he wrote with his friend and Andrew Ridgeley (he is credited on this song btw) and it was originally a Wham! song, but he released it as a solo too.@@c.a.d.w.a5573
I agree. Well, somebody’s cheese is somebody else’s whipped cream I guess. I agree with you. She also called “endless love” by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie “cheesy”… I guess anything that she is embarrassed to like or makes her blush that she will call that.
Who doesn't enjoy cheesy anyway. It is an essential part of the dairy food group. Everything is better with cheese on it. Also bacon but that is part of the meat food group.
I was shocked to hear GM described as cheesy also! I guess if you only know Wham and a few later singles? By the end of the 80s sax solos were a cliche but this song was a massive hit for George Michael and rightly so. Best she listen to his solo albums especially the first three starting with Faith.. I think he was the finest male vocalist of the 80s and 90s.
I was thinking the same and about to comment that his music isn’t cheesy. He was a legend and so talented. He wrote that song at 17 years old and on a bus! RIP yogurt
Seeing George Michael so young and hearing this song for the first time in about 30 years, got me nostalgic for that era, and a little sad, knowing he's gone now (as is that era).😢
@@stephanieparido3790 Yeah. I probably _HAVE_ heard it a few times, but I don't usually pay any attention to music I hear in stores. In one ear, out the other type situation. What I meant was, I have never _intentionally_ listened to that song. I'm more of a Van Halen, Rush type of guy. Wham was OK, just not my cup of tea.
I recall hearing or reading that George came up with that sax solo while riding a bus at boarding school when he was just 17-years old! One of the most iconic song moments of the 80's if not music on the whole... at 17! WOW!
Darque, you are right. In an interview he stating he was boarding the bus because he was going to ride it all day long since he was bunking off school for the day. As he entered the bus the sax line popped into his head. That was the birth of the song. How amazing is that!!
Listen Without Prejudice is out of this world. When someone ask me about the greatest album of all time, I always have to consider LWP along with a small selection of 3-4 other albums.
@@kimmern999 I completely agree about LWP. No wonder it out sold Faith in pretty much the rest of the world. That album went to number 1 when it came out in 1990. I have the original and I also bought the remastered anniversary collector's disc when it was released on the 27th anniversary. It was re-leased and also went straight to number 1. Fastest selling album for a re-release in UK history. I guess that says it all. George was a one of a kind. I love how you explain is technique. I enjoy listening to you speak about your signing knowledge. Thank you for that.
Our world has become so jaded that we can't enjoy perfection unblemished, unless it's depressing yells. Embrace the careless whisper by George, no apology needed.
Yeah dude. I'm a rock and metal guy and don't find George Michael cheesy. Great voice & had a lot of great songs. I grew up in the 80's and loved this album in my preteen years. Still appreciate singer of it to this day.
Not so cheesy when you consider that he's got a magical voice and that counts for a hell of a lot. he's one of those self taught guys that no one can touch even with years of lessons.
Thanks Beth. George was amazing and such a wonderful singer and songwriter. I wouldn't say it was a guilty pleasure at all because anyone who understands talent understands the immense talent of this wonderful man, who had his demons but showed his greatness in music and in many aspects of his life, esp the generosity he had. The live versions of Careless Whisper on Wham! Live in China and Rock in Rio are especially fantastic.
I am a heavy metal fan, and it is quite obvious that George Michael could sing very well. It´s just a shame that his life ended in the same way as so many musicians throughout time.
He was a GREAT singer! He KNEW how to show emotion without overly "show-boating". I wish singers would take cues of him rather than those who are more "histrionic".
1) I've LOVED George Michael since I first heard him back in the 80s. 2) THIS song has a very special place in my heart and my memories. I LOVE IT! 3) I've never once thought of GM as a guilty pleasure. Ever since I got his album Listen Without Prejudice, I was hooked. That dude CAN SING! 4) It's really sad what happened to him and how his life unfolded. I so wish he was with us today. I miss him and his music terribly. 5) RIP George and thanks for all the great songs and memories. You will never be forgotten. Love your analysis Beth. I love how you hear and share all these technical details with us. Really adds to my love of music.
