Sabaton speciality is songs on military history. They never take sides and never glorify war, on the contrary. They tell stories of what goes on in the different wars from the perspective of individuals fighting in them. Thus they can sing about German stormtroopers, Polish resistance, American Marines or a Canadian scout in the trenches as well as Swedish Carolingian soldiers from 1700hundreds. The soldiers you see here marching down Birmingham streets are representatives of various Sabaton songs back to Sparta and the battle of Bannockburn in Scotland. They called for fans of Birmingham metal music to march with them down the street together with the surviving members of Motörhead, carrying the photo of the author Lemmy Kilminster who wrote it. Any small detail is meticulously planned from the bus to Hammersmith in the intro, a nod to the Motörhead album No sleep until Hammersmith, to the abandoned car in the street, to remind of the murder of archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914.

[I hope you'll forgive a pasted comment, it took me a while to write the first time.] I saw Sabaton perform this live in Leeds on the first night of the current tour, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only _14_ when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was being treated there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Greetings from South Yorkshire - Lest We Forget.

Your comment about memorials was also perfect- Sabaton have been accused in the past of glorifying war, but all they the glorify are the men and women who fought and fell, regardless of who or what they were fighting for.

Let me add my two cents to this topic. As a german in 2023 I can say - with all of my heart - that there's nothing, absolutely NOTHING that will ever justify the waste of all these lives. Mankind lives on this world for not even the blink of an eye comparing to this planets history and yet we still aren't able to learn from our mistakes. Most intelligent species of the world... yeah, for sure. A war will not solve anything. A war will cause all the reasons for the next war. I'm afraid humanity is doomed to parrish because of our incapability to grasp this simple truth. Some might say that's for the better because Mother Earth sure as hell won't shed a single tear if we just wipe ourselves out.

They have so many great songs, as people already pointed out they're all about historical stuff. Really moving songs are also The Price of a Mile, The Final Solution or a Lifetime of War. Songs on the more badass side are Bismarck or To Hell and Back if you wanted to check out more of their stuff 😊 they even have a history channel where they talk about the historical events behind their songs.

Sabaton uses historical themes to highlight and honor the sacrifice, courage, and humanity of groups and individuals who rise above the horrors of the cauldron of war to perform incredible feats. They do not glorify war or take sides, they just tell the tales that need to be remembered.

💯 and no matter what country they were from. They even highlight about the equipment used, from winged hussars to bismark & beyond. I giggle every time when I imagine the enemies horses rearing, bucking, stampeding, in spooked terror. Riders falling off or flying through the air, etc as the light calvary charged at them.

Dear Mr. Lavigne, the singer of Sabaton, Joakim Broden, did a song and video with italian fun metal band Nanowar of Steel some time ago that is called "Pasadena 1994" about the Fifa world cup. Maybe you would like to watch that? It is a totally different side of Mr. Broden, plus some very italian look at the importance of football (soccer) for Europeans. :D

