My cats are angry with me tonight so I am getting no attention. ( I forgot to buy wet food but they have tons of dry) This is interesting except I can't make bubble lips 😟
@@SamJohnsonVoice Hi Sam, we're currently using your video in my high school male vocal ensemble. It's very nice for them to have someone with their voice type explaining how their works. It helps connect what we're teaching. Some of my students are new and like Veralidiane said, you broke it down in such a way that they understood even though for many of them, this is their first time in a vocal class. Take care and stay safe.
I have laryngeal damage due to my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I have been to numerous voice coachs (over the last 7 years) just to be able to produce what someone might call a voice. They do not understand that I have scar tissue and that my throat tears just from speaking and I feel like I have gotten no where with the guidance I have recieved. I started doing the exercises you do, Shake my head When I feel things are getting too tight but that I can continue (the voice coachs told me to sit straight, focus on my breathing, and to not move my head). I have increased my vocal duration from 20 minutes to about an hour a day. It doesn’t sound like much, but it is to me especially since speaking is an mandatory part of communication. I want to say thank you and please remember you are helping more people than you realize.
I tried it and had to accept that I'm so bad at singing, I can't even do bubble lips halfway decently ... my dog looked at me like I finally lost the last of my marbles.
My fellow voice teacher friend and I are discovering you at the same time, and you've inspired some great conversations over the past couple days. I use a lot of these exercises with my students already, but I really love how you break them down and explain them in such an accessible way. Thanks again for being awesome!
I was classically trained during my school days, but never given much insight into the anatomy behind the techniques we used, or the ways I could vary them beyond classical rules. I’ve learned a lot on my own, but it’s been fascinating listening to your different approaches - and these warm up exercises are a great example! Very different from the way I was taught, but similar to the ways I automatically try to loosen off my voice when it feels uncomfortable. I absolutely love your methods & attitude, thank you for the free education!
I love how you explain things. I have never had a vocal teacher who could actually explain things about what was happening mechanically. I'm so sick of hearing "sing more forward". Across all your videos I think I've heard you say that only once, and you almost immediately followed it up with a much more helpful explanation of what that means. When I actually get money I want to donate to you, because you are an actual angel. >_
I love your way of explaining things so simply yet so thoroughly, keep it up and definitely do more tutorials on things like vibrato development, control, falsetto, the differences between male and female vocal ranges and tendencies, etc. And more reactions to EXO's live performances!!
There is a quote supposedly by Albert Einstein. I don't know if he actually said that but I know it's true: "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. "
You know your vocal warm-up is generally good if it sounds hilarious. 😂 The choir teacher I had briefly in high school always told me that it's partially the ridiculous sound of some of them that make them so useful. The different sounds and using different vowels obviously helps on a technical level, but it helps you to relax too. If it's wacky enough that you bust out laughing before you can get through the exercise, it's still helping, lol. Awesome video, Sam. I kind of stopped singing for a long while after my teacher moved to a different school (and we subsequently lost the choir program that had only just come back my senior after there being no program for 8 years) and now I'm having to try and relearn a lot of things, and your videos have a been a huge help. You teach very similar to the teacher I had, so that makes things even better. Great video!
I have been absolutely fighting to find a teacher that just pulls me in and makes studying fun for me. I am 29 years old and have been singing since I was a child but never took lessons on instrument or voice. Recently I have joined a band and have been finding myself having some trouble recovering after a night of singing. I will most certainly try to FaceTime with you one of these days, I have so many questions that I don’t want just answered but actually want to dive into. Here’s to you! 🍻
I feel you, I'm 24 and although I took lessons with multiple teachers I feel like it was kinda a waste of time. A lot of teachers contradict each other leaving you just confused. And I also get tired after a few songs so I'm sure there's something wrong with my technique. Check out Ken Tamplin too, he is a great voice teacher.
I want so much to get back into singing, but 2 major things have happened since I did choirs & theatre: 1) My thyroid crashed, making my voice deeper (I used to sing sapranno), and 2) I've been attacked with asthma from the bowels of hell... oh, 3rd is recent, I have "vocal chord dysfunction!" Just did some work w/ ENT & will be working w/ speech therapist. I'm so glad I've found your videos. I love how you explain things in an easy to understand way. I fully plan on using the wonderful tips & info you provide to help me find my voice again. Keep up the great work! p.s. The short hair looks really good on you. 😊
Try singing more! If you keep watching I'm sure concepts will make more sense, but you have to practice too. Just singing along with a song or two a day while meditating on that one thing is enough.
actually I don't sing as well, but I've found this warm up a fun thing to do and it really feels good now, looks like after watching all the videos I started to want to sing! So, thank you, Sam!
