This is the first tutorial in a series about vocal fry distortion. This video is intended for people who haven't yet found their vocal fry/creak register. Following videos will take you from your low fry register all the way up to high vocal fry screams.
If you'd like a lesson please visit my website www.aliki.katriou.com :)

If you're interested in exploring your false cords, check out my false cord tutorial series!
I'm a metal singer and singing teacher. I specialize in distortions - what people would call false cord, vocal fry, screaming, growling, grunting, grit, rasp, yelling. Basically, vocal texture!

Going through multiple of Akili's tutorials, I noticed that her movements & facial expression changes are frequent, expressive, and elegantly to the point, but also have this delightfully neurotic jerkiness to them. It gives me the feeling that even if Akili doesn't have this godly control of voice, she is a sight to watch live just for her stage presence alone.

Hi Aliki! I love your classes. You are the best! I can make vocal fry (low and high notes) but it is difficult to add power or volume (make a good sound) The same happens with false chords. I can make the tibetan throat singing just for a while (it comes and goes haha) or when I try to use both effects at the same time. Another thing that happens to me, is that I get tired of "retaining" air 🤔 because as you say it is 1/3 air use. I'll be waiting for your next video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 4 года назад
I hear you! Just off the top of my head, some small tips for you: 1) don't try to add power or volume to your fry (it doesn't work the way normal phonation and volume works so you'll just be wasting time; wait for my video on this topic), 2) don't retain air; get rid of the air and then vocalise - so exhale, then fry. You want to build the skill of singing on little air, not holding back air and definitely not "filling up" with air, contrary to some beliefs.

Woot, nice little breakdown of the 4 registers, sure makes things seem a lot simpler than I've known it as (would love to see some tips on getting whistle down the line too btw lol). Keen for more on fry, it's definitely a weakness for me compared to false cord. Is it weird that I can keep that basic fry but make it higher without it breaking into that screamy noise you did? Am I actually changing the pitch or just getting the illusion from my mouth shape maybe lol hmm. I can get the start of the screamy noise tho, but I do find it harder depending on what I've been doing on a given day, and often don't like my tone. Also heaps keen to hear about how to get volume on this sound, I think I'm louder than I realise but I wanna make sure I'm doing things right! I've gotten to a happy place with my false cord and a lot of the sounds I can make with that, but some things are rather tricky in it, so I'd love to get the hang of fry to expand my vocal toolkit! Will be waiting eagerly for the next installment :D *One problem with this video tho* - the sound was reeeally quiet, had to turn my speakers up to max which is always mildly terrifying lol. Noticed the sound on the last video was a bit weird too but yeah this one was super soft. Are you able to turn it up a bit for the next one? I was very nervous my computer might blast me with some notification bleeping in the middle of trying to watch you hahahaha, I like loud noises but usually in a metal context not my computer trying to give me a heart attack context lol XD
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 4 года назад
Yeah, I gave up on the sound for some videos because it plays very differently on different devices and with different headphones so myeh... that being said, it's also probably stemming from personal bias too; I'm constantly turning the volume down on everything XD It's normal to be able to keep the basic fry sound and take it much higher without changing the tone. Whether it's healthy or recommended is another matter altogether and I wouldn't be able to guess outside a lesson context; I've often spent an entire 60min lesson on this issue with some students.
@DestroyerMariko
@DestroyerMariko 4 года назад
Oh wow! O_O; Thankfully I'm not stuck with the problem then! XD Lol I still wanna get lessons one day but the Aussie exchange rate is so bad rn on top of the time difference 😭 one day! Well I hope you don't turn down the sound any lower haha ^_^; I've run out of things I can turn up to be able to hear it lol. Would have to start ripping the videos to put into software to boost it, then remove the noise floor and hope you still sound the same haha. 😬

@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou Год назад
If you're going low and nothing is happening you might not be low enough in your range. If you go low and it's getting breathy and then fading out, you'll need to move down without getting breathy at all in order to locate fry. If you go low and the sound just stops without getting breathy or tight or anything, then you might need to stay on the low notes and try sliding down in slow motion to promote further relaxation of the vocal folds :)

I was always able to get that sound, but when i try to do it on higher notes(basically on any note) i sing an octave lower. Do you have any idea how to sound raspy but without going an Octave lower?
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 года назад
It depends on why you're going an octave lower... As in, are your true vocal folds dropping the pitch lower or is the fry creating a subharmonic that's an octave lower. If it's your vocal folds, try going in and out of the distortion. So start clean, then fry, then clean and don't spend too much time in fry. If it's the fry creating the subharmonic you'll need to do the fry in an even more relaxed way. Try a looser clean to start with or even making it feel a little bit breathy.

Hey! Thanks for the tutorial! I’m able to Fry scream in the mornings when I’m just waking up and on the way to work I crush my fry screams. It was easy to find that “sweet spot” but after work or when I’m more awake, I feel like it’s really tough for me to do a good vocal fry and hit that sweet spot consistently. I’m I crazy or is there something to this? Any info or tips are appreciated! Thanks!
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 года назад
This is 100% normal. In the mornings your breathflow is less, your breathing is really lazy from sleeping and your body is under energized and not really putting in much effort. Fry loves all these things! I usually recommend people practise fry first thing in the morning and that they avoid normal vocal warm ups if they want fry... Tip: record yourself counting to 5 in your speaking voice in the morning and guess what volume you're doing that at (pick a number from 1-10). Then do the same thing after work and see how that number differs. If it's higher, try moving your volume down to where it was in the morning and then attempting your fry work :)

Hey, you make really great and useful content, thank you. I haven't began to try to do vocals yet, so I'm thinking of how not to disturb my family and neighbors and I also just don't like loud noises in inappropriate situations.
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 4 года назад
I hear you and I feel the pain of volume too >.< It's much easier to practise vocal fry quietly without annoying anyone. False cord tends to be a bit loud because you've got 2 sets of vocal folds vibrating, so there's quite a bit of noise going on... Do you sing clean?

