Abdul Baasit So Hyang is a 41 year old South Korean vocalist. She has roots in gospel but has made a name for herself by competing in many Korean competitions, doing duets with famous American artists, and recording many collabs, personal songs, and soundtracks. She’s pretty much a universally praised and adored living legend in her home country and for good reason. You should really check out some of her performances. She has countless on RU-vid. Not only is she one of the most technically skilled vocalists ever (probably the best alive right now), but she has amazing covers with beautiful, emotive arrangements.

She (and every vocalist) has more to them than that, and I think it’s interesting to explore some of those lesser-shown aspects of their voices too
Jordan Davis I think people just like to compare Sohyang’s high notes to that of famous western singers because her high notes are just so unbelievably good. From a technical perspective, Sohyang pretty much has the best upper belting register of all time. Balanced (or slightly heady when sick) with support up to C#6. I know the channel Lovato Lover compared the entire ranges of Sohyang, Demi, and Ariana as well as things like agility, transitions, whistle register, breath support, and tone, and Sohyang still won by a very large margin.
We already know that SoHyang wins this easily. Maybe some people say that her tone is not great, but i love it, and technically she's a beast! I'm sorry, but everything above Eb5 and up is for SoHyang too, everything.
I’ve never really understood how someone could prefer Demi or Ariana’s tones. At a certain point they just sound like they’re yelling shrilly and thinly just to reach the notes. Sohyang supports and resonates all of her belts with such bright, resonant, beautiful healthy belts. Tone is subjective though.

Rebin Ismail first of all, lows-and mid-belts definitely goes to Mariah, and on the upper belting they’re equal since they’re all supported and resonate in their prime(what I mean by upper belting is E5-G5) and super upper belting(above G5-C#6) goes for Sohyang since Mariah never belted anything above G5, head voice goes to Sohyang as well. Plus breath support should be Mariah since lots of her songs are vocal demanding and the translations between registers are insane so you need very good breath management in order to support those notes. At last, agility definitely belongs to Mariah since she’s one of the most agile singers in the world. Overall they’re pretty equal, but Mariah has more consistency over all the registers that she sings(because she supports all of her head voices during her prime even though they’re not resonate)
Haven’t even watched this yet, but here’s my opinion 😂 I prefer Demi’s voice and music, but Sohyang is a vocal powerhouse who is UNMATCHED. Demi is primarily chest with a lot of mix, while Sohyang is mainly mix with chest resonance.
Demi is also a powerhouse. Her voice is incredible powerful. But yeah Sohyang in th extrem of high notes has a better technique. But Demi also wins in some high notes and in mid and lows notes.
Sohyang is definitely the technically superior belter over Demi (she could literally support over an octave higher than Demi with a balanced mix). I prefer Sohyang’s tone as well. It’s so bright and resonant. Due to her lack of support and a subpar mix, Demi sounds really thin, nasal, and shouty the higher she goes. Her C5s are great though. Both are very talented, but Sohyang definitely has a much greater technical edge.
Technique is great and helpful but, I really almost dislike Demi's voice most of the time but . . . I prefer her voice over SoHyang's, better or not. SoHyang is so vocally bland. It's like listening to a Disney Princess voice actress, but one of the ones you just don't care much about? Demi at least has color and texture. A vocal flavor. It's kind of like having a master seamstress and designer at your disposal, but the only fabric you can use is burlap. Who cares if the stitching is perfect, who actually wears it / wants to wear it?
That said as bland as both of them are artistically and creatively, Demi has SoHyang beat for days as far as that end goes. SoHyang is just impressive, but her voice reminds me of a Disney Princess. NOTHING interesting there.

Because she isn't the honest vocal coach, she is always biased. Demi, Miley and Tori, Mariah are her sweethearts and always get points even if they don't deserve it. But Christina, Celine she is always more critical of.
I really hope you react to sohyang again!! She’s a tremendous vocalist and a cancer survivor. She sings for the lord, to move and help people. I can’t stress enough how brilliant her technique is. She’s mostly self taught but did receive some training from I believe Micheal Jackson’s vocal coach years ago.