I was so sick for almost two years straight, starting in 2015, to where I couldn't stop coughing 24/7 and ended up not being able to sing for a long time. I am still not at 100% or back to how I used to be back when I was classically trained, but your videos have been very helpful.
OsakaRose Same here. I was always an contralto, but after being sick, I could barely make any noise at all. I lost my voice completely for two months. Which sucks when your job is the teach and lecture college students. Although the coughing fits have gone away for quite some time now, I still have difficulty doing much aside from walking slowly. However, after watching Sam's videos, I have finally figured out how to expand my vocal range and technique. I still have quite a way to go, but progress is something that I don't take lightly.
It's funny, I grew up singing... My mom had a radio show when she was 12 and toured all over, so she knew a bit about singing, but didn't really do warmups or anything. I skipped choir because I didn't get along with the teacher. So now I'm in my 40s, starting to learn about the technical side of singing. It's strange... I lost an octave through the years thanks to recurring laryngitis, but I'm getting it back slowly, which surprised the heck out of me! Thanks for helping me with this...it's fun and exciting!
Thank you so much for all this informative information. I just found your channel and really been enjoying your content. Can you make a video for people trying to find their voice? And tips to develop it further. I'm a beginner and a bit lost to where to start. I look forward for future content. :)
Amazing! So many things that you do are really close to what I do for an opera warm up, which just goes to prove what I keep telling younger singers - the basics are the basics are the basics, whether you’re going to sing opera, music theatre, pop, rock, metal. Doesn’t matter. Voices all want the same thing: freedom, clarity, and kindness. Also loved hearing the transition from morning voice to warmed up voice. You have a lovely sound Sam!
I'm calling your head shake to in focus the chords "the Stevie wonder" love You! Subscribed. A lot of vocal coaches feel hoity toity but you are so relatable and likable thanks for your videos!
You got yourself a new follower! As a singer and beginner voice teacher i`ve found your videos super informative and entertaining af too! Keep it UP kudos! I hope you keep growing so these vídeos, as you said, are worth your time ;)
These warm ups have been very helpful and informative, I've been doing them mostly when I've had to sing early in the morning, and have found it has made a huge difference!
I don't sing, I dont want to learn how to sing, idk why I'm watching these videos but I can't stop. I shoooould be watching drumming videos since those would actually help me but whatever, I'm subscribed now P.s. that's the third Utah Jazz shirt in a row in the videos I've watched
You're amazing, humble, talented, smart, and a good teacher.

I like your voice so much! And I like that you just warm up your voice and show us, that warm up lessons sometimes just don't sound perfect. They just exist to help us train our voice, so that we can sing the songs we want to sing a little bit better without scratching our voice.
I can't imagine how much more I could learn from you in an actual lesson, but when I get some extra money, I want to find out. 5 days no cigarettes, yeah me!
Thank you thank you thank you! I've been struggling with a piece of music, watching your warmup gave insight into my own tendency for neck/larynx tension.
Thank you Sam! This is exactly the kind of explanation I need to really understand more of the mechanics of my vocals etc, as I'm a thinking & visualisation person. I've searched and asked for years specifically about warming up and have never had a definitive explanation as to where to feel it, how to, and why beyond the generic "the vocals are a muscle that need to be warmed up just like any other muscle" line. I mean, I get that, but you've taken my understanding up a level whereby I can begin to feel my way through warming up, and make adjustments accordingly. Great stuff! x
I'm learning so freaking much with just one video. You're the best vocal teacher I've found on the internet (and IRL, actually). I sing since almost always and I've become pretty good in giving colors, power and precision to my singing, mostly experimenting by myself, but I've never been able to learn through and understand the power of vocal warm ups. I'm gonna apply your tecniques straight forward. Thank you so much!
Literally ... I needed this video , everything was explained so great i find myself straining trying to switch between my high and low register lol its like i get winded so fast.
Thank you so much for this. Being aware of how things are going with my voice each day, sort of callibrating myself daily, has made all the difference for me. I'm now using your breathing video and this one daily! You're the best. Greetings from Peru!
I have been doing vocal videos for about 5 years now ( am a professional singer) and this was excellent for specific clarification and some great tips for really feeling your voice. Also some new twists on warm up exercizes! I loved it.
This is actually super close (a lot of exercises) to what I've learned from Roger Love's audio book Set Your Voice Free and his warmups online. Super helpful vid Sam, keep killin it, would love some more content like this!
