The origin of the song is an old Russian folk song which Diana has transformed into her own amazing interpretation. The original song apparently has many verses and variations which would have sometimes been played at wedding receptions to the guests. Thus an accomplished singer and storyteller would weave a story from the guests responses and the choice of a myriad of verses to keep the guests entertained for a considerable period of time. The shortened and extraordinary version that Diana performed starts with the singer as an orphan girl/woman who has been bonded or employed by a rich family for basic food and lodging. She has been betrothed to another, probably rich stranger by the family, so is virtually going from one form of bondage to another, and leaving the only life she has known for another with a stranger. She is at the river asking the spirits, maybe of her dead mother or others, what to do or/and bless the marriage. She is to be a bride to a stranger so things are pretty hectic and weird. Then in the middle she is back in the courtyard with the guests, the horses, and her playmates/friends/fellow servants. She describes the scene and tells again of her feelings, worries and excitement. She can't seem to make up her mind whether the future will be better or worse, whether she should accept her fate or try to drown in the river to be with the other lost spirits and her mother. Generally typical feelings that a lot of brides go through on her wedding day. There is a youtube video available that merges the soundtrack of Diana singing this song with cut scenes and visuals from the movie "Avatar". Even though the two have little in common as far as the actual storylines go, when seen the mixin is strangely haunting and complementary. Probably because Diana can appear at times to be not of this world.
