She became a trainee pretty late for an idol at the age of 21, with little to no vocal training prior (Yea she loves to sing but didn't really plan on becoming a singer until later). That's still incredible for how far she's come cos she shed blood and tears to get to where she is now.

I find it interesting how people who studies vocal performance can hear the difference between chest voice, mixed, etc. I studied music performance but as a flute player, so I can hear if there’s issues with pitch or inconsistencies with vibrato but I think it’s cool how y’all can hear the different voices.
As a violin player i can relate. 40 hours of practice a day taught me to detect pitch and listen for sound quality, vibrato, all those. But I'm amazed at how voice teachers can differentiate the voices :) kudos to y'all

I really wonder how good Solar is when she is this good fooling around and making dubious decisions sometimes. You can notice in crack videos she has no shame and loves to be loud. That's adorable and I love her for it, but I feel she could be world top maybe? The guts and attitude of not caring for critics also shows in her posting this video as is. In her earlier pole dancing video she is perfectionistic as hell, taking days training and practicing (and still not half the time it would take others). This has such a cool fooling around vibe especially with the papers in hand. It's like a behind the scenes practicing video, not a finished performance one, right? The first "error" you pointed out and later another last syllable of a slow line was rushed, you see her totally focused on preparing for the next belt, she just loves them. She's my bias, but I think this is what you meant in an earlier video of overdoing it. Any normal person would do her utmost best when picking a song like this. She doesn't care, she just does what she loves and does it like it's nothing. About not caring, did you notice the rockstar part in HIP? Many people thought the two color style was too extreme (don't get it, but probably Korea never had a punk era), and the band are two drag queens. She does what she wants again!

I would be happy if you did an analysis of a Moonbyul cover of the song "trying to say goodbye". Moonbyul wanted to be vocal, but they said she wasn’t good so she didn’t have vocal training, it upset her for many years. Recently she has been training and showing her vocals with more confidence, her voice is very unique I never heard anything like it

Hey can I suggest if you want to hear a different side to Solar’s vocals then listen to her version of Nada Sou Sou and It’s Been a Long Time. Solar had a project album a few years ago where she took classic songs and did her own arrangements/versions of them and those two highlight her vocals very well. A much softer and more interesting vocal not focused on belting

She said WheePup isn't the type of person to get nervous, but before singing this song she would shake and be nervous because it was a difficult song but that she did a good job and the fans loved it. You can pronounce Solar any way you like. The stage name came from her trying to figure a stage name based on music notes 😂 she almost went with DoReMi but ended up choosing SoLa(r) since she sings the high notes. Most people say the stage name came from her birth name which isn’t true but a funny coincidence.
She did choose SolLa for the note names (we know there was even a period of a couple of days when she was considering MiPa); we don't know who had the stroke of genius to connect that to the Sun in her name and make the English spelling into Solar instead of Solla, but I think that makes both sources equally a factor in Solar being "Solar".

I suppose it's helpful to check out a practice but I would have preferred the actual performance at KCON LA. This vid came out afterwards cuz otherwise it would have been a spoiler but she clearly filmed it when she was rehearsing for KCON - she wasn't even off book. Imo all that loud belting was part of her rehearsal process. As you said, when you rehearse something you have to try different things. By pushing it to the limit she establishes how far she can go and fully explored the volume and emotional range before finalizing her artistic choices for the performance. Glad you didn't try to compare Solar & Siyeon. At KCON she preceded the song with a video about a girl who dreams of being a singer but is told not to by her parents, which is Solar's own story. I think Solar performed Speechless at KCON because she wanted her message to be understood by the English speaking audience. Imo she was speaking for all the young kpop artists at KCON and back in S Korea who are determined to achieve their dream and have their voices heard around the world.

