WHAT A FUN FIELD TEST !
WHAT A GREAT SUMMER !
WHAT A GREAT SSA DIVING RIG !
We're back at Devil's Lake, Wisconsin for yet another field test of the VOGTLAND DIY SSA Diving Rig !
UPDATES to the rig include:
- 0.3 micron tool-side filter, to keep the "scary" particle from getting into my lungs;
- a 0 to 160psi submersible (but decidedly "bulky") pressure gauge; and
- a NEW 25 ft hose with proper NPT fitting all the way around (no more barb fitting with hose clamp for me!)
- I brought my FINIS "positive thrust" 'shorty' fins with me this time, so 15 min into my first dive, my daughters told me I'd swum easily 1/4 of the way (maybe 1/3) ACROSS Devil's Lake, pulling my SSA unit behind me :-O
JUST LIKE THE PREVIOUS FIELD TESTS, this unit DELIVERED all the fun I hoped I'd get out of it...
... AND I FOUND MORE TREASURE - this time a fairly nice (nicer than MINE) MASK & SNORKEL at the bottom of the lake :-O
The water was still quite clear for a late August, but the wind and swimmers DID stir up the silt at least a little, and the water was just a tad cooler, so that 30 minute dives were all I felt like doing before I had to come up for some sun & sandwiches...
ENJOY the field test - it MAY be my LAST dive of the season :-|

I believe pumps that fill scuba tanks diaphragms are a food grade, high temperature, low out gas silicone compound. Hope this helped.

You need to check to see if the pump diaphragm is out gassing any vapors that are harmful a filter wont stop gas. Typically pumps do out gas because they get hot. Call the factory and ask is the air safe For diving I bet it is not because dive pump have special diaphragms and other low out gassing parts.

I find your setup very interesting - I am 10 miles from the beach in So Florida and have been diving off & on for over 50 years - I am looking to pick up a Blu3 Nemo for metal detecting off the beach at high tide so the 9-foot depth limit is great for me, and I can grab the Scuba if I ever need to go deeper - I have been looking at the home made setups to save money since the Nemo with 3 battery's and tax is around $2,000 - Due to the flushing everything with fresh water as soon as I get home it pretty much kills all other options - I think the Nemo is the safest one that is also fully waterproof - if I was doing fresh water only I would differently build one like yours and try it out -

Hi again Art ! MOST INTERESTING - your particular application ! If I were trying to build a solution for YOUR application: - working depths of around 10-12 feet max; - HAVE a BOAT available - STILL on a BUDGET - WANT the SAFETY of an additional TANK attached to the compressor then I would STILL try something like MY unit INSTEAD of the "NEMO" series. AND I would use a LONGER hose and LEAVE the compressor ON THE BOAT. AND I would carry a "spare air" bottle, and be 110% CERTAIN that my weight belt COULD be DITCHED in a moment's notice, but with a MARKER BUOY for later RECOVERY. Me? I'm WADING INTO a sandy-bottom lake that is 27 ft deep MAX, but only INTERESTING down to 18 ft, and I'll TYPICALLY spend ALL of my battery LOOKING FOR EXPENSIVE SUNGLASSES & STUFF that people DROP off their standup paddleboards (my BEST "treasure" was a $260 pair of RAYBAN Vintage Sun Glasses that my youngest daughter got, but I've ALSO found a FANTASTIC diving MASK and SNORKEL that I now USE ;-) ) BIG QUESTION: Do the NEMO-type hookah rigs now HAVE air tanks attached? I'm asking because when I FIRST went looking to BUY a system, the NEMO units were around $1100, and they DIDN'T have ANY TANK at all :-O But to its credit the Nemo unit IS utterly WATERPROOF. KEEP US UPDATED on YOUR next adventure/project ! Cheers, -Mark

