I've seen many reactions to this black and white video but your breakdown of this performance is by far the best one. The references to other artists and genres in order to highlight a tone or a technique is also quite insightful. And what I loved most about this video, you didn't think of this cover as one of those funny viral hits with a cute child in it, but you took this performance by 9 year old Angelina very seriously and took her for a true artist despite her age! Your in-depth analysis is appreciated by many Angelina fans who believe in her talent, capabilities and potential, especially coming from a vocal coach. You can count me as a new subscriber.
Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing! I agree, to me she definitely is an artist that is to be taken very seriously. I think we'll hear many great things of her in the future!
Great, thanks! She and Jess took their cues from the original, Screaming Jay Hawkins... Barefoot to call attention to needs of children around the world. Met a girl on the street with no shoes, weighing people for money...AJ gave the girl her shoes and vowed to never wear shoes when performing until all children have shoes. Has raised and donated millions to charity & environmental causes. Wrote a book, "Between Two Hearts" about meeting the girl.
And that’s the reason for her being barefoot not because some other artist did so. Thank you for bringing that point out. She has all the elements that were in the original as written. Love it. 🌸
Awesome reaction and analysis, Andreas!! I had been waiting for your return after your reaction to Angelina singing "Bohemian Rhapsody". I watched that reaction a few times as there was much to digest just as with this one. I highly recommend all angels (fans) to watch that first reaction. I greatly look forward to your next reaction to my all time favorite musical artist. My recommendation for your next reaction would be Angelina's audition for Norway's Got Talent covering Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday". Angelina has said if it wasn't for her unconditional love for Billie's music, there would not be the Angelina we know today.
Very didactic, one of the best I've seen. I think Joss and Angelina had the same influence on this song. If you follow Angelina's journey, you will find multiple influences, enormous ability to make each note important, through an arsenal of knowledge, intuition and intention!! She is very smart in every way. Your knowledge and commitment to these reactions are very important to fans.
This is one of the better reactions and critiques of Angelina Jordan I’ve seen, you are very observant and did a good job, however I disagree with you on one point. When you said she went back to her little girl voice, I don’t think she went totally back to her little girl voice and I think she was right where she wanted to be with her sound, but that’s just my opinion, anyway good job I enjoyed it.👍 I think I will subscribe to your channel.
Thanks, would love to have you as a subscriber. The "little girl voice" was just an analogy I used to point out that she stopped making the adjustment that caused her voice to darken (lower larynx, raised soft palate) and went back to what her voice without that would sound like. It was still a great sound, just not what we heard for the biggest part of the rest of the song.
Have you watched My Funny Valentine yet? It is especially interesting to watch her 10-year-old version and compare it to her recent 16-year-old version. Both of them are uniquely “Angelina”! Really enjoyed your analysis of this super popular version by Angelina. Did you know her real last name is “Astar”? How prophetic is that?
I'm thinking that I've just seen a reactor who taught me a lot about the different parts of this outstanding performance by a tiny nine year old Norwegian girl. Angelina put a spell on me the first time that I experienced this historically important Jazz interpretation. And you Sir, got a new subscriber right now.
This is really what I am looking for in a reaction video - not just "oh boy, that was good!" but explanations of why it was good, what worked (and what maybe didn't). I shall definitely be watching more of your Angelina reactions. May I recommend Every Time We Say Goodbye and Song For A - both a complete contrast to 'Spell'.
Thank you Andreas for your very informative analysis of this performance by Angelina Jordan. I really enjoyed it. Angelina performed this song publicly several times after this performance, however probably on the advice of her vocal coach she toned it down in order not to damage her still developing vocal cords. Here is a link to her performance of this song 2 years later on the German TV show “Little Big Stars” hosted by Thomas Gottchalk. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qrZLjJ3VBZg.html . I would love to hear your your comparison of the two performances. Thank you again and keep up the good work.
Excellent reaction/analysis, especially the way you incorporated other artists. Already subscribed for your 1st reaction to AJ & I look forward to the next one.
It’s nice to see a reaction, with props for Joss Stone, who is incredible. Angelina is other worldly, and will go down as one of the greats of all time. Just subscribed. Best wishes
Absolutely awesome reaction\analysis 😁 Love how you picked up on all the nuances in this performance, and your edits are just brilliant! Thank you so much for making and sharing this 💖
Thank you for one of the very best analysis of this performance by any Reactor. As you noted, she was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video, did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the music director, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. Then a brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, a well known and respected Iranian artist, who is also Angelina's maternal grandmother and the person who encouraged Angelina in her love of music, especially jazz. And then there is a shot of Angelina holding a candle, upon which was an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Lastly, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing. From the time I first heard Angelina, way back at her first audition on Norway's Got Talent, she has amazed me.
