Archaean horizon The first sunrise On a pristine gaea Opus perfectum Somewhere there, us sleeping After sleeping through a hundred million centuries We have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with color, bountiful with life Within decades we must close our eyes again Isn't it a noble and enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun To work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? All of NW's lyrics are complex as you well know! :) But this song especially is deeper than any others. Cornelius supplied the actual lyrics below, and a while back I put together a little glossary that explains some of the technical terms he uses that may not be commonly known in general knowledge. Hope this can help support Cornelius's lyrics... Archean horizons - A term from geology referring to the rocks of the Archeozoic Period of the PreCambrian Era. The spoken-word portions are narrations by Professor Richard Dawkins, evolutionary biologist from Oxford University. He held the Oxford Chair for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 to 2008. The excerpts are from his book. At the Wembley performance, he appeared on stage with Nightwish to speak the narrations. Pristine Gaia - Gaia was the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth, now often used to refer to the primordial ecosystem when all the continents were joined. Opus perfectum - Obviously Latin for "a perfect composition" or creation. Goldilocks Zone - A semi-formal term used by astrophysicists to describe the stable orbital zones around any star which are "not too hot, not too cold, but juuuust right" for the existence of liquid water, based on their diameter, heat and luminosity output, and radiation field. Obviously this refers to the region where a planet's environment is suitable for the development of life. LUCA - LUCA is an acronym for a formal term used by evolutionary biologists that stands for "Last Universal Common Ancestor." It is the most recent population group of organisms which shared common ancestry with every currently surviving species on Earth. Devonian - A geology term pertaining to the portion of the Paleozoic Era dominated by ocean fish, prior to the advent of amphibians and reptiles. Aeons - Aeons is just a fancy, ancient spelling of "eons," vast periods of time. Ion channels - A term used in biology and medicine to refer to the osmotic pressure balance maintained across cell walls by the relative concentrations of various metal ions in aqueous solution, usually sodium and potassium. The opening or closing of transport pathways through the cell walls for certain molecules, mediated by the ion balance, are called "ion channels." Thus, the "magic" of life is permitted to exist because the exquisite balancing of ion concentrations on each side of the membrane either open the channel and allow entry of molecules necessary for life or close the channel to exclude other molecules. Little Lucy of the Afars - Refers to the fossil remnants of the female dubbed "Lucy," found in the region of Africa that was known, in ancient times, as "The Territory of Isis and Afars" (nothing to do with the modern day meaning of that term "Isis") now roughly corresponding to the countries of Somalia and Djibouti. Lucy is believed to be the single known example of the common humanoid ancestor that spawned homo sapiens, Neanderthals, and Cro Magnons. ...And the Geico Caveman. LOL Ionia - Ancient Greece, often credited as the birthplace of modern scientific thought, logic, and learning. So, when Marco sings, "Enter Ionia" it is not saying that some person "enters" the City-State of Ionia. Rather, it is introducing the scene in the Greatest Show where the City-State of Ionia itself "enters" the world stage of history.

Tuomas has the whole record in his mind when he composes, not just a song. There are some videos about the recording process of "Endless forms more beautiful", he basically "hears" all the instruments and vocal parts in his head, like a painter sees a finished picture. Then he makes some basic demo versions to share with the rest of the band and they start rehearsing. If a member of the band suggests a better idea or something doesn't actually sound as he imagined he has no problem about changing the songs, he's the genius behind the music but they work as a band.

As a mathematician with a deep love of music theory: yes it totally makes sense. Tuomas has an astounding understanding of sound and music. I think great composers understand how a performance plays out in the minds of listeners. They're not orchestrating a band or a show for us, those are just the tools they use. They are conducting us.