Greetings Mana ! HMMM... I "did diligence" and looked up the rig you described... ... but the SOLO rig STARTS at $1400 :-O Also - like the NEMO rig - I find myself LEARY of any hookah system with NO TANK :-O... IMAGINE being down 10m (30 ft is what documentation says), you just exhaled fully and you're expecting to take a deeeeep next inhale and continue your dive, when ... NOTHING. You're 30 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE, with EMPTY LUNGS. Even on your BEST breath, you would only make it about 15 ft, so you're 2 FULL BREATHS from the surface, with EMPTY LUNGS :-| DO you think that YOU'D make it to the surface? WOULD you even have the presence-of-mind to DITCH the weight belt, or would you be SCRAMBLING in a blind panic for the surface - only to NOT make it? These are the thoughts that went through MY mind even when I was doing my check dives for my NAUI Advanced SCUBA rating; you're down at 80ft (required), and you're told to take OFF all of your gear, set it on the bottom, TAKE OFF your mask, LOOK AT THE SURFACE waaaaaaaay up there at 80 ft, and then you know - you REALLY KNOW - just how FAR that distance is... ... and 30 ft is ALSO "a long-fucking way up". So when I was designing my own DIY unit (remember it costs UNDER $300, and ALL of the components except the mouthpiece can be used for OTHER stuff - powering other tools, acting as an actual AIR COMPRESSOR, floating in the tube, etc), I was CONVINCED I would rather HAVE a tank than NOT have a tank, and even then you really only 10 breaths after the batteries are dead, and you STILL only feel a "pull" in the last 2 to 3 breaths. IMAGINE what happens when a TANKLESS unit finally stops :-O But everyone must make their decision. KEEP FINDING THOSE SSA UNITS - there ARE more & more to choose from every season, so it MUST be getting MORE & MORE popular ! Cheers, -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

Also - I would get a horse collar like they wear on fishing boats with both manual tube and cord power inflater incase that float gets a hole in it - I wear one when I hunt in the water in case I get hit by a riptide - been wearing a wrist inflatable devise since the first riptide caught me with a tank on my back and 56lb of lead to keep me on the bottom - I added the collar later as a backup - I had no fins with me and almost had to abandon almost $1,000 + worth of equipment if I guest W or E wrong since I could not reach the surface - I had negative buoyancy back then -

Greetings Art and welcome to VOGTLAND OUTDOORS ! WOW - interesting stories & adventures - ALL GREAT READING ! KEEP in mind MY original purpose here - to fill a "gap" BETWEEN snorkeling and SCUBA - NOTHING MORE ! This entire rig was meant to be a BUDGET-MINDED-but-still-SAFE ALTERNATIVE to some of the $900 "hookah" rigs out there - ones that DON'T even HAVE an attached air tank :-O What' I've achieve for under $300 MEETS my requirements, but it's STILL meant to be a "NON-PROFESSIONAL", day-at-the-beach-don't-EVER-go-deeper-than-20-feet type of unit. Period. YOUR rig sounds FAR more "pro" version - WHAT are YOU doing with it?? If YOU have a RU-vid Channel let me know, and I'd be happy to PROMOTE it ! Cheers, -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

Hi, thanks a lot for sharing this info. Many people will be able to spend 300-400 dollars and have so much fun! I am wondering if you lower your main pressure from 130 PSI to let's say 80-90 PSI your batteries will last longer, compressor will run cooler and will have less wear. If your "tool" pressure is set to 40-50 PSI there is not much point to have 130PSI in the receiver. What do you think?
@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS
@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS 7 месяцев назад
Hi "Just"! HMMM... I too experimented with the "Pressure Differential" betwixt my "Source" and my "tool"... What I noticed was this: a 2-atage breathing regulator ISN'T an "typical" tool; it seemed PREFER a certain differential, and I rwcall that when this differential was TOO LOW (like rhe 55 PSI you mentioned) then drawing a breath via the regulator became LABORIOUS, because the regulator valve DIDN'T open EASILY - instead it required that I almost "suck a breath out" like drinking from a straw. When the differential was in the 120PSI range, then drawing a new breath became as natural was "inhaling"... HAS ANYONE ELASE HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE??
@TrueHelpTV
@TrueHelpTV 5 месяцев назад
@@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS your regulator is likely set to about 125-145psi, so that's why it needs more pressure to operate. Since you're only going to experience about 30 PSI at 33 ft and you really don't want to go beyond that depth, then if you wanted to operate at lower pressures, a scuba shop can swap parts in them to reduce their nominal operating pressure, or you can get one from someone like Brownies which operates around 55/65 PSI so it's still solid for far deeper than you have any business going with this setup and knowledge =D Cheers.. if you ever decide to build a bigger one, the industrial hookah units are just using a 1100w oilless aerator pump meant for long cycle operations in ponds.. lol the more you know.

