Vocal Coach Reacts to Floor Jansen - Shallow - Live - Beste Zangers 2019 - Ken Tamplin
It takes some guts to take on a song that Lady Gaga captured the world with but Floor Jansen was definitely up for the challenge.
Floor took on the Gaga song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born and performs it live on Beste Zengers a Dutch reality television show where major artists take on covers of other performers.
Floor is currently the lead vocalist of Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish and has multiple other side projects including the hard rock group Northward and the progressive metal group Star One.
Known for her dynamic vocal range and her ability to take on anything from classical to belting, Floor can also growl with the best of them.
Today’s performance really moved me and I thought her version was pretty phenomenal.
I’m curious to see what you all thought and how you felt her version measured up to Lady Gaga’s.

@@fooser77 What the... I myself try to troll Floor fans with Tarja videos, but this happens because of balance and taste. There are for sure other bands you can compare this to. The style you posted doesnt meet symphonic metal or even gothic, and don´t even ask me to compare the female voice level of Floor or Tarja.

@@ArsRegnandi I ,on the other hand, try to tell Tarjafans that Tarja has flaws in her vocals such as poor English and disturbing vibrato. Even Anette’s vibrato is more beautiful than Tarja’s. In versatility, Tarja is not at Floor's level.

She is so versatile in the use of her voice. Something she definitely showcased in the eight episodes of Beste Zangers. Different styles, languages...she has amazed the Dutch and, thanks to RU-vid, a whole lot of people around the world. Thanks for the reaction. 🌷🌷🌷For your own amusement....check out the song Winner, for a rocksong Floor sang on the same show. She sang it for the curly guy on the couch who wrote the song for his disabled brother.

@@kentamplin in final episode she sung it again but than in duet with the curly guy. but there are more good options to check in this show. try STRONG by EMMA HEESTERS (youtube artist) , SOUND OF SILENCE by HENK POORT (opera singer) and am curious what you think of 2 songs by ROLF SANCHEZ (reaggeaton). he did the classics THE RIVER (bruce springsteen) and HOTEL CALIFORNIA (eagles). he did the river more intimate and gave hotel california a latin vibe

In the episode, Floor mentioned that she didn't feel comfortable to sing in pop style and the band proposed her to make it a ballad version of the song, softer and delicate. She killed it of course. Floor is amazingly good and versatile and in that show, she impressed everybody. There's another version in that same show when they performed duets. Floor with Tim sang this song too.

I’ve never heard a more versatile singer in every way one can interpret that description. I’m so glad you found Floor on this program. Not that she doesn’t show immense versatility in Nightwish, of course she does. This is another great platform where she plays with even more styles. It’s fun to see how she makes them into her own with her unique vocal signature. You mentioned Phantom with Henk Poort. That may be worth a reaction if you haven’t done it already. Honestly, as one would expect, everything the Goddess does is divine. Check out her other gifts on the same show, Beste Zangers 🙏🏻❤️

Floor; "I haven't sung many pop songs in my life and found it a challenge to cover such a song without making it a super heavy version. Instead of heavier, we made it more like a ballad. To make it so small to sing, to keep it like this even as it goes higher, was the real challenge, but what a wonderful song this is ".

What really makes her great is the fact that she can add the emotions so well. There's a big risk of relying just on your technique when you're that good at it, but that wouldn't have the same effect that Floor has. Maybe if she actually had to sing something she can't "feel" herself we might see her doing great in technique but kinda "meh" emotionally. Of course that goes with anyone though.

Check out the Nightwish performance at Wacken 2013. Floor and the band perform what can only be called a perfect concert. She is on a whole other level of brilliant.

You truly don't listen or merely hear Floor when she sings, you experience her and all the emotional impact that the song needs and requires to stir your soul and shake your emotions. This show has shown everyone all the different emotional tour de force songs she is capable of and in several different languages to boot. This show has elevated her from Valkyrie Goddess of Metal to Musical Goddess and the Dutch just discovered what a national treasure they had all along.

The great thing about "Beste Zangers" is that the musicians are free how they want to make a song sound and then you get sometimes surprises that you do not expect, that is the power of the "Beste Zangers".And to think that all participants are a few meters away so their experience comes in like a sledgehammer.for example, when Floor and Henk sing the Phantom together

The basic idea of the show is that they invite seven singers with various styles of singing/music and each singer becomes the focus of that show which the other singers cover a song of either the singer on the main couch or a song that has a more personal meaning to them. In the eight episode they do the duets between the singers. So basically there is only the seven singers, the host, the band and the production crew there and no further audience to give it also a more intimate atmosphere.

I love how honest you are in videos, I was hesitant to watch your response to this one because it blew me away. Hi Ken. You should react to her singing The Phantom of the Opera as a duet with a guy that sings opera. His name is Henk Poort and he has done Phantom of the opera in Dutch . In this show he sings a country song and sings Sound of Silence by Disturbed. Its amazing. He learned to distort his voice for Silence and he uses it in the phantom.