Great reaction as always Christi! The narration at the end is by Prof Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist, and it's taken from his book "Unweaving The Rainbow". He actually appeared on stage with Nightwish when they performed this at Wembley, London in 2015. It's a pretty deep statement and goes as follows: "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. In front of Tuomas's keyboards is the Groot (Marvel character). And yes, he is a genius. You're not the first and not the last who says that. Already in 2012 after Imaginaerum album release Iron Maiden's song writer and bassist, Steve Harris, said that "Tuomas is a f****ng genius!". And after that Tuomas wrote the album where was this 21 minute masterpiece about the birth of a universe, the birth of life on Earth and a human evolution - the Greatest Show On Earth! Here's the entire lyrics of the song, if you missed those spoken words - well, wisdoms, I would say by professor Richard Hawkins. *I. The Toolmaker * After a billion years The show is still here Not a single one of your fathers died young The handy travelers out of Africa Little Lucy of the Afar Gave birth to fantasy To idolatry To self destructive weaponry Enter the god of gaps Deep within the past Atavistic dread of the hunted Enter Ionia The cradle of thought The architecture of understanding The human lust to feel so exceptional To rule the Earth Hunger for shiny rocks For giant mushroom clouds The will to do just as you'd be done by Enter history The grand finale Enter ratkind [Chorus 2 (x3)] Man, he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day'll cease to be Greet the last light of the library We were here! This was the first time I’ve actually noticed (the audio quality on this reaction must be better or something), but I’m about 90% certain that it’s BOTH Marko and Floor doing the tribal grunting. If you listen carefully, you can actually hear a subtlety higher overtone slightly out of phase with the base tone. I’ve always heard it before as a single voice and couldn’t really tell who was doing it (they both appear to be on or near their mikes in the video) but figured it was Marko since it’s obviously him on the longer lower growls.

There's so many people and that big production because it was their 20 anniversary show. Since you didn't have time to do some research about the song, here's a little bit for you :) The greatest show on Earth refers of course to life itself. The song tells the story of Life at different levels, that's why you see water, fire, animals and people in the background. The main theory is that the first instrumental part represents the great void before the Big Bang (the fireworks!), and then the formation of the planets. Part 2, starting with Floor's operatic high notes, tells the story of Earth and the creation of life, highlighting the beauty of it all. Part 3, which is the one starting with those ethereal notes from Floor and those grunts, is probably the most interesting part of the song, at least in terms of music and composition. That part 3 is called The Toolmaker, referring to the human being. In just a few minutes, the music, the lyrics, and in this case the background imagery too, are telling the story of humanity, from the Neanderthal-like growls of Marco, to the rise of cultures and civilizations, and to how modern man succumbed to greed, power, hate, wars (giant mushroom clouds = atomic bombs), "ratkind". And after that, the chorus brings some hope by talking about the good things of the human being and encouraging us to learn and discover, to "greet the last light of the library". But, even more interestingly, Tuomas uses the instrumental section between the two choruses (mins 14 to 15 approx) to tell the story of music evolution: hidden behind the keyboard melody and the riffs, you can hear short fragments of different types of music throughout History: from tribal instruments to Gregorian to medieval to Bach to Metallica and lastly to electronic, all that in under a minute, and without losing the conducting melody or the sensation of being in the same song. If that's not called true artistry, I don't know what is :D

@@TheVoiceLoveCo You were saying something about Tuomas being a genius composer? I think in a couple hundred years, if humanity still exists and has any semblance of culture, Tuomas might be held in the same respect as the great classical composers. It seems like making music and telling a story through it, manipulating the listener's emotions while introducing his message, often subliminally is second nature to him (scratch that, first nature in fact, the man was born to do this).

Christi, this piece could be considered Tuomas' view of the evolution of the Earth and Humankind's place on it. There are elements of Professor Richard Dawkins and Charles Darwin's musings, both renowned biologists. The 'figure' on the front of Tuomas' keyboard may represent Humankind strapped to the evolutionary process,(just my thoughts). The narrator is indeed Richard Dawkins, and when they performed this at Wembley in 2015,Dawkins read the last passage on stage with the band and took the curtain call with the band. Tuomas is indeed an exceptional composer and I can hardly wait to see what he has in store in 2020 with the new album release. If Floor's excitement is any guide,it will be well worth the wait. May I suggest you react to Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Airies.Just when you think you have heard it all from Floor, she re-interprets one of their early songs in a way that takes it to another level. It's ironic how relatively unknown Floor Jansen was in the Netherlands before she participated on Beste Zangers on television here. How Nightwish has eluded me for all these years is a complete mystery, but I'm ecstatic that I discovered them. I've been binge watching their concerts the last couple of months now in a slightly obsessive manner -- as if there is any other way. They all are insanely talented musicians and there aren't enough superlatives for Floor's singing capabilities and stage presence to me Marko Hietala was the most fun discovery. From his solo performances to the backing vocals and duets -- their voices go so well together -- this year' rendition of Ave Maria at Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) is one of the most awesome versions I've ever heard/see. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ut6ufu2CPNg.html