Just listen to him at his last live concert. I believe he was right at 49 -50, when he performed at the Palais Garnier in Paris. The Symphonica European tour was spectacular. His voice aged like fine wine. Stunning.
Pretty sure he wrote this when he was 16 or 17. He didn’t connect to it as time went on, but he sang it at concerts because he knew his fans wanted to hear it. Of all his Wham! era songs he was most proud of Everything She Wants.
Such an epic talent. He is truly missed... What a great reaction to this video. You should also do a reaction to (Everything she wants) when he was still in Wham. Andrew Ridgley sings backing vocals and it shows that he could sing on a professional level as well. :)
Andrew does not sing backing vocals on that song. He just lip syncs to George’s vocals in the video. Everything She Wants is one of the Wham! songs where George did everything himself. I’m sure he sings bg vocals on other songs though
Such a great song! I’m glad Seether updated it for a new audience a few years back.. also you just said guilty pleasure, there’s no such thing no need to be guilty..
George Michael always got dismissed as "cheesy pop", but he was actually super talented. He wrote all his own songs, played instruments, could dance and sing beautifully AND he was gorgeous to look at! Honestly think he wasn't taken seriously because he was so "pretty"...but his songwriting craft is impressive. Modern pop singers don't write their own stuff...but he did it all.
@@jonperans i didn't say "cheesy"! Beth did! Repeatedly in this video!!! I am a diehard George Michael fan and don't think he is cheesy at all...i was making a retort to Beth!
@@MaleOrderBride i know, haha. I was referring to Beth. She, as a vocal coach, should know this is playback and that GM isnt cheesy. Terrible take by her
That’s just the best slow forever ! George have a own technical voice ! Just a awesome lyrics ! When George take a mic it’s like to be in a other world ! So much love about this music
Well... Cheezy isn't the adjective to be used on this incredible artist/vocalist. I became a fan of his in My early 30's... I remain one.... 30 years later. 😉
Show some respect this man was a legend no one can sing like this today this was the music of an era. Everyone wanted to sing like him . Tell me anyone that can cover this today with the raw emotion! The control is impeccable!
Thanks for your reaction - always a pleasure to listen to BUT this time I just have to protest, "cheesy", "guilty pleasue"....No no no. Yes maybe if George Michael was only Careless Whisper - a song he wrote at the age of 17! But he grew up you know, and if you love him as much as you say you do you ought to know about some of his other work with amazingly beasutiful and MATURE lyrics. Everyone has the right to their opinions, so usually I wouldn't bother to write a comment, but I would hate it if a younger generation who listen to your reaction would somehow be made to believe that listening to George Michael's music is cheesy, NO, far from it. I love George Michael too and I want his music to live on for generations to come. Beth, seeing as you love him, do yourself a favour and listen to his album Older for example. You'll get an hour of absolute musical pleasure, and then you can discard that rather ignorant statement about his music being cheesy for good. It is a win-win for you and us all.
Kay O'Day- excellent comment. I agree. George Michael was an extraordinary talent. No need to associate his legacy with such a derogatory term. (Although- full disclosure here - I would not object to Wham being described as "dairy-like"). 😉 ✌
One of George Michael's very best vocals in a career filled with timeless classics...He had a voice so smooth that even whipped butter was jealous. Sadly, He got caught up in all the trappings of being a global icon, which ultimately led up to his demise. His music will be admired as long as there are people to listen to it....RIP George
I mean if George Michael is cheezy, then at least he's triple A Gouda cheezy. Just one of the greatest imo. Moreover, I think its about time to react to good old Barry Manilow. Could it be magic for example, but Mandy should also do the trick. Have fun anyways! (And if not, Duffy-Warwick Avenue should also be on the list)
He wrote this song when he was 17! Great voice. My ex-wife said he was best eye candy in the early 80's. The sax player reminds me of Sade's sax player; wonder if it was the same guy?
He's one of the most respected vocalists , songwriters and producers there has been so I am with those who take serious issue with him being called cheesy here . This is a man who by far outstripped his fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees of 2023 to get over 1 million votes and got his induction on the first try unlike shockingly Janet Jackson who it took three attempts or other great artists who took several tries, so you can't call him a guilty pleasure either. Those numbers show too many love and respect him so there's no reason for any guilt.
