Hello Julia. You should react to The Warning, a band of three sisters from Mexico. Enter their rock world. Here an example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E62SVvLw9FI.html
Julia, have you ever seen TJ sing 'Baby please make a change' with Hugh Laurie at the piano? If you haven't, please do. No need for a reaction, you just *have* to see it ....... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fMSxFcmiNGc.html
AS A JUDGE on "The Voice UK" in 2019, he was the only chair-turn for a kid named Peter Donegan who's DAD wrote that song for Tom and toured with him in the early years. They ended up singing that song together LIVE and impromptu during the audition... PRICELESS reunion with the son, and one of those "Full Circle" moments. it's on YT
My dad used to work on a milk round (delivering milk in the early hours to homes) as a pre-teen with Tom, in the village of Tonteg, near Pontypridd, South Wales. They both sang at local miner's and workingmens clubs in their teens, as did many people back then (50's and 60's). Tom went on to international fame, my dad not so much.
Tom used to live in Shepperton when i was a kid and my mate used to do a paper round and delivered the Sun and 20 No 6 (cigarettes) to his house each morning. Everyone who met Tom said he was a really good guy, he moved up to St.Georges Hill in Weybridge then Las Vegas the rest is history. Top bloke and great singer and wonderful showman.
I'm reading all these comments regarding Sir Tom being a judge on the "Voice UK"...for you younger folks who don't remember, Sir Tom's nickname was "The Voice", decades before any such TV shows existed. Ah, for the days of pure talent. Excellent analysis as always, Julia. I think I saw you swoon a bit (lol!)...enjoyed!
@@rickkimbley8991 Elvis had the hype of the US industry and the movies , even though most of what was been dished up was absolute crap . Elvis was great i loved him but lets be real here his voice had gone long before he died aged 41 , Tom on the other hand has carried on singing and hitting the notes faultlessly all these years and hes 81 and still going . I think that says HE IS THE GOAT not Elvis also even Elvis said Tom had a better voice and i have to agree .
I heard another RU-vid reactor describe Tom Jones as a "Baritone Cannon". Couldn't have come up with a better description of him no matter how hard I tried. Add in the fact that this was before decent mikes and auto-tune, and you simply have to respect the talent in this man. I love how you never hear him take a breath until he wants you to, because he uses it to add emotion to the performance.
And the only compressor and dynamic "technology" is how or you want the microphone distances when singing. At the time of the devastation, the artist had to master it. T Jones old video recordings it hops easily.
He wasn't a baritone. He could hit the Tenor High C when he was younger, before dropping one semi-tone early in his career to B4. He spent most of his career as a High-baritone, and was consistently able to sing around F4-A4 which is quite high for a man( I'm a baritone, my high notes that I can sing all day are between D4-F4, I max out at A4. I really struggle to even hit his notes without feeling tension after 2 or 3 of his songs). I believe by listening to his later songs that he is almost certainly now a Baritone, I'd be very surprised if he could hit the Bb4 or A4. He has remarked that his voice on the lower end has become richer/ lower probably being able to touch E2. Even as I listen to this song he never struck me as a garden variety baritone at that point in his career, he had a lighter tone to his voice, but you are correct the dude was a cannon, and to my understanding un-trained. The dude was gifted, period
Sir Tom Jones, for me the greatest ever male vocalist, his power, range, tone and emotion were second to none. Even now in his 80’s he’s still amazing!
I remember hearing Tom Jones in the 60's (yes, I'm that old) and always try to emulate his techniques while singing. The purity of his sound was always a draw for me.
Tom Jones is from Wales. He was quite the heart throb in his heyday. Young (and not so young) women in the audience would literally lose their minds, start throwing their panties on the stage, their hotel room keys.... it was a sight to behold. He still has that power 50 years later as you can testify. Getting weak in the knees? Great song, Great looks, Great sound, Great performer. Sex appeal. Enough to make you swoon. He watches RU-vid and has thanked others for their reaction. Maybe he might see yours as well. I enjoyed your reaction more than most.