@Ad Lockhorst , in general ...metal isn~t that accepted in our little country...... mainstream is rap, hip hop, R&B , dance music...... hard rock, metal, or songs longer than 4 minutes seem to be unbearable for the radio...... good to have you tube and no narrow mind........ there`s enough good music to explore outside radio stations in the Netherlands.

Hello Christi, first of all welcome to the complete setup of Nightwish - as far as I know this was the first piece of music of Nightwish in the complete line-up to which you made a reaction. The missing member is Troy Donockley, the multi-instrumentalist. He plays pretty much every kind of flute, the Uilleann Pipes, guitars and lots of other instruments. That's why I wasn't surprised that you didn't really realize that it wasn't a duet of Marko and Floor but mostly a trio, because Troy was also involved. The camera work was a bit confusing here, too, because Troy didn't get any attention at all - what a pity. Nightwish is an extraordinary group in this line-up, which not only stands out due to its extraordinary musical mastery, but has also grown together in friendship. You can see this very well at the gigs - there is always a smile in the eyes and also little attentions between the participants, a nudge here or a high five - just a "horny band" and it is always fun to watch and listen to them at "work". Their complete concerts are emotional rollercoasters and I wish I could have a look at one of them - let's see, on the next tour... Please note the following dates - in February probably the new video and in April probably the new CD -- these are the rumors that are currently circulating. Officially the mastering was finished yesterday - so it's going forward

just to point out, although you probably already know... the "we were here" with the crowd chanting together, is not about being on that show... but about humanity being a part of the greatest show on Earth and leaving it's mark on the universe, even if we come to someday disappear. "Man, he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day'll cease to be Greet the last light of the library We were here! We were here! We were here! We were here! "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born The potential people who could have been here in my place But who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA So massively exceeds the set of actual people In the teeth of those stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds How dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state From which the vast majority have never stirred?" There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers Having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one And that whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity From so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been And are being, evolved"

To give a basic rundown of what the song is about, it is based on the essay "Endless Forms Most Beautiful," by Richard Dawkins. The message is two-fold. First, at its most basic, it is the story of the birth and life and evolution of the universe and life on earth. The beginning represents the big bang (the fireworks, etc.). Then the formation of the seas and the most basic life forms (the Divonian Sea, which was the primordial sea before land came about). The part where Marco is grunting in a tribal fashion is basically the volcanic age, and the introduction of land animals, including humans. That gives way to modern humanity, and how we've impacted the earth. The second point of the song, which is incapsulated by the repeated words "We Were Here," and the narration by Dr. Dawkins at the end, is to not regret the shortness of our lives, but to revel in the very fact that we got the chance to live at all. As the narration states (and I may be paraphrasing this a bit): "We will all die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people will never die, because they will never be born. The number of potential people who could be standing here in my place outnumber the sands of Sahara. Surely such unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton … the number of potential people allowed by our DNA far exceeds the number of actual people. We lucky few who won the lottery of life, how dare we complain about our inevitable return to that prior state from which most never stir!" So the overarching message is, "Love and appreciate every second of your life, because you are one of the lucky few for whom all the necessary elements came together to create the miracle of life in the first place, and revel in the fact that you were here to make an impact!" That's the story of the song.