Greetings Vadims and welcome to VOGTLAND OUTDOORS ! THINKING... PONDERING... THINKING & PONDERING... PONDERING & THINKING... FINALLY - my RESPONSE: KEEP IN MIND the PURPOSE of this DIY Surface-Supplied Air Unit: 1. SAFE 2. AFFORDABLE 3. PRACTICAL & HANDY I'm wondering if perhaps you're OVER-THINKING this little unit? It's meant ONLY to fill that SMALL "gap" of diving somewhere between SNORKELING (surface to 6 ft) and SCUBA (20 ft to 100 ft) IF you start mounting an EXTERNAL TANK "on shore" (your words) - NOW you're introducing as much as 200m of additional hose - because that's how far OFFSHORE I typically dive at Devil's Lake :-O ! Nope - not for me. But that's merely MY opinion. There's ANOTHER guy down in FLORIDA who I think MAY end up using a BACK-UP unit that's NOT "on-shore" but instead is "ON-BOAT"? Go look for his comments and you two guy connect ! Cheers, -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS
@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS Год назад
Greetings Jeff ! SHORT ANSWER: No - not yet, and likely never LONGER ANSWER: An important design goal with this DIY project was that I could take equipment I TYPICALLY have around the house, and quickly and safely and reliably assemble them in to an inexpensive DIY SSA (Surface-Supplied Air) unit for the occasional fun diving at some of the lakes in the northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin area. "Typical" for me are the 5000 mAH (milli-Amp-Hr, which is literally a measure of "how-many-electrons-are-stuffed-into-a-battery"** - see my explanation further down) batteries that I use for ALL of my Bauer household tools: drills, saws, chain saws (they make a WONDERFUL product here) and yes air compressors. A FINAL THOUGHT ABOUT SAFETY: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS dive WITH A DIVE BUDDY, and be sure and have a "Beach Daddy" or "Beach Mama" watching out for you. This said, IMAGINE going down for a whopping 45 minutes and SOMETHING (bad) HAPPENED :-O LUCKILY, a depth of 15-20 ft in any of MY local lakes would give you HYPOTHERMIA after 30+ minutes ;-) So... I'll stick with the 20-25 min capacity of my 5000 mAH batteries for now ;-) NOW YOU HAVE ME CURIOUS: WHERE are YOU located, than you're even CONTEMPLATING a 45 minute dive at 15-20 feet??? It CAN'T be a lake in the northern half of the USA ! WHERE are you? Cheers, -Mark ** milli-Amp-Hrs can be "re-arranged" like this: a milli-Amp is 1/1000th of an AMP, so there's no units-conversion here; an AMP is 6.24 x 10^10 electrons moving through a point in a conductor per SECOND, or 1 Amp == 62,400,000,000 electrons/second

