. It's why at concerts in daylight with no lightshow, you will see him more up front because strobing lights aren't a problem there. For example, with Puscifer he's not "hiding" from the crowd at all. In dimly lit arenas with a light show, the visual effects team and Maynard have a signal worked out. If he is starting to feel dizzy from the lights, he moves his mic stand to a certain spot and the strobing lights are toned down until he moves the mic stand again.
True, the show i saw from them many song behind a curtain with animation( like a wall a driping blood were face appear and dissapear) laser light show to attrack attention and allow him to be himself

The amazing thing about tool is that when you return to a song after while, you realize new meaning and emotions within the music. You bring your new experiences, wins, and pain to the interpretation. Just amazing
@@namesurname7172 they didn't put an album out for 15 or so years. So yeah basically. Hopefully they'll make some more music. Most intense show I ever saw was 96 lalapalooza. Back when Korn thought they were cool. Korn played, they were decent. But then Tool came on and blew them out of the water. Not even remotely comparable. Same when I saw Ozzfest and Slipknot was just becoming popular. They thought they were cool. Pantera comes out and all hell broke loose. 60,000 people going apeshit. No band on this planet could top those two in their prime. All this radio rock today is weak as hell.
Yeah this was before he started hiding from the crowd. He said he used to just pick a single person in the crowd to sing to so he wouldn't be intimidated by the size of the crowd. He'd kind of get into a new character for every song and just pick someone to play for.
Me too, sometimes if the first 5 comments suck, I am out...I scroll down and figure if the comments su k the video Must too. I cant find one person that has a bad thing to say about Maynards voice, its like angry angels.
You can see the rapid progression of interest from getting into the groove by rocking with it, to repulsion upon seeing Maynard, to falling in love. All within 2 minutes
Fixed Error If you believed that why TF are you here supporting a RU-vidr who’s making a video about him and his band? I know I’m not gonna support any channel that’s talking up Kevin Spacey. That’s just creepy
I saw Tool live in the early 2000s and it was one of the single most intense experiences I've had in my life. Maynard's voice is strikingly beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Its like he is singing directly into your soul and your forced to feel these emotions that are stuffed into these lyrics. For those of us that have had the life experiences these lyrics cover in particular, its even more powerful because you understand how dark of a place this is really coming from. Losing the trust of those that love you. Feeling like you're nothing but trash and that your existence complicates the lives of those around you. Its powerful and sad truths spoken through this mans ability to convey the anguish, pain and anger of addiction.
I've been listening to tool since I was a child. Of course not grasping it all until I started getting older. I saw them for their fear innoculum release a couple years ago and let me tell you. What a show man, closest thing to a pink floyd light show ill ever get

When you said you were enjoying it but you were also slightly afraid...that’s Maynard in a nutshell lol he’s definitely unique and lives in his own musical world.
For sure. One of the best things about tool is the vocal mix with the rest of the music as if it's just another instrument rather than his voice being out in front... But the best part of tool is definitely one of the best drummers of all time
@@icedink87 his voice has always been a sound i felt deep in my bones. Ive always thought Tool should be listened to loudly with comeplete immersion in the sound.
Maynard James Keenan has grown since this 1990s concert. He was just a young man running around in an adult romper so people would have lowered expectations of him. Then they blew the doors off that stadium because they knew they were good. And to think Maynard was gonna go into country until the drummer, Danny, talked Maynard into singing progressive rock. The song is about the lure of insanity lurking in your mind, quenched only by inebriation. Not of drugs or alcohol, but of the knowledge of evil brought about by learning dark truths. Yeah. Ænima, their follow up album, expands on the concept more with songs like Eulogy and 46&2. Now, in his old age, Maynard has a vineyard and his own brand of wine. You should have a glass and listen to Tool’s newer stuff. I once saw them on tour in 2003 in DC. Indoor auditorium. There were fully-naked couples, covered in glitter, hanging from the rafters by their ankles, dancing like it was cirque du Soleil. There were 3D wireframe laser images on the roof. There was whale-song in the background. And Maynard speaks in that haunted voice, backed by the fire and rage of emotion over his mother, Judith, praying before dying after ten thousand days of agony at the hands of a terminal illness, and the hate and malice directed toward his father, a chicago faith minister... And in that haunting voice, he tells his 60,000 fans to question authority, seek reason, research truths, and become greater than ourselves. Meanwhile, he is wearing a thong. That’s it. He climbs up the massive 5 story drapes about 12 feet. The wireless pack of his In Ear Monitors are pulling on the back waistband of the thong, so you can see the crack of his backside. He drops down into a crouch like a possessed entity, with one hand on the floor between his ankles, and the other still clutching to his microphone. Then you realize that Audix OM2 was in his hand the entire time he climbed those drapes. The man doesn’t put on “a show.” He is creating •art.• No two ways about it. If I ever saw him on a street corner, I’d ask if he has any wine. And if he even so much as opened his mouth to reply, I would pivot and run away screaming in fear. Even though he’s pretty short, he packs a ton of charisma in a few baritone words. And, yeah, the guy’s voice sounds like finely aged whiskey poured from quality oak barrels. But I’d still run away in fear that I would be possessed by whatever beautiful minstrel of evil danced from that devious silver tongue he uses. Although, on his off days, I’m sure he’s just your Average well-read Joe with a Mensa-certified IQ and a big love for his mom.