He is not known as "Jones the Voice" for nothing , a friend went to see him at Telford 2 weeks ago and said the voice was still as powerfull and emotive .
Tom has just released a new album 'Surrounded By Time' at 81 yrs old and is touring behind it! (Well, actually he has moved his 2020 concert dates to 2021)
Completely awesome. My Dad lived near him in Wales and there's definitely something magical about the Welsh! Every artist out there today wants to sit down and watch this masterclass in powerful emotive singing, charismatic performance and true stagecraft.
Wales is the land of Myrddin/Merlin the magician, of dragons (as on the flag),, the Mabinogi and Arthurian tales, even Rupert Bear and the flopsy bunnies lived in Wales, and Harry Potter- i seem to remember- flew over Abergavenny (Rowling was brought up by the Welsh border), Alice of Alice in Wonderland would holiday in Wales, Tolkien loved the ancient language, picked Welsh names for Lord of the Rings, CS Lewis, who wote the Narnia tales, was of Welsh parentage, comedian Tommy Cooper, born in Caerphilly, performed magic- to comic effect, Roald Dahl was born in Wales ...the blue stones at Stonehenge with magical healing properties were amazingly transported- or moved themselves- a long distance from the Preseli hills in Wales...the Llangernyw yew tree, which has an ancient spirit, is thousands of years old. I do feel magic in Wales.
I have to agree with you, there is something magical about the Welsh and music. My father and his family were from Wales, and I grew up listening to Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Engelbert Humperdinck, as well as other Welsh and British artists. I have seen performances by Sir Tom and Dame Shirley in their 80's, and the power and beauty of their voices still gave me goosebumps.
Best reaction to this song that I've heard by far. She stayed with his vocal ability and the performance itself. The song and the reaction were a pleasure to listen to.
He wasn't a crooner. Most crooners stay within a certain octave and sing with a constant degree of softness e.g Dean Martin. Tom Jones smashed his way through 3 octaves nightly and whilst he may have had a softer side to his voice, he was renown for his power and range
Tom is my favorite male vocalist for sure. I hope you can react to my favorite female vocalist sometime, Karen Carpenter. Her song "Superstar" is a great start. What an incredible voice she had!
Julia, all your comments no doubt totally on the mark but Tom wouldn't have considered any of that as he sung. He just did it. It just came naturally to him. The power, the delivery, he had it all. This could well be the best recorded 'pop' performance by a male singer .... ever. A great orchestration behind it too.
Julia, while there is no discounting of your knowledge and understanding of the vocal mechanism. One of the additional reasons I love your video reactions is seeing your emotional reaction(s) to those certain selections that resonate with you and oh yes! It's obvious and delightful. Thank you once again.
I love that you can give this thoughtful, detailed analysis of Sir Tom's vocal technique, while at the same time swooning to it like millions of other women over the past half-century.
@@robbiec582 After your notification popped up, I decided to listen to this again- it took me ages, with much pausing to listen to her points, then replay what she'd talked about, once again it was about as far from a waste of time as can be. I'm even better informed about what I need to work on, and how to do so. What she's doing is a little bit like squeezing a quart into a pint pot, but it's well worth the effort to drain the pot- recommend to yourself and others wishing to improve their singing to persevere. The above is NOT a put-down criticism of Julia Nilon's instructional style, it's more of an appreciation of it :-)
Once I fell in love with Tom and his voice I was lost forever that was in 1965 and I still love him so much I'm so proud he's a fellow Welsh man and gone from strength to strength
Hi Julia! This video earned an instant Like, even before listening. :-) You absolutely should give his Bond-song "Thunderball" a listen. It's something extra extra-Tom-Jones! ;-) Edit: more thoughts... wasn't/isn't the man known for frying microphones due to his "loudness"? I seem to remember this tidbit. He's a real power house. Well, I'm not totally sure he's still active in Las Vegas, but he was not *that* long ago. Greetings from a regular listener in Sweden, and also member of the TCV mafia/community (as are you, I think. TCV = The Charismatic Voice)
So glad I got to see you react to a Tom Jones song 😍 I have an old soul and absolutely love a jazz/crooner type vocalist. Very well sung and loved hearing your take on it!