Hi Chuck ! ANSWER: I cut a piece of 2" thick pink construction insulation foam board (typically sells in 4' x 8' sheets for $22) until it was slightly OVER-SIZED for the bottom of the inner tube, which has a mesh bottom anyways. the foam board gets wedged into the bottom, but still has some edges which allow water to run off. Result: a rigid but additional FLOTATION platform upon which the 20 lb compressor sits nicely :-) Hope this helps ! -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS 2 года назад
Greetings Lestat! ANSWER: YES - ABSOLUTELY ! I have it installed immediately on the outlet side of the tank, ABOVE the water surface. I've gone through 2 styles so far: Style 1: sealed; THOUGHT it was a good idea, but the moment it got water in it, I COULDN'T get it out and it was more or less RUINED; Style 2: open-able; this is a BETTER idea, because now I can open it, dry it out, FLUSH it, replace filters - anything I need. I have a belly, hahaha. Now did your regulator air gauge hold up under water or did it fog up? I snorkel for clams right now in Narragansett Bay and wanted to thank you for opening up my eyes to more options. Working the tides is a 4 to 5 hour thing, but if I could put another 2 to 3 hours in the water would put me in a better tax bracket.
@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS
@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS 2 года назад
Greetings JT! A regulator "fogging up" ? Nope. What everyone is terming a "regulator" here is really the MOUTHPIECE; it doesn't "fog up", but it CAN potentially get WATER in it. I spent $79 on a "pretty decent" regulator (hose + mouthpiece with 2nd stage regulator built-in), so no problems :-) ... Clams in Narragansett Bay? Cool ! I've watched some documentaries on "hand-picked" SCALLOPS out in New England, and they were going for $40 a POUND if they got harvested and made it into the store SAME-DAY, with NO ICE, NO REFRIGERATION, so I can UNDERSTAND how you're interested in a HOOKAH system ! WHAT I'VE LEARNED ABOUT HOOKAH (SSA) SYSTEMS SO FAR: 1. Battery-powered SSA is COOL & HANDY & USEFUL - but down to about 27 feet; 2. Battery-powered SSA when your LIFE IS IN THE BALANCE should include at least ONE "BUDDY" AT THE SURFACE, watching the equipment and ready to TUG ON THE LINE to call (or HAUL) you back up! 3. Battery-powered SSA is SAFEST when it includes (at least) a 6 GALLON TANK; 4. Battery-powered SSA is SAFEST when there is a RELIABLE GAUGE in the feed line, easily visible to The Diver What have YOU learned so far?? -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS 2 года назад
Greetings and welcome Kirk to VOGTLAND OUTDOORS ! ANSWER: Through trial & error at a "practice" depth of 8 ft I learned the following about MY mouthpiece & 2nd-stage regulator: - at tank pressures BELOW 100psi the regulator was a STRUGGLE to breath (inhale) against ! - at tank pressures ABOVE 140psi the tank WASN'T RATED; - at tank pressures of 135psi I found my regulator work VERY COMFORTABLY !! - my compressor was set to turn ON below 100psie and turn OFF above 135psi - this setting regularly saw me take about 10 to 15 breaths before the tank pressure was depleted from 130psi down to 100psi, triggering the compressor back ON again for about 1 min to reach back to 135psi - at even a depth of 10ft I COULDN'T EVEN HEAR THE COMPRESSOR (AT THE SURFACE) RUNNING - IT WAS THAT QUIET ! @VOGTLANDOUTDOORS
@VOGTLANDOUTDOORS 11 месяцев назад
Greetings Mr Levia ! End of Season 2, and the "Prototype 1.1" continues to work well, though "1.1" means "VERSION 1, REVISION 1", so you know there have been some modifications along the way. What's been cool is the POSITIVE FEEDBACK and SUGGESTIONS so many viewers & subscribers have been offering - particularly regarding AIR FILTRATION and other steps to remove what could be genuine contaminants that you don't want to breathe in aerosol form into your lungs. No surprise there. No adverse health effects so far either. MORE CHANGES FOR NEXT SEASON: - CONTINUED effort to remove any impurities which might still be present in an "industrial-use" air compressor tank toward making it safer for use as a hookah unit (note: I have to wonder-out-loud if this is the very reason some of the popular professional SSA rigs DON'T have a tank - this is tricky business!); - improved connection of the diver end of the hose to the 2nd stage (breathing mouthpiece); - IMPROVED high-end filter (it makes sense to SPEND MONEY HERE to eliminate impurities before they reach your lungs); and - improved methods for attaching the hose to diver's body. Glad you inquired! -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

