Angelina has had what the industry calls "A SiGNATURE VOICE" even at the age of 7. For me, as soon as I hear the first few words of a signature voice, I know who I am experiencing, but AJ voice is like nothing I have experienced in the past of my 75 years, she has the ultimate signature voice.

I’ve seen several reactions to these two versions. It’s a dilemma for me because I have loved the 10 year old Angelina version for years and years. It’s stunning to see such a sensitive, but beautifully musical, take from a child. She is sitting on her sofa, singing her heart out in one glorious take-with nuance, phrasing, and power coming together. Sure, her voice is not as powerful and versatile as Angelina today, but really, nobody can match Angelina’s vocal tools today. Her current version is mesmerizing. I think that now Angelina decides how she wants to present her version of a song, and she doesn’t ever worry about whether she can deliver what she has in mind. So we get an incredible array of color, range, texture, fry, phrasing, and other vocal dynamics that she can combine so effortlessly to create a gorgeous presentation that still keeps that retro vibe. This current version is a vocal masterpiece, but I am captivated by the emotion in her earlier version.

I just love the way you describe her skills and talent and appreciate the genius of this amazing girl.

Thanks hun. I KNEW you would love (and nail) this comparison reaction. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. No one I know of does a better job of pointing out all the nuances in her voice, and in this particular reaction, also her differences and similarities, though 6 years apart. I really think that she did an extraordinary good job at 10, I have to say. This was uploaded in February and she turned 10 on January 10th, so there is a fair chance that she was still 9 when she recorded it. At any rate we're witnessing a VERY young 10 year old here. The same can be said about her age in the last one; she may very well have been 15 at the time of recording, Not anywhere close to 17 at least. I know that what I just said is not very important, but at least to me, it's still worth making note of. 1 year is a whole lot of potential development, at least in HER development speed 😉 Another thing I really liked in this one is that you didn't utter a single word about her looks. We can all see that she is very beautiful, and in a MUSIC reaction/breakdown video like this, her looks is very much secondary. Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥

You didn’t mention that she was singing in a lower key as a ten year old. Also, did you notice that at ten she was already changing the sound “a” into an “e” at the ends of words and is still doing it today? Also, both of these were Valentine “gifts” to her audience. I felt that she used almost all her tools in her toolbox for this latest version, as if she wanted to incorporate most of her abilities for us with this gift. Also, did you notice that at ten she pronounced the word Valentine as ValentiMe? I thought that was so cute because my kids used to pronounce it like that also! You did a great job here with your reaction. There are other songs she has performed more than once in her career at different ages that hopefully you will cover and compare as well.

No matter how long you make your Angelina reaction videos, the Angels will watch to the end. (Stopping is sacrilege.) A guitar musician with many Angelina reaction videos recently commented that RU-vid analytics reported to him that Angelina’s fans are the most patient of all artists he reviews (they hang around longer than any others). Another reactor held a livestream recently, and Angelina’s fans stayed with him for 9-1/2 hours.

Oh my goodness Bethany, that was simply one of the best ever reaction/analysis I have ever seen when comparing these two versions that Angelina performed. And no, that was not to long, would have been here for another 10 minutes listening to you. The 10 year old version by Angelina always gets me in the tear ducts with the amount of feeling and emotion she gives you and the difference between her speaking voice and her singing voice, remarkable. All that I can say about the 16 year old rendition that she gifted us is that I have been listening to this song for over 60 years and her rendition is simply the best I have ever heard in my lifetime. This is my 137th time listening to this MASTERPIECE and each time I experience a new level of perfection by our ethereal prodigy extraordinaire, Angelina Jordan. When you listen to the A cappella portions of this performance at the very end of the song you are truly experiencing the genius of Angelina Jordan’s PERFECT PITCH. Sinatra, rest in peace Angelina Jordan, the Bare Foot Queen has taken the crown and there is nothing like her in the universe. When I first heard her perform this. I put it on pause and brought up Sinatra, Bublé, Streisand, Fitzgerald and Vaughan's version of this song to compare it to AJ version, and none of them moved me like this version. It is so hard to comprehend that Angelina from 7 to 16 is the greatest story telling being in my 75 years of experiencing great vocalist and I can't wait for the rest of the story. We are not only hearing it, but we are also feeling each word as though she were singing to each of us individually. She is the only one in this universe that is capable of making us feel the true emotion of this ballad. There is no way to explain this gift that has been given to the universe, does she even know, or understand the power she encompasses?