This was the final song of a 2 hour concert. We like to call Floor's twrirly thing a "Windmill". Especially since it gives it a Dutch connection. Great reaction video Christy. Tuomas is a genius! This it's definitely their greatest masterpiece so far. The songs it's about life and evolution from a biological point of view, "The Greatest Show On Earth" its Life. And actually the whole album ("Endless Forms Most Beautiful") from which this song is, it's mostly about this ideas. And the person you hear reciting at the end it's Richard Dawkins, so, I quote this to explain a little: "The song title is taken from a 2009 book by evolutionary biologist and atheist writer Richard Dawkins, concerning the evidence for biological evolution. Dawkins also contributes towards the album. Holopainen (Tuomas) explained to HMV in March 2015: "I wrote him a letter a bit more than a year ago and explained the ideas we had for this album, mainly to do with evolution. Since one of the tracks would be named directly after one of his books, it felt like a perfect match to try to get him do some reciting on the album. He sent me an email a few weeks later accepting the invitation." " "Later in 2014 we then recorded his parts at Hats Off Studios, Oxford. This is a huge honor for us, since Dawkins is one of our biggest heroes and his writings have been huge inspiration for the album." By the way, I Love your videos!

The "twirly-twirly thigy" is called a Windmill moevment, or just simply windmill. And yes, Tuomas is really like a mathematician, carefully planning things out all throughout scores. Best example is The Poet and the Pendulum, where a spoken line is "now I only have 3 minutes and counting", which is precisely 3 minutes away from the final strike of the pendulum in that section.

15:50 Nope, that prehistoric grunting was being performed by Floor. I can't remember which song it is, but Floor actually does deep growl vocals *underneath* Marco while he's singing. Takes a bit to spot it 'cause it's so unexpected!

Oh, and all of them wear ear pieces for the tic track. Tuomas always has the back track by the London Philharmonic to deal with, and to keep time they all need to hear it at least. Especially Kai and before him Jukka. The drummer really needs to be on their game when a band needs to do that, so if your piece falls out or stops working you got him to track to. I know Marko has joked about his ears just getting security pulling crowd surfers off the edge. They are certainly well fit for the head banging and Floor's "Windmills" I think someone mentioned it for that reaction, but Tuomas has Floor's vocals in Poet removed from his feed because of the emotions she generates. He's gotten better, but the Mother And Father portion, especially, was too much for him.

Finally been waiting for this song. This concert is a treasure trove of amazing songs. Last ride of the day is amazing and one of my favorites, The greatest show on earth aside.

I saw this posted the other day by someone. Floor and her husband, Sabaton drummer Hannes van Dahl have a young daughter Freja. Freja's first day at day care: Teacher: " Freja what does your Mommy do?" Freja; "She is a Meral Goddess"

You nailed it with your comment about Tuomas. He is one of the greatest composers in the world now. I buy all the records they make and i don't have to wonder if its good or not. There is not many people in the world like Tuomas. it's like a massage to your brain every time you here them and this song is just what name says, not less not more just the greatest show on earth. It's hard to listen anything else after this song. It's kind of long by the minute but when you start to here you notice soon that hey...why it already stopped. i could listen this till i am dead lke a stone. How the hell i can wait the next record comind 10.04. Mark the day my fellow NW fans. I Think we can soon wait something new songs from the new record so stay alert my friends and keep on rockin'.

What a great reaction once again Christi. Hope to see many more Nightwish reactions from you. I'm still waiting for that "Phantom of the opera" (End of an Era), and you should really listen to "The Islander" (Tampere 2015) also. Both songs showcases Marko's talent also.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but right after you said you couldn't tell which one was Floor and which one was Marko, a couple twins showed up in the concert. That's definitely a good timming for this comment! :D

Unlike the outrageous ticket prices being charged for concerts these days, whatever the cost of a ticket is to their show, you’ll truly get every dollar’s worth. Combine the music with the theatrics, it is definitely worth every penny. Ive paid $150 for a few shows over the years that were crap musically with very vanilla theatrics. A Nightwish show is something to remember for a lifetime.

I paid £32 for my ticket to Wembley 2016... around £50 for the upcoming one in Wembley this year. Back in the day, I'd paid €28 for their End of an Era show in my home city. Probably the best value for money live shows by a large margin.

Watched it again and since you like Marco singing...The song "While your lips are still red" at Wembley 2015. Here he sings and Floor does backing later in the song.
