I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. I have been around!
In 2008 I wrote the Vocaltutor Guide, 21 set lessons for singing teachers to get started, learning to teach, and produced 3 vocal exercise CD/Downloads.
I am now working on my first online singing programme. The Foundations of Singing that will be available on Udemy.

arabic scales differ from western scales in that the quarter tones are not present in western scales ...they are tones between the black notes and the white notes on the piano.. so its difficult for europeans who are unfamiliar with those tones to hear them correctly so many europeans will be mistaken for thinking that the singing is out of tune when in fact it is not out of tune. I dont think an english vocal coach is equipped to comment on this unless they are well versed in arabic music from all over the arab world, also the ornamentation is far more complex than western vocal ornamentation and the techniques of arabic ornamentation vary from region to region with different nuances and characteristics of the region the singer is from .. for example a singer from Iraq will have different melisma techniques to that of a singer from lebanon or Egypt. I would encourage the honest vocal coach to do more research on the subject before expressing criticism, in a typical arabic scale the 2nd or 3rd degree will be flattened by quarter but in Turkey they have 8th of tones and their system of microtonal music is really intricate, so you see....there is a lot to learn on the subject.

This is like choosing a bunch of rap or country songs or even yodelling and trying to judge them as "the best American songs." It was as if it was done on purpose. All the Arabic viewers know that this was such a poor choice of samples. There are so many different styles and varieties of Arabic songs and music it will make your head spin. All you have to do is search on RU-vid. For a good sampler, type "Arabic music - Background chill out music" or Arabic lounge music or Arabic dance music, etc. You will come across hundreds if not thousands of videos.

I am an Algerian singer, and I want to say that there are many maqams (modes or scales) in Arabic music, some of which do not contain a quarter of a ton, such as the Ajam (major), the Nahawand (minor), the Kurd, the Hijaz, Nkriz... and other musical maqams that depend on the quarter of the ton, the most important of which are: Rast, Al-Bayat, Saba, Hozam... There are also several types of pentatonic maqams, due to the association of Arabic music with several cultures, namely Persian, Arabic, Andalusian and Turkish. For this reason, a singer can sing in one maqam and can seamlessly switch between several maqams to perform a single sentence. Hence the difficulty of distinguishing for people whose ears are not accustomed to Arabic music. It is also worth saying that there is spiritual, emotional, and conceptual music such as the twenty-four Andalusian muwashshah, which was sung in Andalusia 24 hours a day, for every hour a song (Muwashah) suited him.

Most if not all of these maquams you mentioned are 100% Iraqi maquams. Some studies show that they dated as back as the sumerians all the way to the Abbasid era where the first musical theory was written in Baghdad

This is my favourite type of singing EVER. I get goosebumps when I listen to it. The story behind their voice is incredible and if you get a chance you should definitely look into it. Each note carries meaning and a word and has so much richness behind it. It's not just singing, it's a whole beautiful tapestry full of meaning. I follow pratibhamusic here on RU-vid and actively practice her teachings. She has a great way of explaining everything AND demonstrating it.

Arabic singing requires too much emotional connection, if you don't make the paudience feel what you feel you are judged as a bad singer in Arab countries no matter how good your technique is.
@safia-1221

The promised Musicland I actually have to disagree with you, nasality was never an authentic sound in arab singing, it's a modern technique and it's very disliked by old generation that my parents are from, Arab singing specially (Tarab) as all old music genres requires a proper chest voice development and fully opened pharyngeal, like Umm Kulthum, Asmahan, Fareed Al-Atrash, Abd Al-Haleem, Fairuz etc. you should listen more to old singers to know what real Arab singing should sound like.
@FuryOfTheSwarm
@FuryOfTheSwarm 4 года назад
@@safia-1221 brother/sister, i think the promised is trying to say that the singers are doing it on purpose, I do not know if it is of our older traditions, but many singers across the islamic world do it on purpose at least in the modern era.
@thearabicmusicland
@thearabicmusicland 2 года назад
@@safia-1221 I understand what you mean a lote of old great Arab vocalists in TARAB in middle east dont use a nasal sound, but the reason why a lote of north african Arab singers use it is because it's a very popular technique in Andalossi music, that inspired modern singing in Algeria and Morocco, so again those singers are doing it for style not for lack of technique as many western people might think

I loved this video. Greetings from a tunisian living in bham !! And the guy with the eyebrows is Mohammed assaf, winner of a famous singing competition, they even made a movie out of his incredible life. You should react on more classical singers like Sabah fakhri or umm kaltoum and maybe compare with more moderns Arabic tunes xxxx love

@khaledab1781
@khaledab1781 4 года назад
I see your point but Its not the same as yodelling at all ! Yodelling is all about technic and control and its emotionless , Arab singing is all about emotions and passion + fluid runs and ruffs + supreme melisma + good control . So its more harder and need more talent than the western music tbh !

What are you tring to do Arabs singing is so much defrent its harder than english or any other languages its all about we have a specific technic in our singing you can't decide if any arab singer can sing or not and its not about the voice its about how singing

Haha I just love how Westerners react to the microtones and Oriental composition in general, it's one of the best sights you could ever see, a testimony of spiritual communication that goes beyond cultural and linguistic barriers, I'm sure they'll feel the same when they see us reacting to and experiencing their arts.

Thank you for posting this very interesting video. I didn't find it to be judgy at all, but a candid and honest look at a different vocal tradition. Yes, the source material was limited and problematic, but that is no one but the original poster's fault. The comments on nasality, open and closed qualities and resonance were very helpful.

So happy to see Arabic music/style being showcased on your wonderful channel! Although I would recommend watching/reacting to some full performances of well known artists ( for example, a Mai Farouk performance with the National Arab Orchestra doing songs like Enta Omri or Alf Leila w Leila) as this particular clip you've reacted to is merely a random compilation of artists riffing and thus doesn't cover the full range of musicality, complexity and emotions that Arabic music brings to the table.