I won't repeat everyone below, but I agree that this is an amazing form of reaction. I really appreciate you editing in the singers you think of when you hear Angelina. I know it's a lot of work. Your knowledge and insights distinguish you among reactors, in general, although some have done some very technical analyses. I really enjoyed it. My favorite "young" performance of Angelina's is her version of Summertime, for the finals of Norway's Got Talent. I think you'd see a lot of development from "Gloomy Sunday", her audition, to Summertime. She started the competition at 7 years old, and finished at age 8.
Amen to all of this - your reactions are DEFINITELY among the very most interesting, insightful, and enjoyable! I also agree about her performance of "Summertime" on the "Norway's Got Talent" show, along with "What a Difference a Day Makes" at an outdoor concert at the same age - those show growth and are a "don't-miss" performances! They showcase her Jazz roots, and her growth as a vocalist and artist - at Age 8! I hope you'll review those performances!
Wonderful reaction Andreas. Great comments. This song here by a 9 year old child launched a lot of us Angel fans down the Angelina rabbit hole. Would love to see more reactions and comments from you for the Angel child prodigy/music genius.
Your analysis was much more fruitful and rich than the analysis of any other vocal coach that deconstructed this performance. Many actually had a good laugh at it more than anything else. So thank you very much for that. I found the ending of the song more similar to what the french singer Edith Piaf used to do. Note that I'm not very familiar with Faouzia, although her name suggests she is from an Arab country, just like me.
You mentioned the arabic influence at the end. I have noticed/ commented it somewhere my self. So I can only agree. Please don't stop reacting to this musical genius!🇸🇪😁
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video. What triggered that vibe of Arabian music with me was the fast melisma and the melodic line. You should check out Faouzia. She is amazing, in particular her cover version of "Desert Rose" by Sting. Yes, the ending, in particular the last line was certainly similar to Edith Piaf.
@David Hooks Faouzia is amazing. She is like a fresh breeze in the music industry. I hope she'll keep those trill/melisma elements in her singing as she becomes more well known in the mainstream.
Brilliant reaction, really loved your professional approach to such an amazing artist. There are so many other brilliant tracks , I would say " Still holding out for you " or I would rather go blind " would warrant your unique breakdown.
Good review you get it just how good she is. No offense but I see negative views and from other reviewer’s listening to Angelina I always wondered is it thumbs down for the artist or the reviewer how can you put a thumbs down for Angelina don’t understand
Thank you very much! Well, apparently there are dislikes on nearly video on RU-vid regardless of how good a singer is. Some people just don't like it or have had a bad day and need to vent their anger somehow. However, Angelina is amazing and she has a great career ahead.
Wow. This is clearly one of the best reactions / analyses of “I Put a Spell on You” (by Angelina Jordan) ever. I love how you interspersed your comments with exemplary video clips to explain your comments. You won’t be surprised to find out that Angelina passionately immersed herself with the classic tunes of most of the “greats” that you mentioned... Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and others starting at the age of three! I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to future reactions to Angelina. One of my favorites is “7th Heaven”, an original, upbeat jazz tune performed by Angelina earlier this year (2021). It will give you a great example of the direction many of us hope Angelina steers her career. Make sure you react to the live studio version of what is destined to become a new classic in the jazz genre. ❤️
How fortuitous Andreas! Angelina just released a music video of “7th Heaven”! They’ both good. Like her other music videos (as opposed to her live studio versions), there is significant symbolism in the story it tells. I like the (slightly different) music in the live studio versions however. 😬😉👍
She is the boss it was said that her singing with Republic Records was with condition that this 15 year old superstar has complete control of everything Angelina Jordan. She is that good at her gift form God. All arrangements of covers are her arrangements
Since I didn't see the usual opening for this you may have missed her holding up a picture of Scream'n Jay Hawkins and her scribbling notes to the musical director. She likely wrote the score for this. She plays several instruments piano is just one. Besides several languages. I took her Proformance as a Homage to Jazz and in particular Scream'n Jay. And excellent comparisons of her techniques with other artists. IMO this, IS, one of the greatest if not the greatest singing and interpretative recordings of this Classic. It never fails to chill my old bones.
Thanks for making me aware of this. I just watched the beginning of the video again and there was a candle with his picture on it. I'm happy you liked the video!
Really enjoyed your reaction. You pointed out some things I've never heard from any other analysis of this song. Having no musical training myself, I truly appreciate learning why I love the artists I do. Thank you.