One of the record companies has already signed her. Her career is going to tops. Her talent is amazing.

The first one is so sweet and endearing and you can see 10 year old Angelina throwing in all she has. In the second one you only hear her sing and it is incredibly beautiful. 16 year old Angelina slips and slides from note to note, plays with rhythm and pauses and uses her voice in so many ways. She shows so much growth and shows how her voice is maturing. She has a threefold way of warping time: - First of all she makes us forget about time for a little while. - The second way is that she takes us back in time to let us experience music as it was sung back than. - The third way is that takes classic epic songs and brings them in to modern times. In both versions she uses the first way and makes me forget about time. In the first version she uses the second way as well and takes us back in time 50 years and let’s us experience the way this song was back than. In the second version she uses the third way and brings this song to modern times and breathes new life in it. She is growing into her own voice and art. I prefer the new version as it touches me more emotionally, but again both are beautiful.

Bethany, I want to be very honest with you and tell you I was glued to my seat for 26:42 listening to your beautiful IN DEPTH analysis of these two incredibly fantastic video's of Angelina singing 'My Funny Valentine'. The name of the game is always how genuine someone is. Angelina is always genuine. She finds the love in every song she sings and we can hear it in her voice and feel it in our hearts. Bethany, your ":performance" was so genuine, so intelligent, so romantic, I literally fell in love with you during the video. No lie! Back to Angelina! 🙂 When push comes to shove I will always admit I prefer to listen and see her sing this at 10. Of course, the 16 year old performance is, let's say, 'sensational', and I appreciate how she incorporated her creativity and stylish runs into the song, attributes she is already famous for at 16. The 10 year old version introduces us to a beautiful child sounding very much like a happy 10 year old and then, like magic we begin to listen to a voice which stuns us and to say she captivates us is the understatement of the Century! She's so comfortable sitting in that chair singing for us, with so much confidence and poise we can't believe what we are seeing with our eyes. You took over from there are told us what was going on and then, when the final chorus starts, OMG, just thinking about it is making me start to tear up. And, as if she knew we wanted to hear it again, she did the chorus again and, to me, I might be wrong but I felt she actually put even more feeling into it the second time. And, how does this incredible performance end? Naturally, she reverts back to the sweet 10 year old child, makes a heart with her hands, smiles and says, "Bye!" Of course, by this time I am emotionally spent. The first time I heard the young version I got up out of my chair, walked around a bit and wanted to sit back down and play it again. But, I couldn't. I had to wait till I regained my composure. Was what I just saw and heard real!? I've since seen the video well over 100 times (200-300 hundred?) and I will never tire of watching it. Our tiny little girl with the grownup voice will be 17 on Jan. 10, 23 and is now 6'1" tall and could be a super model, but I hope the major portion of her career will dedicated to her music and taking the world to a better place. I don't think she even realizes this power she holds over us and need to hear that signature voice to fill that empty void within all of us.

I'm so glad you did a comparison of this developing young artist. As always, your analysis is so informative. Legendary drummer, Johnathan Moffett of Republic Records, told her in a video that she is going to be the next big star like Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. Angelina signed with them at age 13 and she has released several covers and original music she has penned. We are expecting an album soon. She has two great covers of I Have Nothing, one live from July in Norway and a proper video, both from this year. You should react to some of her original songs, Seventh Heaven and A Million Miles are great examples of her songwriting talent. Her styling covers of Stay (Rhianna) and All of Me (John Legend) are even better than the originals, in my opinion.

Recently I was listening to Angelina's 2017 Proysenfestivalen performance of "Cry Me a River" an fell down a rabbit hole that took me to Macy Grey. What a treat.

In case no one's pointed you to it, there's a video of her rehearsing this song with a band at a consumer goods industry event (whatever…) when she was 8 (about 15 months before the video from February 2016 that you watched here). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BrsKksdUMNc.html They do two partial takes of just the opening of the song, then two full takes. (She also performed "At Last" at the same event, and the rehearsals for that one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VU_dbECo_5g.html are even more illuminating, IMO, as each subsequent take features slower and "less busy" instrumental accompaniment - no doubt at the request of Angelina herself [smash-cuts prevent us from seeing what happened between the takes, but she definitely does not look happy with the musical arrangement in the first take].) And my favorite of her performances of this song is from almost exactly midway between her renditions at 8 and 10, when she sang it live at a summer "garden concert" at an HIV support center in Oslo, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EFu4_cpY858.html accompanied by a saxophonist and a pianist who literally wrote a dissertation on musical improvisation (some people think he went overboard, but to my ears he did _exactly_ what he was hired to do: take the piano part into "agressively improvisational" territory while never losing track of what Angelina was doing).

