Beth Gibbons doesn’t do the sort of over the top, in your face emotion of someone like Adele or Yebba. Hers is an ache rather than a wrenching pain. You don’t get a shotgun blast of pain to the face, rather you feel the pain pulling at you from underneath. It’s so much more subtle and less dramatic. Nobody can do this quite like she can. It’s just amazing.

I definitely Did enjoy the video, Beth, by watching it on my big tv in front of me while... playing with my drumsticks on my drumpad. Seriously though, Im a drummer myself and I do have perfect pitch (which is both a blessing and a curse, when youre the only one with it in your underground cover band), so your analysis actually made me think how maybe vocals, which are emotionally spread all over, actually signify the singer showing how good of an actor s/he really is, because s/he Actually is living through/portraying a character vocally at the moment captured in those lyrics. No wonder this is so special and why I only love singers like Jeff Buckley, ... and pretty much it, but I might have to Finally dig into Portishead's discography. Not that there arent enough Vocalists who I also adore, but none of them are of the modern mainstream period, and none of them have touched me in the way Buckley does. This, however, seems ripe for examining. No, I dont know why I became a honey-bee right there at the end... Anyway, thanks for this, because wherever you are, or whatever may come, you are my friend for showing me this.

For me with this song, the sweet spot is when the bass guitar kicks in, it's so gentle, emotional, soulful and perfectly fills the void when Beth stops singing. Beth's voice is sensational and how she uses it in a more emotional and delicate way rather than just trying to project is such a powerful thing, it makes these such a unique band and makes them still sound fresh as ever! I love how they play together too, it's almost telepathic how perfectly in step with each other they are. Dummy is still one of the best albums to ever come out of this tiny island though and barely anybody realises how important it is!

I mean Portishead was my favorite music for many, many years, that combination of Soul, Scratch, Jazz, Bett's emotion when singing, the tracks, I mean everything... and without a doubt Jeoff Barrow is an impressive combination of tones and sounds. spend hours listening to the same thing without getting tired, because it's just great, and then I listened to Psychedelic Trance Music, and my bases were always classical music, I don't listen to that music anymore, only Gospel music, but I know how to recognize the talent that God gives to the people... Thank you very much for sharing your analysis.. 🙋🏼💜

One of our finest female singers is Beth Gibbons. On tracks like this she never tries to outplay the music, she uses her vibrato to compliment the quivering strings and doesn't resort to histrionics. On more electronic tracks she snarls and screeches, curling words around the notes and banging them high notes like a steam whistle about to blow! Divine. Underrated. Beautiful.

I love that you cover 90's 'grunge' bands and triphop, like this. These are my two favorite genres.

Amazing song. First time I heard it was at the ending scene of the 1995 film "Little Criminals" and ever since it's stuck with me. Instantly recognisable by just the first note and then all I can picture is the scene from the film lol.