Thank you for a wonderful reaction Julia. Please feel free to react to more of Sir Tom Jones songs. My late mother really loved hearing him sing. I remember his TV show was always good back in the day. (When I was a kid.)
I’ve come to enjoy and appreciate Tom Jones singing more now than I ever did many years ago. And I love your interpretation of his performance as I do all of your analyses!
Who was the drummer? Those fills were Ringo worth. Amazing work on the chorus, and the camera. And that Bass, God! Such high professional sound engineers and balance.
Hi. Tom is most likely a tenor, all be it a heavy one. His technique is grounded in the old style/ operatic based production. This is very evident at the end where he covers both the E and A, and then sings the Ab open (something a baritone wouldn't do, not maintaining that quality of sound). He does this because the voice is already covered for the Ee vowel and it makes sense to keep it covered for the Oh vowel. However, the Ah vowel he uses on the Ab is much wider and he manages to sing it open. This is harder on the voice. If you want that Tom Jones sound, you'll have to learn to cover the chest voice in the high register. You'll also need a one in a million instrument!
Julia, two years after your excellent publication, I find some wonderful technical concepts, explained with precision, which in this case make me understand the prodigious voice of Tom Jones much better. Thank you very much for your versatility, knowledge and generosity in sharing them, sincere congratulations. Thanks a hug.
Tom Jones our Brit legend! I think there's something in the Welsh water. Killing Voice just released a Lee Hi video. Highly recommended. Gives me chills and goosebumps when she sings :)
That's what i waiting for. So, i want recomended a song that all vocal coach should react to it: "Black" by Pearl Jam live in MTV Unplugged, the vocalist is Eddie Vedder, and this perfomance is incredible, and heartbreaking.❤
I'm really surprised you haven't reacted to Hyolyn yet. She's known as Beyonce Korea and she was a former member of Sistar.. Nobody knows K-Pop and doesn't know her. If you read my comment I want you to react to : Hyolyn - Hyeea ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-grNSeo6jRFA.html Hyolyn - 9lives ( Live performance in good girl ) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gwuxQLueaDM.html Hyolyn and Ailee and Jessi - Bang Bang ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U3j5n-wH0Ys.html
Other intersting male vocallists you might be interested in reviewing are Eric Burdon (House Of The Rising Sun),.Joe Cocker (With A Little Help From My Friends) and Paul Robeson (Old Man River)
I’m going to preface my comment by acknowledging that I’m not really into dudes. But oh my, I do get why so many women threw their undies at him (which is actually kinda gross, I hope they were clean!) He’s SO charismatic! His voice, but just his being. He’s not even that traditionally attractive, tbh (though my meter for that may be a bit off), but there’s just something about him.
Wow, I forgot how good this guy sang! One of my parents had this guy's music. Even though that type of music genre was on the outs in my youth, it was impossible not to be impressed ...by that old person's type music (as I thought of it back then 😄).
Love your reaction, I like Tom Jones and that song is beautiful, please react to spanish singers like José José singing EL TRISTE 1970, Luis Miguel singing PALABRA DE HONOR in Viña del Mar 1985, Juan Gabriel singing HASTA QUE TE CONOCI 1990. Thank you
Tom Jones is a beast.he's otherworldly. You young lady are quite smoking hot beautifuli. I'm just speaking facts Tom is amazing what a voice . Not many have ever stepped foot on this earth.
Tom Jones had his own tv show in America from 1969 till 1971 I believe. All the famous singers went on the show to perform. His guests Janis Joplin amazing the greatest USA singer for me and also Stevie wonder etc. From the sixties onwards. please have a look
Without question my favorite singer of all-time. Born in 1962, I would fight with my parents to watch his television show when I was 7 and 8 years old. He has been a permanent fixture in my musical life. Simply unequaled. No peers!! None!!