I understand what you mean at the end. It's easy to simultaneously focus on the emotion of her performance as well as the beauty of her voice, whereas with gaga the beauty of her voice kind of takes precedence even though she is singing emotionally too. It's because she's not going full on belting (Floor), she's strong and soft and strong and soft, just like you said.

Poet and the pendulum by nightwish live is great as she shows what you are talking about within a music score. And believe it or not but to round out her abilities she uses fry voice in yours is an empty hope. Floor is a vocal coach as well and she shows how to do all these within the same song as well. Truly versatile singer a true master of the craft.

It's insane how she can go from very small and sweet sounding to pop to a freaking powerhouse of a voice while combining rock and opera in the same song. Literally one of the most versatile female singers at least the ones I have heard. She and Henk Poort knocked this season of Beste Zangers out of the park. What I am wondering tho, can you native English speakers her an odd/Dutch accent on her? She sounds very naturally when singing English to me but that might be because I hear a lot of bad English accents on a daily basis.

Ken, thanks for the great reaction and explanations of the various techniques that Floor employs. As a non-singer, it is very interesting to "see" what it is I am hearing. This entire TV series was great. As a Nightwish fan, I originally started watching it for Floor, but the other singers were also great. A wonderful lady by the name of Denise Hofs translated and put English subtitles on the episodes and posted them on youtube for the world to watch. I highly recommend exploring them a bit, the interactions between the singers on the couches are great. I also wonder what you think of the format of the show: 7 singers, each episode one is the focus and the others sing songs that either the "focus" wrote/performed or that has a lot of meaning to that singer. No competition, just the singers singing for each other.

In Nightwish she also always carefull builds the tension in the song, starting relatively soft, and building it up step by step, working towards that creat finale or crescendo... (see f.i. Ghost Love Score, but also in other songs)

First of al I'm really happy to get reacquainted to you in a totally different way... I listened so much to your guitar playing back in the nineties!!! Secondly, now you have to do all Floor's songs of this show. Each song is so different and yet so Floor, it's like she's giving master classes to the other singers (this however is the one which she really made her own and yes made it actually hers 😉. She also performed this as a duet cover version btw, for the same show and actually a bit unplanned).

When power singer go on the emotional side with their voices. I get similar feelings when Maria from "In this Moment" sang their songs acoustically versions at EMG . Check them out, it's worth your time. On that note also Aurora when she does covers she brings a lot of emotion just like here - thou the emotion might not be the same as the original song was like "God is woman" and "believer" also worth your time.

Floor is what you might call a complete singer. She has mastered a bunch of different techniques and styles and that has liberated her expression. She is able to pick the sound that conveys the emotions she wants and she knows she can pull it off. A testament to her hard work and training.

So I’m not a singer. Can’t carry a tune in a bucket. But for some reason I love watching these kinds of videos, and you’re hands down one of the best reactors/teachers I’ve seen. I actually felt myself leaning toward the screen a bit, because the knowledge you dropped was both easy for a layperson like me to understand, and just plain fascinating, and you did it in such a fun, engaging way. Floor Jansen is a big Lady Gaga fan. Floor Jansen sings this to Emma Heesters who is the one on the couch next to the host 😍There is some pure gold on this show 😜 Floor can onley sing a song when she has an understanding of the song that makes sence to her, and when she feels the song, she kills it 🐱‍👤🎶👌 She did this song again on this show as a duet in another episode with Tim Akkerman a little bit fiercer 😁 By the way to do it this soft was a tip from the band behind her she said 👀🎁🌹 You forgot the little wel placed rasp when you said stuff about Belle Canto and Nightwish chops 😜😎😁

With the plethora of “vocal coach” reactions to Floor polluting the internet, nice to see one of the few real analytical reactions. Hope more people come across your stuff. Not being a trained singer, it’s nice to learn about some of the technique that this amazing singer employs in her vocals.

The concept of this programm is fantastic. All good singers singing like a ode to eachother. And the band behind her....very good. And that girl is Emma, she is a RU-vid singer. Also impressed by her performance together with Henk Poort.

I love Floor, this version is better than the origional. I love her ability to set lyrics on fire to showcase the poetry. I see this repeatedly in her performances.

The Duet episode Floor did with Henk poort of phantom , she also did shalow with tim Akker man as a duet. and its not bad either. Henk actualy did the disturbed version of sound of silence. and it will blow your mind as hes an opera (baritone) singer. Something realy worth to watch .

I've become obsessed with Nightwish because of Floor. Nightwish so reminds me of Renaissance a 70's classical/rock/jazz fusion band. Renaissance also had a fantastic singer Anne Haslam who like Floor had a huge range of vocal techniques.

Floor sings in colors and emotions. Each week one performer has the others sing their music or songs close to them. Floor made most of them cry. I suggest Emma Heesters (the woman Floor was singing to) sing Strong to Floor.
