This video explains the most important element of voice feminization and why it is so important. In the video there are 4 primary exercises from my vault to help you learn control over this resonance.
Every container around you, produces a tone when tapped. This is called a "natural frequency". Your throat (pharynx) has it's own natural frequency based on how large it is. We call this frequency, R1. It strongly determines the sex perception of an individuals voice.
When exposed to testosterone, the vocal tract expands, causing this natural frequency to shift lower. By learning control the shape and size of the vocal tract, we can control R1, thereby giving us the ability to reverse the primary effect hormones had on the vocal tract.
While there are other resonances and other elements responsible for voice feminization, by far the most significant and important difference is R1. Several things can control R1: oropharyngeal closure, larynx height, tongue positioning, epilaryngeal modifications, different jaw positions, and much more. The key is to not get lost in all of these little words or the individual components. Instead, we focus on what all of these things work together to achieve: R1 control.
We learn this control by mimicking positive models. By accurately mimicking what I do, you will be copying the muscle behavior responsible for changing R1. Then, you can work to increase awareness of what's responsible for that shift and work to integrate it into a speaking voice.
Here are 4 of my own favorite approaches that you can take to explore R1:
1. R1 Raising + Voiceless [ɛ] as in Edge.
2. R1 Raising + Voiceless [pə] as in Puck.
3. R1 Raising + Voiced [m]
4. R1 Raising + Voiced Vowel Gradients
If you properly mimic these exercises, your vocal tract is shrinking. These should be treated as tools to teach you the general movement and feeling associated with altering R1. Doing these over and over without understanding why, misses the point. These exercises are demonstrations of what it sounds like when we shrink the vocal tract, thus raise R1, to female or beyond female averages. Use them as tools to show yourself the behavior you are trying to learn.
Resonance is not a place, it's not a "feeling", it's not magic: It's how cavities, chambers, and rooms, cause the sound inside them to behave differently. The fundamental challenge of voice feminization, is learning how to stabilize and maintain a higher R1 during speech without any harsh effects like squeeking, scratching, tension, or awkwardness.
If every element about your voice is perfect but the R1 is very bad, you will still get perceived as male. If the R1 is very good but everything else is terrible, you will be perceived as female. The weight and importance of R1 control can not be overstated.
I hope this video helps everyone understand this concept more!!
warmly,
z

villephant - Don’t worry about it. Once you’ve figured out how to sound feminine, just pick someone whose accent you’d like to have (maybe a from RU-vid video or a podcast) and try to mimic them. In that way you can “re-learn” an Aussie accent, or learn whatever accent you want
@wardedthorn6523

Why is it the standard voice training phrase anyways
@Vitromancy
@Vitromancy 4 года назад
@villephant Despite growing up in Australia, I could never do a "traditional Aussie" accent, until I was talking to a voice coach who taught me how for fun: Just talk with your jaw shut, opening your lips not your teeth. From there you can tone back how much you're opening/closing your mouth to vary the strength of the accent. So, even if you learn a feminised american accent, you can just re-aussie it again afterwards :)

Nonbinary here (male anatomy, so deeper voice). I don't really care about sounding female in my daily life, but as a musician and amateur vocalist who especially loves singing high-pitched parts, myself, this video seems really helpful! I've done some practice to expand my vocal range (and control) and experimented with changing my throat pitch to try and match female singers, but I never really knew what the R1 was called or how it worked. I'm thinking that understanding voice feminization will help me sing more female parts...

I also find the whole anatomy, that's going on within human vocal tracts when singing, speaking, screaming really fascinating. This video was very, very interesting. In addition I can use this to give my female NPCs in my DnD campaign more of a female voice. I mean, yes, I can talk in a higher-pitched voice but it will just sound like a dude talking in a higher-pitched voice. I never thought about what makes a voice sound male or female (for example, on many Metal albums, you can clearly hear, when a woman does screaming vocals vs. when a man does screaming vocals...it just sounds different). Really, beautiful video for everyone, that does anything with their voice. Be it as a hobby or a job.

I'm no expert but here's what I took from it. The more open your throat, the deeper the voice, the more closed, the more feminine. You can augment further, but basically open your mouth and throat to go deeper, and close your mouth and throat to go higher, which sounds more feminine. There's other tricks, but that one you want to master, others your want to practice. Maybe I'm wrong, this is just what I tried and it seemed to work (you can always speak a little more toward your preferred tone regardless of gender).

This reminds me of a classic singing technique for male singers which involves the conscious lowering of the larynx. This has the reverse effect as it expands the throat and gives it a deeper pitch, more resonance and lets it sound more masculine. So, basically the same in reverse. I am not trans but I record audio books and short stories. And some people were really surprised by my voices for female characters and how authentically feminine some of them sounded. Now I know why 😂 Basically, I already used a basic form of this because I already used shifting my larynx for a lot of my characters. For example, dwarves in fantasy always had a very low larynx voice while elves were very close to my natural or even slightly feminized voice with a slightly higher and more narrow larynx. Now, I can work with this in a more conscious manner. Thanks for that.