Thank you Mr. Lavigne for a heartfelt reaction to a great cover by Sabaton - there's so much more here and in recent songs in general than there was in most of Sabaton's earlier songs. And that´s where my obligatory mention of a cool and more than just a little creepy detail for those who know comes in: Around the middle of the video the crowd/parade comes across a lovely early 20th century ecru-coloured convertible that's standing abandoned in the middle of the street. This is the car that Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his (morganatic) wife Sophie Chotek, Duchess of Hohenberg bled to death in on the 28th of June 1914 in Sarajevo, touching off *The Seminal Tragedy* , properly known as *The July Crisis,* which then obviously led to *The Great War* , sometimes and with good reason referred to as *The Apocalypse of the Old World.* This one empty car in a very real sense is the Pale Horse Conquest rode in on with War and Pestilence and Hunger in it's train. And it's the reason this car is in one of the final shots of the video. I also feel it's a signifier of the level of knowledge that Sabaton by now have reached in dealing with historical matters (certainly some influence by historian Indy Neidell who's working with them on the "Sabaton history" episodes and did a huge week by week documentary on the Great War), especially when compared to their initial albums. On a related note - in Tolkien's masterpiece the Hobbits are very much a representation of the "Pals Battalions" who bore the brunt of "The First Day of the Somme" and about whom this song is. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Ken, a heartfelt reaction that was worth watching regardless of how many times I have watched this vid. We need to be reminded in this way- through music, storytelling and videos- to honour those who fought, the devastation of war, and to remember our humanity. And this is in no way to take away from the sacrifice of the British soldiers honoured in this song and how my heart breaks for them and their families; as a Canadian, I want to mention the Newfoundland regiment that followed in the 3rd wave of attacks on that day. Again, a regiment made up mostly of volunteers. They were stationed near Beaumont Hame, and most were killed or wounded before they even made it to No Man's Land. This battle is also forever seared into the cultural memory of the Newfoundland and Labrador people. Of the Newfoundland Regiment, only 68 men were left standing, with more than 700 killed, wounded or missing. As it was for the towns in northern Lancashire and southern Yorkshire, an entire generation was lost.

As a Canadian, I am going to assume that you commemorate Remembrance Day (Nov 11). Down here in the uppity colonies, we call that day Veterans Day, a day to honor all the men and women who have served their country. We also have another day toward the end of May called Memorial Day. This day, we use to remember all those who remain on active duty... ... forever. If you're of a mind to, please consider reacting to the song "Arlington" by country music singer Trace Adkins. Not only is the song appropriate for that day, but I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised by Trace's voice. . Carry on.

Civilians being handed a weapon, often with no training, is a very old story, unfortunately; few wars were short enough to be won by what 'experienced' standing army a country can maintain in peace. To stay in the theme, you can listen to the English (there is also a Swedish one, whose words are different if you translate them) of En livstid i krig. About a 30y long meatgrinder across europe in the 16 hundreds, very much about civilians ripped from home and sent to die. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-plEiIPmTRUo.html (to be fair sabaton also have songs that are less bone-chilling while still pointing out the stupidity and cruelty of war)

For Canadians, the Battle of the Somme took a huge toll on the Newfoundland population. The battle of Beaumont Hamel destroyed a generation of young men. One hundred and 8 years latter in the province there is still a sense of this huge loss. One can see this in the emotional response to the return of the body of an unknown soldier from this battle to his home land in 2024. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3S-hTXEGhrY.htmlsi=KJUtfoQT32s6oZts. 2:19 the generals on both sides had to relocate their troops because their troops refused to kill their new friends that were supposed to be their enemies, but once they knew who they were made and taught to hate was simple propaganda and lies they never wanted to fight again. But of course when moved to a different area they had too or they’d be punished . Very very sad, they still had the little gifts from the Christmas truce too the chocolate, cigarettes, bread , or paper with a home address as one would give so they could meet afterwards either Germany or Britain whichever either would choose

those who glorify war have an agenda, Sabaton videos are often celebrations of the sacrifices and heroics of the SOLDIERS doing their best, this means that they praise them, but at the same time show the horrors of war, like here. You should watch "En livstid I krig" live from Göteborg Sweden , it is in Swedish but there are subtitles, it is about the thoughts and feelings of a young man going to war (30 years war) , it is more or less valid for sny war throughout history

It's still such a sad thing to me that in the US, sending young kids into the military is seen as an acceptable way to pay for schooling, or to get a job, or be able to afford simply just living. It's terrible that there are people who enlisted because of reason like that and have to deal with stuff like Gulf War Poisoning, PTSD, Disabilities, and other sicknesses because they, when they just became adults, had no other options, not because of a lack of trying, but because the US has such a predatorial economy that makes it hard to do anything without having the right prior connections and if I can recommend another Sabaton song, I'd recommend either No Bullets Fly, Far From the Fame, Father, Price of a Mile, or Inmate 4859
