The orchestra were hired not being told they were playing a new beattles song. They had no idea. They were just given the sheet music. The video is craftily edited to look like Paul McCartney is in the booth listening to them playing when In reality they recorded it without him

It's hopeful, and sorrowful all at the same time. Lennon always wrote music that was deep, but slightly melancholy. It's basically a Christmas gift to the world. It's not hard be emotional. Because there's always the what if's on the Band getting together had we not lost John in 1980. Even if it was a one off studio album and no touring. Thank you lads for everything. There is a really touching back story. Think of me now and then, my old friend was the last thing John said to Paul as Paul left the Dakota not long before John’s death. You can google the article and the eerie coincidence of Carl Perkins including the same phrase in a song he wrote a few years later to thank Paul for his hospitality at the end of an 8 day visit. It’s like there was some sort of cosmic thread connecting this song, the parting moment at the Dakota, Carl Perkin’s visit and the eventual discovery of the demo. It’s like the tape needed to be found, and how ironic that Peter Jackson would be responsible for finding John’s precious voice for one last Beatles recording.

But they had the tape since 1994. It had 4 songs on it, Real Love, Free as a Bird, Grow Old With Me and Now and Then… the first two were done as Beatle songs for Anthology, Grow Old With Me had been released by Yoko on Milk and Honey and Ringo would record it not too long ago and Now and Then was so bad with the sound that Harrison called it rubbish so they shelved it until technology was able to separate John’s voice from the backing music.

Thank you for your moving reaction to this final Beatles song. Hearing John's voice sing a new and beautiful song was so emotional for me. And then to see George play the guitar. It brought them all 'back to life' for a time. Hearing that John's last words to Paul were 'Remember me old friend, now and then' makes this song even more meaningful and explains the reason Paul didn't give up on it. Paul and Ringo singing in the present day is so wonderful. I became a Beatles fan at age 13 when I first heard I Want to Hold Your Hand on the radio (before they arrived in the US for the Ed Sullivan show). It's hard to explain how they changed the world from the conventional boring 'respectable' society to a new freedom of expression including in clothing, hairstyles etc. I went with a group of friends to see A Hard Day's Night at the movie theater. When the movie started a teenage boy stood up and asked the audience to make an agreement to scream through the film the first time, but for the next screening we should actually listen to the movie--and we did! My sister and I got to see the Beatles perform at a stadium during their last tour. I'm sure many fans like me think of the Beatles as family. The ending of the video showing them at different ages gave me chills. Thanks again for your reaction.

This also makes me a little sad since John & George are no longer with us (John was murdered in 1980 & George died of cancer in 2001). But I like the video showing them all together. I am sure Paul & Ringo loved doing this tribute & it must have brought back a lot of fond memories for them. I was a 15/16 year old who watched John, Paul, George and Pete.....in many of the lunchtime sessions in The Cavern in 1961/1962, we knew they were going places. I was in the audience the day Mr Brian Epstein came to see what all the fuss was about. Then Ringo joined and the circle was complete. They had an aura thats never been seen before. They were ours, they belonged to us in Liverpool. It was only a matter of time that we knew we would have to share them with the world and we we're happy to do so. They split, i wept like a baby. Then we lost John. The biggest tragedy in musical history. I cried for weeks. The Dream Was Over. Then George passed, another loss....and more tears. Now, all these years later, 2023 they're bigger now than they've ever been. Seeing them together in this video, i have shed more tears. I've loved this quartet for 62 years and i was 78 on the 6th of November, still living in Liverpool and I'll love them til the day I pass away. I listened to it and it was better than I expected. A song that laid forgotten and hidden since 1977 'til 1995, and then it was the Beatles turn to demonstrate why they changed the world again with Now and Then!!

Awe - that is what strikes me here: a half century later and it sounds fresh and very clean. Perhaps "advanced technology" won't lead us to the zombie apocalypse, but to a synthesis of all the best that has led humanity to this point. The Beatles continue to show that they are the Prism - what came before flowed through them and all that has come after has been touched in some way by them and the genius that the Beatles Collaborative (including George Martin and his team) gave to the world, and continue to give. One of your Best, Beth!

In an interview years ago, Paul said that John's last words to him were "Old friend, think of me now and then." John was killed a few days later. How eerie is it that, a decade later, Yoko Ono gave the recording of this song to Paul.

Plus, that was George Martin's son who was conducting the orchestral parts, so that's another connection to the original era of the group!

This goes straight to the heart and it will get your feelings out of the cage.. the first time and this time.. it almost made me cry.. it's beautiful, sad, nostalgic.. I'm not sure how much it can be done about the beatles, but this song feels like a good closure of the whole beatles nostalgia and of course a strongly emotional homage to George and John from Ringo and Paul.. I bet you never stop missing them. now I want to cry...