I just recently started to watch your videos and I learnt a lot. Now I can understand a bit more what my friend is talking about when he explaining singing to me. He creates his own music and for some reason likes me to sing for him, idk why, but eh. But you what I like is your simple descriptions of how it should sound and feel and I can relate. With this newfound information I'm improving. Thank you. Also......I swear I took for an elf for a minute. All that is missing is the pointy ears. Thanks.
Very interesting perspectives. When you use the nasal sounds you are incorporating the soft palate. Swallowing does indeed make the larynx rise. The cricoarytenoids are the muscles most important to the narrowing of the vocal folds. As an SLP I am enjoying your videos. Learning with you, to help others with voice goals. Tthough my students don't have the end goals of your students, knowledge gained can only help me to serve them better. Thank you!
I've always had a bit of an issue with getting vocal warm-ups and exercises down properly, but following along with your video really helped. Awesome content and clear, understandable explanations. Subbed and looking forward to more content!
The neck moving, when you said it isolates the vocal chords tension reminded me of Stevie Wonder moving his head when singing. I loved the explanation of this video because I’m not a singer and I felt like this shows us what vocal warm up is about. ‘Don’t know how this video ended up as a suggestion for me but I’m glad for it, thanks, Sam.
Wow. Just great! Great video. Thank you. Yes vera I've watched many of his videos. Hes great at explaining things and is an excellent vocal coach. He knows what hes doing. Many popuoar singers could learn alot fron him.
i just try these things ur doin and my sister just start laughin. hope i can do it as well but i dont really have a good voice so ill just know and enjoy watchin u do it. ur really good at it. love that
I can’t sing but I sure do enjoy your videos. Very interesting how just running some air through your vocal cords can be so complicated and have such dramatic effect once you understand it all. This video here was super interesting because I can see you’re getting feedback from your voice and adjust your warm-up accordingly. Really cool!
I just recently found your Videos and they are great! I love the way you explain things step by step. I have watched many “vocal coach reacts” videos and you are by far my favorite to watch! P.s. I love your graphic t-shirts. Especially the lord of the rings shirt with the eye and the ring. 😂
Jeez, doing these make me miss being in choir and taking voice lessons! Dx I especially loved the sound of harmonies in choir. It had this strange piercing sound when all the sounds came together perfectly! Thanks for the brief lesson :)
I found your channel last night and I am binge watching your videos lol. I don't know much about music, signing and I get a bit lost with the G5, Cs etc lol. But.. I find that the way you explain is super great evev for someone that doesn't know much about music. New subbie!! 🖤
I do lip trill exercises which is your bubble lip. I originally learned them from Dileesa Archer an AMAZING vocal coach and the only one I listen to besides you, now.
Thanks so much for this upload! I've been struggling with a student of mine and what you're describing here are some of the things he does that I wasn't able to correct properly before 🙏
This is so amazing to know. I've never ever warmed up, I didn't even know it was a thing (yeah I know it sounds stupid). I found myself being able to hit very high notes comfortably and sing really well some days, and then spend other days cracking every time I tried to hit those same notes. Then my transition from a note to another gets bad too for some reason. It feels very frustrating to not have the full control of your voice every time that you want. I know I can sing up to a certain standard but sometimes I just feel something stuck in my throat and can't get rid of it. I definitely want to get some lessons with you, I think you are a great teacher and I hope you can help me understand how to treat my voice well so that I can actually use it. I practice every day, but I'm quite tired of having incredible days opposed to awful ones. Thanks for your videos though, they're so helpful! I'd ask something but I don't know anything about techniques and all that. I just sing naturally and don't really know what happens when I am singing.
Wow, thank you sooo much! This was really helpfull! I finally understand what exactly is happening and what I am doing wrong. Most teachers just say that you use these kind of exercises "to prepare you voice to sing" and so on, but nobody never really explained what exactly is going on. Most of the times, when I was told I am doing it wrong, I never understood what exactly is the thing I am doing wrong. Now I know, thank you!🌸 PS: Please do more this kind of videos!🎤🍀
I really enjoyed this, my old choir teacher never explained or even told me about chest or head voice, or any technicalities of how or why a voice sounded wrong at a certain time. I may only be a shy in the car alone only singer, but between this and all your react videos I have definitely noticed a change in my voice. Though the second exercise that was suppose to sound like a straw slightly made the back of my throat feel funny, not really sure how to explain what it's like though lol. Please keep up the amazing work.
I've never really tried singing warm ups before, but wow I really feel a difference in my body :o I knew they obviously helped but I didn't realize how dramatic it would be I'm shocked haha
Just hearing you talking about larynx suppression is automatically tightening mine. Its like a if it had a mind of its own. Bad habits are hard to kill.
