She didn’t sing live because she simply hasn’t got the confidence in her vocal abilities because she just isn’t a consistent and competent singer. She (and her team) wasn’t about to set herself up for a below par live performance. She’s a great dancer and performer, and she happens to be able to carry a tune occasionally. That isn’t shade, that is just the reality of the situation and she certainly knows it so why it is so hard for her die-hard fans to come to terms with is beyond me.

I'm one of the teen that says that maybe she is not in playback, but I think that when u upload something on youtube, even if you are a master in the field, people can comment the video. If it's not like that...she can deactivate the comment below the videos :) So... i think that talking about why maybe it could not be that... It's alright. Shouting and arguing for nothing it's stupid and desrespectful, not saying politely that maybe it's not like that (just saying)

Shes still trying, after all these years! I’m Puerto Rican so whenever she performs at an award show, my family and I pay extra close attention so we can pick it apart cause we are music nerds and hard on our own people. One performance in particular we all thought she must’ve had a vocal coach in the past few years cause we heard a huge improvement. Of course, it was probably pre recorded as well.

Remember the Obama inauguration : Kelly Clarkson sang live 'My Country Tis of Tee' and Beyonce lip synched the National Anthem. They sang at the same set up. Beyonce's team said that it was too cold to sing live, but... Miss Clarkson slayed her live performance.

Beyoncé explained that she didn’t sing live because she didn’t actually have the time to rehearse with the band and didn’t feel comfortable to do so by taking a risk and therefore letting down her country. So that’s why she decided to use her pre-recorded track. This is understandable because usually with huge events like this, as an artist, you don’t know you’re doing it until the last minute literally. I don’t recall Beyoncé’s team saying that but I do remember they said that Yo Yo Ma had to pre record his performance because of the cold weather conditions. Beyoncé later did sing the National Anthem live at her NFL press conference to prove she can do it live.

She was definitely lipsyncing. The sound was too studio and excessively clean, you can tell the change of sound when she speaks with the open mic. It was still an awesome delivery.

I read that another artists would sing the track and she would copy the vocal singing on top which was then released as the single. I think the artist was Ashanti. This was before she released her own music.

It was 100% mimed, the vocals were perfect and not even gaga could do a studio quality 100% perfect vocal. It was also very cold and she hid her throat muscles which would have been a big giveaway. When she did the Spanish part her voice was hoarse and rough but then suddenly it was pure and clean? No.

Jlo is a great dancer but I'd never pay to see her live. She does not have the talent or technique to call herself a singer. She lip synchs practically everything so I'd never pay for her show, I'd feel cheated. She's not the only one who does it. (britney spears, Beyonce, selena gomez) are all guilty of this. I admire artists like pink, Kelly Clarkson, jessie J, lady gaga etc who always sing live and dance and perform, no matter what, they are real performers.

@@DL-sl3nt its NOT her personally doing this. Her manager at the time did it. They stole it and gave it to her. They did all the work. This woman never disrespected any ladies in the industry. Leave her alone. She was mostly a polished manufactured pop star. She never wrote stuff nor did she really sing, she always admitted that. Her songs arent even vocally challenging. She makes music to go in sync with her amazing stage presence and dancing skills. Also the movie she potrayed selena is all enough for me to say she is an amazing actress. Youre literally giving her little to no credit

@@marcinmakara9600 Someone who can actually sing well *live* and/or someone who better represents Latinos (i.e., not someone who has a history of passing-off others' vocals as their own or someone who has been guilty of cultural appropriation) -- I am a Latina, not a fan of hers, and I, too, feel that they could have found someone else. She works very hard (great work ethic!), I'll give her that, but I don't like much more of her character from what I see and how she carries herself/behaves. That's just my opinion; we all have our own.

I think it reflects the sad state of the American music industry. In the past, there was such a wealth of talent to choose from, and lip-syncing any performance let alone an inauguration...these days tho, it’s not about the best singer, it’s about the one with the right image. So much talent going to waste, somewhere out there.

