This woman and this band deserve to be better remembered. I miss them on the reaction channels. Their music is so complex and vast... My favorite song is The Rapture. But you must listen tracks like Not Forgotten, Stargazer, Forever, Israel, Obsession and Kiss them for me. And her last solo album, Mantaray, is full of passion, talent and heart. And seemed a farewell album unfortunately. The post is long. But this woman and this band deserve it.
I love Siouxsie Sioux. Robert Smith (the Cure) was her lead guitarist for a little while, and she was one of the post-punk/alternative pioneer. You may also acknowledge that she kind of started the "gothic" trend. But most of all, the best part is, that the band Siouxsie and the Banshees was conceived during a Roxy Music concert, which testifies to their good musical taste.
That's true but the guitar masters of this band were John McKay and John McGeoch RIP . Her earliest stuff 78-81imo is undoubtedly the best and untouchable compared to later stuff 👍👍🤘🤘
I remember reading Robert Smith's description of the experience of being a Banshee, and how it was completely different than going on stage as frontman of The Cure. As a Banshee, he reported feeling powerful, not despondent and morose.
The first time that I actually listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees. Of course I knew of them but never have taken the time to actually listen to them. And I've taken the time to read Siousie's Wikipedia page. One part that particularly stood out was that they basically founded a band and spontaneously played on a festival the same month. Despite not having any songs and not knowing any songs. They then improvised stuff on their instruments while Siouxsie sang The Lord's Prayer. If that's not a courageous move I don't know what is. I'm so totally impressed by that attitude.
@@asbocazbo The Bertie who lived in Plaistow grove in 1969 near David Bowie and who was loaned the Space Oddity single by his mother? Also the same Bertie who was thrown out of the bar with siouxsie when you were playing her dog and she asked for a bowl of water for you ? If so i have to admire the nerve of both of you!
Until a herd of singers influenced by her came along, Siouxsie had a unique style. There were no female singers before her who were similar. The closest may be German singer Nico, who sang on the first Velvet Underground LP in the late 1960s. There are some echoes of Grace Slick and Julie Driscoll, but that's about it. Siouxsie really did things her own way.
I think that Spellbound is the absolute pinnacle of Siouxsie & the Banshees single-wise (and they made a lot of great singles). Coincidentally, just a couple of weeks ago I learnt the main guitar to this song via another RU-vid channel. Well, to be honest, I didn't actually "learn" it, I was able to play most of it but not other bits -- the sadly departed John McGeogh is up there with Johnny Marr as an incredibly intricate genius-level guitarist. So underrated. I can't even get close, and I'm a fairly good player (well, I thought I was!). And with Budgie on drums, Siouxsie had the most amazing band behind her. Great song. The perfect choice.
You are the first reacts vocal channel to do anything post-punk, goth or industrial. You were subscibed but now I'm going to patreon you in due course - be still my heart if you tackle Bauhaus, the Sisters or Cure...
I found some Bauhaus and Joy Division on another channels but their reaction is the same: it seems that they don't understand that kind of music. I mean, it is not a question of taste, the problem is comprehension. They wait for a big guitar solo, regular structure of songs, classic rock vocal range, etc. They listen to Bela Lugosi's Dead, Atmosphere and such things and simply desaproves 'cause seems to be things from another media. A media that they are unable to assimilate.
After Siouxsie The Cure must follow... Robert Smith... I saw them on their last tour a few years ago and they sounded even better than previous shows. Please do a video on the live show available here!
Love love love Siouxsie And the Banshees! Peepshow was the first album of theirs that I heard many years ago - I remember getting instantly hooked on her voice. Great band.
I was a teenager in the early 80's, and this takes me right back. I was a bit of a punk/goth at the time and The Banshees were one of my favourite bands. Thanks Beth, this was a real trip down memory lane for me :-)
One thing about punk is that you can cover the entire history of the genre without once bringing up a male-fronted band. Women have been there since the beginning.
Did you really just react to the Goddess Siouxsie Sioux?!?! You've really been digging into my teens lately. I love Siouxsie so much that I named my beloved king snake after her ❤
She says laughter like an American but she says entranced as a British singer. Very different singer to most. I'm glad you did this one. Good choice Beth and happy that you are open minded enough to listen to someone like Siousxie! Ha nice work 😄
One of the top ten most original goth psychedelic bands to come out of that period. They have some classic and ingenious songs for sure. Drummer had a style all his own.
I've witness all birth of my 5 children, but seeing the Banshees live was absolutely the most mesmerising experience of my life. There was a magic that not comes thru the cameralense. The locals were absolutely boiling. Pure woodoo-sesions😍😍😍
I love Siouxsie and The Banshees. She also formed the band The Creatures with Budgie (the drummer) and did a solo album called Mantaray. Another interesting singer is Nina Hagen from Germany. She has a very wide range and started out as punk, then did some disco, pop, opera, and Hindu songs. If you get a chance, listen to "Born in Xixax", "Hand Grenade", "My Sweet Lord", or "Naturtrane".
I've always loved this song and the accompanying video, one of the best ever shown on MTV. I remember hearing once that Siouxsie had to take time off because she had strained and damaged her voice. Annie Lennox had the same problem too, and watching her sing live in those days you could just see her straining her voice to the breaking point.