Now She is a young lady with so much soulful power in her voice that it's hard to compare her voice from then to now. The older rendition is a copy of Alice Fredenham version of the song...!!!! A sexy version that a 10 year should not be singing.... CHECK OUT ALICE'S 2013 RENDITION....

And she slipped in one of her sneaky vibratos on the second half of the word "mouth". That is the sort of thing she has been doing since the beginning. She wows everyone with the bigger parts of her singing but when you hear again and again, you start to notice these "stealth" wows.

We all love your intricate analysis and your unbounded delight and joy and what she does. Most of us can only delight in the performance without actually knowing technically the intricacies of what she is doing... A little like being a customer in the worlds finest restaurant versus being a chef eating there and knowing how what they are consuming was produced (and the effort that goes into producing it).

AJ stirs your innermost deepest emotion with each, and every performance. The tears, the shortness of breath, she evokes continually are beyond comprehension.

Great analysis. I think the early version is not only my favorite of the two but is so much better than the latter version. What the first performance may lack in vocal technique is more than made up for by the sheer emotional drive in her delivery. I think brave is the adjective that always comes to mind when I hear her young performances. She doesn't seem to hold anything back in the earlier version. She knows where she wants to go and doesn't worry about technique. She climbs inside the song and lets the brilliance of it shine through. These songs were written by the geniuses of the American songbook and the great singers all know (young Angelina included) that if you dig deep into this material it will shine like the diamond that it is. Kudos to Richard Rodgers for the melody and Larry Hart for the lyrics. These two are giants of American music and Angelina does them proud with this young version of their masterpiece. Rodgers was also the creator of the timeless standard Some Enchanted Evening which Andrew Lloyd Weber called the best song ever written from any American musical. I like to think that Richard Rodgers would be partial to the earlier version because it perfectly captures the intent of its creator IMHO. The later version is very elegant, but it seems a bit too polished for my taste. The technique is there but the raw emotion is missing. I think the first version is just a once in a lifetime performance, like Judy Garlsnd's version of Over The Rainbow in The Wizard Of Oz. Only time will tell if I'm right.

When I hear my funny valentine, I think of Alice Fredenham's version. She absolutely owned it. No disrespect to Miss Jordan.

For me the 2022 version is as Kenta states the most beautiful version of that song ever and makes me really emotional listening to it every time. There are plenty of videos from love recordings from her summer concerts in Norway this year ( which I was fortunate enough to go and attend ) and I can tell you, listening live to her was even more incredible than I ever imagined. What fascinates me about comparisons like this is not primarily how Angelina's voice has developed. It's that it shows how even at a very young age Angelina knew exactly how she wanted to perform a certain song even though her voice wasn't developed enough to accomplish everything she wanted. It's also exciting when you realize that even though she's incredibly good today, we have to wait nearly ten more years before we know what she's really capable of doing with her voice.

Angelina's 10 year old version once again left me in a puddle on the floor. So much emotion, putting everything into it for her fans including the intro. At 16, her voice is so polished and soaring that it sounds to me like a vinyl recording on an old Victrola. Absolutely beautiful! In the end though, the 10 year old performance from her living room remains my fave for its emotional tug. Have a great day!

Thank you so much for such a GREAT reaction to this comparison of Angelina's development, both at barely 10 and at barely 16! She's always experimented with her voice and as many different vocal techniques as she could learn, yet I have never heard her once OVER-sing any song! I would think that it's tempting, especially for young singers who learn something new, to simply go crazy over this new ability, but not Angelina. If you want to hear her singing a different genre's you should try "I'm still holding out for you" when she was 10 years old. Many of us Angels fan thinks this is one of her best ever.

I could see the disappointment in your face when you realized you weren't going to see her actually singing the 2022 version. I felt the same when I first watched that video. I hope she doesn't choose to do that again. Even if it is a voice-over of a performance, I would prefer it to the format she did in that version. But what I love more than any of that, is her willingness to experiment with her voice and artistic expression, displaying it to the public, regardless of how it may be received.