That's a weird take, since J.Lo came up in an era decades ago where being a great live vocalist wasn't the most important thing: you had to be a great performer. Even singers like Mariah had to step up and start dancing and doing costume changes and getting press. If anything, these days there's MORE scrutiny over vocals as everyone is online and pointing out if you hit a flat note

Gaga is first and foremost an outstanding vocalist (singer) and there should never be this insistance on comparing . Each artist brings something unique to their performance. Back in the day? Like Millli Vannli and The Monkeys? Why single out the American music industry? When was the last time at the Olympics Ceremonies they had live vocals? Technically the girl singing behind the stage while another girl lip synched on stage at the Beijing Olympics was one of the few times they had live vocals. Japan has vocaloids and many Japanese idols are there solely for looks. Do you think everyone in AKB48 can sing? Eurodance in the 90s was filled to the brim of models lip synching another persons vocals in the music video and in concert. While in the US you had people like Marnie Nixon have decades long NDAs while in India they make it no secret that the person you see in a musical isn't the one singing. There's always been studio trickery. Look up some old live performances and you would be surprised how many people from the 60s,70s and 80s could not sing. And they lip synched back then. I don't know where the Historical revisionism of It lip sync back in the day When you can look at videos from American bandstand, top of the pops and solid gold of rock bands apparently having wireless electric guitars 50 years ago lol. Or look at soul train and a disco song with a whole Orchestra is heard but only a single person is on stage.

Wow! I mention lip synching and people have gone crazy! Most artists lip sync for certain events, and circumstances it doesn't mean they are not good at what they do. When they always lip sync that is a different thing. What I said is not a personal attack on the artist you know!

As a singer myself, I really believe that she did not sing live. I suspected it and noticed some very subtle areas in particular that not very many people would notice. But she knows she didn’t, and her production team. I also noticed the fact that there were absolutely no closeups of the band playing while she was singing.

People say she can’t sing, but taken enough singing courses to see that she has vibrato, can do riffs and runs and great intonation! She is so under the microscope. People are so quick to trash her. That would make me a nervous reck! We have to ask ourselves, can we do that?

It depends. She explained in the video re:Katy Perry’s performance that sometimes people pre-record their vocals when conditions necessitate it. That is understandable. Backup vocals are also understandable and give a better sound to the whole performance. I only have a problem with it when there is no reason for the lip syncing and it’s a studio recording being played!! Like no different than the album tracks? Come on!

You do realize she had to sing the song before though? Even if it was recorded and maybe she had the comfort of a studio and more times to get it perfectly, she still had to sing it so no you and i couldnt do it and no one gave Beyonce shit when she lipped at Obamas inauguration.

I think she did sing it, in a studio w/all the bells & whistles in place to be played while she lipped it. They turn the mic down while she may very well be singing, but it's not the live voice you hear it's the recording, then they raise the volume back up for her to speak, then back down while the recording plays

it’s not live. You can tell because of the reverb on her voice when she is speaking in Spanish. You then hear the brief cutoff of her voice in the recorded before she sings ‘let’s get loud.’

Many times in this type of event, it is a requirement that the performances be pre-recorded, more if it is going to be televised, only to ensure their "perfection". I think it sounded beautiful even if it was lypsinc, Katy's performances could also be pre-recorded, and when people get very aggressive or want to discredit artist because of this, I remind them that even Pavarotti's last live performance was also lypsinc. I don't know the reasons why an artist decides to lypsinc or not, so I don't think about it much I just enjoy them.

As I was watching Jen live I thought she did a great job vocally which surprise me because I never heard her sing with such good tone and control live before. But when I saw it again, something look and sounded off vocally. There seem to be a disconnect. So I was perplexed. But after your critique, I understand why I was put off by her vocally. To be FAIR, this was actually a lovely vocal from HER. She's given her share of really bad vocal performances (live or not). But this isn't nearly as bad as MOST of these comments make it. But I've realized that JLO's just everybody's favorite punching bag.

