VOCES8 and Chanticleer join forces for this new arrangement of Scarborough Fair, arranged by Chanticleer's bass-baritone, Jared Graveley. This session video was shot at the VOCES8 Centre in London.
This arrangement is pure magic, a true masterpiece! I had so many different emotions during the song and a lot of goosebumps. Thank you so much all of you for so much beauty!
Well, I just done just ended up in musical heaven. These two groups on their own never fail to impress, this combination is just astonishing. The arrangement is spectacular, the stellar voices melding from the two brilliant groups just blows my mind. Bravo to Voces8 and Chanticleer, you blew my mind, in a spectacular way. Bravo/Brava
Lovely this! The lady with the round glasses is a joy to watch. Sometimes these traditional songs get reharmonised to death; the original ‘sense’ and momentum tumbles over musical potholes, like some of those tortuous organ transcriptions. This version is gorgeous, engaging, harmonically deft whilst still referencing the original’s simplicity and sense of motion. Quite liked it in short! 😊
I wish the sound was less compressed to actually *feel* how loud the ending really is. Having been to one of their concerts, they can be LOUD! I mean they can go from a whisper to your ears popping.
Can you guys please come to Missouri? You people are amazing. It always brightens my day when I see a new voces8 video. You are the only music I listen to!
Not sure if it was intentional, but the busy-ness of the parts and the weighty-ness of the harmonies gave me the sensation of being at a market-such a mixture of sounds! The original to me has more of a lonesome feel than this arrangement. Maybe it's just my introverted personality, but I honestly felt as though I had just walked through a crowd.
Chanticleer is an American 12-male-voice professional choir. They have been around for something like 40 years, have made dozens of recordings, and perform many times every year, all over the world. They perform music from trecento all the way to newly-composed music, both classical and popular. If you like Voces8, you should get to know Chanticleer.
It's very well sung of course, but I feel like the arrangement makes no sense at all. It is so far detached from the text and the original idea, and although that doesn't have to be a negative thing I feel like the arrangement tries to do something that has nothing to do with Scarborough Fair at all. The final chords for instance: it feels like a grandiose massive ending is totally misplaced with this text. Maybe the arranger should have used a different text for these ideas.
