This is a good video! It would be slightly more engaging if you were able to do examples of what you’re discussing? Like the male sex and female gender (and vice versa)

Will definitely do in subsequent videos! This is an introduction to a series on vocal gender.

It's funny that you start by saying that people can correctly guess gender, because I've always wondered how people know how accurate their guesses are when most people don't explicitly state their gender. In a study it makes sense, but I am skeptical WRT everyday life. If guesses are never confirmed by evidence it seems that people just make an arbitrary guess and run with it.

are you saying that it's difficult to guess someone's gender in daily life? how often have you had the experience of guessing someone's gender wrong, other than in the case of pre/early transition trans people? it's not really something I've ever experienced

@@serenefish - Sort of. People guess, but it seems that they just run with assuming their guess to be correct, rather than actually confirming it. So I think of it like how if students graded their own exams, the results would get lazy. No doubt much of why I socialized this way was from living decades where it seemed obvious that people often guessed _my_ gender incorrectly. So I didn't assume that they (or I) would correctly guess for others' either.

yeah, but I think it's safe to say your average person's accuracy at guessing gender is like... 95%+, no? if it was more common, misgendering would happen a lot, and people wouldn't freak out so much when it happened

trans people's experiences are kind of the exception that proves the rule

This is what I've been looking for! So many training videos and programs I encounter focus primarily (if not solely) on pitch, which I think I'm doing OK on (when I remember to do it). I'm thrilled to find this!!!

Silverback Gorillas are generally twice the size of female gorillas. The primary reason for this is the terrifying competition between the Silverback males to be the Alpha breeder in a group. However, human males are on average 25% larger and stronger than human females. Yet, human males are the absolute apex predator of the planet because they have hunted for 100s of thousands of years in cohesive, hierarchical groups using weapons. Male humans were able to bring down Wooly Mammoths that could easily crush a Silverback Gorilla. Part of the male human's incredible predatory skill is the ability to organize and hunt in very quiet groups. However, the male voice after puberty becomes lower and more powerful than females. Hence, when male humans yell as a group it is quite terrifying to animals and other humans. On the other hand, the female voice is more childlike and when females yell it stimulates a distress or rescue response in males.

So what I got was “there is no difference between boy and girl vocals before the age 4. But people can accurately distinguish the two just by their voices, but there is no difference. But we can study them to know how to present more inline with our specific gender identity”…? That all sounds contradictory and I don’t understand what you’re actually trying to say
@goodluckgorsky3413

I’ll explain it. At the age of 4 you haven’t gone through puberty, so there is no physical difference between a male and a female’s vocal chords. Based on how society sees them and which types of people they identify with though, their way of speaking differs slightly. Just like how someone with a British accent doesn’t have biologically distinct vocal chords than someone with an American accent, but you can still tell which one they have when they speak. This is because they learn how to speak from different people. I think the argument of the video is the same but applied to gender. Boys learn how to speak from boys because they are told to only socialize with boys (usually) and to look up to their male peers. Just like how a person with a person raised in Britain will develop more of a British accent because they’re learning how to speak from British people, even if this person is not British. Not a 100% accurate analogy but that’s what analogies are for.

@@goodluckgorsky3413 Yes this exactly! There is no gene that makes british people have british accents - its a social phenomenon.

Don't make a video about sound and then have music in the background. I completely lost interest because it was too distracting.