That patent got submitted in late 2020, and I'm still responding to various "rejections" from my assigned Examiner (this is typical). I'm not at all ready or willing to try & patent this, for no other reason than it would easily be CLONED by some company in asia (where any patents I file have ZERO protection) :-| ... Greetings Ryan ! GOOD QUESTION - there are TWO IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS to CONSIDER: 1. HOW many BREATHING DIVERS can this little rig support (literally in Liters of Air/Minute of "volume"); and 2. HOW LONG (in something like "breaths") can a 1.6 gallon air tank at 135psi provide across MULTIPLE divers? THE PRACTICAL ANSWER TURNS OUT TO BE 2 "average sized, reasonably athletic" ADULTS HOW DO I KNOW THIS? EASY - my IDENTICAL TWIN BROTHER Michael (not kidding - I DO have an IDENTICAL TWIN BROTHER - Dr Michael C Vogt, PhD in CSci AI from IIT) built HIS rig IDENTICAL to mine, but with 2 lines for him & his medium-sized reasonably athletic wife Portia to try. The rig worked PERFECTLY from a "volume-delivery" standpoint; BOTH of them could "pull" all the air they needed and NOT feel like they were "gasping" or "fighting" for each breath :-) BUT - and this should come as NO surprise - where MARK (diving solo) was getting 40 minute dives from his 2 x 5000 mAhr batteries, necessarily MICHAEL & PORTIA DIVING TOGETHER were getting 20-25 minute dives, which makes PERFECT SENSE, now doesn't it :-) . Hi Rayan ! SUGGESTION: Perhaps you could be RESEARCHING other "hookah" rigs which are being used in saltwater environments, to see what else THEY might be doing with/to THEIR hookah rigs in order to manage in saltwater environments. From my OWN experience SCUBA diving in the Caribbean (Cancun, Jamaica, St Thomas, Punta Cana, other locations on cruises), I noticed that all the diving shops CONTINUALLY immersed ALL of THEIR equipment in FRESH WATER before and after EVERY SINGLE DIVE - it was the only way rubber and other "gasket" type components can survive for long periods of use in saltwater. APPLYING that to YOUR hookah rig... You might NOT be able to protect your rig WHILE you're using it in saltwater, but IF you make sure you RINSE RINSE RINSE all components immediately AFTER you dive, that OUGHT to be helpful. Thoughts? -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

max depth ?

Hi Devo ! WATCH ALL MY VIDEOS - I cover all this ! I recommend a MAX depth of 20 ft to 25 ft. You go any deeper than that and you're in the range for TRUE SCUBA, NOT a "hookah rig" like this. -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

How did you connect the regulaor hose to the air compressor hose?

Greetings DoAnythingGuy and welcome to VOGTLAND OUTDOORS: SHORT ANSWER: A simple brass barbed fitting did the trick initially, but I'm working on a BETTER quick-release connection, as during one test-dive at around 12 ft this fitting POPPED OFF - you can see it happening in one of my videos :-O REMINDER/DISCLAIMER! This is an UNGUARANTEED, STILL-IN-FIELD-TEST-DIY UNIT, with ZERO promises, or guarantees of any kind. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you've got SUGGESTIONS for a better fitting, I still have 3 more weekends (plus Labor Day in early September) to try to make it up to DEVIL'S LAKE, WISCONSIN for one last field test. Let me know! Cheers, -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

Hey! I just made mine and I used a female hookah to 1/4" npc connector from Amazon. It made the regulator fit onto a female 1/4 compressor adaptor which then lead to the male end of the hose.