And you were absolutely right about AI being used in the "right' way as opposed to the wrong way. This was a great example of the right way to use it. All that was done was to pull John's vocals out of a muddy mix (if you can call a song demo where it's a piano and vocals on a single track a "mix")

Apparently on the box that the cassette came in was written...For Paul. This is bitter sweet as I know it's the last Beatles song. That Beatles bow gets me every time. In the 80s I was privileged to be in a Beatles tribute band playing the George Harrison part. At the end of every show we would do that Beatle bow.

"I don't even want to analyze this." If I've learned one thing this past couple of years is that music has this power to bring out feelings you've been surpressing. Sometimes all you can do is feel it. It will make more sense than analyzing the lyrics or whatever.

This has brought me to tears. I'm feeling so many different emotions happy and sad. I recall being 8 years old when they came onto the Ed Sullivan Show. I remember my dad's reaction when He saw them. I was sitting on the floor in front of the TV and dad shouted out, turn that crap off! I'm not watching those long-haired freaks but my older sister's convinced him to let us watch! I was a big John Lennon fan till the day he died!

With this precious gift of a last Beatles song and its amazing, heartwrenching video, Peter Jackson joins George Martin and Billy Preston as a "5th Beatle". I am both so happy and incredibly sad that the Beatles were able say a proper goodbye to us with Now and Then..

Paul has said that these were the last words John said to him the last time they met in person in 1976 ‘Think of me now and then’. John then wrote the song in 1977 so it was clearly an idea going around his head. He then labeled the tape ‘For Paul’. We’ll never know for sure if he wrote the song for Paul, if it was thinking of a future collaboration, or if he just wanted Paul to hear it. Either way it feels so right that Paul, along with George and Ringo get to finish this off for him!

my teen years was spent in the 70s and i turned so many people on to the beatles in the 70s and 80s i lost count. (yes, as early as the 70s the beatles were beginning to be unappreciated and forgotten.) many would thank me later if they ran into me. many people said when john died in 1980 the first thing they thought of WAS ME! like all good things the beatles will eventually fade entirely into history. i just thank my lucky stars i was alive to enjoy the wonderful musical and social phenomenon known as "the beatles." thank you beatles for a lifetime of pleasure, great music, controversy and FUN! you helped make my life worth living.

Most reactions to this song are based on talking about the AI that was able to recreate Lennon's vocals or about the nostalgia, but one element that not a lot of people talk about is how awesome it was that the guitar part that we hear on this track is actually George Harrison, recorded before he passed away. And he recorded that, because they wanted this song to be on the 1995 Anthology album. But even though the song got cut from the album, due to the poor quality of the vocals, the guitar part still existed. So when you think about this song, it was really recorded in 3 different eras: 1970s, 1990s, present. That blows my mind.

I'm usually not a big fan of these kind of projects. It can easily become a "milking a dead cow"-thing. But they did a real great job making it a "legit" Beatles song, and it feels like it was a labour of love. So much incredible talent coming together - even separated by lots of years - for a last time is just heart-warming.

Why does this song aways bring tears? Here is what I got. At first it is tears of joy because by some miracle, we have a brand new beatles song, and it's good. Then it's sad tears because as they bow out, we realize that this is it. Really truely the end. (but they are going out on top!)

I was 3 years old when Beatlemania swept the U.S. and therefore Canada, where I live. My earliest memories of music are the Beatles songs that came on the radio, and the albums my older brother had. Hence, I have been a Beatles fan all my life, and, you're right, this song does feel like a goodbye. At the end of this video, I thought of John and George and had a bit of a weep.

I really enjoyed your reaction Beth! It’s a Gift to ALL of US! Paul really saw this through with Ringo. Peter Jackson did the editing in the Music Video. Giles Martin String Arrangements with Paul. Each Principle working on this are Maestro’s!!! The Beatles come to the End if their Long and Winding Road with an exquisite gift 🎁 and Homage to George and John, Paul, and Ringo! I’m 71 and feel Blessed to witness this from beginning to end! I bought “I Want To Hold Your Hand in January of 1964 at 11 years old! How Wonderful to see and hear young people enjoy the Beatles in 2023! Great Job Beth!!! ❤

❤😢🙏🏻-well done-I am a musician and I know how hard it is to go and find something for my cassette and clean it up and then play to it and of course bring up the tempo you have to. I wish they would go back and clean up Free As a Bird just to speed it up because you can hear so much of the cassette when it first came out of course I was so happy but now hearing this song, they need to go back and clean it up. Thank you again for this video bless you and bless the Beatles.❤
