Arirang is a song every Korean knows from birth. There are many many different arrangements, but each one taps into struggle and overcoming them.

Imho, the best songs of Sohyang are in the King of Mask Singers series. Those are safe from copyright issues.

Sometimes when I see those really mean spirited comments about this wonderful, generous hearted woman who sings to bring solace and hope to others, I feel really ashamed for them. It's like watching someone kick a little puppy

The initial major key section in 3 represents traditional unified Korea; the modulation to relative minor is the beginning of the "troubles" between North and South; the crazy chaotic section is the Korean War; the reprise of "traditional" major key Arirang in gospel 4/4 triplet waltz is the plea to God for reunification, and the final modern/jazz inflected reprise represents the future of unified Korea, of which Arirang is the unofficial national anthem.

This performance is a vocal and technical masterpiece.. She is THE master..

Arirang hill means Korean' sadness pain or supperssing etc. For about 5000years, Korea is invaded from china or japan etc. About a thousand time. Because we are not strong. Her song Dear Love from Masked Singer and You Raised me Up are the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear, really she is amazing... I just watched a show of her teaching a kid how to belt You Raised me Up, the little girl was having a competition and she was really nervous and she surprised her and took her to a studio and taught her there and made her feel so at ease, I watch it and try to follow along, I mean who better teacher than a master like her.

Just a bit more context for anyone who stumbles across this (since the video is a month old IDK if Sam will see this but it's interesting for anyone haha): - 'Arirang' is a type of Korean folk song, there are something like ~60 versions with like 3,000(?) variations, from the different regions of Korea. The most famous arirang is "Bonjo Arirang (본조아리랑)" aka "Standard Arirang." All Arirangs have the same refrain of "Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo." - Arirang is basically the unofficial national anthem of Korea, hence why literally everyone in the audience knew it and was singing along at the refrain. If you play Arirang, literally every Korean will know it and likely sing along haha - Most Arirangs are from a few hundred years ago, but they became especially significant to the Korean people while under Japanese rule - Arirang came to symbolize Korean national identity. - This particular Arirang, Arirang Alone, is far more recent than most and references the pain of separation between the two halves of the Korean peninsula. When Korea separated, many, many Koreans were forever separated from their family. - It also references specifically the island of Dokdo, which Japan and Korea have been in dispute over for a few hundred years.

Wow. Just wow. That was an emotional rollercoaster even before I read the comments about what it meant. I see Sohyang as traditional Korea and the violinist as modern Korea peforming an allegory about tragedy, rebirth, and hope.

I know what the song is about, but not the actual history of it, so I will try my best from just MY onion as tyo what happens. This dong is about the divide of North and South Korea, and the hopes to one day become one again. So... I do not know Korean at all, but from what you called that thunder cloud part, I would assume that was the break of what was once ONE Korean country into TWO, North and South, and then the hopes to one day be one again. This is the best way I know to explain it. GREAT reaction. There are many really good and great singers out there, but... This woman... her flawless technique, and her range, and how she can go from belting to a near whisper, but never lose that note, with her masterful control, to me... Sohyang is the best female VOCALIST on the planet.

She’s from the small Faroe island and when she gives a performance virtually the whole island of about 600 show up. She has an angelic voice so unique , so mystical , so magical, so entrancing so hauntingly beautiful that if you ( or your subscribers) react ( no one will recommend her so I hope you will react privately ) to the following 5 performances after which you will probably become a fan and want to subscribe to her website where she will inspire you with about 40 more songs ( a mixture of live, Audio, and MV’s ) Please RU-vid the following 5 live performances ( first 3 from her small island, 4th live from Los Angeles and the last in front of thousands with full orchestra performing for the Queen!). “Eivor palsdottir trollabundin” ( first vid 5:44). It’s on the island but inside I believe a restaurant seating capacity ( when the camera panned the audience) probably 300 lucky lucky souls to witnessed this beyond amazing performance. She put it on RU-vid about 3 years ago and very few views and likes. If she performed it in America and there were 50,000 in attendance , all 50,000 would be screaming and yelling for a long time during and after the performance. The strobe lightening, camera angles, her otherworldly vocal all combine to make this rendition memorable. At the end she hits a phrase that is so celestial so mystical so heavenly that even the great Park Hyoshin couldn’t execute with the emotional impact and purity that Eivor does. And a band member on drums was really into it! is a sight to behold. Watch the drummer go crazzzyyy. “Evior sofar True love” ( 5:18 duration) she performed this several times but my recommended version is otherworldly and she hits high notes that Dimash may not be able to reach with pure ecstasy. ~ Excuse my excitement but whenever I discover an amazing vocalist I can’t control my emotions. When I first discovered Morissette, Daryl Ong, Dimash, ( best pop-op vocalist in the world), Diana Ankudinova, , Park Hyoshin ( best ballad vocalist in the world) , Park Ki Young ( one of the best female vocalists.. as good as or better than So Hyang ), Forestella ( best crossover male vocal harmony group in the world). Lara Fabian... Now for one more Eivor ( the only one I know with a full orchestra :) RU-vid “Evior may it be “ ( Lord of the Rings) in a palatial setting in front of thousands with full orchestra and the Queen of Denmark!! Her closest and best friend Park Ki Young has about the same vocal range but is a tad more versatile because she can belt them with equal emotional impact and power in rock, pop, soul, jazz and classical ( opera).