Have to agree with comment below this is not cheesy. The 70s and 80s had great groups, great sounds, and great music. Not like today with autotune and all the other computer generated gimmicks. They also do not have a rapper in the middle or start of song that always has to promote who ever the singer is with their names. These had lyrics that can be covered by a lot of people. Soulful and awesome vocal talent. Today's music has too many over the top singers relying on their looks or their bodies being exposed to sell music instead of the music and talent standing on their own. I also agree the Sax was used heavily during this time and it made for great music. Sad to see all the people moving away from that and other awesome instrumental talents. George (RIP) was an amazing vocalist/artist.

First off, love your reaction and I am a huge fan of George Micheal and in particular Careless Whisper and even more particular the version he performed in China in 1984! That being said, the version you watch miss, is a playback from the original song that is being played in the official clip! He didn't sing live because I know in which program he was performing here, which is TopPop. This is a dutch program I know very well as a child (I am dutch myself) and it was very popular in the 80s and all performers always playback! 🙄👎 The real live performance and a much better version would be for you the 1984 version of Careless Whisper he did in China! Also the version he sings together with Smokey Robinson the song Careless Whisper is 100% live and special because of the double voices. 👍
Like others I don't consider this song a guilty pleasure, nor do I consider this song or really any song I heard by him to be cheesy. Even though he was a huge star back then and even before he passed, I still considered him to be very underrated as a musician, writer, and even as a singer.
A few years ago, my best friend of the time, a woman named Kim, and I went to the Amp in Tampa for a Nickelback show. Well, she wanted a Tshirt. The line was long. I was concerned we would lose track of each other, so I waited outside of the crowd. The opening act had a cover of "Frozen Whispers"and I missed it! The things you do for love.
Praying for Time is one of the best singles of the early 90s. To this day it strikes awe in me when I listen to it. I would love a follow up reaction of GM performing that song.
I am about the same age of George, so I grew up with his songs and this song is my favorite song until now. He was really an awesome story teller. If you want to hear a beautiful song about a broken heart then George is the Master. He weeped, wailed, and cried so beautifully with his high yet soft voice. No other male singer can do that.
There's an ultra rare performance of Club Tropicana that Wham! performed live in Japan (NOT the Top of the Pops version) really early on, but the quality is great, and there's zero backing vocal tracks. It's purely live and you get to hear how he sounded when he was really young. I highly recommend checking it out.
...end he wrote this (music and lyrics) at 19. Later one of his long time friend struggle with money, so George add the guy as a "co-writer" so every money he get from this (which is....a LOT) half gose on to the friend. George Micheal was one of a kind. Well he was the only guy that Queen asked for to go on with them after Freddy died. So...yes. He was one of a kind amazing talent, left us with 4 albums, yes 4 and become a legend.
I can tell Beth is english speaking when she says George Michael is cheasy but doesn´t say the same about Luismi. Those are very similar genres and techniques. And when you really listen, the "cheasy" aspect fades away, and it´s simply great techniques and voice quality.
I was smiling all through out this video. George Michael is one heck of a technical singer with a very unique tone. Sadly often overlooked in preference of big belters like.
Faith sold 10 million. He won awards over Michael Jackson and Madonna that year. To be the best you've got to beat the best, and he did in 1988. Can any of you guys imagine on your first solo album getting called up to the podium with Michael Jackson sitting in the seat looking at you getting in a ward over him?
Listen to the way he says "I've" been given. His voice goes into this incredible smooth falsetto he sounds exactly like Barry Gibb then it drops right back down to his normal range.
Beth, How do you define cheesy? Is it obvious emotion? Or a sweet, pure tone? Or is it the Beach Boys Don't Worry Baby or Fun, Fun, Fun, or Kokomo? How do you categorize Yellow Submarine? I Want to Hold Your Hand? Have you listened to GM's Hard Day, Jesus to a Child, covers of SW They Won't Go When I Go, Love's In Need of Love Today, or GM's Praying for Time, Cowboys and Angels, Freedom 90??? Love your analysis, question your pigeonholing. Michael Gilman