and re. her name, if you're speaking english its perfectly fine to say it the same way you would say the English word. if you'd like to pronounce it the same way as Koreans do, you can use that intro (so-la-shi-do!) as a guide. or if you'd prefer, her real name (yongsun or yong) will also be perfectly understandable 👍
Hi Sir Austin! If you are looking for a "boy group" with authentic beautiful vocals, I would like to recommend checking out the band, ONEWE. Onewe is also under RBW entertainment (same company as Mamamoo). They have played as a band for Mamamoo for a number of times in awards shows and their concert. Their vocalist, YONGHOON, is an AMAZING VOCALIST with a very wide range and very very stable high notes! I bet you'll enjoy analyzing his vocals and techniques. To start off, you can watch their debut song - REMINISCE ABOUT ALL. It's a slow ballad focusing mostly on the vocals and little instrumentation. So you will really get a grasp of the vocalist's range right away. For other recommendations, here are their other title tracks: - REGULUS - Q (feat. Hwasa of Mamamoo) - END OF SPRING - PARTING (new song, they released it yesterday, September 24) I'd like to recommend their other MVs and covers but will do it if you start checking them out already. Ailee (soloist, did a lot good immortal song performances and also has good music) Sohyang (soloist and if voice coaches start to get into kpop it's one of the first artists to be mentioned. It like kuderbeijan, they have a really big range and good control of their voices, Arirang alone and everyone are 2 good songs to listen to) Eunji of Apink, she is also one of the better singers in all the kpop idol groups. Solji of Exid, also Hani but not as powerful as Solji but still awesome. Taeyeon of SNSD / Girls Generation. I like a lot of her solo songs like Spark or I. She also did a sub unit with just a few of the other snsd members, OH GG with the song Lil touch. I'm a little bit gg biased xD but the guys also have Amazon vocals. Try their rising sun live video. Or max changmin featuring and super juniors don't Don live at concert. It's awesome. That's everything can't remember more as of now xD of course there are so much more 😁 Maybe someone wants to contribute some mor artists 😁

As Solar's speaking voice is also kinda loud so when she bealts you can clearly hear that and she often pulls her mic back a lil while live performances,cuz her high notes are literally loud. But I love them!!! Can even listen to it forever.
Hey, I don't think I have ever been this early before. I love Solar, and don't stress about pronouncing her name, I'm pretty sure you are pronouncing it correctly. In Korean, if she says Solar and then says another word beginning in a consonant, she will make the ending R sound much softer to make the language flow better. If she doesn't say anything after her name, or the next word she says starts with a vowel, then she will pronounce the R at the end a lot stronger. I think that is where some of the confusion is coming from in her name pronunciation. Also, something to keep in mind is that k pop just means popular music from Korea. A lot of negative stereotypes have been attached to the label of k pop and it is really important to recognize that they aren't necessarily correct. I find it really interesting that these stereotype about k pop persist, despite the fact that the two most popular k pop acts worldwide in the past decade have had musical control and actually cover important social topics. Psy's Gangnam Style was a social parody song, parodying the people who live and party in Gangnam, the clubbing and new money district in Seoul. And BTS have been releasing political and socially conscious music for seven years. In 2016, BTS risked their entire career to perform a political protest song on live television. They were protesting against and directly challenging the then corrupt South Korean Government during a period of severe political instability and censorship. The government they were protesting against was blacklisting artists who spoke out against them, making it impossible for them to work in South Korea. If BTS had been blacklisted, their career would have been destroyed. They released the song and performed in multiple times on television anyway. So even artists who are strongly associated with negative aspects of K pop by the mainstream Western media and online spaces might actually be quite a bit different if you peak beneath the surface. But, I know you are mostly here for the vocals, and while I love BTS for their rap and their lyrics, there are other artists who make me melt with their voices, here are some recommendations. Slightly inaccurate on the name part. Her stage name _in Korean_ is 솔라 (Sol La), as in the fifth and the sixth note in solfège; there is no ending R sound. "Solar" is her _English_ stage name, relating to her real name 용선 (YongSun/YongSeon) containing the syllable that sounds similar to the English word "sun", and is pronounced as the corresponding English word (like in "solar eclipse"). Since different English dialects pronounce this word differently, you can hear different variants of it; none of it is wrong. (Well, soLAR is weird. :P )

So as you know, I love Mamamoo and DC. When I listened to Siyeon's version and Solar's version, I definitely prefer Siyeon's version. I think it's cleaner, but this could be that Solar's version is a one take with no editing. Siyeon's version has definitely been edited to pick out the perfect ones that she recorded. I still think that Solar and Siyeon has such powerful voices. Regardless, they both sang beautifully. It's one of the most impressive vocal performances I've ever heard, and she is as talented as anything I've heard from Mamamoo.