I finally managed to feel my vocal fry not in my throat, but like if it was coming from behind, like from my chest or my ears, I dont even know. I definetly feel my lungs working hard, but it feels soo much confortable, doesnt hurt or anything. And it sounds even lower and with more power. So I think I finally got it right... Right? D:

Possibly. Sensations in singing actually give us little information because it's so dependent on the shape and size of your vocal tract in combination with your skull, so it's a bit of a personal experience thing only. This is part of the reason why I don't really talk too much about sensation. Sounds like it could be right, I would challenge you to feel no work from your lungs at all, so make it even more comfortable & lazy...

Thanks for your tutorial. Please tell, can Vocal Fry Tutorial improve any kind of voice disorders?
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 месяца назад
It depends on the disorder and how we do vocal fry. Vocal fry will be most useful for disorders that involve pressing the vocal folds together too harshly, or breath & pressure issues. We'd be looking for very light use of fry in these instances in order to experience good vocal fold closure without effort or much pressure. If we're looking at more organic disorders (cysts, polyps etc), rather then dysfunctional behaviours, fry might not be the best strategy. If done lightly, it won't do harm, but it might not be the most useful option.

@AlikiKatriou

My working hypothesis is that subharmonic stuff is using the thyroarytenoid muscle during fry. So, in your case, instead of starting in your normal chest voice play around with a) dropping from falsetto into light chest voice into light fry, b) starting with a light, slightly breathy chest voice and going into fry.

@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 4 года назад
Vocal fry is an interesting one because it can be very good for you and is used by voice therapists to help a number of vocal issues. That being said, everything depends on how it's done... Regarding people speaking with a lot of vocal fry , I think it is good to minimise the amount of vocal fry one uses in speech. Two reasons: 1) it is very difficult to know, at a low range, how much tension lies within vocal fry and it's even harder to tell at the speed of speech, so it's safer to avoid it and 2) people often have a negative emotional response to vocal fry and this can impact the individual speaking so, again, safer to avoid for social reasons.

does fry come from true vocal cords or false? or it's always a mix between them? does it depend on the pitch of fry? when I'm playing with fry I notice that lowest fry is... Well, lower, physically. whilst higher fry (say, you're coming into fry from falsetto), is a lot higher, and physically feels like somewhere in soft palate. are they both safe for frequent usage? are they fundamentally different? is there any lesson on anatomical aspects of fry and other distortion types? thanks
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 года назад
Hi! Vocal fry always happens with your true vocal folds. It has nothing to do with your false vocal folds. We are physiologically able to activate the true vocal folds in fry and activate the false vocal folds at the same time for a combo fry + false fold distortion. What you feel during singing of any kind are sympathetic vibrations and they can be different for every person as they are based on the shape & size of your vocal tract and the shape & size of your skull. As long as you aren't using air to get the sound and you aren't squeezing/pushing to create the vocal fry, whatever you're doing is safe for frequent usage. As long as fry isn't your exclusive usage and you're still speaking "normally" and are able to sing in falsetto, that's good. Your low & high fry are not really anatomically different as far as I know. At the moment, I don't have a video purely on anatomical aspects of distortions...

@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 4 месяца назад
Have you tried "reverse engineering" the issue? Rather than trying to get less air in your fry, simply inhale normally, then exhale most of your air and make your fry sound. Don't do this while driving, it might make you light headed. But we're basically exploring how much air you might need to get "rid of" before the vocal folds make closer contact easily because they aren't resisting all that air/being blown apart. All that being said, there's nothing "wrong" with breathy fry. You can unlock some really cool sounds from a breathy fry. It's just nice to be able to do either/or :)

Not totally clear on this. That creaky fry sound, I can create that on much higher pitches. It's not limited to a low register... and as I type it seems you can too. So how is it a register rather than a general voice quality ?
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 года назад
So, I use the word "register" in the scientific sense and largely what determines a vocal register is the pattern of vibration on the vocal folds. Range is irrelevant to register - there are just register tendencies & certain register will be more efficient at certain ranges but there is no limit. Does this explain it or did I just make things more confusing?
@WideCuriosity
@WideCuriosity 3 года назад
@@AlikiKatriou Thanks. I can follow that, but feel the terms in general use do not always seem to be used consistently from instructor to instructor. Until now I have associated a register with a particular range. Fry tending to be the lowest. Furthermore different instructors refer to different ranges differently, some clearly suggesting, as an example, head voice is identical with falsetto, some seeing falsetto as above head, or a sub division of head. Others add flageolet, whilst others don't. Oh for consistent agreement 🙂
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 года назад
@@WideCuriosity Yes, this is because the terms originated as descriptions for sound qualities and there was no science behind them. Then, for the first decades of voice research, the scientists didn't agree on the terms. I know it's all a mess and I would love to see consistency but I think we're still far from it :/
