Carole King's reaction is fine, it's hers. But we don't need to see it so often. Her reaction is practically a violent distraction. The Secret Service guy is clearly moved by Aretha too, but keeps giving Carole the side eye.

Her mixed voice is incredible! You know, it's funny to hear you commented that she has obviously taken care of her voice. For years, she didn't sound it as great as this, but in her last few years she was working out and exercising and taking better care of her voice [which had suffered a lot from smoking]. One of the results was this amazing performance.

In my 65 years I have heard countless songs by so many amazing singers. Aretha was in a league of her own. Chain of Fools was always my favorite. When I hear her voice I stop and enjoy the moment. You have to pay respect to that ability, that voice. When Aretha comes on my car radio I crank it all the way up and sing with her. (Must be the acoustics or something but at that moment I think I sound just like her!! Kidding...) I can’t help myself. I guarantee you God put in charge of heaven’s choir.

Because Aretha Franklin. That's all we need to know. The VOICE is just iconic, one of America's most legendary voices. Even in her 70s, she still brought the house down, and that was just an immense performance! When you talked about women being under pressure to be constantly perfect, it made me think about how when Idina Menzel muffed the last high note on "Let It Go" singing on live TV and the idiots on the Internet trash talked her for it. She shot back at them and basically said "Yes, I goofed. It happens. I'm more than the notes I sing." I give her credit for taking the high road and responding in a classy manner, without apologizing for anything. She owned it, again didn't apologize for it, and moved on. More power to her for that.

I am very lucky. When I close my eyes I see music in colours. Aretha 's voice changes from purple to white which for a voice is incredible. She is an important part of my life's soundtrack. Goodbye Aretha. Her voice will always remembered and cherished.

Something so moving about the voice that persists into old age. When Aretha knocks those chords out on the piano, takes her breath, and then sings with that warm, beautiful sound ... well, I know why Obama had to wipe his eye. Such a great song too. Carole King's joy said it all.

Aw, thanks Beth. I'm months late to the party, but enjoyed your commentary. If you want a seat-of-the pants Areth live experience from her hey-day, on one of her rare trips to Europe (she was famously nervous of flying) check out her appearance at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1967. She appeared as part of a jazz festival, and the place was jammed to the rafters with the all the hippest students, artists and hangers-on, roll-neck sweaters and horn-rimmed specs as far as they eye could see. The staging was rudimentary, and the hall has on-stage seating which she had to make her entrance through. A brief introduction by the promoter, then she takes mic and blasts off into (I can't get no) Satisfaction. The place goes CRAZY! People start throwing flowers, and she sings through a blizzard of white carnations, some hitting her face. The security guards run back and forth at the front of the stage, beating down the groundlings, and at the end of the song, the promoter makes a stern plea for order. It's an uphill battle though. But through it all she keeps on belting it out of the park. It is one of the most amazing live performances you will ever see.

Great reaction, Beth! Shortly after Aretha's death, Angelina recorded a delicate, sensitive, arrangement of this song in tribute to her. It's unlikely ever you'll see anyone else repeat Angelina's arrangement. She ends her tribute appropriately with ten seconds of black screen. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rt6KhBxiaDo.html Have you seen the video when Aretha "saved" the 1998 Grammy's? Pavarotti was scheduled to sing "Nessun Dorma" as the featured event. The show was already underway when the producer received a call from Pavarotti advising him that he was ill and could not sing. Aretha had been on earlier singing "Respect" with the Blues Brothers and the producer had been at a private event a few days earlier where she had sung Nessun Dorma..in her key, not in Pavarotti's. It was too late to change the music for the orchestra and chorus, so he grabbed a cassette of a rehearsal, ran up to Aretha's dressing room (where she was eating some fried chicken), explained the situation and asked her if she would fill in. She asked to hear the rehearsal and said, "Yes, I can sing this." As they say, the rest is history. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uHb75oTHOV4.html

I like your theory on women's voices. I've always, since childhood, patterned my voice after men, whose voices I always preferred the tone of. And it's still serving me well at 63. I've discovered a lot more in my lower and higher ranges by deliberate breath control and people like you are very helpful in the search.

Please react to Aretha's 'Good to me as I am to you,' from the classic 1968 'Lady Soul' album. It is probably the most intense and powerful performance ever put to tape. I'd love your take on this earth shattering vocal, one that solidifies her as the greatest voice in the history of recorded sound. There are many examples of her superiority over other singers, but this ferocious piece of blues is simply unmatched by any other singer and represents why they all trail in her wake and eat the crumbs that fall from the Queens table.

Actually, I don't think she did take care of her voice. There was almost a "hole" in her voice where there was this strange gap between her chest and mixed voice due to chain smoking. For years, Aretha really struggle. Suddenly in her last years as she was battling cancer she gave some wonderful performances.
@2029killtime
@2029killtime 4 года назад
Well she would only be in extremely warm temperatures and still dress as though it were cold. That's a huge commitment to vocal care that most people will not live in daily for that commitment. She was very wise and disciplined.
@sashineb.2114
@sashineb.2114 4 года назад
@@2029killtime Yes, that is true, but for many, many years, Aretha was a chain smoker. Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records even cautioned her back when she was having all of the hits in the 60s. But, like so many smokers, she didn't think it really mattered. But it did matter, and the evidence was obvious in the early 80s, particulary with her Jump to It album. She finally quit smoking around 1994, but then her weight got out of control. She admitted the smoking "messed" her voice.
@sashineb.2114
@sashineb.2114 4 года назад
I heard her a couple of times in concerts (90s and 2000s) and she did not sound in person then like she sounded in the 70s. Her voice was very thin and shrill, and the power was nothing like it once was. Her smoking really did wreck her voice. A critic once said that an opera singer with her voice would never allow themselves to treat the voice like that.
@popland1977
@popland1977 4 года назад
@@2029killtime She took some measures to help her voice, but like others said, she was a serious chain smoker and only stopped in the 90s. She even said this was her career regret
@Onionoil467
@Onionoil467 3 года назад
Ms. Franklin didn't really take care of her voice like other big singers of the time (Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, etc) but the genius of Ms. Franklin was that she was able to adapt her styling to the condition of her voice. In the 80's Ms. Franklin knew she had a damaged voice which is why she wasn't singing or singing as high and opted to sing lower. Once she stopped smoking she gained part of her voice back which is why she sang higher and more frequently. And in defense of the legends, smoking was seen as normal when they started so they didn't know it was dangerous for their voices until it was too late. If it was widely known and accepted that smoking harmed the body and the voice, I fully believe they wouldn't have smoked.