I’m not sure if you were implying that Angelina was getting some of her vocal cues from Joss Stone, but the performance excerpt you showed from Joss was from a 2017 concert. Angelina’s video was released a year earlier, in 2016.
Thanks for pointing this out. I wasn't trying to say Angelina took inspiration from Joss. I was trying to point out that both took inspiration from similar artists for this song.
This is by far the best and most insightful reaction I've seen on this song and I've seem most of them. Very impressive knowledge of other singers that you brought up and now I want to investigate. Subscribed...Thanks so much.
It would be great if you could react to the Angelina Jordan's newest covers: ALL I ASK by Adele and Heal The World by Michael Jackson. Also her original 7h Heaven (official studio version)
Excellent reaction to Angelina. I especially enjoyed that you showed how other artists tackled this song or special tone modulations. Thank you 😊. I’d love to see your reaction to “I’m still holding out for you”
Your reactions are the most informed I have heard yet. I have listened to more than 50 Angelina reactions, and yours are nearly as impressive as Angelina is ;) I recommend you react to her version of Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind".
Excellent analysis! Love this video! I really appreciate that you knew the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version too because a lot of people including vocal coaches had no idea about it during their reactions!
Angelina's grandmother and guardian angel/videographer (and artists in her own right) is from Iran. One can sometimes hear a "zest" of that influence in her vocals and it is really cool to hear it in these classics.
Enjoyed your reaction and analysis, you made me hit that subscribe button... lol... You may react to her audition performance for Norway's Got Talent, Gloomy Sunday from Billie Holiday (if you include the judges reactions, you will see how impressed they were, but one in particular asked her if she knew what the song was about, the implication that the is also known as the Hungarian Suicide song during the depression times, and she innocently responds "Yes, about a sad Sunday"....) ..... ALSO please analyze her rendition of Elton John's Good Bye Yellow Brick Road also performed at 13 during the America's Got Talent Champions's edition (same season as her Bohemian Rhapsody).... I am very interesting in your analysis for this one, I think is overlooked by many....
That was some great reaction and technical analysis! It's been a while since you have done an Angelina reaction. May I suggest her recent cover of Suspicious Minds? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RTbKhkceR00.html
Really great reaction. The best reaction I have seen in a long time. I really like the way you did the comparisons with the other singers to Angelina. Nicely done man. I enjoyed it. Thank you.
SHE IS NINE YEARS OLD HERE. Four years before Bohemian Rhapsody. 9 years old! I'm so glad you have joined us in this amazing journey with this extraordinary young lady. I am very much enjoying your reactions and look forward to more.
Great, insightful analysis of a wonderful performance by AJ. Just curious. Are there elements of the techniques she uses here which young singers should be discouraged from copying for risk of harming the physical development of their instrument? I note that AJ has never repeated this performance or this style since, even when doing the same song several times.
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video. Usually anything that involves distortion, growls, etc can be harmful quickly if done incorrectly. In my experience it simply takes quite a lot of practice to figure these out in a sustainable way. Plus during the process things don't always feel that great, so she may have decided to not go further down that path.
WOW! THANK YOU ANDREAS. I Absolutely LOVED your Reaction and the Presentation of your video. I Thoroughly enjoyed your Professional Analyses. I Appreciated the way that You Critique ..Explained.. Then Captured the Specifics of Angelina's( Vocal gymnastic Abilities) At the Exact Point of that Delively. Also Thank You for the Well Edited Additional information of the similarities of The Many Greats alongside each section of your breakdown of her performance. I have watched Many Vocal Coach Reactions and learning lots as I go along. But Your Professional Analyses was far more Insightful & Inspirational. ON.POINT ANDREAS. THANK YOU. If i could make one request I would love you to Analyses her very first song she composed herself called( What is life?) I look forward to more reactions from you. Excellent work WELL DONE.
Would love to see Andreas review Angelina's most recent cover of "My Funny Valentine" which she dropped this past February, 2022. She's now 16 ... and as far as I can tell, it's even better than her recent Adele covers.
like you, i had picked up on all of the R&B and even Southern R&B qualities that Angelina show-cases in this song. but there was always an element that i heard that i could not explain. her singing voice, at times, has an Arabian feel to it. then i discovered that her maternal grandmother is a famous Iranian singer who has coached Angelina since infancy. that finally answered all my remaining questions. you did an excellent job, sir. well done.
Ok, I saw your AJ Bohemian Rhapsody reaction, now this one. This one I mistakenly had as 40%. Was supposed to be 4 years, however, the one I am suggesting now for you IS almost 40% off her age in "Spell". The suggestion is I Who Have Nothing, one of 4 songs she did as a lark the first time she was in a pro recording studio. Try it, you'll like it, maybe even love it.