Arirang Alone, Bridge Over Trouble Water, Mona Lisa and many other almost flawless performances when she was sick or had pneumonia sweep Demi's all performances un my opinion. So Hyang is like showing only her supported range and she really control her voice.

It is actually pronounced: Soiang (korean student here: h's are voiceless in middle of words at the start of a middle syllable, they sound like in English at the beginning of words and at the end of syllables they sound like a t [called "batchim"])

Sohyang is always adding crescendos, diminuendos, vibrato into certain parts of songs, an edgy sound for a more rock like approach, appropriate runs and breathiness as well. Tone is completely subjective.

Georgina, they are both using a "mix" of chest and head voice. It's physiologically impossible to "belt" that high in pure chest voice. Yes, the ratios in their mixes differ, but they're both indeed using some dimension of their head voice.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT, belting Is pretty much taking mixed voice higher, they are both lyric sopranos, they are already mixing in g4, so you can't say they are not mixed. The difference Is Demi Is chestier. But belting with pure chest would be Christina Aguilera, specially in her debut, that Is pretty much screaming and you can see it límite her range as well.

That's right, but SoHyang sings all her belting range with head voice dominance, which is pretty clear around C-Eb5. When Demi sings it powerfully with almost clear chest voice, SoHyang is quite weak and mushy in this area. The higher she goes, the strength grows because her head dominant mix starts to shine there. On the other hand, Demi keeps chest dominance all the way up which is much harder to keep ease and sustain. It often leads her to strain or miss pitch, but overally it's much more powerful sound.

Have you heard of SoHyang's story? She is a cancer survival, she sings for churches and charities, and she does missionary works. Unlike Demi and most singers, she rejected agencies chasing for her signature including that of the late Michael Jackson. Her songs are to console those who need consolation. Now you know why she isn't famous, while BTS and Blackpink are.
You are so wrong about So Hyang, she is operatically trained. So much bias in this video. Demi pushes more than So Hyang, there is virtually perfect freedom in her voice, her use of Dynamics destroy Demi's senseless shouting. Demi also has intonation issues. Plus, So Hyang in many of these clips just beat breast cancer.

Demi is so great with those notes at the beginning of 5th octave. She can still maintain up to the mid 5th, but again and again, those notes at the top of 5th octave (from G5 and above) is the HOME of the QUEEN! Edit: At that moment when I saw Sohyang with the E5 from Fate comes up, I knew she would win!!! That performance with the orchestra held one of her best Fate performances ever!

Singer? Yes. Artist? No. As someone else mentioned she is extremely technically sound and perfect, but my god is she dull and forgettable. Musically it's like listening to a Disney Princess movie, but not even one you're interested in listening to the soundtrack for. Her vocal choices are safe, she lacks shades of color and tones to make you lean forward. Who cares about perfect stitching if the dress is made of burlap? Who cares about A+ toast when there is B+ or A- Lobster out there?

Both have great voices. I like Demi's natural tone better. She has such a warm and versatile voice. But her upper register can be super annoying at times though. I also like SoHyang's sweet tone. She sings a lot better in Korean and is technically more polished than Demi. Her upper register and head voice are unvelievable!

Yeah, literally every other vocal coach, some with more credentials, never ever described her as yelling a note. So Hyang is trained by professional singers, one of which was Michael Jacksons vocal coach. She doesn't yell. Ever. I suspect the honest vocal coach brings some unconscious bias into her reviews sometimes
I've been saying she's not a good vocal coach from ever since... She prefers bright tone and sometimes completely ignored a person technique... I'm sure if she were to review Mariah vs Lara fabian/sohyang/Monica (Spain), she would give Mariah the win because of her bright tone despite all those 3 ladies technique is much better than mariah's
