Doug, You are AMAAZING!!! I watched tons of videos about how to get loud and about twang/ping/mask and none of them was getting to the point and explaining perfectly how to do it. Thank you!!
Hi Doug! I've been following your lessons for a while and I wanted to thank you, I reaaaally improved my tone and technique thanks to you! Greetings from Spain! :D
I can see why this style of singing is so important, I’m a bel canto teacher and Mastering classical while studying contemporary has been a big game changer. Power 🤝 resonance
My teacher has me doing vocal nasal resonance right now and wants me to sound like SpongeBob or Janice from Friends (oh. My. Gawd!). I feel and look absolutely ridiculous when doing it but then listening to a recording, it sounds way better than in my head. It’s just hard to do consistently. she says it’s because I’m a bass and this will help heighten my range and it’s completely foreign to me but actually sounds good to others. Thank you for this video. I believe it is helping.
What a fantastic video lesson. My tone is usually all over the place, but after practicing this lesson it is much brighter, and the quality is much more even. Many thanks! Also bonus points for the Megadeth.
Very useful. In the past I've forced a placement more towards the front of my mouth for high notes and belting, which ends up feeling very tense with no control. I feel like if I work on this I can get consistent higher notes. Usually when doing singing excercises I can only go up to about E4/F4. but with this I was able to stretch that almost all the way to the top. I found that I was also more on pitch with this bright sound.
Hey Zed, great video! Additionally, you add that bright, piercing sound to the deep, chest voice of yours in order to give a nice, clear tone that still has a great balance of robustness in it. Ultimately, the piercing sound is a great tool to avoid a dull, extremely dark tone and allow us to project clearly, but it is not the finished sound - the darker chest resonance needs to be added later on in order to balance it out.
I think this is a key thing for me to add to my voice, but will come in time. It’s like a layer added, however again I need to put these things into practice! Wish me luck
It helped me to realize how to get a brighter, more nice sounding tone for sure, thanks. Usually i hate to hear myself when i played back, and i found that this might be the issue. I've done at least this "Hey Jude" and it sounded way better. Before knowing this i would be the one doing the incorrect Hey Jude...small progress, but i guess that's something hahaha By the way you have a great voice Doug. Even that High school clip, sure you knew waaay less technique than now but it still sounded like a good voice. But hearing you sing Stay now fucking blew my mind away. Well, big hugs from Brazil bro, great video.
Subscribed immediately 👍 Would like to hear some heavy metal lesson (no growling greety subgenres, just rockin' vocal technique ). That one caught my attention in a single moment. Many thanks!!!
Lack of clarity is often related to our personality. If you are shy and don't like to be noticed in public, you'll tend to swallow your words, speak in low volume, etc. Even the tongue will be more to the back than it should be if you wanted a clear tone. Free your voice! To do this, go in park when there is nobody at night and sing your head off. Or rent a studio or local where you can sing when you want and as loud as you want. I did both, and it has helped me a lot.
Hey Doug love your vids This twang thing I can do it quite well but feels and sounds wrong haha 😂 But know it’s not I know you can do it on different degrees so maybe as you said you done yourself maybe I’m doing it to much but it does feel like the right placement but weird at the min 😂 but nice one Doug keep doing what you do man 👍
Hi thanks for sharing, and congrats on your improvement. I’m a bit confused though- your voice sounded good but the larynx move up and down still. Now should we bother about that larynx (adam’s apple) moving or as long as you sound good, then it’s ok? What confused me is other popular tutorials really pushes that idea of keeping larynx neutral. But If you want to project the voice more forward- the larynx also tends to move a little bit /slightly high in the process (in my experience). I mean it is not completely stationary.
Great video!! Thank you so much😄 I have one question though. Is this the same placement that is used for mixed voice/ middle voice? Will this build mixed voice or do you sing in this placement in your chest and head voice as well to have a nice tone throughout your whole range?
I have the same Question.. anyway this exercises is kinda bs, because during the training he has his mouth open very wide.. and when he sing not so much..
So glad i found your channel. Awesome that you provide us with vocal tutorials. I got a question maybe u can help me, in one video you mentioned that u should not put much pressure on the voice. But when iam supporting my voice with my diaphram iam putting kinda pressure on it don´t i? It confuses me a little bit *sorry for bad english, from germany ;D
Thanks for watching :) Which video did I say that in? Let me know as some of my videos are really old and probably need to be unlisted now that I know more about the voice. Singing definitely requires pressure. 100%. Try to keep that pressure in the stomach//belly//pelvic floor support rather than on the throat. Try to balance out any throat tension by applying pressure into the stomach area. Thanks!
Alright thx for the answer :) Ugh, in which Video was it...i dont even know it anymore, watched almost every Vocal tutorial Video in your channel and in every video was at least 1 helpful point, guess i should make a list so i dont have to watch aaalll videos over and over :D watched this video now for the third time and i have to say the exercises make my throat feels very smooth and nice, more than the other exercises
@@Dougzed ohhhh my bad honestly, I came across the breathing vid then saw it’s part of a playlist, so I just saved the playlist and followed from there… I should’ve just checked out your whole channel, my bad
@@Dougzed sorry second message, is there perhaps a platform where I can discuss with you privately…don’t worry i will maintain a professional conversation to avoid anything that might offend you or creep you out
I don't personally focus on placing the sound forward because it tends to get stuck in the nose more often. I find sending it to the soft palate makes it bright enough already. You just have to experiment with it and see for you self. Goodluck!
@@Dougzed I have a problem with vocal tone. I've been doing it for a long time but it is not the way how I want it. How could I make my tone at the same level as my favorite artist? For example Ariana Grande. I don't want to sound like her because she has her own unique voice, but what I am saying is that how could my tone travel to her level. Please help me and tell me what should I do.
@@alisonbliss2556 If you need help and fix the problem yourself then you need to sign up to do some 1 on 1 vocal lessons. I offer them over Skype. Here is a link to my website where you can book in a session www.dougzeigenbein.com/lessons
By the way, I always recommend your videos to my band's singer, and you've been pretty useful for him too! Our name is Walking with Wolves, in case you want to check us out! Love :D
Sir pls what do you recommend for me, I notice this lack of flexibility while singing on my head voice, and also loses control of air while singing there
I generally always send the sound towards the soft palate and I reccomend you do the same. The soft palate will lift if you sing with correct technique so you don't need to actively manipulate it just focus on singing with as much freedom as possible
Its Rexa my suggestion is to remove to tension such as in the jaw, tongue, neck, larynx. This will improve your resonance/tone. Ive been there and still improving
What is their relationship? You said you need it to sing the high notes, but you need mixed voice for that too. Do you have to pick one or does pharyngeal simply modify the sound of your mix?
Can someone verify that for me? In my case, I try to get the pharyngeal involved, it seems to automatically provide the support that I need. I usually try to flex the belly muscles to get the support and THEN sing, which could be the wrong way that all vocal coaches show. Am I right or wrong?