That's an interesting view. I presumed he looked like a marionette. Symbolizing one's own lack of control over their life, whilst in thrall to addiction.
I'm glad someone who isn't really into rock/metal (I'm assuming, vocal coaches usually aren't) still admits Maynard's incredible control of his voice and just the amazing technique and goddamn, the range.
Watching it on MTV & VH1 I had to see more. The night I bought the CD my discman played that hidden track 1st, as I went to bed. I wondered what the hell I got myself into. Still turn it to 11 every time.
I usually laugh at people trying to figure out Tool & Maynard and I actually really respect her observations and the way she reacts to his performance is as genuine as the rest of us Tool listeners had experienced the first time! 🤘
Birdman 760 my generation of peers doesn’t really listen to tool, it’s sad. I was born in the late 90’s and I played some tool for them last week and they told me to play “rock that people know” I just looked at them and turned it up
It amazes me how 25+ years later, giants like Maynard James Keenan & Layne Staley still aren't universally recognized by music lovers everywhere-- regardless of genre --for their transcendent singing voices
Britton Thompson both of them SOOOO much better than Nirvana or Pearl Jam! Like them, but way overrated & imho greatly eclipses by AIC’s & Tool’s talent
Now...I love AiC but Layne gets too much of the credit that Jerry Cantrell deserves. Their unique blending of vocals is what set them apart from all the other 90s groups for me.
Have u guys ever tried singing a song on Kareoke you're totally unfamiliar with? It's like impossible and for him to see through the music and come up with those badass melodies is impressive. Not to mention the fucking lyrics. Every member of Tool makes Tool what it is. This isn't one of those bands where fans only know the lead singer. Anyway, I'm just saying I don't think Maynard's contribution should be downplayed.
Michael Winsor But I think it‘s beautiful how everyone else gets to shine. Often times the vocals are overbearing and take away from instrumentals but not with Tool. Everything fits just perfectly.
Love this performance. It's the first live performance of theirs I ever watched. Maynard's mannerisms on stage are truly one of a kind. It isn't about being perfect for him. It's about transmitting raw emotion. His screams epitomize that and are the stuff of legend. I enjoyed your take on this performance as always I do. 😊👏❤
I just told a Friar Tuck joke yesterday and here you are with your hilarious comment. I was thinking the same thing! That ain't no accident that this is so captivating.
This wonderful lady, Rebecca has just figured out what all Tool fans have known since the beginning. You don't just listen to Tool, you experience Tool! There's a reason why they cannot be categorized in any one genre of music because they pretty much embody music itself. Undertow is one of my favorite albums, and one of their best works in a library of near-perfection from start to end.
I like Tool, don’t get me wrong, but they can definitely be categorized. Maynard has an incredible voice and the drums are absolutely insane. However, nothing too difficult with the bass or guitars. And that doesn’t mean they aren’t good. I imagine the hardest part for them is knowing where they are in those long ass songs! Lol