Hi Georgina, you confirm what I was thinking from the first instant I watched it "live". Nothing against JLo, but the fade in of the backing track in the beginning and then the difference between her speaking voice en pre-recorded vocals made me roll my eyes. And the comparison with Lady Gaga's sound is noticeable. We all have to be honest she is not one of the best singers, saw her live a couple of times. Shows are great but her vocal "techniques"/capabilities are not my thing. Ok for studio but not live. She looked great and the backing track sounded good but she could have practiced some more and do justice to her name as a "performer". In my opinion she is a better actress and dancer than a singer.

@@nickt.8507 J.Lo has a mucusy voice. When your voice is naturally mucusy, You can't just suddenly hit a clean note. You have to clear your throat first before you can sing cleanly, and J.Lo didn't clean her throat- She just kinda flipped in and out of it.

I say that at least 85% of the whole song is lip sync. Also she is more someone to make a show moved you know ... like the super bowl. We must also recognize that she is not the only one who has made a lip at a very important event there is a list of great singers like Mariah and Beyonce for example

She also lipsyncs, as does Beyoncer but Beyonce and Jlo can entertain. Mariah hasn't had a good live vocla performance in over a decade. Jlo is still dancing and performing like she's 25. x

As a pretty much everyday practaSING singer of "sorts" i can def tell JLO DEF CAN sing! Its not un-common for singers to have a pre-recorded back up track if their not 100% sure n confident of their vocal abilities and thsts not saying they can't sing bcoz if they really couldnt sing they wuddnt of gotten as far in their careers if that was the case! I bet 99% of reg ppl who dont sing or find singing to be their strong points cuddnt even pull this off WITH a duplicate back up track! So anyone saying jlo cant sing well proove it or stfu bcoz she most definatly CAN!

Firstly, the whole point of this woman's channel is to critique vocals from an unbiased place, which she does. Secondly, if you precorded an autotuned version or yourself, you would have done "a great job", too. It wasn't horrible, but it also wasn't live, which is what most people expect at such an event.

I absolutely agree with you. She did a very good but let's be honest: the whole performance of hers was lip synced except for the Spanish speaking part, where - due to the audio/mic quality difference - she gave away, that she's not singing live. Not a bad performance though. I don't know if her voice is always that husky but maybe she lip synced cause she's sick at the moment? We will never know.

Her mic was turned off & the orchestra was playing as well. The people on the field could hear Whitney singing. Whitney wasn't just standing there lipping the Star Spangled Banner. I do think she sang part of it live! Even though I have known her to not be the best of live performance Singer! Mainly because her shows contain normally a lot of dancing performances and JLo simply can't always control her Voice as well, when she's dancing at the same time! Not every performer Can Do this though! Christina Aquilera can do them both great and Pink is amazing in her Live Performances and if anyone really never Lipsyncs then that is Lady Gaga ! I remember her making a promise to her Fan's, during one of her 1st Concerts, that she will always perform and sing live! Her words were pretty much like "I do not give my paying Fans a Performance where half of it is lipsynct! That's not me and I have a Voice to be heard!" something like that! And she always stuck to her promise, as far as I have been able to see and hear!

I didn't think she sang live either. Considering the fact that they were outside in very cold weather, it understandably would've impacted their vocals. Even Lady Gaga didn't sound perfect. However when I heard JLo sing, her vocals sounded way to clear for her to actually be singing outside live in extremely cold weather, and moving around the way she did . Considering the fact that JLo is the one with the weaker voice between the two of them, I was thinking if Lady Gaga sounded less than perfect, JLo should've sounded like complete crap. Also with technology the way it is, I am more than positive they make microphones specifically for artists who lip sync, so that it won't be as noticeable.

I always know if someone sings live or not. Live performances have this raw quality to them, where you can hear the breathing, where as a recorded track is too perfect. JLO didn't sing live. It's way too clean cut..no breathing, and the mic was way too close to her where if she was singing live it would sound horrible, too loud.
