In this video, I react for the first time to the viral performance of "Rich Men North Of Richmond” by Anthony Oliver. In this video, I analyse his performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This country-inspired song echoed throughout the masses in an incredible way so I really had to check it out!

It's extremely disingenuous and not the least bit insulting to reduce this man's talent and success to the now extremely tired trope of "russian trolls". Because yes, it must absolutely be mostly trolls that make up that view count, absolutely none of them have been real people in countries other than the United States, and of course, none of them are selling out tickets to see him in real life because the message in his music is so genuine and resonates so well with all of us that still have a brain and functioning heart. Christ almighty the level of cognitive dissonance required to see Russian trolls everywhere is almost unbelievable.

The word "divisive" is a media slur for anti-establishment. Oliver Anthony points out that the conflict isn't between Political Party Brand A versus Political Party Brand B. 12:19 - Well said. I think it's important to focus on the majority of the song that is a common experience these days rather than getting pushed away by whatever small section of the lyrics doesn't resonate. He's also not a politician, he worked his ass off in industrial jobs before *fracturing his skull on the job* and having to switch to sales. "I sit pretty dead center down the aisle on politics and always have." 13:02 - Another awesome point, thank you.

Perhaps it may clear up any misunderstanding to know that his reference to being obese was not "fat-bashing", rather he was explaining that there are many people in the US that take advantage of the welfare system while so many others who need help are unable to get basic necessities such as food and shelter. The lyrics, "Taxes ought not to pay for your bag of fudge rounds" speaks to this very problem. Thank you for sharing and shining!

I appreciate the artists speaking of taking advantage of the welfare system but he chose a group to represent that and shamed them. If we were to create a comparison of your skills at this we would unequivocally say they are at a Dimash level. Of course there are many very knowledgeable vocal pros doing something similar to what you do, but very few do it in such a captivating way that will leave non-vocalists (and non-musicians even) completely entranced and going away actually more knowledgeable about every aspect of a song and music in general. When I first heard this. One of the things that really dragged me in was just the recording. He is just singing in the woods. You can hear the sound travel. You can hear the insects. Its really something honest. So much music today is so produced, and layered its impossible to say where any of it comes from. And that really had me right from the start. The lyrics also has many.. its well written. The lyrics tries to be smart, dancing around topics that can be tricky. Also why some of them have been misunderstood. Like the Rich men north of Richmond. Because Richmond used to be the capital of the Southern states in the American civil war. See I dont know if that plays a role in him choosing this line. But thinking about it I just feel he used it for the word play it is, Rich Men. Richmond. and The politicians is all up north from there. But it does leave the ability for people to wonder. Same with him talking about obese. Is he saying its a shame that people who really suffer, being homeless ( Something the US suffers under, having more homeless people than any developed nation in the world ) is not getting the help they should. While people who has wealth, and the ability to eat and a home gets bailed out by the state. And the richer you are, the more help you get. Because the US is also the country with most corruption among the developed nations. Or does he mean that obese people are just dragging the state down, and instead of spending the economy on such things it, it should be used elsewhere. It can be understood in both ways. And he does not really clarify in the song one way or the other, again leaving it up to people to gather the meaning they hear. I hope its the first. Because I agree its a damn shame, that the rich gets more and more from the state, while people suffering and being sick, living on the street gets nothing but the end of a police stick. If its an attack on obese people, I dont really like it. Sure there are problems with it, that has to do with the state, and how we learn to consume food, what we learn to ease, and ease of access to food. That should be improved. But to just make the claim obese people are a burden to the welfare system, is something that is more harmful than helpful.
@sanzalure6091
@sanzalure6091 10 месяцев назад
I do not think think this song is against welfare or against obese people. First Oliver talks about people on the streets having nothing to eat (and no welfare since no address), second he talks about the cheaters milking welfare and third he talks about young people ending their lives because they're tired of being kicked down. You can't take the second part out of the first and third without changing the meaning of the whole thing. This song is about the cheaters at the top and the cheaters at the bottom, both of them sucking the life out of people like you and people like me. In my opinion the song has nothing to do with the left or the right, it is about the unfairness of the rich men getting all the wealth while those people who produce this wealth get none of it. The left is supposed to be the political party that defends the poor against the rich. Since the Democrats regularly defend the rich against the poor, we can conclude that there is nothing left of the left in the Democrat party.

Food stamps is an absolutely broken, exploited system and this is knowledge that is readily available to lower working class people as they'll know of many first hand examples of both its exploitation and failure to actually serve any potential reasonable application. I worked at a grocery store starting at 16 that did most of its business in food stamps and the vast majority of families had more money for groceries than my working class family ever had. When my stepdad got cancer and couldn't work, my family was denied food stamps and then just a few years later, I see obese people spending an obscene amount of money of buggies full of junk (and not just a couple of people, but most of the people who had food stamps). And then I'd carry out these groceries to brand new Cadillacs, see people selling their food stamps at 50 cent to the dollar or to buy drugs and buying beer and tobacco with the "cash" version of their food stamps. And then after seeing this completely unfair, arbitrary application of welfare I got a further taste when my friends eighty something year old grandmother was given $25 a month when she was a woman who'd worked in the mills all her life even well past the age of retirement. Welfare is nothing more than a way for the state to create dependent, docile people which is why they wont help the working class and people with too much pride to become dependent on the states teet (or too old). This is what he's speaking on, hence the comparison between the situation of the homeless and those who abuse the food stamp system.
@mattijohansen3471
@mattijohansen3471 10 месяцев назад
@@AcidAdventurer That is what YOU think he means. Neither of us speak for him. But also, what I hear is a failed system, as so often with the US. The corrupt system, that does not work is at fault. As with so many things in the US, bad systems are in place that waste money, because doing better things is not getting done. Often because companies pay politicians not to have them done. But you should put your energy into hating on the system. Because its the system and not the people who create the issues you have with it. The people have no power to stop it, or change it. Its not their fault its there, or that it does not work. Its the government, and how public poltics is generally done in the US. There is a reason, despite on paper having so much money, still is the nation in the developed world with most corruption, most homeless people, places with more poverty than 3 world countries, including lack of electricity and water. UN have deemed certain places in the US, worse than African war zones in terms of living standards. Dont blame the people. blame the system who have all the tools to fix these things. But does not.

@@AcidAdventurer Thank you for sharing this. Clearly there are honest people who don't abuse welfare. But we're not talking about them, and Oliver Anthony is also not taking about them. People who abuse welfare often use those who don't as a shield to hide their misconduct. They are the ones this song is talking about.

I have never heard anyone dissect lyrics and vocal keys to this detail, BUT, I hear you and have learned something. I think you are overlooking the message here.

Thank you for your reaction to Oliver Anthony. song love his song I. Love independent artists that are not afraid to speak to truth. I realize you're from Great Britain and you don't understand all of politics in this country just as I don't understand the politics of your country? But you can still relate to the song and you can still have a great reaction. Thank you keep up the good work. By the way I love the red hair?
