As I recall it was a request from Meryl Streep, as she wanted it to sound more honest, and not have any of the cast worrying about their voices. It worked because the entire cast and producer etc have said they are happy to do a third movie.

All the villagers (in the movie and the on-stage version) represent the chorus in traditional (like ancient lol) Greek drama. That's why they all did the weird laugh when Donna said something like "it's like a weird trick of fate" and why they're ALWAYS around ❤
@steamdespair9189

Okay that's a better explanation than what I thought that they were the last vestiges of the Greek gods... hence the Aphrodite fountain eruption at the wedding reception. lol
@PhilomenaPhantomheart
@PhilomenaPhantomheart Месяц назад
@steamdespair9189 actually you're right. They're meant to be the olympian gods getting up to modern mischief and the fountain errupting is the return of the flow of good energy to the island to show that prosperity returns now that Donna's heart is open again. So yes, in a way they're a greek chorus representation, but they're confirmed by the producers of the musical from all the way back to the original on stage performances that they're the Greek Gods. So in a way you're both right.

I recall seeing some interview with Amanda Seyfried around the time Mamma Mia released when she said she had been approached by either Benny Andersson or Bjorn Ulvaeus (or both) about creating a pop album. She would sing songs he (or they) wrote. She also said she didn't feel confident enough in her voice to even consider the offer, and respectfully declined. Funny thing is, there was a RU-vid video for Vanity Fair, where Amanda Seyfried rewatched scenes from her films (Mamma Mia, Les Miz, Mean Girls & others), and she said the biggest problem with Mamma Mia was not feeling confident in her voice as she hadn't done a lot of singing when she got the job. That, and the hellacious choreography of the entire "Voulez-Vous" sequence that was a nightmare. Yet, she also did Les Miz and Mamma Mia 2... Pierce Brosnan does some singing of Irish songs in the drama "Evelyn" (2002), and in the film he also lets loose with his real accent (as Pierce is Irish).

Part of the charm of the ensemble in this movie is that they're really leaning into the "greek chorus" trope, which is appropriate since they're in Greece! This is why everyone is extra nosy and laughing in unison and things like that, plus the comment "it's very greek". A subtle thing but I thought very funny and effective

the second you said you'd never seen this movie i knew you'd love it bc girlhood and girl power and mother-daughter moments!! it's literally my favorite movie ever and every scene with sophie and donna means so so much to me because of how much it reminds me of my relationship with my mom (even though i do have one present dad lmao), everything is just so precious and loving and wholesome. i adore all things mamma mia

My mom and Grandma saw the live version in Vegas and the three of us saw it in the theater together and it was the perfect movie to watch together. I remember mom and I singing a long (loudly) to the dvd. This movie definitely has a special place in my heart

I think the company (Lionsgate) claims the reactions to the Hunger Games so it's hard to react to it... Because if they claim it, RU-vid blocks it. And if it's not blocked, it's demonetized...

My father/daughter dance at my wedding was this version of ‘Slipping Through My Fingers.’ It’s so beautiful & was very fitting because my dad is the person that got me into ABBA & we saw this movie in theaters together 🥰

another thing I've noticed (and I LOVE) about this movie is the fact that none of the characters are bad people. Like sure, they make mistakes, but there aren't any villains or anything like that. It just gives the movie such a lighthearted feel

Same! My dad has the ABBA Gold Album and I remember him playing this album almost every single day when I was young. Dancing Queen was the first song on that album and every time I hear that piano slide, I knew that my dad was in his ABBA mood during my childhood!

Side note, I think the nosiness and interaction. of the chorus in this, is a little nod to Ancient Greek theatre and the location it’s filmed. where the chorus were a conduit between the audience and the action happening on stage. They hold space to be a reaction live on screen, much like our own in the moment 😁