Oh boy.....Tom Jones is my favorite males vocalist of all times......and I don't have many male favorites. BTW- I love watching Julia melt......she's melting
One other thing you reactors do not mention or do not know is that he is a Welshman and there is a tradition of singing all through the Welsh valleys , maybe not so much no days but certainly in the 60's.
TOM JONES DOESN'T NEED ANY VOCAL COACH TO VALIDATE HIS TALENT, WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HIS VOICE?? ONLY TECHNICAL TERMS. THE POINT IS THAT WE, AMATEURS AND NO VOCAL COACH LOVE HIS VOICE.
I have to admit, most of that was over my head. Two things are obvious, even to me: 1. You enjoyed the song. 2. You had no shortage of words in explaining why. (Many women enjoyed the song but were at a complete loss in attempting to explain why they did). Tom Jones is easy on the eyes and enjoyable to listen to. (As are you). Great Job, Julia!
Tom Jones is the great singer even to this day now I recommend if you want to hear a man with a high voice but really well-managed try the Bee Gees Too Much Heaven they're spectacular
Wow, thank you so much for the video and the step-by-step analysis of his performance. As a singer, I've been puzzling over this one for a while. I'll probably watch this a couple dozen times as I work on getting this one down (if ever haha). You've really helped me understand what he's doing, and pointed me in the direction of techniques to work on. I didn't appreciate Sir Tom when I was a child, but now I'd have to say he's in my top two of all time... a singer with all the pieces in the tool box. The fact that he can still hit all the same notes now just goes to show how good his technique is/was.
Just fantastic, whoever wrote this song, could have travelled the whole world for someone to sing it, He definitely make the right choice I don't think it would be possible to sing it better. The music was better back then, More raw talent about. Myming was a thing of the future, Gig's where all sung live. ♥️
Man, that brings back memories of listening to the record player with my mom. She loved his music. Thanks. You REALLY should check out Loïc Nottet -- "Mr/Mme" FIRST live (Grand Place de Bruxelles). I think you'll like it a lot.
...and this is where my life long love of music and magnificent voices began, Tom Jones began it all for me. I was 10 here ('67), watching Tom then The Tom Jones Show ( '69 - '71) and I was on heaven. Now it's still Tom and many other fantastic voices right up to now with Dimash Kudaibergen. Please react and analyse more Dimash, especially his latest three live performances from the past month (on his channel) Stranger, Fly Away and the heavenly, Ave Maria, Igor Krutoy's new composition. I just love your expressions through this video and I get it, 100%. I aways enjoy your reactions and professional analyses 🌷💟🌷Sydney 🇦🇺
I can remember reading an interview with sir Tom, after he became a sensation in the States, in which he said that he was told- I don’t recall if it was doctors or singing ‘experts’ - that if he continued singing the way he was that he would ruin his voice in a short amount of time. 🤣🤣😝 😎✌🏻🤟🏻🖖🏻🤙🏻
I'm impressed you managed to stay upright in the seat, many women literally fall for Tom and that amazing voice. Great breakdown Julia, I guess the pausing helped keep you focused. 🙃😁 He is a truly amazing singer. You should cover Delilah, live on the Ed Sullivan Show. You've already covered some girls singing this (Mamamoo?) so why not do the song they were inspired to cover.
You’re very good in explaining the art of singing. Dynamics , slide, bending of notes. I play keyboard … soothe jazz Use same approach to my music Love playing by myself because i love to flow in and out of tempo and so on Love your explaining .
twilight of the gods. your face while watching him says a lot more than your astute technical comments. the guy comes on stage exuding masculine power and confidence and from the first tones out of his mouth you know everything in the voice and performance is going to match up to that. he draws power from the floor and allows it to flow uninterrupted and upward through an athletic physicality, attacking notes forte and dead-on perfect and moving through all kinds of color and dynamics creating an intimate sense of story and making every girl who watches him think about having his babies. an incredible vocal artist and performer with a broadly informed sense of musicality. there will never be anyone like him ever again
