Thank you for one of, if not the best reaction videos to my husband’s rendition of Spain. Try to react to his compositions like Take Me Out of the Dark, Break Me, Until Then. He has almost died many times because he is a Type 1 diabetic for 41 years, who has had hepatitis, tuberculosis, a cardia double bypass in 2018 and kidney cancer two weeks later with another surgery 5 1/2 weeks later. So he is a very special man. Thank you for such a beautiful reaction video. god bless you !!!!

He is such a talented, kind and honest human being. I have this so many times and I can’t seem to get enough. So sad he had to go thru so much but glad he got thru them. God is definitely watching over him. Such a good human being and we all should be thankful to Gary for restoring our faith in humanity, regardless of what religion you follow. I am a Muslim and I appreciate gods wonderful gifts to all mankind. Gary keep doing the good work and Angeli keep giving him the support & Love he richly deserves.

Sorry, She's wrong. Al Jarreau came much much later and that's why he is never mentioned in any of the credits. "Spain" was composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939 with a long history of instrumental adaptations until keyboard genius Chick Corea wrote the jazz fusion lyrics in 1971 and released the album "Light As A Feather" with Corea (Rhodes electric piano), Flora Purim (vocals and percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto Moreira (drums), and Joe Farrell (flute), and made it a jazz standard by 1973. "Spain" was recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists, including a flamenco version by Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin in the 1980s, and a progressive bluegrass version by Bela Fleck in 1979. Corea also performed it as a duo with Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara. Corea thereafter corroborated with Artie Marten and Al Jarreau to rewrite the song, and Jarreau made this popular during his world tour in an album titled "I Can Recall" in 1980. The Light as a Feather version of Spain received two Grammy nominations, for Best Instrumental Arrangement and for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Group. In 2001, Corea was awarded the Best Instrumental Arrangement Grammy for "Spain for Sextet and Orchestra". In my humble opinion, Gary V's cover is far more challenging than that of Al Jarreau because he scatted all the instrumental parts while Jarreau did not.

A lot of the voice coaches who reviewed this performance didn't seem to be aware that this piece is a jazz standard or are familiar with Corea & the late Al Jarreau. I liked that you point out certain qualities of Gary's performance & then play the corresponding video clip to illustrate. And very nice to see someone who can really understand & appreciate jazz. You're only the 2nd reactor I've come across who really understood this particular genre & this song.

It's stars that I comment but I really need to excited how much I appreciated your video. Most reactors really haven't know the background on this song, so happy you did. I can't seem to get a link embedded here but I stumbled onto a YT video of a live performance of Gary doing Spain with Katrina Velarde in NYC this past April. I think you'd really enjoy it (even if you don't make it a reaction). It blew me away...two of my favorite artists together! I love your reaction and breakdown of Gary V’s rendition of one of my most favorite songs - new sub here! Al Jarreau was one of Gary’s influences and it’s very obvious in his style of singing, especially in his earlier performances in the 80s. Jazz and R&B are more of his hobbies though, as he’s more known for pop and gospel songs locally. You’ve just seen him jamming and having fun with the music and he’s such a joy to watch. Imagine at his concerts where people can’t stay seated. Literally. You’ll be standing up and dancing with him the whole two hours then be ready to go out and dance some more!

Gary is half Puerto Rican and half-Filipino. He also a Type 1 diabetic, and has been known to be near collapse during some of his live performances. That said he is a total performer, Mr Pure Energy as he is known in the Philippines.

This guy's one song in a whole performance in one! Wowweee!! To be fair, watching your face mirroring, reflecting, and following along, was just as delightful. And jazz isn't even my favorite genre to listen to ... And ... yet this one! Wow! Also, yes ... there was something about how he was 'full in' that was very moving. Fantastic. Your reaction video was excellent. I teared up also when I heard him make Spain his own while you could tell Al Jarreau was an inspiration for him. Loved your explanation with clips at the end. He is exceptional and his wife's comments here about all the health problems he has said just make him all the more inspiring.

Excellent reaction :) Thank you for appreciating the musicality of Gary V and the nuances of this particular performance. You were very astute in your reference to the late Al Jarreau and, indeed, he was a big influence on Gary from the earliest years of his career. If memory serves me correctly, he performed "Spain" on his first (or at least one of his first) TV appearance in the Philippines back in 1983 or 1984. I have watched him perform "Spain" a good number of times sinve then and let me tell you, no two performances of this song were ever the same! If you're interested, you may find some of these performances on RU-vid. Anyhow, thank you for featuring Gary V and a host of other Filipino musicians/artists on your channel!

FYI: Al Jarreau came much much later and that's why he is never mentioned in any of the credits. "Spain" was composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939 with a long history of instrumental adaptations until keyboard genius Chick Corea wrote the jazz fusion lyrics in 1971 and released the album "Light As A Feather" with Corea (Rhodes electric piano), Flora Purim (vocals and percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto Moreira (drums), and Joe Farrell (flute), and made it a jazz standard by 1973. "Spain" was recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists, including a flamenco version by Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin in the 1980s, and a progressive bluegrass version by Bela Fleck in 1979. Corea also performed it as a duo with Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara. Corea thereafter corroborated with Artie Marten and Al Jarreau to rewrite the song, and Jarreau made this popular during his world tour in an album titled "I Can Recall" in 1980. The Light as a Feather version of Spain received two Grammy nominations, for Best Instrumental Arrangement and for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Group. In 2001, Corea was awarded the Best Instrumental Arrangement Grammy for "Spain for Sextet and Orchestra". In my humble opinion, Gary V's cover is far more challenging than that of Al Jarreau because he scatted all the instrumental parts while Jarreau did not.

Thanks for reacting to this! Love me some Chick Correa and Al Jarreau (especially his rendition of Take 5). I think Gary has the best vocal cover of this song. If you'll ever get the time to get back to Nightwish, The greatest show on earth is also amazing!