She's bang in her mid-twenties here....Something about this has always seemed to capture the raw power of a person someone in their 20's, where that person is also dropping their hammer right on the sweet spot: aligned with their destiny, and free to follow it. It's incredible - anybody lucky enough will recognise: it's like momentum. Momentum, without end, nor limit, nor mercy - as inevitable as Gravity: thy will, be done. I don't believe a person in their teens could possibly have quite the authority - meanwhile a person in their 30's could not help but seem to be trying, while this is the effortless assertiveness of full expression, of people in their 20's.... Amazing - like watching and hearing a sun condense and ignite in front of you.
As a fan of Siouxie & the banshees I’d recommend listening to live from royal lord hall siousxie and the banshees so your hearing a live performance ….as the live version of spellbound , Israel are so amazingly powerful performances , Robert Smith is filling in as the guitarist for this tour and this performance was captured in surprisingly high quality video and audio ….well worth the watch …as this the best performance i have found of 2 of my favorite siouxie songs ,another band you probably would like if this type of music is something you like would be the Glove try the songs Like an Animal , a blues in drag , punish me with kisses …the last one is my favorite …… the band consisted of Robert Smith & Steve Sevrin and is awesome
Omg, my sister got me into Souxsie back in the early 80s. I'm so happy you included her. Rumour has it that Robert Smith (of The Cure) was originally her bassist and back-up vocalist. Not entirely sure about that, but it would make total sense.
Ok. I lied. A forest is my favourite. This is one of the best songs written by mankind. Let alone Robert Smith. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9NuNPc160K0.html
Brazil is in love with you 😍!! Could you react to one of our greatest names from music that is Ivete Sangalo? She is definitely the biggest one currently and she is a pretty beautiful contralto. I have some music suggestions: Eva/Beleza Rara/Quando a Chuva Passar. We would love to see you talking about her 😍
I’ve been in love with Siouxsie since I was a wee lad growing up in America in the 70s & 80s. (It’s an Anglophile™️ thing.) 😍😍😍 *also, I love a good analysis from a professional; It helps me understand why I appreciate something on the level that I appreciate something.
In one of their songs, Head Cut, she does this almost bird like sound. It's not quite a scream or yell, it's to musical. I noticed because a game I play is releasing a crow character, and she makes the same sounds Siouxsie does in Head Cut.
Siouxsie and the Banshees are one of my favorite bands and Siouxsie Sioux is one of my favorite female vocalists-Interesting to hear her style dissected... Thanks! Stay healthy in 2021 :-)
Roars and ROCKS! Absolutely love your reactions because you bring something to this musical party. Sorry, but I must continue to share your links. Just must be done! x
Long known of the band, but never actually listened to them. This video inspired me to give them a listen, and I'm streaming their first album on Spotify right now. Sounds like very good post-punk music. Thanks for the introduction!
Nobody is going to vote on this artist Jinx Dawson started her band Coven In 1967 and she is still touring to this day. As a child she was trained in Opera. She signed with a major label 1968 she Release first album in 1969 , six months after its debut it was Banned and burned. She was fired and blacklisted to this. day. She still has a great voice I would say kind of a cross between floor Jensen and Lzzy Hale. In some ways the older has added to her voice. She might not be able to hit Mariah Carey high notes anymore, but... Over the past 50 years Her band Coven is released several albums One Tin Soldier was her biggest success. Jinx Dawson is one of the most underrated singers ever. I would love to see your reaction. And comments. I suggest reacting to Wicked Woman or The White Witch of Rose Hall from her 1969 album witchcraft destroys minds and reaps souls. One Tin Soldier has a super huge following,
My schoolmates had posters of Farrah Fawcett on their bedroom wall,I had siouxsie. Beth roars my fave scotswoman!Intelligent and open minded to all music,Love it.
Just watched your video and it was fantastic ! i saw this song by sioxusie on top of the pops in may 1981 and bought the 7 inch vinyl single for 99 pence. ! The term 'iconic' is bandied around so much now its almost meaningless. SIouxsie is a true icon and star. Her main period of commerical success was 1978 to 1995 but her legacy has never been forgotten and she has also never been given her due. I think this was because she was tough and probably made alot of enemies in the music industry. Sorry if im telling you what you already know. She is from Kent. Although she wrote most of the lyrics, this song was written by bassist and cofounder Steven severin. I think the inspiration was quite possibly the Hitchcock film of the same name. A few years ago i heard this played on radio 2 and the presenter described it as a tornado in a wind tunnel. I became a real fan in about 1985 when i was in my teens and started buying all the records. The same month as i first saw this , The human League, another group that i was obsessed with appearaed on totp singing the sound of the crowd. Ive only just discoverd your channel and dont know if you have coverd phil oakey but look this up it would be an interesting one maybe?
What you've got to consider is that Siouxsie had no musical background, she was one of a group of young people who hung around the Sex Pistols and were inspired to form their own bands. Her singing voice wasn't something she had worked on or practiced over many years, it's just the way she sang. It just happened to become one of the most distinctive female voices of all time.
I like how you analyse individual elements of the song. If you like dark music, try their song "monitor" for added darkness watch it with the official video based on 1984.
When I saw this video from Top of The Pops, I couldn't help but feel it was a bit of lip syncing, but that doesn't affect the vocal analysis of this video. I have seen proper live performances by Siousxie though, and she is brilliant live.
