I am Rebecca and I am one heck of a passionate vocal coach/singer/songwriter/impressionist/health/fitness/self- improvement/anything that makes me smile!! I love anything vocal/singing related and geek out on it every day. I want to motivate and inspire others to follow their dreams…corny? Well maybe but it’s true. So what’s motivating me?? I had a huge tumour removed summer 2017 and my ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tumour was the size of a 20 week baby!! However, despite not being able to walk for a couple of weeks, and feeling generally awful…. It has made me create and do what I love! It wasn’t an easy time but I won’t let fear dictate my life. I didn’t think ‘why me’, there are plenty of horrific issues people have to deal with…it’s not always smooth sailing. It’s true when you hear, ‘Life is short’, the crazy thing is, I am glad it happened…I appreciate life even more and practice gratitude everyday…It’s so easy to get caught up with the little things…and I do sometimes, but look at the bigger picture, will it matter in a year or two…?

Anneke van Giersbergen is the Godmother of them all. She basically started the whole 'female-fronted' metal scene in The Netherlands, in 1995, with The Gathering. She has been very valuable, not only artistically, but also for the Dutch independent music industry. Most names you hear in the comments, are from people she worked with, guided or inspired. So she is regarded as the Queen of Metal here. (She herself has been exploring other, and rather different genres in the past as well, not only metal). Now you know why Sharon is so proud to have her sing on stage with her.

I beg to differ. Anneke may have been the first to do it, but Tarja was the one to mainstream it. Anneke or not, without Tarja I don't think the scene would've been even noticeable.

The woman basically formed the path for other female vocalists in harsher subgenres. The Gathering had a lot of Doom in its early years and Anneke was with them by then (Mandylion for example).

Yes indeed, and I dare Rebecca to react to one of Anneke's signature live performances for a change. Try 'Travel' or 'On Most Surfaces' from The Gathering's TG25 show at Doornroosje. See if that helps understand why she's Devin Townsend's 'Metal Tinkerbell' and a true inspiration for an entire generation of rock/metal singer's in The Netherlands, incl. Floor.

Anneke van Giersbergen, the woman in black, is an absolutely phenomenal singer, she's always so smiley when she sings. She's done some really good acoustic songs that highlight how strong her voice is.

That's isn't true, I followed her from the beginning and she had some lessons but not much. She had to control the sweet high notes. But her voice is still incredible!

I agree! I've been a fan since the moment I found the video memories somewhere back in 2005. Sharon can really touch your heart with her voice, she has in some concerts started to cry. There's a very popular video with that that a fan recorded in the most recent tour. Wow, so epic and emotional version of "forgiven"

YES!!!!! I remember watching this for the first time. I was so excited when I saw Anneke come out, which added so much to this version of the song. And yes... every time I've seen and talked to Anneke, she is always smiling. She is probably the nicest person in music that I have met!! She sang a song from her band VuuR at ProgPower USA this past September called Freedom and had everyone in our group fighting back tears. She is soooooo good!!!

Something that might be of note to you: Sharon of Within Temptation was mostly self taught at the beginning of her career. Anneke had some classical training and obviously Floor, Tarja, and Simone are highly trained.

She's so amazing and such a good heart that when we started talking she said "look at you, you are beautiful!" I was shocked looking at her, the most beautiful voice and smile in the world saying that to me!!! Me! Simone did the same 10 years ago... But 10 years ago I was healthy and thought I wasn't that bad... She loved my cheek piercings, gosh. NETHERLANDS produces the best voices, beauty and kindness. My heart is feeling warm.

Thank you Rebecca. If you care to explore Within Temptation a bit further, you will find they experiment with a wide variety of sounds and guest vocalists. The Other Side of Me, from this same show, Dangerous, or And We Run are some of my favorites with guest vocalists. For pure WT, my recommendations would be Iron, Stand My Ground, or Angels.

Finally an important vocal coach’s reaction to one of the most unique voices in rock/metal: Sharon den Adel, from Within Temptation. You nailed it when talked about the brightness in her voice and its peculiar flute-like tones and colors. I mean, ive always felt just the same as you did about it, but seeing how instantly it was your comments about it, from a very professional vocal coach, that was awesome. I‘ve been forever intrigued in how she manages to put so much air in her voice... Please react to some others songs of theirs... My suggestion is “Within Temptation - Never ending story”. Sharon’s voice really shines though it.

Omg thank you for doing that, you nearly never see someone reacting to within temptation. If I'm allowed to suggest something, can you do paradise (what about us) by them? Yay! Finally you are reacting to Within Temptation. Sharon has such a beautiful and emotive voice. She does some things with her voice you don't hear with other singers, perhaps because she is known for never having had a singing lesson, instead she taught herself by listening to other singers. I guess sometimes natural talent is enough. I'd highly recommend you listen to the duet with Tarja "Paradise (What about us)" as well as "Mother Earth" (The live version from Black Symphony is great) and "Our Solemn Hour" (Metropole version or Black Symphony version are both beautiful.) Generally when reacting to Symphonic Metal bands you'll find the live versions even better than the studio ones, it seems to be a genre that attracts great live musicians. Thanks for this, Anneke is my favorite female singer, I think she's just lovely. And you mentioned how she was smiling... it feels like she is always smiling when she sings, unless it's a "sad song". Really, just check out any of her live performances (I mean in your own time, not as a reaction request). In particular, there's a bunch of videos on RU-vid of her playing solo, just her and her guitar, and singing songs not only from her past bands and solo works, but also stuff like "Jolene"... for example at "La Scene Bastille" in 2012, a small venue in France that holds like 300 people.

Anneke is wonderful! I recommend Strange Machines by The Gathering live at Pinkpop to see and hear more of her. She's one of the best metal vocalists imo. May I ask for more Nightwish as well? Your Is an Empty Hope to see the more aggressive side of the band and of Floor's vocals.
